san francisco was ready for whatever came today. >> i am proud how we communicated and how we responded to the will of the people to get out and express themselves but do so peacefully. >> reporter: counterprotesters chanted in the organizer didn't show up. this after cancelling the crissy field rally too. >> i am here to say i am a queer white woman who is not going to take their crap. >> reporter: there was one arrest and police had to push the crowd back. one person was detained. while one group disbursed, another grew. hundreds marched and arrived at

civic center plaza. >> we wanted to show up but show up in a place that would be safe for our family. >> reporter: children played and families gathered for a message. >> if people want to have a stage in san franciso, they better have a message that contributed to peoples' lives rather than find ways to hurt them. >> reporter: police will keep an eye on alamo square tonight. >> protesters peacefully marched through the mission district. they staged a die-in after completely blocking the intersection. the group also burned a pinnata that looked like donald

the patriot party group leader called off the rally. but he did meet with supporters. >> reporter: the leader came here unannounced and a couple of hours later than the rally was originally scheduled to arrive. police say no one was arrested here at crissy field. >> you know, i -- >> reporter: today did not turn out the way joey gibson planned. >> i am just a rookie. i am learning and growing. >> reporter: chapman was charged with a felony for fighting at right-wing rallies. te two men explained why the rally was canceled. >> they set it up to where it would be the highest chance of
