whether to issue a permit for the event field. thanks for joining us. as the organizer pushes forward and city leaders encourage a counterprotest, police officers are preparing for anything in the wake of violence in charlottesville, virginia. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live with the latest, amy. >> reporter: kristen, all san francisco police officers will be working on saturday. i just talked to a spokesperson and asked is this because they're responding to intelligence they have that something's going to happen on saturday? they said no, they're being proactive. as protesters head to the field on saturday, so will san francisco police, many of them. >> so the department has cancelled days off for available -- so that we can have all available officers ready to respond and keep the city safe. >> reporter: the mayor hopes there will be more police than protesters. he's calling for san franciscans to skip the demonstration

altogether and instead attend a counterrally on friday. >> maybe we ought to consider not dignifying going to chrissy field. >> reporter: we tested this idea out on the street. >> i think people should go. yeah, i think people should go and voice their opinion, you know. >> i say just ignore the whole thin and don't even dignify it. >> reporter: the organizer is gearing up for saturday. he posted on his facebook page, good news, police have a robust plan to ship rally attendees from a parking lotle to chrissy field and back. we asked police this morning about that claim. >> we don't speak to operational plans. again, we -- i can't speak to that. i don't know about that information, and we're just planning for demonstrations. >> reporter: you can tell the national park service is busy, i called several times, several numbers this morning. they all go straight to voice mail and the voice mailboxes are full.

i just tried texting and got a response from a spokesperson, he just wrote, no news yet. at this point, the national park service hasn't even confirmed whether they have approved the permit for saturday's rally. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. and in berkeley, city leaders are pleading with people to stay away from a rally billed as anti-marxist. they're worried tensions are running so high there could be violence like the kind that's broken out at two previous protests in the city. the organizer of saturday's rally says she supports president trump, but opposes racism, hate, and violence. the community is planning a rally against hate on the uc berkeley campus. we're learning details about a woman found dead of byron. contra costa county deputies found her body yesterday afternoon. tell us the victim was believed to be a san francisco resident.

they're not releasing her name, how she was killed, or a possible motive. an autopsy is scheduled for later this morning. and this morning, the lake county sheriff's office is mourning the loss of one of their own. deputy robert rumfeld died after his patrol car crashed into a tree on heartily road in lake port. investigators have not determined what caused rumsfeld's death but think he suffered a medical emergency. asar atyunco. mentor on the force and was a firearm's instructor. he also served as an assistant football coach at clear lake high school. deputy rumsfeld leaves behind a wife and two daughters. palo alto firefighter is recovering after battling grass fire. it burned near the dish, that's a popular hiking trail near stanford university. the deputy fire chief says it broke out in a restricted area shortly after 10:00 last night. >> someone saw a fire from 280 and notified the sheriffs. it's approximately three to five

acres. we were able to knock it down fairly quickly. >> the dish is gated and closes at sun down. investigators are trying to figure out if someone climbed the fence and how the fire started. the injured firefighter has been released from the hospital. uc berkeley professor has resigned as a science envoy in president trump's administration. daniel hammond tweeted his resignation letter this morning. he says he's stepping down because of mr. trump's response to the violent clashes in charlottesville. but is there more to his note? one twitter user notes, there is a message hidden in the resignation letter. here it is. each paragraph starts with the letter where you put them together spells the word, impeach. no word if this was intentional or coincidence. this morning, president trump is speaking and focussing on veterans. right knew let's take a live picture from reno, nevada, he is at the podium speaking to the american legion national convention. today's remarks comes less than

24 hours after violence erupted outside a campaign rally in arizona. last night, violence erupted at another rally in arizona. here's abc's lana zach. >> reporter: in an angry defensive screen, president trump tried to shift the blame for charlottesville. >> i hit them with everything. i got the white supremacists, the neo-nazi, i got them all in there, let's see, kkk, we have kkk. i got them all. >> reporter: nearly half an hour of his 75 minute speech. >> they're bad people. and i really think they don't like our country. >> reporter: the president said the media was really to blame. >> if you want to discover the source of the division in our country, look no further than the fake news and the crooked media. >> reporter: and he said his words were quote, perfect. >> to tell the truth, i'm an honest person. and what i'm saying, you know is exactly right. >> reporter: as the president reread his statements, he left out his two more controversial

quantify luck. more than 5,000 places across the state and many in the bay area are given the title of lucky retailer. we found several in south san jose including gas and go on block and mill road across the street from another lucky retailer, the 7-eleven. mike's liquor has the official title. the sign brags more than $561,000 was won there last year. ironically, lucky supermarket on blossom hill road is not a lucky retailer. >> my boyfriend works for lucky. so hopefully maybe it'll be the good luck charm. >> reporter: what exactly makes a business a lucky retailer? they must do at least one of these in a calendar year to take on that title. sold at least one winning ticket worth $100,000. paid an average of 400 or more winning tickets per week. paid out $4,000 more worth of winning tickets. some people have their doubts. >> i think it's luck of the draw. luck of the draw. >> you can win anywhere. >> exactly. >> you can lose anywhere too

and i'm an arborist with i'pg&e in the sierras. the drought in california has killed trees on a massive scale. any of those trees that fail into power lines could cause a wildfire or a power outage. public safety is the main goal of our program. that's why we're out removing these hundreds of thousands of hazard trees. having tools and technology gives us a huge edge to identify hazard trees. my hope is that the work we're performing allows that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future. together, we're building a better california.
