good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thank you for joining us on this sunday, august 20th. let's start with the quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. good morning to you. hi, everyone. blanket of low clouds have actually brought temperatures up a little bit this morning. and anywhere from 2 to 4 degrees milder and we are looking at a system off shore there that will allow for more sunshine today. 60 here in santa cruz. see how gray it is. 62 in the city. 66 with sun in san jose. half moon bay, 61. live look outside from our exploratorium camera, numbers from the upper 50s to mid-60s, sunshine and our inland valleys. so sfo, delays of 55 minutes. getting brighter there. partly to mostly cloudy this morning, looking at more sunshine at the shoreline and it

will be cooler tomorrow with more fog for our eclipse. full look at that forecast and the seven-day outlook in a few minutes. we are following developing news in santa clara county where chp officers are investigating a deadly crash. it happened on highway 17 near bear creek road in los gatos. around 1:15 this morning. investigators say a car went off the side of a road into a tree. falling 100 feet down an embankment. two people were in that car, one died. it took santa clara county firefighters an hour to rescue a woman using rope systems to pull her up. paramedics transported her to the hospital. the chp says both victims had alcohol in their system. developing news out of martin martinez. the contra costa county sheriff's office is expected to give us more information today about an officer involved shooting. it happened last night around 10:40 on northbound 680 at the

pacheco boulevard exit. deputies were trying to stop a stolen vehicle that rammed a police car. one deputy fired a gun. no one was hit. two people were hurt in the car accident. authorities closed part of the freeway overnight. it reopened just before 1:00 this morning. this morning, federal investigators are looking into a plane crash that killed two people on board. the single engine home built plane left the san carlos airport yesterday. it was headed to oregon where people are gathering to watch the solar eclipse. abc 7 news reporter lonni rivera learned the owner of the plane is from menlo park. >> then i justkeptlooking and next thing i saw was black smoke. >> reporter: a smau plall plane heading to central oregon from san carlos, california. single engine wheeler built express crashed into this canyon, a mile south of the airport. >> coming in for a fun event in

our town. and, you know, something very tragic happened. >> reporter: the plane carrying the pilot and passenger was headed to madris, an area in oregon where thousands are ga gathering to watch the solar eclipse, it is registered to mark rich from menlo park. friends of rich tell us the family traveled a lot and enjoyed it. in san carlos, lonni rivera, abc 7 news. developing news from san mateo, the sheriff's office needs your help finding a missing mother and her 9-month-old son. 26-year-old been out of touch with her family. scott might be in the san luis obispo area, but also has contacts in alameda and contra costa counties. happening today, far right

demonstrators and counterprotesters are planning a gathering in orange county. the southern california rally follows a day of protests across much of the country. one week after the deadly violence at that white nationalist rally in charlottesville, virginia. abc news reporter stephanie ramos has the details on the largest gathering yesterday in boston. >> reporter: across the country, tensions running high as protesters and police swarmed the streets. >> tonight's rally and protest has concluded. at this time, you will be asked to leave. >> reporter: in dallas, people gathering against white supremacy, police on the scene in riot gear and on horsebac in atlanta, thousands of people marching in an anti-hate demonstration. >> let's tear down hate, love will conquer hate. >> while in memphis, hundreds gathering to call on the removal of a confederate statue.

and in boston, at least 40,000 people streaming through the streets according to police, trying to stop this free speech rally. out of concern it would be a platform for white supremacists, despite denials from the group's organizers. that rally featured at least one white supremacist speaker, but it ended quickly. and that's when things got heated. >> everybody coming down here. >> reporter: this man chased out of the park, running toward police as crowds chant after him. police forcefully pushing protesters back, making at least 33 arrests. >> i wanted to come out and confront them head on. and i didn't want to miss this chance. >> this coming just a week after the death of heather heyer in charlottesville, when violent protests between white supremacist groups and counterprotesters turned deadly. more rallies are planned for today. there is one in laguna beach, california, where demonstrators

