past arye,he t astounding. amy hollyfield live for us in hayward. good morning, amy. >> reporter: natasha, we are coming up on 100 highway shootings in the bay area. this was the 92nd in a year and a half. the second one this week. chp officers tell us they're doing all they can to try to stop this dangerous trend that also creates a huge inconvenience for drivers. as you can see in this video, they once again had to shut down a section of the freeway as they gatheredevidence. this was northbound 880 in hayward last night, just south of highway 92. they did say they found some shell casings on the freeway during their investigationwork but it created a backup. this was at 10:00 last night. some drivers near the shooting called in and described what was happening. >> the initial calls had been reported that onlookers observed a person hanging out a car window shooting at another

vehicle. >> reporter: no one was shot, but the passenger in the car that was being shot at was hit with glass. investigators say the victims are in their teens. there was a driver and a passenger in that car. they don't have information on the shooter or the motive. no arrests have been made. there was a sginot in san leandro on monday. officers say it's too early to know if these two are connected. all lanes of 880 have reopened so it shouldn't be an impact on the morning commute. live in hayward, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> hi, everyone. this morning here at the live desk, just getting new images of confederate statues taken down overnight. look closely. some folks clapping as a th cy cou il decided to mes remove it monday. the push to take down confederate items has increased following the deadly rally in

sta charlot charlottesvil charlottesville. a confederate monument in birmingham was covered up niov bans removing the monuments, but this statue was paid for by private dollars and maintained on private dollars so they're exploring options to fully remove it. >> this morning, president trump slammed by republicans and democrats for his response to the violence in charlottesville. >> lawmakers up celt after the president doubled down on claims both sides were responsible for the violence. >> you had people, i'm not talking about the nazis and white nationalists, but you had other people other than neonazis and white nationalists. and the press has treated them absolutely unfairly. in the other group, also, you had fine people, but you also had troublemakers and you see them come with the black outfits and with the helmets and with

the baseball bats. you got a lot of bad people in the other group too. rlted in three in charlott deaths and numerousrire sident criticism from the regional director of the anti-defamation league in san francisco and politicians. san diego's republican mayor spoke at an distanced himself president trump and the violence that erupted in charlottesville. >> the fault of it was the white supremacists, the racists that were there inciting and doing the wrong thing. you have to be very clear about that. >> this is racism, bigotry. it has no place in america. that's not a very fine person who is shouting and espousing that type of hatred. >> the anti-defamation league is asking the department of justice to investigate saturday's uprise as an act of terrorism.

>> a effort at b.a.r.t. may leave hundreds of riders stranded. they're seriously considering switching its current 4:00 a.m. start time on week days to an hour later, 5:00 a.m. the agency needs more time overnight to renovate the system. consultants brought in by b.a.r.t. say there's no other way to perform the work without moving the start time. the change could last a decade abc7 news was the only news agency invited to go along on a crackdown on gate avoiders. they intercepted suspected fare evaders in the act. they stepped up the effort to crack down onsts the system up million a year. >> the free ride is over. we're working towards a culture change with a three-pronged attack that includes law enforcement, hardening the stations and also g riheatdata.

minutes a fully engulfed home. >> firefighters initially found two victims, a man and child. a second child was reported missing. they found the third young victim hours later. >> i broke down and cried because it was a sad homant. >> fire officials say the victims are a grandfather and grandchild. the other child's relationship to the family hasn't been determined. >> even though we didn't communicate on the same language,words, we just go wtho aloitng asut neighbors. and i'm just heartbroken over it. they were very good people. >> the captain says mobile homes are highly flammable. >> they burn very quickly, and you can get overcome by smoke or fire almost instantaneously. >> it's not yet know if the mobile home had working smoke detectors. >> it's 5:08. this morning, oakland has its first ever police commission that includes five men and two women. it's a multicultural group of people. many have experiences with community and city programs. the criminal justice system and

the law. in fact, one man has even been arrested four times by oakland police. three cases were never charged. the fourth was dismissed. the commission will oversee the departments and procedures and have the authority to fire the police chief. oakland voters approved the creation of this board following a sex scandal that has rocked the city's police department. >> 5:09 now. wells fargo welcoming its first chair woman in history. elizabeth duke will help oversee the san francisco based bank as it struggles with several controversies. the 65-year-old will be the first woman to hold that position at a major wall street bank. she will start her new job on january 1st. you know my biggest fear of doing the back to school forecasts? i have a tendency to type too fast and misspell these. i would hate to do that on one of these. san leandro unified school district, 59 degrees and cloudy.

