they have a jet, a giant hangar to the right of me. of course, the main event will be coming in just about five hours. something very cool to see in the sky. we're talking about the solar eclipse. it comes at about 10:15 this morning. nasa ames is hosting a viewing party starting at 8:00 a.m., along with eclipse glasses available, they'll show views of the eclipse from high altitude balloons, sat lides, and telescopes. if you don't have a seattle, the public event registration is at capacity and registration is closed. chabot space center in oakland is also holding a viewing party. about 1,000 people expected there. show up early and good luck getting the eclipse glasses if you don't have them. >> sold out everywhere. calling all the local institutions, libraries, amazon's been getting orders that are canceled. >> the eclipse glasses will be

necessary for viewing the three quarters eclipse sun in the bay area. another way to do is it take selfie mode. you can look at the solar eclipse from the safety of your phone. you can also take a pretty cool selfie as well. >> you can save yourself like $60. people are upcharging on these like crazy. that was a good tip. thank you. i forgot you can't see anything. >> let's go to alexis and check out what's going on. you have some tips, which are probably common sense, but good to repeat them. >> i want to point that out. these are very obvious driving tips for the eclipse today. you know, some reminders just to keep everybody top of mind for you today. we're expecting the partial eclipse between 9:00 and 11:30. don't attempt to watch this while driving, and of course, i'm sure some folks are still going to do that. make sure you're paying attention. there's probably going to be some distracted drivers on the roads today. the maximum eclipse, about 10:15

this morning. make sure you have your headlights on if they don't flip on automatically, we could see lower light, of course, and we want to make you as visible as possible, and watch out for pedestrians. along with distracted drivers, we imagine a lot of folks will be looking up at the sky. be careful on the roads today. back to you. >> thanks. happening now, a search and rescue effort under way for ten sailors missing after a navy ship collided with a tanker. >> the search and rescue operation is under way for ten u.s. sailors missing after the uss john mccain collided with an oil tanker off the coast of singapore. the navy says the collision occurred as the guided missile destroyer was heading towards singapore for a routine visit. after the collision, a gaping hold seen in the mccain's left

rear side. the impact caused significant damage to the hull of the ship, leading to flooding to nearby compartments, including the crew's sleeping quarters. five sailors sustained injuries. four of those injured were medically evacuated to a hospital for nonlife threatening injuries. this is the second navy destroyer to collide with a merchant vessel in the pacific in two months. back in june, seven sailors lost their lives when the uss fitzgerald collided with a much larger cargo ship off the coast of japan. last week, the navy relieved the fitzgerald's commanding officer and two others for mistakes leading to the deadly crash. >> we now have two u.s. navy ships, very sophisticated capable navy ships that are no longer in service in an area and time when the north korean threat is at its highest. >> back at the white house last night, president trump was asked about the mccain's collision. the president also shared his concerns in a tweet. thoughts and prayers are with our u.s. navy sailors aboard the

uss john s. mccain. senator mccain, whose father and grandfather are the namesakes of the ship, is also weighing in. he said he and his wife are keeping american sailors aboard the uss john s. mccain in our prayers. abc news, washington. >> a south florida uber driver is suing company for the right to carry a gun. jose says his rights are infringed upon because he's not able to lawfully carry his firearm. san francisco based uber has a policy that bans drivers and passengers from carrying firearms. he says he doesn't feel safe behind the wheel. inquestion is whether state and local laws favor independent contractors like uber drivers. happening today, several students at san jose state university will stage a sit-in. they will be protesting the return of professor lewis aptekar. he was put on paid leave after investigators found he sexually harassed a student. he's scheduled to teach two

classes starting this week. several students want him to be replaced. his attorney claims third party investigations cleared his client of wrongdoing. >> a creative plan to house the homeless is being scaled back. the original goal was to create villages. using the tiny homes you see here in 99 potential sites across the city. after heating community backlash, the city imposed stiffer restrictions,reloseducie number of potential sites to four. city council members will discuss the four remaining sites at their meeting next tuesday. 5:07 now. from the live desk, big ben has fallen silent in london as a major restoration project gets under way. the bongs of the bells stopped this morning during a four-year conservation project that includes repair of the queen