are planning to call attention to victims of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants here in the u.s. counterprotesters are already there. stephanie ramos, abc news, boston. american idol is coming to abc. and some of those who think they have the chops to become the next singin sensation are lining up in oakland to audition. abc 7 news reporter alisa harrington joins us live from jack london square with details on some of the talent. good morning. >> reporter: the american idol bus is traveling all over the country, looking for the next singing superstar. today, it is in jack london square. what you're looking at are some of the hopefuls. they're auditioning in front of producers today, the celebrity judges are not here. what is happening is they're auditioning in front of producers. if they make it through this round, then they will audition for the celebrity judges including katy perry on a future date. there is a huge turnout here in oakland. you can see that the line

actually wraps all the way around jack london square. a few hundred, maybe more than a thousand people here. a lot of folks have brought their guitars, some singing original songs and a lot of people do think that there is big talent here in the bay area. let's chat with you. what's your name? >> evan pro. >> what are you singing today? >> i'm going to be singing praying by kesha. >> reporter: okay. what do you think about american idol coming back after a couple of years off the air? >> i think it is good they're bringing it back. it is like a piece of history coming back, like, a good piece of history like recurring. it is -- i know it helped bring a lot of stars in, like bringing their actual, like, it brought them their fame, like, you know, kelly clarkson, kerry underwood, who is my queen. but it is just, like, it is coming back and it is, like, a good familiar, like, feeling that is, yeah. >> reporter: good luck to you today let's chat with you here.

now? you see some of those hopefuls for american idol. the auditions are under way. there are hundreds of people in line. some have come quite early, hoping to be the next kelly clarkson or fantasia, maybe jennifer hudson. good luck to everybody. take a deep breath. then go out there and do your thing. grief counselors will be at oakland sky line high school this week as people mourn the oakland firefighter shot and killed in san jose. 30-year-old jake walter graduated from sky line and was an assistant baseball coach there before leaving to attend the fire academy. police are still looking for the gun that they say 27-year-old oliver june used to shoot walter and another firefighter on thursday night. the other victim listed in stable condition. oakland's mayor issued a

statement saying we grieve for our lost colleague and wish the injured firefighter a speedy recovery. this morning, investigators are looking into a fire at an east bay winery and historic building. it broke out during a wedding reception friday. no one was hurt but a couple who plan to get married there the next day wasn't sure if they would get their dream wedding. lesley brinkley spoke to the bride and groom in sunil. >> reporter: this couple got quite a scare on the eve of their wedding. >> they called us last night and said, hey, there are fire crews out here, half the venue is burning right now and we'll see maybe we can go for it tomorrow, maybe not. >> reporter: i couldn't hear the conversation, but i could hear britney go -- and i knew something was really wrong. >> reporter: at 5:30 friday night, the fire in the attic of this historic winery sent flames and smoke out the roof of the elston tasting room.

11 fire engines rushed here, a wedding party just finished a ceremony and stepped outside for cocktails. >> there was enough smoke where we felt like we needed to move, move their party. fortunately we have friends downtown, half a mile from here. >> reporter: the cake, the food, the drinks, all had to be moved as firefighters extinguished the blaze by 7:30. the alameda county fire department and cal fire told me they upgraded the water supply here about a year and a half ago and that gave them the volume of water they needed to save this 1890 mansion that is now listed on the national registry of historic places. firefighters managed to protect the antiques and the tiffany windows inside, extensive water damage meant drying out rugs and repairs to be made on the third floor and to the roof. >> it is really very beautiful. so i'm glad that they're going to be able to restore it. >> reporter: the tasting room is closed, but the event venue is okay. no injuries, a happy ending.

