. live, where you live. this is abc 7 news. >> today is sunday, august 27th. good morning, and thanks so much for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen in for carolyn tiler. let's start with the forecast. here is lisa tracking live doppler 7. >> good morning to you. hi, everyone. boy, it is even mild this morning. was it hot enough for you yesterday? as we look at live doppler 7 now, you'll notice there is a little bit of fog along the san mateo coast. only relief at the shoreline. so once again, a spare the air alert. our inland east bay and santa clara valley, poor air quality. current temperatures look like this. low to mid 60s in our inland east bay. at 54 at half moon bay. 65 in mountain view, and that puts us anywhere from about 3 to 17 degrees warmer out by

brentwood. numbers still well into the 70s. so your forecast today calls for temperatures to be in and around 70 degrees for most of you. in the immediate bay area. except at the coast, as we go through the morning. and then by midday, we're in the 90s. even hotter today, up to 106. and we are looking at still a very hot day tomorrow. so heat tips for today carry over from yesterday, which include taking frequent breaks, exercise before 10:00, and inside the car, you know temperatures can get much, much hotter, much quicker. be sure to check on the seniors and pets. this is going to last right through tomorrow. chris? >> lisa, thank you. this morning, san francisco police are calling the city safe after officers helped prevent two right wing protests from happening. the focus now moves to berkeley, where an anti marxist rally is planned this afternoon. but yesterday groups in san francisco promoting an anti hate message turned out in full force. abc 7 news has a has a has a haa

protests. >> reporter: the fencing and barricades went up and heavily armed police were on the streets and rooftops. san francisco was ready. >> i'm very proud of how we have communicated and how we responded to the will of the people to get out and express themselves, but do so peacefully. >> we're here because the racists aren't. >> reporter: earlier, counter protesters chanted in unison as word spread that the right wing organizer of the patriot prayer rally didn't show up. at alamo square for a scheduled event, this after cancelling the field rally, too. >> i'm not here to fight them. i just want them to see that i am a queer white woman who is not here to take their crap. >> reporter: but not everyone had the same plan. some were ready for a confrontation. at alamo square, there was one arrest and police had to push the crowd back. one person was detained after jumping a barricade, while one group dispersed. another group.

hundreds marched and eventually arrived at civic center plaza, joining a second group for the peace, love and understanding rally. >> we wanted to show up, but also show up in a place that would be safe for our family. >> reporter: children played and families gathered for the shared message, which the mayor supported while continuing to denounce the patriot prayer rally. >> if people want to have a stage in san francisco, they had better have a message that contributes to people's lives rather than find ways to hurt them. >> reporter: in san francisco, abc 7 news. protesters marched through san francisco's mission district yesterday. sky 7 was over the crowd as they staged a die-in at 21st and mission. after briefly blocking the intersection, they continued through the neighborhood. a group also burned a pinata that was designed to look like president trump. 5:03 is the time. the counter protesters were in the odd position of demonstrating against something that didn't happen. that's because the leader of

patriot prayer called off the official rally, but he did show up and meet with his supporters. as abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson tells us, saturday did not turn out the way that joey gibson had planned. >> i'm just a rookie. i don't really know what i'm doing. i'm working, trying to learn and grow. >> reporter: the leader of patriot prayer started the day with far right activist, kyle chapman. chapman was charged with a felony for fighting at right wing rallies. he posted a $135,000 bail through facebook live. the two men explained why the rally was cancelled. >> they set the rally up on crissy field to where there would be the highest chance of violent interaction between our people and the counter protesters. >> reporter: security concerns also caused gibson to cancel the backup rally at alamo square. then he held a news conference in pacifica. he blamed the media and politicians for misrepresenting the patriot prayer movement. >> to call us white supremacists made san francisco way more

dangerous than it could have. you have a mayor who says we're hateful and violent, doesn't bring up any specific examples. >> reporter: two hours later, gibson arrived at crissy field, where several prayer supporters were waiting. he left as tensioned mounted between a few members of the crowd and counter protesters. a strong police presence, including officers in riot gear helped maintain control. gibson says he's still undecided about his plans for berkeley. >> we've got to take care of each other. we don't want people to die. >> reporter: in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. again, berkeley is preparing for an anti marxist rally scheduled for today. even though the organizer is asking people not to attend. abc 7 news was in civic center park as workers set up barricades. the rally's organizer urged people to stay away, fearing violent confrontations. a counter protest is scheduled at the park later today. people gathered there yesterday, calling for peace. ♪

