zoo turned two and celebrated with a special bucket and a big birthday cake. those are some of our top stories on this wednesday, august 23rd. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> you cannot look at that and not smile. >> i did not expect that. >> thank you for that, bei bei. it's your birthday, but you're making us smile. >> a lot of news to get to this morning. we have severe storms heading into the northeastern states. >> some of the strongest storm cells have moved through new jersey, the new york city area and now into new england. >> the storm system is coming out of the midwest where heavy rain in a short amount of time caused some big flooding. >> we saw so many dramatic scenes from that area. hundreds of calls in the kansas city area alone for rescues. abc's alex perez has the story. >> reporter: the deadly flash flood emergency, trapping families in their homes. parts of the kansas city metro area getting up to 10 inches of torrential rain.

>> evacuate the area. >> reporter: more than 160 water rescues. one man caught in high water losing his life. >> rushing water is a whole another animal. it can move a great deal of weight with its force and can literally sweep those cars off the roads very quickly. >> reporter: firefighters uses a ladder truck to receive a woman out of a tree. they got her safely out of the trees and seven members of this familiar when i their pets trapped on the roof for hours. >> look at the flow of the water here. and that's what they're going to have to overcome to be able to rescue this family. >> we woke up around 4:30. it was already too late to take anything out. we got on the roof and kept calling the police. >> reporter: finally, rescued with the help of good samaritans. and you can see the power of these raging floodwaters, picking up this massive propane tank, slamming it into this building, usually this time of year they see 4 inches of rain. so far they've seen 18 inches

this past month. overland park, kansas. >> unbelievable scenes there, and south texas is likely to see major flooding this weekend as the remnants of harvey move over the area. by friday, it could be a category one hurricane. nearly all the models are showing it moving to texas. bringing heavy rain and gusty winds. let's move on to the other big breaking news story this morning. president trump's campaign-style speech and the protests overnight in phoenix. >> there were thousands of supporters inside the convention center and thousands of protesters outside. president trump claimed his accomplishments as president, criticized his opponents, including some republicans and blasted the news media. >> in particular, he said the press twisted the way he handled the violence in charlottesville. abc's danya bacchus is there at the rally. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms, the display of

hatred, bigotry and violence. that's me speaking. >> reporter: president trump defending the way he handled charlottesville. he seemed to equate nazis to protesters. >> then i said racism is evil. do they report that i said that racism is evil? you know why? because they are very dishonest people. >> reporter: instead, lashing out at the press, despite criticism from members of his own party. he also renewed his push to repeal obamacare and hinted at a pardon of joe arpaio, who was convicted of criminal contempt for defying a federal judge's order to stop racial profiling in his roundups of immigrants. >> i'll make a prediction. i think he's going to be just fine, okay? but i won't do it tonight, because i don't want to cause any controversy. is that okay? >> reporter: after the rally, trump supporters and protesters coming face-to-face. at one point, demonstrations turning violent.

>> started getting shot at, both by rubber bullets and pepper spray. >> reporter: the president ignoring a plea from the city's mayor to postpone the rally because emotions are still raw after charlottesville, saying trump has doused racial tensions with gasoline. >> look, the president blew it after charlottesville. it was really a failure of moral leadership. >> reporter: what was a largely peaceful demonstration now turning violent after the rally has ended. police say people started throwing rocks and bottles at them and they responded with pepper balls. they are now asking everyone to leave the area. diane and kendis? >> thanks to danya there. we should point out that the president is spending the night in phoenix. only the first time since taking office that's not at a trump property or at the white house overnight. and the president is also out with a new strategy in afghanistan. we're learning a little bit more about that. >> the secretary of state, rex tillerson, told reporters that strategy is intended to pressure the taliban into negotiating an end to the war. >> tillerson said the u.s. could consider sanctions or other steps against pakistan if it

doesn't crackdown on the taliban, and he refused to say how many more american troops would soon be heading into that fight. and the navy's relieving vice admiral joseph aucoin, the leader of the pacific fleet. he's being replaced because of four accidents this year alone involving ships under his command, the most recent involving the "uss john s. mccain," which collided with a tanker. divers have found remains. as bob woodruff reports. >> reporter: search and rescue teams locating the first remains of those ten missing from the flooded "uss john s. mccain" in the straight of malacca. some sailors still sleeping at the time of impact. their quarters flooding in seconds as they struggled up small exits like this one.