>> if all the hard stuff is in the beginning, then we're good. >> reporter: in sunil, lesley brinkley, abc 7 news. for the second game in a row, oakland raiders running back marshawn lynch sat during the national anthem. lynch remains seated for the anthem at last night's preseason game against the l.a. rams. he did the same thing during last week's preseason opener. the running back has not publicly said why he is sitting. new this morning, dozens of police officers in new york city are supporting former 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick. the gathering in brooklyn, new york, featured mostly minority officers. one exception, retired police officer frank serpico. he became famous in the 1970s for alleging corruption within the nypd. al pacino portrayed him in the movie serpico. kaepernick made headlines last year for sitting during the national anthem. he says he was protesting police brutality against

african-americans. as the nation gears up for tomorrow's solar eclipse, the people who run california's power grid are gearing up for a big dip in energy production. when the moon passes the sun monday, it will be spectacular. but it will also create a challenge for the state's energy producers. >> what we're going to see through the solar eclipse is a greater magnitude than what we have seen before. >> reporter: during the eclipse, the partial shadow will obscure 90% of the sun and then the northern part of the state. 60% in the south. that shadow will reduce solar power generation and enough to worry state regulators about keeping the state's lights on. >> that could lead to up to a 6,000 megawatt reduction in solar production on monday morning. >> reporter: that's enough to power 6 million homes. thanks to the speed at which the solar industry has grown, solar power is now a daily player in the state's overall energy

production. making up as much as 40% of the state's overall power supply on any given day. the solar eclipse could cut that in half. >> the utilities and the grid operator have been planning for this for over a year. we have the resources to back it up, so it shouldn't create any sort of reliability problem. >> reporter: the state public utilities commission says much of the demand during the eclipse will be met with other clean energy sources. natural gas and hydroelectric power. we would like to encourage customers to help manage the load, to help reduce distress on the grid by conserving themselves. >> reporter: the fee you see is asking you to turn off the lights and unplug unused electronics and appliances, leading up to and during the eclipse. >> on august 19th, millions of customers are going to see their thermostat light up. >> reporter: bay area smart thermostat maker nest will help you reduce the load on the

energy grid during the eclipse. >> if they're in an eligible area, they're going to be invited to participate in the first ever nest solar eclipse rush hour. >> reporter: nest thermostat owners will have the choice to opt in. if they do, the thermostat will automatically respond as the eclipse approaches. if needed, it will cool the home ahead of the eclipse. turning off air conditioning as the moon passes the sun, unless it is absolutely needed. >> we'll have offset everything so you're sitting comfortable for the full duration of the eclipse. >> reporter: there are more than 30 public eclipse viewing events happening all over the bay area tomorrow. in oakland, you can head to the chabot space and science center at 8:00 a.m. the exploratorium has an event at 9:00 a.m. in san jose, join others at hogue park beginning at 9:00. abc 7 news will have extensive coverage of the great american

eclipse including live local reports right before abc's special coverage beginning tomorrow morning at 10:00 anchored by abc's david muir. now, your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> good sunday morning. 24 hours from now, we'll be watching that sight. this fog footprint will look very much what we expect tomorrow. the fog here in the north bay, across the bay, over 80 into oakland. look at the clearing. significant clearing in the past hour. so you'll be nice and sunny in the east bay, south bay, parts of the peninsula. but you can see trying to pull away right now. but it is really going to be pretty cloudy at the coast. a system here offshore and this is what is pulling the clouds away right now. also working to keep the marine layer with us through the overnight hours. here is a look from a roof camera, the flag blowing. cool day at the coast. you'll get some sun. 62 in san francisco. 65 in mountain view.

64 for gilroy. half moon bay in the low 60s. this picture was looking pretty nice a few minutes ago. that shows you how the fog has moved around. upper 50s santa rosa. 66 in concord and livermore. and emeryville, it is gray, but beginning to get a little bit brighter. and this will be the case at this time tomorrow. so we're not going to lose the fog altogether. so best bet is to go away from the bay and the coast, partly to mostly cloudy this morning, some sun pretty much everywhere today. temperatures have been coming down. trend continues today and tomorrow and much of the workweek, including the solar eclipse afternoon. look at the fog this morning. hour by hour forecast really shows it rotating and pulling back and leaving us with a lot of sunshine today. but are we going to warm up any? no. we'll lose a couple of degrees. so as we look at the moon go over the sun tomorrow, 9:01, maximum eclipse is at 10:15. and then it ends at 11:37.

