as kids are heading back to class, many systems are finding they don't have enough people to drive their buses. >> the economy is better. so people are going back to jobs that they had done previously, or they find the need to stay at home. >> reporter: in denver this year where they're still looking for at least 40 more school bus drivers, they're offering bonuses and pay raises and recruiting stay at home parents, hoping they can fill the gap, telling them they can bring any preschool aged children along for the ride. >> as long as they can walk up on the bus, we can get them into a car seat and make sure that they're safe. >> reporter: according to a recent survey, 22% of bus contractors are calling the shortage severe, and 5% say they're desperate to find drivers. >> we're seeing some school districts having to cut routes or consolidate them, having fewer stops. >> reporter: one of the problems

group on one side that was bad, and you had another group on the other side that was also very violent, and nobody wants to say that. >> reporter: and what about that initial group that took to the streets on friday night? the president defended some of them too. >> i've condemned neo-nazis. i've condemned many different groups. but not all of those people were neo-nazis, believe me. not all of those people were white supremacists by any stretch. those people were also there because they wanted to protest the taking down of a statue, robert e. lee. >> reporter: so i asked is he putting the counter protesters in the same place. are you putting them in the same moral plane? >> i'm not putting anybody on a moral plane. what i'm saying is this. you had one group on one side and another and they came at each other and it was horrible and a horrible thing to watch. but there is another side.

there was a group on this side. you can call them the left. you've just called them the left, that came violently attacking the other group. so you can say what you want, but that's the way it is. i think there's blame on both sides. you look at, you look at both sides. i think there's blame on both sides, and i have no doubt about it, and you don't have any doubt about it either. and, and if you reported it accurately, you would say it. >> reporter: the president standing firm by his response and his leadership. >> excuse me, you had some very bad people in that group. but you also had people that were very fine people being on both sides. >> reporter: and the reaction to the president's remarks is pouring in. the speaker of the house usually one of the president's top defenders, tweeting, we must be clear, white supremacy is repulsive. this bigotry is counter to all this country stands for. there can be no moral ambiguity.

mary bruce, abc news, new york. >> you can kind of hear some of the loud protesters that were gathered outside fifth avenue and trump tower. gave you a little color on how this played out. reporters were told moments before the president came down that he's just going to make a speech. then all the other cabinet members that were there, they were going to take questions. then the president goes, let me bring my budget director up here and goes any questions about infrastructure? nobody's going to ask about infrastructure after the week we've had. >> the report said he signed off on a plan not to take questions after the conference. this seemed like an off the cuff thing. and has generated quite a bit of reaction. >> some of the reports this morning, borrowing a line from the rolling stones going with symphony for the devils. "the new york post" was, they weren't all nazis. so a little bit more subdued there. but reaction coming from all

around, including the celebrity world or the sports world. lebron james attacking president trump in an emotional speech. >> james called him the so-called president while calling for unity after the deadly charlottesville violence. >> the only way for us to be able to get better as a society and us to get better as people is love. and that's the only way we're going to be able to conquer something at the end of the day. 25 minutes. >> reporter: president trump squares off with reporters inside trump tower. >> excuse me, excuse me. >> reporter: defending his decision to wait 4hours after the hate-fueled violence in charlottesville before denouncing the white supremacists involved by name. >> i wanted to make sure, unlike most politicians, that what i said was correct. not make a quick statement, and it's a very, very important process to me. and it's a very important statement. as i said on, remember the saturday, we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence. it has no place in america. and then went on from there. >> reporter: but his daughter, ivanka trump and vice president pence all condemned the rally's racism before he did, even calling out the kkk and neo-nazis. now after white supremacists marched in the street, the president is back to square one, blaming all sides.

white supremacists, by any stretch. those people were also there because they wanted to protest the taking down of a statue, robert e. lee. >> reporter: on capitol hill, chris murphy tweets he almost threw up reading the president's comment and paul ryan was quick to respond. we must be clear, white supremacy is repulsive. this bigotry is counter to all this country stands for. there can be no moral ambiguity. but from david duke, praise. he thanks the president on twitter for his honesty and courage. and when asked about heather heyer, the woman that was killed, he says he has not reached out to her family yet but will soon. diane and kendis? >> our thanks there. and the president also addresses the charlottesville statue of confederate general robert e. lee. >> the purpose of the rally was to protest the removal of that statue. city lawmakers voted to take it

down citing the confederacy's fight to keep slavery, but the president voiced concerns, asking if some founding fathers could be next. >> george washington was a slave owner. was george washington a slave owner? so will george washington now lose his status? are we going to take down -- excuse me. are we going to take down, are we going to take down statues to george, how about thomas jefferson? what do you think of thomas jefferson? you like'em? he was a major slave owner. are we going to take down his statue. you know, it's fine. you're changing culture, you're changing history. >> a number of places have accelerated taking down confederate statues, meanwhile, the woman accused of bringing down a confederate statue in durham, north carolina has been arrested. investigators say the 22-year-old admitted she tied a rope to the statue. and police arrested a man