>> leaders led people in songs and prayers. they hope their message helps reduce potential tensions. as a massive crowd of protesters gathered at san francisco city hall, abc 7 news let people know immediately with the push alert from the abc 7 news app. we also had live video. download the app for free and able push alerts for instant news updates. time now is 5:06. the piedmont city council will hold a special meeting tomorrow to remove its mayor from his position. mayor jeff wyler has come under fire in the past week for comments and posts on facebook. a member of the piedmont community claims he posted facebook statements, such as black lives matter encourages cop-killing, and transgenders are mentally ill. the east bay times who reported the story could not verify those statements. council members add that the city has been swamped with calls, expressing outrage over

wyler's alleged comments. developing news from texas, where tropical storm harvey sits above the southeast coast, cities and towns are drenched and we know at least two people have died. abc's natasha barrett joins us live from houston with the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, chris, good morning. i've got to tell you, i'm from houston, born and raised. i've never seen it like this. it's that bad. not exaggerating. i know you see a lot of people standing out in pouring rains and talking about how bad it is. but this is something the city of houston has never seen before. worse than hurricane ike, tropical storm allison. everything literally is under water. more than 1,000 people have been rescued in the last couple of hours by the houston police department. and the police department now telling people, don't go up to your attic. many people have been rushing up to their attics to get away from the floodwaters. they're now saying go to your roofs and wait there until first responders can get there. but here's the thing. the first responders can't get

out, because so many highways, practically every highway, interstate, feeder roads on the side, all flooded. so the first responders can't get to the people that need it. of those 1,000 people rescued, several pregnant women had to wade in waist-deep water to get to firefighters, putting their lives at risk. both the rescuers and the people to get to safety. and the places that used to be shelters in the past, they're flooded. there's just so many problems, as daylight approaches us here in houston, chris. >> and natasha, you mentioned that you are a houston native. talk to us a little bit about by wo of t your neighbors. i know you mentioned some of the rescue efforts there. but this just sounds awful. >> reporter: it is awful. in my neighborhood, there was a tornado yesterday -- actually, two tornadoes ripped through there. 55 of my neighbors don't have

roofs. they're clamoring to put tarps over their homes so there wouldn't be more damage. i haven't been able to check on my home, but i do know it has a roof. my neighbors told me that. and i also have a 4-month-old baby i haven't been able to see in 48 hours. he's at my mom's house. there's a tornado there. they hunkered down inside a closet, lost power, were inside that closet for about three hours. i'm just thankful for facetime. because i can see them and see they're okay. but it's been so hard on all of us to see what's happening and not be able to go to each other. >> social media and technology certainly playing a role in telling this story and keeping people safe. natasha barrett from our abc sister station in houston, thank you so much for that live report. we'll continue monitoring your social media feed for the latest updates. time now is 5:09. we're tracking the bay area forecast. >> and we have our own issues with the weather. in fact, heat-related issues that will come into play today. 65 degrees in concord.

good morning, everyone. time is 5:12. thanks for starting your day with abc 7 news. we look at the bay bridge and embarcadero from our abc 7 roof camera. calm in terms of the winds. we'll get our forecast from our meteorologist coming up. hundreds of people celebrated the opening of a

unity center in sacramento. the 4,000 square foot center is located at the california museum, dedicated to the state's diverse group of people, customs and culture. it encourages visitors to take an interactive stance on hate and intolerance. the mayor says he got involved early on in response to a wave of hate crimes in the area back in 1999. >> we wanted a center, a unity center, where the tens of thousands of kids who come to the capital every year from around the state could walk across the street and have an experience that would affect their hearts and minds. >> the mayor also says the timing of the center's opening couldn't be better because of what's going on around the country. the center plans to host several discussions about civil rights. 5:13 is our time now. to hurricane harvey. firefighters and paramedics from the bay area are headed for texas to lend a hand in the wake of harvey, which has left dozens missing. alyssa harrington has the story.

