another three-way shooting in the east bay. this time on interstate 880 north of monday's shooting. according to chp, it's the 100th freeway shooting in the east bay since late 2015. abc 7 reporter amy holyfield has the details. >> reporter: last night's shooting in hayward was the 100th freeway shooting in the bay area since november of 2015. >> it's unfortunate it appears like now it's common place it happens at any given time any night out here. >> no one was shot at 10:00 last night when a white car pulled up to another car, a passenger leaned out and started shooting. >> for the amount of shots that were fired, we're quite lucky this could have been much more serious. >> how many shot? >> several shots. >> reporter: the chp says it is doing everything in its power, funding has been set avoid to

fields, jr. the man accused of killing heather heyer when he drove into those protesters. including notes, fields mother samantha bloom called authorities on multiple occasions. in october of 2011, bloom called 911 to say her son was quote being threatening toward her. a month later, a caller asked police to come to her home, saying she wanted her son assessed at a hospital after he spat in her face. he allegedly stood behind his mother with a 12-inch knife the night before. a san francisco electrician is out of a job today, after it was learned he was scheduled to speak at the white nationalist rally in charlottesville. they tell abc 7 news, he no longer works there. the company did not specify if he quit or was dismissed. his union releasd a statement today saying it does not share the views and opinions expressed

coming up tonight on abc 7 at k506r7b8g9s cmafest. a music festival hosted be i the hottest country stars. stay with us for abc 7 news at 11:00. it is back to school for thousands of students across the bay area. abc 7 news was in san jose, students arrived at willow glen bright and early for the start of another school year. at least 40 local districts start class today, including antioch, san leandro and san jose unified.

novato school starts tomorrow, rather than as early as 7:15 a.m. high schools will start at 8:00, which gives students a little more time to sleep. >> and parent. le anne melendez tells us this is a trend across the country. >> reporter: there was much excitement at san marin high in novato. the school district hopes that enthusiasm continues as teens will be less sleep deprived. >> all the research is pretty clear now that teenagers need for sleep tonight. right. their cycles, they need to go to bed at 11:00 or 12:00. >> reporter: school began as early as 7:15. >> that will now clang to 8:00 in the morning. they pushed for this new time. >> everybody was tired and no one was happy to be here during first period. everyone was groggy, people were like basically falling asleep in class every day the teachers

noticed. >> parents, teachers and community members weighed in. the school board approved it last april. but it's a burden for some parents that need to be at work early. >> sleeps in, but that's what weekends are for, you know my son has been going here two years now so we've gotten used to the schedule. >> but the school district is allowing parents to drop off their children earlier that 8:00. california is considering pushing back the school start throughout the state. senate bill 328 would change start times for middle and high schools in ka. to no earlier than 8:30 a.m.. so far, other districts in the country have opted to start at a later time. as a result, attendance is up and so are grades. in novato, le anne melendez, abc 7 news. >> since there is an impact to transportation, elementary and middle schools in novato will start later. >> i would have loved like an 11:00 a.m. start time. >> perfect.