carrying a confederate flag and rifle in front of the controversial robert e. lee monument. he says he was supporting the greatest american that ever lived. and two women injured in the charlottesville car attack are suing the organizers of the unite the right rally. they are seeking $3 million in damages. the suit also names the alleged driver of the vehicle and about two dozen alt-right leaders and organizations. the washingtons were in another vehicle and say they were not taking part in any protests. the justice department is demanding an internet hosting company information on anyone who visited the anti-trump web site. it was used to organize protests during the inauguration. the hosting site is fighting it saying it is unconstitutional. a former south carolina state trooper was in court today for shooting a driver for reaching for his license.

the victim was asking for the maximum. it was the moment the officer addressed the victim that stunned the courtroom. steve osunsami explains. >> reporter: the former patrolman. seen in this video, gunning down a black driver before he even has a chance to show him his license is apologizing. >> get on the ground! get on the ground! >> reporter: a south carolina judge sentenced 34-year-old shawn gruber to 12 years in prison for the shooting, but he's expected to serve three with good behavior. he faced the man he could have killed. >> you did nothing wrong and i screwed up. plain and simple. i made the biggest mistake of my life. >> reporter: but back in 2014, when he's seen here arresting lavar jones for a seat belt violation after seriously wounding him, he was blaming the victim. >> why did you shoot me? >> you dove head first back into your car. >> reporter: he said he wanted

to say he's sorry in person for the last three years, but the courts required him to keep away from his victim. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. a third man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a missouri police officer, jacob johnson is accused of hindering the prosecution of a felony. gary michael was shot during a traffic stop on august 6. after a two-day manhunt, ian mccarthy was arrested. he was charged with murder. costco owes tiffany more than $19 million. costco was found to have been selling diamond engagement rings called "tiffany." but tiffany says they had nothing to do with them. costco says it described the name of setting and it will appeal. bill gates is donating another 5% of his salary to charity. newly disclosed records show he gave more than $4.5 billion to

watch as bystanders come to the rescue of a kayaker in over his head in alaska. he was participating in the whitewater festival without adequate equipment. the current was too strong to pull him up. an experienced kayaker jumped in to grab the man and brought him

over to the river bank where he was resuscitated. police and bystanders in new york central park rushed to the rescue of a mother and her three children who were trapped under a fallen tree. the large elm tree fell with such force its roots were ripped out of the ground. witnesses say it happened so quickly, no one had time to react. >> me and my wife, we were walking, and like in a couple seconds, we heard a little, tiny crick, like an of, and then the tree just went down. we turned around, about several of us ran toward the tree. and a bunch of us grabbed the branch and like a big branch, we pulled it back. and there was two mothers and a double baby carriage and the two babies got out okay. but the one mother was laid out and unconscious. >> talk about your maternal instincts, the 39-year-old, ann goldman managed to shield her three children, including her one month old.

they suffered only scratches and bruises. she's in critical condition with a broken neck. her 2-year-old son had a fractured skull and the one month old just got away with scratches. officials could not explain what caused the tree to suddenly fall. and the rescue came on the same day another tree fell on a catholic celebration in madeira. the towering oak reportedly more than 200 years old came crashing down and killing at least 13 people and injuring nearly 50 others. authorities are investigating what triggered that tree collapse. and a father returned home to find his family unconscious. >> police rushed to the scene only to fall victim themselves. as several were rushed to the hospital. here's mara schiavocampo. >> reporter: officials say they

were discovered moments before it was too late. >> five people unconscious. possible carbon monoxide poisoning. >> reporter: officials telling abc news a father came home to find his wife, two young children and two adult stepchildren in distress. he rushed in to pull them out, too good samaritans joining the rescue. three police officers quickly following suit. but the toxic gas so strong it made the rescuers sick too. >> that level was higher than any norm, i would say normal carbon monoxide incident you would have. >> reporter: firefighters breathing through gas masks detecting co levels 45 times what it usually takes to set off a carbon monoxide detector. two of those remain hospitalized in fair condition. it's unclear whether there were working carbon monoxide detecters inside the home.

commandant robert neller tweeted no place for racial hatred or extremism in the u.s. marine corps. in the meantime, the controversial film maker, michael moore invited audience members of his broadway show to protest outside trump tower overnight. he loaded them onto two double-decker buss after the show and they were joined by mark ruffalo. moore and ruffalo led a candle light vigil for heather heyer killed in the violence over the weekend. and one person not upset is with the president's news conference is former kkk leader david duke. >> duke's support comes amid rising tensions over images and monuments to the confederacy. here's eva pilgrim. >> reporter: the president offering at least some support to the protesters who descended on charlottesville. >> you had a lot of people in that group who were there to innocently protest and legally protest.