dexterity-challenged disciples of rock. you've got the feeling, but you can't play a lick. it's okay, you can still thread with the best of them at the world air guitar championship. it's what we love on this wednesday, august 23rd. ♪ up, down, turn around from abc news, this is "world news now." >> you know, the funny thing is, it kind of sounds like we're rocking out to this jazz tune when the beat changes. >> no air guitar to the intro. >> no air guitar, but we can swim with the best of them. we are going to the breaking news in phoenix. tear gas deployed on demonstrators to president trump's speech. >> after the speech, protesters grew unruly that threw bottles and rocks at police. the cops responded with tear gas to clear the area. and you can see some people were also dowsing their faces with

water to get some of that tear gas off. >> one guy was actually shot with a rubber bullet on live t there in phoenix. this is what preceded it, a nearly 90-minute speech by the president aimed at rallying his base. he defended his response to charlottesville and hinted at an eventual pardon for the local sheriff there. the president of criticized senators for failing to repeal obamacare. and local leaders across the country for trying to remove confederate statues. >> abc's danya bacchus joins us live this morning. what can you tell us so far? >> reporter: what we know right now, police have just removed the last protesters from this area. and for the most part, during the day, the protests here were largely peaceful. but it was after that rally ended that things got violent with police saying that people started throwing rocks and bottles at them. >> we condemn in the strong els possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence.

that's me speaking. >> reporter: president trump defending the way he handled charlottesville, where he seemed to equate self-proclaimed nazis to protesters. >> then i said racism is evil. did they report that i said that racism is evil? you know why? because they are very dishonest people. >> reporter: instead, lashing out at the press, despite criticism from members of his own party. he also renewed his push to repeal obamacare and hinted at a pardon of joe arpaio, who was convicted of criminal contempt for defying a federal judge's order to stop racial profiling in his roundups of immigrants. >>i think he's going to be just fine, okay? but i won't do it tonight, because i don't want to cause any controversy, is that okay? >> reporter: after the rally, supporters and protesters coming face-to-face. at one point demonstrations

turning violent. >> started getting shot out by rubber bullets and pepper spray. >> reporter: the president ignores a call to cancel the rally. because emotions are still raw after charlottesville. saying trump doused the violence with gasoline. >> the president blew it after charlottesville, i mean, it was really a failure of moral leadership. >> reporter: again, things turning violent after the rally ended, with police saying people were throwing rocks and bottles at them and they had to respond with tear gas and pepper spray, that crowd dispersing the police just removing the last of the protesters. >> the president was talking about the crowd, saying there weren't that many outside. i saw photos where it appeared there were people on top of garages, all over the place before it turned violent. what was it like? >> reporter: yes, there were plenty of people outside. so i'm not sure what the president is referring to. now granted, there were plenty of trump supporters also

standing outside surround being the convention center, waiting to go inside. but if you walk just a couple blocks away from the convention center, that's where you saw hundreds, maybe thousands of protesters standing outside, of course, coming face-to-face, having verbal altercations with some of the trump supporters. >> danya, the police were obviously worried. what seemed to be the trigger point that turned this from a peaceful protest into a violent one? and i just wonder, what was it like from your vantage point? >> reporter: you know, that is a good question, we were pretty far. for our safety, we were pretty far from the crowds here, but it seemed everything was peaceful. you did hear chanting while the rally was going on. but it was after the trump supporters started coming out of the rally, that's when things turned violent.

now i must say during the day, the tension was definitely there between trump supporters and those protesters. but you didn't think that it was going to turn violent. you know, they were exchanging words. we heard there were some minor scuffles, but nothing too major. i do believe it was after that rally when people started coming out, probably a little fired up, maybe from the president's speech that they came out, and words were exchanged between protesters and things became violent. >> it kind of turned, but it does appear as if calm has returned to the streets of phoenix where the president is spending the night. danya, thank you. we're going to turn to the relationship with mitch mcconnell. it is reportedly on extremely shaky ground. according to the "new york times," the two haven't spoken to each other in weeks and it says mcconnell has privately shown uncertainty that the president will be able to save his presidency. they refer to a phone call that turned into a profane shouting match when mcconnell accused the president of bungling the obamacare repeal debate. and there's no official word

about how many more americans will be joining the fight, but the first new troop deployments could take place within days. secretary of state rex tillerson raised some eyebrows when he mentioned the possibility of not winning in afghanistan. >> this entire effort is intended to put pressure on the taliban to have the taliban understand you will not win a battlefield victory. we may not win one, but neither will you. so at some point, we have to come to the negotiating table and find a way to bring this to an end. >> tillerson said the u.s. could also consider sanctions or other steps against pakistan if it doesn't crackdown on the taliban, and he praised north korean leader kim jong un for showing restraint on the use of nuclear weapons. tillerson said the u.s. could open a dialog with north korea. north korea mocked the president as a quote, mad guy.

