pair. >> reporter: now a very kind employee here at the space and science center gave me these. we had to sweet talk him. they are sold out almost everywhere. there are a few places where you can get them tomorrow. one being the space and science center. the other being local libraries like the berkeley library. the space and science center is expecting around 1,000 people to view the partial eclipse here atop the oakland hills. they'll have around 300 glasses to sell and they're hoping people are kind enough to share those. astronomers will also be on hand to help people with a few sets of professional viewing goggles. both the oakland and berkeley libraries will have a limited number of glasses to give away. shipments at all of these locations have been sold out or given away within hours this week. >> we had two separate shipments of solar glasses and they went out almost within the day.

so, we've just been -- today they've been calling, phone ringing off the hook. we're telling them to be there at 9:00 but it seems people will be there sooner than that. >> joseph says the glasses are there such high demand, he doesn't even know where they're hidden. you want to show up early to the viewing parties at both space and science center and berkeley library as they expect those glasses to be sold out very quick quickly. you do not want to look into the sun without viewing glasses. you can flip your phone into selfie mode and look through the camera at the sun. >> thanks for the advice. we've seen clear, blue skies for most of the day. that's great for viewing. we all know how quickly that can change in the bay area. more about the eclipse forecast,

drew tuma. >> for us here locally it will be a partial eclipse, not a total eclipse. still a sight to be seen. it will begin at 9:01 a.m. that's when the moon will first move in front of the sun. max eclipse, when about 75% of the sun is covered by the moon. that going to happen at 10:15 a.m. let's talk about the cloud forecast. future weather will get you into tomorrow morning. the eclipse begins socked in along the coast with patchy fog around the bay. your best bet when that max eclipse happens, get as far away from your coast. santa rosa, antioch, ideal spots to view the eclipse. we'll take a much closer look at the eclipse and show you a warming trend on the way. abc7 news will have extensive coverage of the great american eclipse, including live local reports before abc's special coverage beginning tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., anchored by abc's david muir.

tomorrow night the president will address the nation on military strategy in afghanistan. he tweeted he had reached a decision but he did not clarify what that is. today president trump returned to the white house after a tough week. stephanie ramos has more. >> reporter: after a tumultuous week, criticism over his response to violence in charolettesville. >> he he doesn't say what's politically correct. sometimes that gts them in trouble. he does not have a racist bone in his body. >> reporter: that from jerry falwell jr., back the president after his speech on tuesday. a speech that even fellow republicans called out for potentially defending white supremacists. >> but not all of those people were neo-nazis. believe me. not all those people were white supremacists. but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides. >> do you believe there were -- >> i have no idea. he has inside information that i

don't have. i don't know if there were historical purists there trying to preserve some stat tuesday. i don't know. >> former secretary of homeland security jeh johnson says the president should have spoken in a way to unite, not divide the country. >> i would encourage him through his words to try to do that, not just speak to his base, but to speak to all of america. he is the president for all of us in this country. >> that debate continues, even as the white house is reeling from a separate staffing issue. former chief strategist steve bannon still publicly talking about leaving the west wing. in a new interview, bannon says no administration in history has been so divided among itself. >> you know, the problem you have is when you have chaos among your staff. staff in, staff out, new people here, new people there. it's hard to get anything done. >> bannon is at the helm of right wing breitbart. on saturday a report that ivanka trump is taking credit for the bannon departure.

>> getting to have this opportunity is once in a lifetime for anybody here. ♪ he got >> reporter: sky was one of the first in line. she arrived at 4:00 a.m. and told me she's excited "american idol" is back. >> so, the year they ended "american idol" was the year that i was finally old enough to be on it, like the next season, so i cried for about a week. this has been my dream since i was about 5. >> reporter: hopefuls sang in front of producers. 16-year-old giana from fremont didn't make the cut this time. >> he'll get over it because this is what i was meant to do. >> reporter: she'll try next year. she got the coveted golden ticket. >> i'm excited. >> reporter: they'll try out in front of celebrity judges, including indicakaty perry at a date. >> we have a link to the