>> reporter: these firefighters from agencies all over the bay area are packing up. and heading out on a 30-hour drive to texas. the 70-person task force activated by fema, will provide support in the disaster zone of hurricane harvey. >> i suspect we will be doing some search and rescue operations in water-inundated areas. we'll also be providing mass health care. >> reporter: at a warehouse in oakland, they pack up food, medical supplies and life-saving equipment like saws and rope. task force 4 helped out in other disasters like 9/11 and hurricane katrina. one of the most important tools, canines. >> we'll locate trapped victims, live victims, and any of the destruction. >> reporter: this is the first time 11-year-old keeno will be deployed. >> they're priceless. they can search an area much faster and more efficiently than any human or any scientific tool. >> reporter: firefighters could be in the hurricane zone for weeks. this is where they'll stay. they're bringing dozens of these

shelters. this is where rescue teams will sleep. they're used as medical clinics and office space. the task force includes firefighters, doctors, paramedics and engineers to check for stability of damaged structures. alyssa harrington, abc 7 news. the border patrol has found a new illegal tunnel that was used to smuggle people from mexico into the u.s. the tunnel was found here the crossing east of san diego. border patrol agents discovered the tunnel after they encountered 23 chinese nationals and 7 mexican nationals that had entered the country by using the passageway. it's now been shut down. authorities believe it was a branch of another tunnel that was discovered recently by the mexican government. an amtrak train hit and killed the driver of a pickup truck in rodeo. the collision happened yesterday at the railroad crossing at san pablo avenue and california

street. a sacramento-bound capital corridor train hit the truck, which was stopped on the tracks. railroad police are investigating why the driver stopped. peninsula congresswoman jackie spear made a call for peace and unity during a field trip with some very important constituents. spear took more than 100 school children to the rosie the riveter memorial in richmond to commemorate women's kwaequality day. she spoke with the deep divisions throughout the country. >> this is a time for engagement. that's what you're seeing throughout the bay area. and love will win out. >> at the trip to the memorial, spear marked the end of the women's suffrage in the u.s. and said more work needs to be done to end the wage gap between women and men in the workplace. time now is 5:16. in walnut creek, a crowd gathered at civic park to form the words "end hate" in response to the events in charlottesville. take a look at this aerial view

here. the crowd wanted to fight divisiveness and speak out against hatred. several hundred people took part in the event. two kids in san francisco are cooking up peace and understanding while raising money for charity. abc 7 news was in the hate district where they have signs saying, "make lemonade, not war." and "don't hate, hydrate." the money will support the southern poverty law center, a nonprofit organization that specializes in several rights. >> my kids are really involved with me when we march and do things like that. i wanted to do something a little different, given the security concerns today. >> their mother said they raised more than $800. happening today, hayward is having a party, and big mike is throwing it. if you're from the east bay, you might recognize mike. he's well over 20 feet tall, and today is turning 50. mike was popular long ago as one of the many urban roadside attractions. he stood vigil outside a car wash and tire shop on mission

boulevard in hayward for decades. just a couple blocks away from the doggy diner. big mike's big birthday bash is from 10:00 to 5:00 near the hayward airport. everyone is welcome for cake and a factory tour. in the north bay, high temperatures expected today have prompted officials to open a cooling center in santa rosa. the center will be open from 11:00 this morning until 6:00 tonight at the finley community center on west college avenue. officials say water will be available, and people can bring in food ready to eat as the kitchen will not be accessible. there will also be free wi-fi, but no television. the only animals allowed inside are service animals. now, your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> certainly needed. it was 102 yesterday in santa rosa and 105 in livermore. you will notice fog here from the san mateo coast.

the bay area will not be cooled by the low clouds and fog just immediately at the coast. and here is a look at tropical storm harvey, where it continues to just pummel houston are rain rates anywhere from 3 to 4 inches an hour. so if we go in closer, you'll notice the purples and reds here showing where the heavier rain is on the east side of houston. so this continues to be a major factor, not only today and tomorrow, but this forecast model takes us through thursday. and you notice locally over 2 and over 3 feet and some estimates are over 60 inches of rain by friday. so you can see how it fans out into louisiana and mississippi. so still really a life-threatening and probably historic proportions of how some of these cities are just going to have to rebuild anywhere from rockport to victoria, the worst hit, as the center moved over that small town of victoria. a live look outside right now in

san francisco. where's the fog? well, not here. 65 in mountain view. a very shallow layer right off the coast. it's 66 in san jose. gilroy at 58. and we are looking at temperatures much milder inland. boy, it warmed up quickly yesterday, didn't it? today about the same. looking at 59, santa rosa. 57, novato. mid 60s concord and livermore. and from santa cruz, a nice beach day today but temperatures baking inland. we're looking for the heat to continue into next week. a bit of a reprieve by the middle of the week and then things really begin to warm up again. so the fog comes into play 2:00 in the north bay and that's going to take until 9:00 where it sets up along the coast. and it won't go away all together, so that's why the coast will be comfortable, but you have to be right at the shoreline, right at our bay area beaches. and today even a little bit warmer than yesterday. so here is our heat advisory. highlighted in orange here. pretty much all the cities around the bay, excessive heat warning where temperatures could climb above 105 to 108.