and secretary james mattis met with iraqi leaders in baghdad. mattis said isis is on the run. he also expressed confidence that u.s.-backed iraqi forces will finish off militants. but warned that the fight i fighting would not be over anytime soon. back at home. protesters pressed for the removal of a statue which honors students who fought for the confederacy. barricades were surrounding the silent sam statue. there were some tense moments and two people were arrested. first responders handled more than 60 calls for water rescues. and hundreds of other emergency calls. more than nine inches of rain fell in the area. the area has gotten nearly three times the normal rainfall since july. a family of seven was trapped on the roof of the house for hours and their calls to 911 went unanswered. >> we woke up around 4:30.

it was already too late to take anything out. it was already up to our ankles. then an hour passed. it was going up to our knees. then like around 8:00, it was all the way up here. >> terrifying circumstances there. they were finally rescued by private citizens in a military-style truck. there's no rain in the forecast for the kansas city area for the next few days. the storm system is now moving to the northeast. they have a little break in the rain. let's turn our focus to an interesting case. german police have pulled thousands of donald trump shaped drugs off the streets. police have taken orange ecstasy pills that apparently look like the president's head. the drugs and the cash were discovered saturday in a car about 50 miles from the dutch border. could be anyone, right? the 51-year-old driver and 17-year-old son are now under arrest. just when you think the stories

uncover new evidence, human remains. abc's juju chang spoke with him. >> reporter: for 12 years, natalee holloway's disappearance has remained an unsolved mystery. the 18-year-old went missing on a high school graduation trip to aruba. now natalee's father dave says his 18-month investigation with david ward has yielded a break through, thanks to an informant, finding what they say are human remains. >> i already conditioned myself that this was not real and i was literally shocked. that they were human remains. >> reporter: the informant led you to these remains. >> that's correct. along with the person that was friends with joran van der sloot. >> reporter: holloway was a fresh faced 18-year-old with a scholarship lined up, forever frozen in time in that senior portrait. >> she was a goal setter and knew exactly what she was going to do in life. >> reporter: she a very bright future. >> oh, absolutely. >> reporter: van der sloot, the

man seen with her before she disappeared. the man is now serving time in a peruvian jail for the murder of another woman. her parents were the victims of a botched investigation from the start by aruban authorities. >> little did they know, they were up against the whole aruban government. there's never closure when your loved one is murdered, okay? i know that. but at least they would know that they have her remains and she could be buried. >> reporter: natalee's father says he won't give up on finding the truth and getting justice for his daughter. so what is it that you're hoping to get out of revisiting it? >> well, it's my daughter, and we want to find out what happened. it's like this. are you going to sit on your wallet and stay home and worry yourself sick? with medical bills and chest pains and not sleeping at night, or are you going to get up and

this morning on "world news now." president trump taking aim at a familiar foe during his campaign rally, the media, by repeating select phrases and leaving the controversial ones out. and overnight, the clashes on the streets of downtown phoenix, as we go live there next. also breaking overnight, the navy announces high-level staffing changes in the wake of the latest deadly crash at sea. we have the latest. and new this half hour, social justice in sports. >> with a rally set for colin kaepernick, more and more are protesting against racial inequality. including the league's first white player to join the movement. hear why he's taking a knee. and are the chain-smokers looking into a career change? they were spotted doing something we've never seen them do before?

what does this mean for their big tour? we'll have the answers coming up in "the skinny." it is wednesday, august 23rd. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> the best description i've ever heard for the chain-smokers, from our producer who calls them the edm boy band. possible career change? but we're going to start with breaking news in phoenix, a massive protest against president trump turning violent. >> police used pepper spray to disburse the thousands of demonstrators, some which gathered earlier. they had been noisy and peaceful when the president spoke, but after the rally let out, they started throwing rocks and bottles at police. abc's tom llamas was there. >> reporter: the president spoke tonight in phoenix, and just behind me, you can see some of

the demonstrators that are left over. but earlier tonight there were thousands of demonstrators out here, and they had pretty much surrounded the convention center where the president was speaking. the police had a very good plan in place. they were able to separate the protesters from the trump supporters. right at the end, the trump supporters were coming out and demonstrators were able to get in their faces. there were some screaming matches, but we didn't witness any violence.nd, as police were trying to force everyone out, they did use tear gas. the police had gas masks and shields and they pretty much marched the rest of the demonstrators out of downtown phoenix. >> our thanks to tom llamas there. >> a busy night overnight there. there were no reports of injuries and only three arrests. inside the phoenix convention center, the president spoke for nearly 90 minutes. >> he started by going after the media. the president read excerpts of his statements about white supremacists. >> and he said the press had twisted what he said.

