live where you live. this is abc 7 news. police pushback a line of protesters as tensions rose in boston today, but overall things remained calm. i'm eric thomas. thank you for joining us. tonight police reporting 33 arrests. thousands turned out with the gold to stand up to hate against a group that organized a self-described free speech rally. one of the speakers at that rally today was kyle chapman. city leaders in stran aan franc and berkeley are watching because similar rallies are planned here next saturday. abc news reporter stephanie ramos is in boston tonight.

>> a sea of people and police in boston. a line of protesters there to march against hate and racism stretching two miles long. the crowds descending on boston common one week after the violence in charlottesville. that's where one woman died and dozens more injured after a car plowed into a crowd of demonstrators allegedly driven by a white nationalist. >> after last saturday i cannot be silent anymore. >> i like what i saw. this is democracy. this is what we're supposed to be doing. >> in boston an estimated 40,000 people showed up protesting a free speech event that included speakers with ties to extremist views. security was tight. no weapons allowed. roads blocked. but the rally broke up early avoiding the violent confrontation seen in other parts of the country. >> that's what we were hoping

for, an overwhelming crowd of peaceful people. free speech but not hate speech. >> i was glad to see the crowd was very small. >> counter protesters here in boston only seen in some small scuffles with police. the debate over racism is raging in many parts of the country. local governments removed statues honoring confederate leaders from the civil war. duke university joined that list taking down a statute e of robe e. lee. signs of change amidst deep national divisions. stephanie ramos, abc news, boston. >> after taking quite a hit of heat for the events in charlottesville, president trump tweeted i want to applaud the many protesters who were speaking out against bigotry and hatred. our country will soon come together as one.

>> plans to introduce a bill calling for removal of federal statues inside the capitol. >> we're going to ask everyone to come together once and for all to say these individuals should not be in public spaces where children and where african-americans and where people who feel this pain each and every day have to really feel is every time they walk through the capitol and see it. >> she says she'll bring up the bill when congress returns from its summer break next month. ncht a few monday people gathered today in support of equality and diversity. abc 7 news was at civic star plaza for the open mic event. mountain view's vice mayor said it was a place where peeked could talk about their concerns. >> we're for sprfree speech, diversity equality. you can see a lot of people are here today because they believe in that and they definitely are really worried about the direction that donald trump is trying to take the nation.

>> the event was originally organized in response to the right wing march on google, which was in support of engineer who was fired over that controversial memo. the march on google was postponed because of what organizers called terrorist threats. developing news now in florida where a second police officer who was shot by a suspect has died died. it happened last night. people say the officers were attacked during a scuffle with eric glen miller. two men arrested in the bay area for a murder in chicago are now back in their home state. this is new video showing oxford university employee andrew warren and former northwest university professor arriving in chicago. both are suspected in the stabbing death of a cosmetologist who was in a relationship is latham. grief counselors will be at

oakland high school next week as they mourn the off duty oakland firefighter who was shot and killed in san jose. 30-year-old graduated from skyline and was an assistant baseball coach there before leaving to taken the fire academy. police are looking for the gun they say the 27-year-old used to shoot walter and another firefighter thursday night. the other victim is listed in stable condition. oakland mayor issued a statement saying we grief for our lost colleague and wish the injured firefighter a speedy recovery. a san francisco wells fargo was robbed today. a sign told customers the branch was closed due to an merge. a security guard posted outside said there was a robbery. details on the amount of money taken not released yet. in barcelona today there was a raid on the home of an iman suspected of radicalizing young men that killed 13 people. spain's king and queen met today

with some of the victims who were injured in thursday's attack in the las ramblas neighborhood. among more than 100 hurt are small children. the royals also visited a growing memorial on the plaza. we're now less than 48 hours from the great american eclipse and the bay area is getting ready for the event on monday morning. cordell bernard is live in san francisco with the details for us. cornell. >> reporter: eric, thank you. eclipse mania has pretty much hit the bay area. one of many places having events on monday, they'll be giving away some pairs of these eclipse glasses but not many. they'll even have music to go along with the solar event. if the eclipse had a sound track, it would be this. the world famous cronus quartet is rehearsing this written for monday's eclipse.

we be able to see the eclipse right here in the bay area. here is the eclipse forecast. >> we'll have clear skies for some, but clouds will fill some regions for others. let talk about the photograph as you get to monday morning. future weather will stop the clock at 9:01 monday morning. that is when the eclipse will begin for us locally. you see a lot of clouds around the cost and patchy fog. the max eclipse, this is when three-fourths of the sun is covered by the moon. that happens at 10:15 a.m. you see the fog is dissipating around the bay. however, we have thick cloud cover along the coast. best viewing spots, how it looks right now, get as far away from the coast as you can. if you can go to the higher elevations, perhaps mt. tam, you'll have much cleary skies there. we'll show you how the weekend will be finishing tomorrow. we want to see just how you're viewing the eclipse.

breaking news in oregon where two people died in a small plane crash where near two people are gathering to watch monday's eclipse.

the crash started a small brush fire. about that area. racing to fix the dam. the water resources just releas released this video of crews working to lease the emergency spillway. they need to have enough of the main spillway rebuilt by november 1st in times for the rain this is winter. last winter storms ripped a huge hole in the concrete structure and caused the evacuation of at least 200,000 over fears it could collapse. one of the country's oldest italian neighborhoods is celebrating its neighborhood today. food and fun filled north beach today. next we'll take you to the festival. >> and i'm

overnight tonight we'll have some high clouds spilling into parts of the bay. that coastal fog returning once again. mid 50s to lower 60s will be our overnight lows over the next 12 hours. 12 hour planner on your sunday, pretty much a carbon copy forecast in terms of ksky condition. we've got those morning clouds but but midday you know the pattern. sunshine for most. we're calling it nice for august out there by 4:00. 80s inland. the coast cool with that fog. te temperatures in the low 60s. 82 in san jose with a few high clouds spilling into the sky. 71 at oakland tomorrow. 78 at santa rosa. about 88 in antti yok. let's talk about what's

happening monday morning. that total solar eclipse. 12 states will see the sun completely covered by the moon. that path stretches from oregon all the way to south carolina. it will take about 90 minutes to cross the united states. the last time this happened here in the u.s., 1979. for us here locally in the bay area, we're going to see a partial solar eclipse. the moon will not completely cover the sun, but it will obstruct part of it. so the eclipse will begin 9:01 in the morning local time. you will start to see that moon move in front of the sun. by 10:15 local time this is when the mass eclipse will happen. 75% of the sun is covered by the moon. it's going to take some time for that sun to reemerge. that eclipse is going to end around 11:37 monday morning. get away from the coast. we'll have coastal clouds monday morning and have the special eye gear. you do not want to wear sunglasses and stare at the sun. you burn your eyes.
