this comes after weeks of preparation including fencing and concrete barriers that went up today. the group plans to go to sunday's rally in berkeley. >> berkeley is a better situation. we don't feel like we're walking into a trap. it's wide open. it's an open field. it's a better situation. >> organizers say the berkeley event is still on. this just got a lot more complicated in berkeley. >> reporter: it has. we just did a skype interview with the organizer of the event on sunday. he did not know the crissy field event was cancelled until we told him.

just yet. in the meantime i heard from the mayor's office here in berkeley. we were trying to get reaction to the fact the crissy field event was cancelled. this is the statement i received. mayor is very busy with other issues facing the city, including housing and so he's not able to comment today. laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> thank you. that rally against marxism is scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on sunday. counter protest was held in san francisco with city leaders

holding rally to celebrate the compassion, love and inclusiveness. >> reporter: you can see they are starting to break down the set up over my shoulder. at times this rally felt party like. it was music and cheers. everybody from the mayor to artists, mc hammer driving the message home san francisco is a city of love. >> to those who seek to undermine our spirit who wave the banners of racism and homophobia who thinks the first amendment protects their violence, you are not welcome in san francisco. >> reporter: a precursor to the rally that was supposed to happen at crissy field. >> they have a message we don't believe in. a message of hate and we've seen across this country how that

message can easily translate into violence. >> reporter: it's the threat of that violence that had some here saying they'd stay away. >> i don't think it's productive to have video footage of leftists clashing with the people on the right. >> reporter: caitlin says she'll be back in front of city hall with her son bringing attention to what she calls every day white supremacy. >> my sign says white liberals wake up and white supremacy is more than hoods and torches. >> i think it's right to tell people to not bring weapons and that the security checks are fine. to stop people from coming is not the solution. >> we are yunited against hate. >> reporter: mc hammer caught a red eye from texas to help drive that message home. >> because hatred has no place here in san francisco. >> reporter: lifting the crowd can these lyrics.

they may be breaking down the set up but we expect to see a similar one as there's another rally that's planned here tomorrow outside of city hall at noon. >> thank you. again the people behind tomorrow's patriot prayer rally have cancelled their ae vent and scheduled a news conference at 2:00 p.m. enable push alerts to get the latest news as it happens. it will be next month to know what a task force is recommending about the controversial urban shield training exercise. >> the training is valuable but critics say it's harmful to people of culture.

>> reporter: that's one ofrts biggest gripes they have with the annual training exercise. >> we see the harm and danger. >> reporter: urban shield is funded by a $5 million grant by the department of homeland security. swat teams from the bay area across the country and around the world take part. >> we need to have this for community safety. >> reporter: he's a member of the 19 person task force put together to recommend whether the county should keep urban shield, change it to address community concerns or drop it all together. the federal funding requires that the training be related to counter terrorism. >> there's no doubt in my mind we're better prepared to respond to any type of major mass casualty event here in the bay area and elsewhere as a result of that collaboration that takes place during urban shields

exercises. >> reporter: they will drop a vendor because of what were called racist images of muslims on its website. the task force was supposed to vote today but ran out of time. another meeting is set for september 22nd. the board seems to be leaning toward making changes in urban shields instead of dropping it. >> this year's urban shield event will be held the weekend of september 8th. it's going be really hot weekend especially inland. get ready for another spare the air alert. >> abc 7 news meteorologist is in for spenscer with a look at the forecast. >> the fog has been stubborn at the coast not burning off like we expected. it is shallower, about a,0 thousands feet. it will allow the temperatures to come up.