>> because they said everything. i hit them with neo-nazi. i hit them with everything. i got the white supremacists, the neo-nazi. i got them all in there. let's see. kkk, we have kkk. i got them all. so they're having a hard time. so what do they say, right? it should have been sooner! he's a racist. it should have been sooner. okay. so it should have been, so then the last one. on tuesday, tuesday i did another one. we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence. it has no place in america. >> but here's the deal. the president did not mention the comments that he's been most criticized for, saying there was blame on many sides. >> abc's danya bacchus is live in phoenix. this is a very different speech compared to what we heard about afghanistan just 24 hours before.

how much of this speech was about charlottesville and the media coverage? >> reporter: you know, it seemed like the president spent at least the first 20 to 30 minutes talking about media coverage, also defending the way he handled and his response to charlottesville, maintaining that he condemned what happened there multiple times. you guys just heard it in that spot that we played, that he basically said that he reread that initial response a couple times. he spent a good time blaming us, the media, saying it was the way we reported it that made it seem like he didn't handle it correctly. he called out cnn, abc and the "new york times" by name. and as you guys mentioned, he did not mention the fellow republicans who also criticized him. >> yeah, in fact at one point, the crowd started chanting "cnn sucks." the president referring to george stephanopoulos as "little george stephanopoulos." during that speech. that was interesting. he also hinted at a possible

pardon for joe arpaio. listen. >> do the people in this room like sheriff joe? [cheers and applause] was sheriff joe convicted for doing his job? [cheers and applause] he should have had a jury, but, you know what? i'll make a prediction. i think he's going to be just fine, okay? [cheers and applause] >> that seemed to go over well, danya. >> reporter: it definitely went over well, and that's not surprising, because you had a convention center full of trump supporters. and arpaio is definitely a trump supporter. he's one of those people. he has pushed for tougher immigration. so has president trump, so it's not surprising that the people

there would also be a supporter of the former sheriff. now what i find most interesting about this is that earlier in the day the white house press secretary basically said there would be no discussion of a pardon and then president trump comes on stage and hints at that pardon. >> that seems to be a common theme. we hear that the white house aides aren't planning on having a press conference, then he gives a surprise press conference. then he's going to not mention a pardon and then he does mention a pardon. how do you account for all that? it seems like he likes to be unpredictable? >> reporter: yeah. and that's what we, you said it was very different from what we saw just the night before, that was very true. the night before, he was very scripted. it seemed like he stayed on track. he had a particular message that he wanted to get out and he stuck with that. but tonight it went from the media, it went from the pardon, it went from defending charlottesville. it seemed to touch on a lot of different points that did not gel together. many different points that took him all across the board. >> yes, it was.

all right, our danya bacchus in phoenix. also breaking overnight, the navy announcing a move. after tlatest deadly collision t sea. the commander of the seventh fleet is being relieved of duty. >> vice admiral joseph aucoin is out because of a loss of confidence involving four crashes this year. he was set to retire next month. the most recent involved the "uss john s. mccain." colliding with an oil tanker near singapore. divers searching its flooded compartments have found remains of some of the ten sailors who are missing. and secretary of state rex tillerson says the u.s. needs to be as cagey and tactical as the taliban when it comes to strategy in afghanistan. speaking at the state department he followed the president's lead and didn't say how many more troops would be heading into the fight. tillerson did say the new afghanistan policy is intended to put pressure on the taliban and find a way to end the war with a negotiated settlement. and we're learning new details about the barcelona terror plot.

the four surviving members of that allege the terror cell appeared in court for the first time on tuesday. they were going to detonate bombs, including at the cathedral. but they were allegedly forced to change plans when the house they were making the bombs in accidently blew up. they decided to use a van to attack tourists. killing 13 people. the judge released one of the suspects, saying the evidence against him was not strong enough. and we're seeing dramatic images of children rescued after an earthquake in italy. authorities say the three young brothers were trapped after their home collapsed. the 11-year-old, the oldest, is being credited with saving his siblings. he pushed one under the bed and banged a broom handle on the roof. two people died on that resort island in italy. colin kaepernick supporters will stand up for him in front of the nfl headquarters today. the quarterback has been black balled for kneeling during the

national anthem. last season to protest racial injustice. more players are showing support for kaepernick. monday night at least a dozen cleveland browns knelt during the anthem. among them, seth devalve, the first white player to take a knee in protest. devalve's wife is black. >> i myself will be raising children that don't look like me. and i want to do my part as well, to do everything i can to raise them in a better environment than we have right now. >> referring to the scene overnight. in the meantime, kyrie irving has gotten his wish. the four-time nba all-star is no longer lebron james' sidekick. he is heading to boston in a four-player trade. the big name going to cleveland is two-time all-star isaiah