elizabeth tower. big ben has been stopped several times since it first sounded in 1859, but this current project will mark the longest occasion of silence. it will still sound on big occasions like new year's eve. let's take a look at the timing once again for today's great american solar eclipse. it's going to begin at 9:01, peak at 10:15, and end at 11:37 just to give you an update. probably going to tell you a lot of stuff you already know. here we are at 10:15. clearing out in the south bay, clearing in our inland east bay. napa valley is starting to clear, but look at the cloud cover along the east bay shore. and most of the peninsula. at least down to possibly san mateo, and look at 101. still pretty cloudy from novato all the way to santa rosa and san francisco, you're very cloudy. by the time we get to the end of it, though, we're still having a

few clouds around the east bay shore line. the coast is still very cloudy, and so is 101 up around santa rosa. so it looks like we've got to get above about 2200 to feet. go farther east, get over the altamont pass into tracy. you should be fine there, and down into the south bay, our best bet. let's talk about oakland, unified school district going back to school this morning. gray morning. you're not going to see the eclipse. maybe towards the end of it, the clouds will start to open. going to be breezy. 63 at 7:00, to about 69 at 3:00. let's take a look at temperatures around san francisco. west portal, 59. everybody else around 60 to 62 degrees. an area you won't see the eclipse at all. 64 in santa clara. 62 in walnut creek right now. pleasanton and petaluma and american canyon. quick look at your activity planner today. breezy across the north parts of the bay into the delta. at the coast, king tides today. the highest one we just had was

a major hollywood producer is facing a lawsuit over the death of his assistant. >> her family claimed she was fed drugged and call before drowning in a trip to bora bora in 2015. >> in this morning's "gma" first look, joel silver, behind blockbusters is sued in connection with the death of his former assistant. the family of the assistant claiming in august of 2015, their 28-year-old daughter accompanied silver and his family along with a number of celebrities to bora bore a. about two weeks into the trip, musgrove's body was found washed aon the banked of the lagoon outside her bungalow. officials say she drowned. in their lawsuit, the musgrove family claims members of silver's entourage furnished her with excessive amounts of alcohol and cocaine and she was overworked, resulting in excessive fatigue and heat stroke while on the trip. four factors the family claims caused or contributed to the

that means slow sunshine and mild temperatures today. patchy fog tonight, and a slow warming trend. what i have done is see the colors of black and white and gray. those are the clouds. the darker the cloud, the thicker it is going to be. you can see in the south bay, 10:30 this morning, most of it is cleared out from about milpitas, sunnyvale, southward. temperatures in the upper 70s to mid 80s. now, all the way up to redwood city, looks pretty clear at 10:15. you get north of that, you see cloud cover for the rest of the peninsula up to san francisco. cloud cover all up and down the coast. low to mid 70s this afternoon on the peninsula. mid 60s along the coast. cloud cover, you can see it completely clouded over in san francisco. 67 degrees at 10:15. in the north bay, places north of novato all the way up to santa rosa. pretty cloudy. sonoma, cloudy, but napa looking pretty clear. same thing with lakeport. temperatures in the mid 70s to 80. the entire east bay shore until

you get to fremont, pretty cloudy. maybe newark, some clouds, some breaks in the clouds, same thing in hayward. everybody else pretty cloudy. by 10:15, our inland east bay neighborhoods will be clearing out also. in the hills, there may be a few clouds to the west of the san ramon valley. temperatures here in the low to mid 80s. here's my accuweather seven-day forecast. what you'll see is a slow warming trend to bring our temperature back to summer type levels by friday, saturday, and sunday. >> a couple issues to get around. i have updates on both of these collisions. westbound 580, good news just before you get to eden canyon road, we have a multicar collision. they already pushed that off to the side, though. so emergency crews still on the way. they're calling for an ambulance, but that's no longer blocking the two right lanes. some delays as you head to the castro valley area. let's take you back up to fairfield. westbound 80 near the truck scales, five-car collision. we heard we had that cleared to the shoulder, now they're saying