25 cyclists, many of them cancer survivors, are on way. they were presented a $5,000 check addition or they presented it to the firefighters cancer prevention. some riders are active duty or retired firefighters from several fire departments in california. for the 48th straight year, art in the park. a large crowd turned out for free day of arts and crafts. there was lots of food and family fun. a silent auction was held to raise money for local arts. san francisco mayor ed lee got up early to play ping pong.

this was the mayor's chinatown ping pong tournament. five-player teams took on all comers. can you see more from the mayor's twitter pictures. he prefers singles. we're wrapping up a weekend that featured temperatures slightly below average and that will continue into monday as well. live doppler 7 along with satellites showing you the majority of the region has sunny skies. partly to mostly cloudy conditions along the coast. just to our east, live doppler 7 showing you some thundershowers have popped up in the sierra. as the sun begins to set, they lose their available energy. those showers will fall apart and not affect us here in the bay area. tomorrow morning a lot of eyes will be to the sky as our solar eclipse gets under way. what's happening in the solar system is the sun, the moon and the earth will be in perfect alignment. this actually happens once every two years or so, somewhere around the globe.

it just so happens this time it's going to be across the united states. the sun is actually 400 times bigger than the moon but it's so far away from us that in the sky tomorrow morning it will look the same size at the moon. the moon will cast an umbral shadow when it blocks out the sun for a total eclipse. that shadow is only about 70 miles wide on the path of totality. a broader shadow will stretch from alaska down to mexico. that's when the moon blocks out a portion of the moon for a partial solar clips. that's what we'll experience here tomorrow morning. one of the best spots to be in the bay area. a live look, pointing inland. this is one of the spots featuring mainly clear skies from the start to finish of the eclipse. move as far away from the coast for optimum viewing of that event. out there, 60s and 70s across the board. 68 in oakland. 76 that number in san jose.

66 and partly cloudy in san francisco. brentwood, one of our warm spots on the map, at 84 degrees. overnight here's the setup, that traditional coastal fog. patchy fog around the bay. numbers faulgs into the mid-50s and low 60s over the next 12 hours. that partial solar eclipse for us will feature that moon covering three-fourths of the sun. this will begin at 9:01 a.m. tomorrow morning. that peak, that time of max eclipse where 75% of the sun was covered. that will happen at 10:15 a.m. let's talk about the cloud forecast tomorrow morning. future weather, hour by hour, as the eclipse starts cloudy along the coast. we're clear from napa to a antioch, fremont to san jose. you want to get away from the coast because a lot of cloud cover including san francisco. tomorrow, concord, livermore, san jose to see clear skies. solar eclipse on the way tomorrow. morning cloudy coasts, clear

final catch of the year at junior league world series, chinese taipei taking on pennsylvania. over the wall. what a grab. wow. that is spectacular a play he will remember for a long time. unbelievable catch. the important thing to remember about the nfl preseason, don't overreact. it's only preseen. now, that might be easier said than done when talking about the raiders. you see, their offense can light up the scoreboard but their defense has some major issues. raiders lost 24-21 to rams at coliseum. l.a. threw the game winning touchdown pass with a little more than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter. another big concern is former cal quarterback jared goff led the rams on three scoring drives against most of the raiders' defensive starters. >> less concern with the play call and more concerned with just basic execution right now.

we go a long way when we clean some of those things up. the things we've talked about for too long in terms of communication errors and violations that keep you from being really good on defense. those just have to get cleaned up. >> now, as bad as the raiders looked on defense, the 49ers looked even worse on offense at home against denver. the niners had four first half turnovers in a 33-14 loss to the broncos. brian hoyer struggled. he was 8 of 11 for 89 yards. threw an interception that wasn't his fault but the play that's going to haunt him for a while is the fumble that slips out of his hands when he's trying to throw a pass. >> it's like the worst feeling you go to throw the ball, you're looking and you have no idea where it is. it's literally the worst feeling i've had as a quarterback. >> i mean, that whole game was concerning. five turnovers in a game, four turnovers in the first half, struggling to run the ball there, too. just looking at the -- throughout the game. it's really tough to win when