i don't know if you know. they had a permit. the other group didn't have a permit. so i only tell you this. there are two sides to a story. i thought what took place was a horrible moment for our country. a horrible moment. >> reporter: the former head of the kkk, david duke, over the weekend tweeting a warning to the president. i would recommend you take a good look in the mirror and remember it was white americans to put you in the presidency, not radical leftists. a new tweet from duke, grateful to the president for his words. thank you, president trump for your honesty and courage to tell the truth about charlottesville and condemn the leftist terrorists in blm, anti-fa. here in charlottesville, one white nationalist spoke out. >> he's opened up a door. his movement has opened up a door. but it's up to us to take the initiative. >> reporter: and the fight over confederate statues is now a

flash point. in durham, north carolina crowds tearing down a statue honoring confederate soldiers. >> let me be clear, no one is getting away with what happened. we are pursuing felony charges. >> reporter: there are 700 monuments like this throughout the u.s. pressure is building for many cities to move them or take them down. that fight energizing white nationalists who want to stop them. already, planning events in the coming weeks. the southern poverty law center reports in the last three years, more than 125 new hate groups have formed. >> they're just kind of now becoming more to light and coming out from the cracks, because of the new election, the new administration. >> reporter: cities and schools taking a hard look, balancing public safety and the right to free speech. texas a&m already canceling a planned white nationalist rally that was supposed to happen in september. eva pilgrim, abc news, charlottesville, virginia. >> nearly 70 of those monuments have come down since the

shootings that took place in charleston, some years ago, in south carolina. now president trump is noncommittal when it comes to steve bannon. many high-profile republicans were calling for bannon's ouster. >> now some of the closest advisers are pushing for bannon to go. on tuesday, the president defended bannon but made no promises about his future. >> i like him. he is a good man. he is not a racist, i can tell you that. he's a good person. he actually gets a very unfair press in that regard. but we'll see what happens with mr. bannon, but he's a good person, and i think the press treats him very unfairly. >> the president down-played bannon's role in his campaign saying he was a latecomer. in the meantime, bannon had reportedly been telling people he thought his job was safe. and students were set to return to school when they decided to honor their

community in charlottesville. ♪ lean on me when you're not strong ♪ ♪ and i'll be your friend >> they were singing the bill withers classic "lean on me." we'll move on right now. your health insurance premium could sky rocket if president trump makes good on a threat against the affordable care act for the year. the president has threatened to stop payments to insurers. but the non-partisan congressional budget office says that would rise premiums for a popular type of individual health plan as much as 20%. many people would be lett with no insurance objections at all. so far the trump administration has continued to make those payments. south carolina lindsey graham is pushing for a block grant method of funding health care. it would give money to each state and let the governors decide how to use it, depending on what would work best in their state. his plan is gaining support he says.

>> i hope by the end of the month to have at least 25 governors on board for the block grant approach. president trump, i talked to him a few days ago. he really likes this idea. >> the bill is directed by the group which hopes to complete a formula by next week to determine how much each state gets. overseas, the death toll is rising from severe weather in south asia and west africa. at least 245 people have been killed in flooding and mudslides, triggered by a monsoon across part of india, southern nepal and bangladesh. millions of others have been displaced. meanwhile, at least 300 people have been killed in devastating mudslides in sierra leone. at least 700 others are missing. thousands have lost their homes. and here in the u.s., heavy rain has triggered flash flooding across parts of arkansas. more than four inches of rain

well, this group in milwaukee who tried to car jack a 50-year-old woman didn't get what they came for. grandma fought them off. chasing them away. surveillance video showing the woman fighting off her attackers and chasing them away. all they managed to get were a few personal items but not her car. >> don't mess with grandma. and rudy giuliani is recovering in the hospital after a fall at his home in long island. the 73-year-old giuliani told "the post" he underwent surgery for a knee tendon problem. his wife judith says he is already back at work from his hospital bed. giuliani has been advising the trump administration on cybersecurity.

as kids are heading back to class, many systems are finding they don't have enough people to drive their buses. >> the economy is better. so people are going back to jobs that they had done previously, or they find the need to stay at home. >> reporter: in denver this year where they're still looking for at least 40 more school bus drivers, they're offering bonuses and pay raises and recruiting stay at home parents, hoping they can fill the gap, telling them they can bring any preschool aged children along for the ride. >> we can get them into a car seat and make sure they're safe. >> reporter: 22% of bus contractors say the shortage is severe, and 5% say they're desperate to find drivers. >> we're seeing some school districts having to cut school bus routes or consolidate them.