napa valley. here's a look at walnut creek where it is cloudy and about 62 degrees. we come back in about eight minutes, i'll go through minute by minute look of when the cloud cover is going to open up for us. temperatures, low to mid 60s. we'll stay in the low to mid 60s at the coast. 71 at 7:00. and 73 to 79. so the lack of sunshine for a couple hours is definitely going to keep our temperatures down today. i'll be back with that cloud forecast next. here's alexis. >> more and more folks on the roads as a lot of students heading back to school this week and many headed back last week. so definitely seeing the volumes increasing. we have a couple slow spots this morning off the bat. westbound 580, the crash has been moved to the shoulder and still a couple miles of stop and go traffic, but that's up to 25 miles per hour. not so great on westbound 80 before suisun valley. that's due to a five-car crash. you're crawling at 2 miles per hour. chp says they're really close to getting this crash totally

mourn the firefighter shot and killed in san jose. jake walter graduated from skyline. he was an assistant baseball coach there before leaving to attend the fire academy. mees are still looking for the gun. they say 27-year-old oliver juinio used to shoot walter and another firefighter thursday night. the firefighters were confronted by at least two men outside an event in the japantown neighborhood. the gunfire erupted without warning after a brief exchange of words. the wonded firefighter remains in the hospital. >> new details on the plane that crashed near an oregon eclipse site. mark rich of menlo park was the only person on the plane. he died in the crash. he was the registered owner. the plane took off from the san carlos airport and crashed in madras, a gathering spot for eclipse watchers. they learned a family member of the pilot was originally scheduled to be on the trip but did not end up going. >> the suspect facing arson

charges for the fire that burned the berkeley hills earlier this month is expected to appear in court. the 24-year-old of concord is scheduled to be in court for a preliminary hearing this morning. bautista pled not guilty two weeks ago. court documents show he confessed to a police officer that he started the 20-acre fire with a cigarette lighter. on to developing news on a wildfire burning in yosemite. crews say it has burned to nearly five square miles. evacuation orders remain in place for the tiny community and the campers in yosemite. residents were ordered to clear out on saturday. the wildfire had been burning for a week. it is 10% contained this morning. thunderstorms possible today in yosemite also. could aggravate the situation with local gusty breezes. 9:0001 it begins. we max out at 10:15 at 75% and the eclipse ends at 11:37.

how about the cloud cover? we'll start at 9:00. you can see pretty much everybody covered. by 10:15, the south bay is uncovered. holes in the sunshine or in the cloud cover will start to develop on the peninsula up to san mateo. and up to about fremont. from 10:15 to the end, more holes will develop in the cloud cover around the bay, but notice, it never completely goes away. so you'll have to be dodging clouds to see the end of the eclipse there. you won't be able to see it at all along the coast and more than likely, you won't be able to see it at all in san francisco. at least not without help. here's a look at our temperatures. 55 in santa rosa, a cool spot. tiburon, 59. bodega bay, 58. everybody else in the low to mid 60s. that's pretty much the temperature everywhere else. let's talk about school. san francisco unified school district, cloudy, 60, partly sunny and 65 at 3:00.

a pittsburg man faces charges after deputies say he tried to run them down in martinez. the sheriff's office says joey carroll led deputies on a chase in a stoler car late saturday night. he rammed into the patrol car and a deputy fired add him twice. carroll wasn't hit. ee also wasn't done. he's accused of driving the wrong way on interstate 680 and then hitting another car. carroll was tweeted at a hospital and released. deputies say he violated his probation. >> a quarter to 6:00. san francisco police are looking for six rifles stolen from a car. it was parked on leyland avenue and visitation valley. the owner was in the process of moving and staying in the area over the weekend. the theft was discovered yesterday morning. >> governor brown and democrats in the legislature are set to tackle california's affordable housing crisis. more than a dozen bills in play, and votes on them could start this week. a bond measure on the table would provide $3 billion to fund

it's 5:54. look at these thieves in arkansas. they went to great lengths, didn't they? they operated a large caterpillar forklift to rip a drive-through atm out of the ground in the early morning hours last wednesday. and they got away. police say they don't know how much loot the robbers actually got away with. they're asking the public for help. i should note, a lot of these now have gps systems. >> hundreds of volunteers making sure that deserving kids are ready for school. abc7 news was at berkeley where volunteers supplied thousands of school and dental kits. they say rr so important because donations are actually down by