thought it was a medical event and into the next day, we were able to determine that it was a homicide. >> hunter was serving time on suspicion of vandalism at the uc berkeley campus. family members say he's mentally ill. investigators have not released a possible motive for that killing. a car was left mangled after a violent crash in san jose. the dodge plowed into some trees on north bascom and mcdaniel avenue at 2:30 this morning. the driver walked away from a complete wreck right there. a warning for those in the path of hurricane harvey. >> think of your life first. the most important thing we're dealing with right now is human life. >> the winds are picking up and people are moving out as the storm closes in on texas. it's the corridor we use north and south. we need this. >> big celebration in the north

inland areas are seeing clear skies. as you check out the 24 hour temperature change up 12 degrees in livermore but places like san francisco down one degree. here is a live look from our camera from pier 15. you can see blue skies over the bay. temperatures in the 60s from san francisco to oakland. it's 82 in san jose. 93 in gilroy. the fog has just been sitting over the golden gate bridge for hours now. we're already feeling the heat inland. you're seeing san francisco looking good now. temperatures soar inland. it is spare the air alert. the heat continues into next week. tomorrow morning temperatures will start out in the low 50s.

yes, fog will be limited to just the coast and few parts near the bay. as you look at the hour by hour forecast the fog pushes locally inland. 8:00 a.m. it will be there and it pulls away from the coast. tomorrow afternoon, earlier burn off. the temperatures will come up. coast and bay you'll be warmer. inland areas, you'll get hotter. your highs for your saturday up to 102 in antioch. sunday the temperatures come up even more. air quality be will the worst in the inland east bay. that's why a spare the air alert has been issued for tomorrow. once again we'll see it for sunday. check out the accuweather seven-day forecast. you see hot, hot, hot right on through monday. numbers will come up, 106 degrees inland. 70s on the coast. temperatures do come down a bit to start off the workweek. you really have to wait until the middle of the workweek to see the temperatures moderating and it gets hot toward the end of the workweek heading into the

here are stories making headline as we come up on 4:30. organizers of the patriot prayer group went on facebook to announce they are cancelling tomorrow's planned rally in san francisco because of safety concerns. they plan to hold a news conference to explain that decision tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at alamo square park in the city. the announcement comes hours after large crowd gathered a san francisco city hall this afternoon for peaceful rally

compared to what experts say coastal residents of texas, mississippi and louisiana will experience after hurricane harvey hits later tonight. >> think of your life first. the most important thing we're thinking of is human life. >> reporter: among the concerns massive flootding. three feet of rain in some areas, storm surges projected to reach up to 12 feet. with all that flooding wide spread power outages. >> this storm is not going to play out overnight. when the power goes off you can expect it to be off three to seven days. >> reporter: voluntary and mandatory evacuations are in effect. the message heard over and over again. >> they're not going to come rescue. >> reporter: they tell drivers to prepare. >> absolute insanity over this hurricane. >> reporter: in corpus christi all the tiniest residents have been relocated. houston's big concern is really

flooding with all of this concrete and that massive amount of rain that's projected. also to give you a little bit of perspective. this is supposed to be a category 3 hurricane. the last time that happened was in 2005. those hurricanes were named wilma and katrina. a crew aboard the intertertr international space station getting a good view. you can see the defined eye of the storm right there. >> that's just incredible. time to check in with abc 7 news meteorologist with a look at what's happening now. >> it's intensified. as you take a look the eye is so visible nearing corpus christi at this hour. when you look at how wide the storm is, it's over 500 miles wide. this is a very large storm. our radar is tracking the outer

bands of rain already moving on shore. the biggest threat is the storm surge. also not only damaging winds but soaking rains for days. it's now a category 4 with 130 miles an hour moving to the northwest at 8. expected to make landfall shortly. by saturday a one. it didn't move much. it just meanders over texas. when you look at the rainfall projections, this is going to be catastrophic. up to 40 inches in isolated areas by wednesday evening. this will be one for the record books. >> thank you. as hurricane harvey roars toward texas, airport officials are warning passengers there could

his demand congress pay for his wall on the boarder with mexico. president trump is planning to shut down the government if payment for the wall is not included in the next budget. lawmakers on both sides of the isle have indicated getting support for raising the debt ceiling and funding the wall is challenge, at most impossible. snl's weekend update calling out the president for his new hard line on congress. >> what to we want? >> the wall. >> who's going to pay for it? >> mexico. >> that's right you are the american taxpayer. >> reporter: trump's demand comes as he continues to publicly attack top republican lawmakers. most recently bob corker who criticized the president for displaying a lack of stability and competence after the events in charlottesville.