we will be looking at it moving from pacific to the atlantic, that takes 90 minutes from oregon to south carolina, passing through 12 states. 1979 the last time that happened. this time tomorrow, looking at the fog at 7:00. at 9:00, it pulls back. and 75% of the sun being covered at 10:15 with plenty of fog at the shoreline. no surprises here. you need head away from the coast, certainly north of the golden gate, looks a little gray. highs node san francisco, ranging from the upper 60s here, 77 in fremont. 82 in san jose. below average for august with 86 in livermore, 85, concord. 74, richmond. san rafael, 77. temperatures still cooler than we should be for the next several days. download our accuweather app and track the weather in your neighborhood, the temperatures hour by hour. and really looks like we'll go

nobody had the winning ticket again gwenn in last night's $535 million powerball drawing. here are the winning numbers. wednesday's winning numbers will be worth $650 million. it will be the second largest jackpot in powerball history. someone in l.a. did win more than a million dollars matching five numbers.

delays of about 53 minutes. but at least it is brightening up there. 62 in the city. 63 in oakland. 64 in gilroy. 65 mountain view. san jose, 66. look at all of the fog here from our tower camera. gray in san francisco. brightening up here, though, as well, with upper 60s. 66 now in concord. and speaking of the east bay, here is a look at walnut creek. looks hazy. you have the fog this morning. but look for partly cloudy skies for the next few hours. then sunny skies with 60s at the coast to mid-70s inland. cooler today with highs in the low 60s shoreline to the mid and upper 80s inland. the cooling trend continues for the first part of the week. but the second part of the week, that's a different story. i'll have the full details next with my accuweather seven-day forecast. >> lisa, thank you. president trump returns to the white house this evening. yesterday, he was watching the protest in boston and weighing in via twitter from his golf club in bedminster, new jersey.

his response to last weekend's violence in charlottesville continues to create a firestorm. abc news reporter david wright has the details. >> reporter: as these scenes played out on the streets of boston, the president watched anxiously here in bedminster. looks like many anti-police agitators in boston trump tweeted, police look tough and smart. adding, great job by all law enforcement officers and boston mayor marty walsh. the boston mayor shot back sharply, today, boston stood for peace and love, not bigotry and hate. we should work to bring people together, not apart. trump didn't take the bait. tweeting our great country has been divided for decades. sometimes you need protests in order to heal and we will heal and be stronger than ever before. trump's own administration could be in need of healing too. his former chief strategist steve bannon in a new interview

says no administration in history has been so divided among itself. later this week, the president heads out to arizona for a political rally, potentially courting controversy there. >> donald trump, our next president, of the united states. >> reporter: trump reportedly hinted he may pardon former maricopa county sheriff joe arpaio. >> and sheriff joe arpaio, great guy, tough. >> reporter: arpaio fashioned himself america's toughest sheriff. sheriff joe found guilty of criminal contempt after defying a federal judge's order to stop racial profiling. due to be sentenced in october. trump is also not on the best of trerms with arizona senators. this past week, jeff flake criticized trump's response to charlottesville and published an op-ed criticizing the emigration policy.

david wright, abc news, washington. the manhunt continues this morning for the suspected driver in that barcelona terror attack. police identified him as 22-year-old eunice jaquob. seven have been arrested or killed by police and yesterday police raided the home of an imam. officials believe he's responsible for radicalizing the suspects. >> i was frightened. i thought it was -- i heard police, and then we calmed down. >> police believe the imam may have been killed in a botched bomb-making operation the day before the barcelona attack. the death toll remains at 13. 53 injured victims are still in the hospital. dick gregory, a comedy pioneer and civil rights activist, has died. the st. louis native regularly performed on talk shows in the '60s and '70s. he wrote books and recorded

albums and was also actively pursuing social change. gregory marched with dr. martin luther king jr., he fasted for more than a month to protest the vietnam war. and later fought against pollution in black communities. he had recently been hospitalized for severe bacterial infection. dick gregory was 84 years old. hundreds of construction workers are racing against the clock to fix the dam at lake oroville. the state department of water resources released this video showing crews working to rebuild the damaged main spillway and emergency spillway. the job is not scheduled to be finished until next year. but they need to have enough of the main spillway rebuilt by november in time for the heavy rains expected this winter. last winter's storms ripped a huge hole in the concrete structure and caused an evacuation of nearly 200,000