you felt that yesterday in the south bay, even hotter today. 95 san jose. 99 in morgan hill. milpitas checking in at 91. 88, redwood city. 90 in mountain view. downtown, 75 today, and looking at temperatures in the north bay, wow, once again those reds coming into play, baking the area over 100 degrees in santa rosa. clover dale, 102. san leandro, 90. 82 in berkeley. that's warm. over the east bay hills through the caldecott tunnel and those pinks making it just almost unbearable. hopeful hopefully if the air conditioning or pool or you can get out of some areas that experience 103 in pleasanton, 106 in san ramon. monday will be almost as hot, and as we go through tuesday and wednesday, slightly cooler by the middle of the week. that's the coolest day. and then chris, look what happens as we enter into september. even the coast gets warmer in the low 70s.

welcome back. the state department is in charge of keeping our nation secure. but a woman on the peninsula says it couldn't keep her personal documents safe. so she and her husband went to 7 on your side's michael finney. >> this is the cell where john mccain was. >> reporter: it was a memorable trip for ira and jane burke of san mateo. not only for the exotic sights of southeast asia, but for the

calamity that almost stopped them from going at all. >> it's a sad commentary. >> reporter: the trouble began when jane and ira applied for a visa, mailing their passports to a visa agency in washington. it didn't go smoothly. >> they were mailing us back the passports. well, we never got the passports. >> reporter: no one could find the passport, so they had to apply for new ones, quickly. they mailed multiple documents to washington. >> my social security, my driver's license. >> reporter: but after they shipped them off, they heard from the visa agency. >> they call us to say they found the passports. >> reporter: so now they didn't need those new passports. however, troubles didn't end there. the state department could not find jane's documents. >> i'm missing my original marriage license, my original birth certificate. >> they checked all the desks, and the paperwork is not there. >> then i'm thinking, who has my documents? because i have everything. from where i was born, my mother's maiden name. >> reporter: she says at first the state department insisted

she never sent them. then later said the papers might have been destroyed. all it could do was pay to replace them. >> months went by. we never got the money. >> reporter: they contacted 7 on your side, and we checked in on the lost documents the state department would not discuss the case, citing privacy laws, but did say, we are fully committed to a secure passport issuance system. and continue to strengthen the integrity of the application process. in the rare instance when citizenship evidence is lost, we will reimburse the customer for the cost of replacement. and it did. >> and we did go on the trip and had a great time. >> reporter: now all that's left it to wonder what really happened to those papers. jane and ira have purchased identity theft protection, and said from now on they'll apply for a passport at a local office, keeping those documents in hand. i'm michael finney. 7 on your side. the hot ticket in silicon valley this weekend was to a county style fair. take a look. it was held by facebook at its

curret temperatures look like this, with numbers anywhere from the 50s at the coast, mild inland, 66. san jose, livermore, 77. 60 in san mateo. 50s in the north bay and along the coast our excessive heat warning continues with highlighted pink areas reaching anywhere from 95 to 108. so we are at least seven degrees warmer in livermore. more than that by the delta and even in san francisco, we are warmer. so spare the air alert today. the air quality will be poor in our inland east bay. santa clara valley. and your forecast looks like this with plenty of sunshine. 50s to near 70. mid 60s noon time. yes, not even noon, and we're going to see temperatures feeling very, very warm by the afternoon. 106. so it looks like we are just in the middle of this prolonged heatwave. i'll explain in a few minutes. chris? >> lisa, thank you. a massive emergency response

from hurricane harvey. this is from the international space station just before landfall friday. approximately 1,000 people are taking part in search and rescue operations. abc news has more from austin. >> reporter: in texas, military might helping the search and rescue mission. the coast guard saving 18 boaters, including these four from a sinking tug. near rockport, one couple stranded with their dog got a chopper lift to a nearby hospital. in houston, floodwaters turned this suv into a submarine. one man escapes out the back. >> watch your head. >> thank you. >> reporter: another helps tow it out. >> this is in the middle of hurricane harvey. >> reporter: the national guard force now battling harvey up to 1,800 troops. their effort appreciated by even the smallest texans. >> thank you! >> thank you! >> abc news, austin. and coming up on this week, abc news will provide live coverage during the show of