a long list of lawmakers have been targets. >> the end game is for congress to do its job and pass legislation. i think the american people are very frustrated with congress's lack of action. >> reporter: the fiscal year ends september 30th but a budget deadline could be pushed back by a stopgap measure. that could delay things until closer to the holidays. at this point neither side looks like it will back down. abc news, washington. >> it's summer meeting the republican national committee passed a resolution condemning white supremacists but not all party members agreed. analysts say the grumbling reflects a difference between veterans concerned about the party's image and more ardent pro-trump members. president trump came under fire for his response to the violence in charlottesville two week ago. the trump administration is opposed a new sanction on venezuela. a new order pose a number of financial loopholes that venezuela has been using to sell

an evacuation order is in place for a town in swits switss a river of mud is flowing through the area. eight people remain missing. now to a story of survival. two teens got lost in the grand canyon for days with only two g granola bars to eat. >> they are sharing their story. >> reporter: two teen ons a cross country road trip to start college getting a five day crash course this survival after they

turned off a trail during what was supposed to be a day long hike in the grand canyon and got lost. >> i don't think i could have done it with anyone else other than rowen. >> reporter: stranded in 100-degree heat with no cell phone signal to call for help, running out of water on the first day. surviving by drinking from puddles and rationing the one granola bar each. >> every day we would eat a piece about that big. >> reporter: the 18-year-old hiding out in the shade but making sure if rescuers came for them they would know where to look. >> we made a big sign with rocks at the base of the trail that pointed to where we were. >> reporter: it worked. on the fifth day a helicopter flew past and the stranded best friends were spotted. >> i had this big life guard whistle. i started blowing. we're like waving branches at it. >> reporter: rescuers bringing them to safety. the teens dehydrated but otherwise okay. >> we both felt like a tremendous sense o relief.

the fighting days are over for one san francisco boxer. he's fighting to help keep kids off the street. a man created a safe haven where discipline and respect meets all of life punches. >> reporter: step into the boxing club and you'll find punch bags, shadow boxing, jump ropes and most importantly smiling kids. >> it's very fun here. best two hours of my life. >> reporter: retired boxer jimmy

ford opened his first gym in 2003 before expanding to this location a few years later. >> jimmy's cool. he's fun. we have a lot of fun here. he's like a brother to me. like a big brother. >> reporter: that big brother, ford, leans on his own experiences. he grew up in a tough neighborhood and started boxing when he was ten years old. every time he left the gym he got into trouble. so he trained harder. he went onto fight in the junior olympics and the golden gloves. today he's man of faith certain he's here to help keep at risk kids on the right path. >> it's riceless. >> reporter: he's humble and a little camera shy but parents and volunteers alike say it's ford's dead indication that makes this lace place so specia. she's been to dozens of gyms but none like fire in the ring. >> it has the most unique feel

of any boxing gym you go into. it's love and respect. when the kids come in everybody says high to everybody. >> reporter: people of all ages train at the club but kids 7 to 17 can come for free monday through friday 4:30 to 6:30. they work on physical fitness, boxing technique and along the way learn life lessons. >> only fight in the ring. don't fight outside. that's a big one. just like respect. >> reporter: ford leads by example and that's one of the things that keep heavyweight mitchell so inspired. >> he's always in the back of your head. when i don't go for my hundred, i hear jimmy. he just looksi, they though and put their head down. >> reporter: he doesn't want to take credit. it's a we thing. >> we're all family. we all put in what we need to put in. >> reporter: much of the