people. music is filling the streets of oakland this weekend during the annual art and soul festival. abc 7 news at 12th and broad where bands are performing on five stages. event celebrates all types of music and includes a dance contest. there is also lots of food including soul and ethnic dishes. the fun continues today from noon to 6:00. a reminder several streets are closed during the festival including a stretch of 12th street. 14th and clay streets. we're a little more than 24 hours away from the great american eclipse. from the coast of oregon, to the shores of south carolina, millions of people are getting ready for this unforgettable event. marcy gonzalez was live in lincoln city, oregon, with the look at the growing excitement. hi, marcy.

again. i'm so excited to be here and see everyone in, you know, fellow singers, we're all excited to be here. >> all right. so, carolyn, i wanted to show you how this process works today. there is still time if anybody else wants to come out and audition. what happens is you come here, you fill out the paperwork, stand in that long line, it is moving pretty quick and what happens is then you audition in front of some producers. the celebrity judges are not here today. but what you did is you audition in front of the producers right here at jack london square. and if you make the cut, you move on to another round that happens in the future and that's when you audition in front of katy perry and some other celebrities and really get that big shot of being the next american idol. so this is happening all day long in oakland. a lot of people out here, a lot of excitement, great weather, so a lot of fun if this is something you've been considering doing. reporting live in oakland, alisa harrington, abc 7 news. >> i cannot believe no one wants

twitter, instagram or facebook using the #abc7 now. >> now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> good morning. live look outside. looks brighter out there. we're working on thinning out that cloud cover for you today. it has been atypical for august with the cooler weather for much of the month. and so why should we change it, right? we want some warm weather and it is still summertime. we will get to some warmer weather by the end of the week. right now, these numbers don't look too bad. lots of 60s. 62, san francisco and half ma moon bay. it is cool and gray up in santa rosa. you too are brightening up. 64, novato. by the delta, breezy, concord and livermore. you started with the sunshine and it will be a mild afternoon. you can see the flag here, and we are looking at sea breeze once again. but it is all about the system offshore that will continue to allow the local clouds and fog to mix out.

live doppler 7, holes in the overcast here. as we widen the perspective, this system, you can make out the cloud pattern here, pulling the fog away from the coast. it is also bringing up moisture into the sierra nevada. more thunderstorm activity little bit today. more so tomorrow into tuesday. here is santa cruz, damp, but you too looking at a sunnier afternoon with numbers below average. so partly to mostly cloudy to start out. and then sun at the coast, it is still going to be a relatively mild day around the bay. partly cloudy and cooling trend continues. for tomorrow, big partial solar eclipse. this time tomorrow, viewing it, hopefully in a clear spot and maximum eclipse, 10:15 and all ends at 11:37. so, of course, you know you have to be away from the coast, higher elevations, north bay mountains, santa cruz mountains good spots. and looks like we will have that stubborn fog with us tomorrow. so tomorrow morning, 7:00.

looks very similar to this morning. maybe you slept through it. by tomorrow, we'll look for the sunshine in the east bay. the far east bay. but partly choudy across the bay. and that fog looks to be clinging to the coast. don't go there if you want to see it, head inland a bit. by the afternoon, look how quickly it pushes back in. it is going to be with us for much of the workweek. with temperatures coming down a little bit today, it will be mild with those low 70s from san mateo to oakland this afternoon. how about 77 in san rafael. 78 in santa rosa. so we will be looking at nice afternoon with upper 60s and sun for the giants game. tonight, looking at more fog, pulling -- pushing over into the bay. that's why, yeah, tomorrow morning it is a concern because we just have been in this pattern day after day, download our accuweather app and subtle changes are with us all week long where we lose a few degrees inland, and then we come up a couple of degrees by the end of