82. mostly sunny and 78 in tahoe. safe travels around the state today. let's see if we have travel issues around the metro. what's going on this morning? >> not really. it's off to a very quiet start this morning. here's akoo l maps. one slow spot, as you would expect, out of tracy. westbound 205 to 580. we're definitely stop and go. we have reports of a disabled vehicle, westbound 580, about two miles east of north flynn just as you get to t ro.ad altamont pass area, sounds like that's blocking the right center lane. no emergency crews there yet and we don't have a lot of information. that's going to be slower than normal. stop and go for nine miles. most of that are typical delays but probably a little slower than average. 101 and 880 looking good. light volumes on both sides. even the inbound traffic coming toward us. we're off to a fairly quiet start and we'll loo drive times at at5:20. >> thanks. >> the start of classes gets off to a painful start for dozens of students in southern california. what caused thousands of bees to

high school students in socalhigh tailed it out of their class room when a swarm of bees starting attacking them. it happened at palmdale high school. look at the chaos after the bees

started stinging them yesterday. 40 students had to be taken to the hospital. none seriously hurt. firefighters say a beehive formed in a classroom over the summer and that a student threw an apple at it on the first day of school. not a good idea. a beekeeper was called in to take care of that hive. >> wow. former new york mayor rudy giuliani is recovering after being rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery over the weekend. he says he fell while on vacation on long island. giuliani tells the new york post his knee gave way when he was walking on sunds he has suffered fromay catcher's knee r years as a result of being a catcher from a very young age. it would deteriorate. he says he's now already up and limping around. fans of the king of rock 'n' roll, elvis presley, are marking the 40th anniversary of the singer's death. the vigil at graceland estate in memphis started last night and went until sunrise. this year, fans are facing a big change. the estate is charging every

coverage. >> it is happening in the morning, and it this week has been any indication, staying in the city to see it might be a problem. >> i agree, and at the coast. there are indications by our medium range models that aren't as fine resolution as the short-term, which will start to take over as we get closer to the eclipse, but right now, they're showing there could be a push of dry air, allowing the bay and inland neighborhoods to see the entire eclipse and possibly areas at the coast. that's the best case scenario. we'll fine tune as we get closer. let's talk about a timeframe. 9:01, it starts. it maxes out at 75% at 10:15, and by 11:37, it's over. today, a look at walnut creek, looking southbound. doesn't look as hazy or misty as earlier this .ekweoing to emerg clouds at noon. except for the coast where we have pockets of sunshine. cloudy tonight, some patchy fog forms in the north bay and along the coast. our warmest days are still

in the last year and a half. the second one this week. the chp tells us it is a high priority for their offices to put a stop to these shootings. here's a look at a familiar image that comes now associated with the shootings. a highway backup as the chp gathers evidence and shuts down lanes on the freeway. this was northbound 880 in hayward just south of highway 92. this was around 10:00 last night. the call came in that someone utsde the car window and shooting at another car. no one was shot. the passenger was hit with some glass but is okay. we asked if this shooting is possibly related to the one that happened monday on 880 in san leandro. >> it's too early in the investigation to makeny a assumption that these shootings are connected in any way, shape, or form. at this ponlt, we're turning this over to our investigative services unit. >> there were two people inside

that c star at. investigators say they were young teenagers who were in that car. no arrests havth been haven't s think the possible motive could have been in the shooting. all lanes of the freeway have been reopened so your morning commute will not be impacted. live in hayward, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. police are searching for a gunman in alameda after a person was shot around 8:30 last night at webster and east eagle avenue. the shooting victim was found inside an apartment. no word on arrests. uc berkeley policere attacked a woman, hitting her in the head with a big piece of wood. this happened on monday just before 8:00 p.m. in the eucalyptus grove near the west cres nlt. the victim was arguing with the suspect. she got knocked out and taken to the hospital. police looked around, they couldn't find the man who was last seen walking near oxford street. >> now on to the explosive news conference by president trump at trump tower.

reigniting the controversy to his first response to the violence in charlottesville. during the press conference yesterday, president trump defended his decision to wait two days to conmn supremacists in charlottesville by name. he also defended some protesters. >> what about the alt-left that came charging at the, as you say, alt-right? do they have any semblance of guilt? >> reaction to the president's latest comments was swift. republican speaker of the house paul ryan saying, quote, we must be clear. white supremacy is repulsive. this bigotry isis country stand. there can by no moral ambiguity. six members have pulled out of the president's manufacturing council. >> president trump's press conference was a subject of jimmy kimmel's entire monologue last night. kimmel proposed an idea to make america great again. ea of president, we make donald trump king. okay.

city in berkeley. in protests shut down his planned appearance. >> an oakland couple fighting deportation to mexico is ordered to leave the u.s. today. they were supposed to leave yesterday, but they filed a request to stay their deportation. that request was denied last night. the couple has tried for 15 years to gain citizenship. both are planning to leave the country tonight with their 12-year-old son. they're leaving their three older daughters here. >> sang you to help find a missing 80-year-old woman with alzheimer's. peggy chambers walked away from her apartment last night around 8:00. she was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt and jeans. ifio see her, call the police department. >> muni has approved a $21 billion plan that could change your commute over the next two decades. it calls for a new 19th avenue subway, an extension of the tee third line to fisherman's wharf, and replacing aging buses and

welcome back. new at this hour, we have learned that sea world san diego has euthanized its nearly 42-year-old killer whale. i want to show you here a tweet from the park. it said the tough decision comes after the whale's health and appetite had significantly declined over the past few days. the whale, tough name, was one of the matriarchs of their orca family, birthing four other whales. the park sent out this tweet overnight sayinghe b trey'ee th whale. she passed surrounded by those who loved her. as you may the sea world owkn, organization has often been criticized for its treatment of whales i captivity. >> sad nenws. thank you. happening today, work beginning in boston on a park