harvey's impact and aftermath. the panel will also discuss president trump's afghanistan policy. join george stephanopoulos. a terrorist incident outside buckingham palace. police have now arrested a second man on suspicion of involvement in terrorism. three officers were injured friday as they arrested a 26-year-old man who drove up to a police car, then reached for a four-foot sword. no members of the royal family were inside the palace at the time of the incident. the top u.s. army commander in afghanistan is detailing some of the renewed steps in the war on terror. america's new strategy follows a speech by president trump, saying that the u.s. would increase its presence in the war-torn nation. this reversed what the president hinted at while running for office to reduce this u.s. role after 16 years of fighting. it also changes the policy

established by former president obama. >> so in the past, we've timed our presence on the calendar. now we're saying we're basing it on conditions on the ground. when we achieve certain conditions, then we will consider the next step. >> right now the u.s. has 8,400 troops in afghanistan. some of the additional 3,900 troops being sent there will fl deploy immediately. president trump faces a new wave of controversy following his pardon of former arizona sheriff joe arpaio. the controversial law man was facing jail time for aggressive tactics against immigrants. the pardon has critics on both sides of the aisle. abc news reporter mary bruce has the story. >> reporter: as hurricane harvey was hitting texas, the president getting briefed. but also at the center of a political storm of his own making. first friday evening, signing that directive implementing his ban on transgender individuals

from search serving in the military. hours later, with little fanfare, the president pardoned former arizona sheriff, joe arpaio. the 85-year-old was convicted of criminal contempt for ignoring a judge's order to stop using racial fro rio file to go detain latinos. he hadn't even been sentenced yet. >> i have fought on the front lines to prevent illegal immigration. >> reporter: but critics accuse him of blatant discrimination. human rights groups reacted swiftly. >> i'm angry. what trump did today was pardon racism, white supremacy and okayed the terror that arpaio caused. >> reporter: in a statement, the white house praised arpaio's admiral service to the nation. arizona republican john mccain says the president's pardon undermines his claim for the respect of rule of law. adding that arpaio has shown no

remorse. on twitter, arpaio thanked the president for seeing my conviction for what it is. a political witch hunt. the timing of the president's move is raising eyebrows. senate democratic leader, chuck schumer, is accusing him of using the cover of hurricane harvey to avoid scrutiny, tweeting, so sad, so weak. mary bruce, abc news, washington. the families of two missing hikers hope a $10,000 reward helps them find them one month after the couple vanished. 20-year-old rachel nguyen and 21-year-old joseph orbaso disappeared in joshua tree national park. searchers found their car in a rugged area called the mays loop trail. >> if joseph and rachel can see or hear this message, we want them to know we love them very much. if joseph and rachel are held against their will and are captive in any way, please, we

it starts at 10:00 this morning at st. john and market. also happening today, thousands of runners will take to the streets of san francisco for the eighth annual giant race. runners will start in front of at&t park at 7:00 this morning. there's a half marathon, 10k, 5k and family relay down the embarcadero. the giant race benefits the san francisco based nonprofits probable open hand, the leukemia team and training program and the pro sid o. about 20,000 runners are expected. meteorologist lisa argen is here. and it's a good thing that race is in the morning instead of the afternoon with the heat-up. >> even by 10:00, it's too hot. so really, if you want to get out, you know, the time to get out is now, the next hour or so. we're looking at an excessive heat advisory for our inland valleys. a heat warning, actually. and we have upgraded our heat advisory. even the san francisco shoreline will be on the warm side today. so it is 63 in hayward. good morning to you. we're well into the 60s in our

with christian mccaffrey playing in the nfl, the big question was how would the offense do without him? against rice, it was no problem. this game was played in sydney, australia, where it was actually sunday afternoon. on the first play from scrimmage, love does a great mccaffrey impression. he pops into the clear and nearly goes all the way. it's a 62-yard scamper. the longest run of his career. a few plays later, keller chris finds freshman tight end, colby parkinson in the end zone. the route was on. love finished with 180 yards rushing on just 13 carries. he also scored this touchdown. it was 21-0 after one quarter. junior running back cameron scarlet had a big game early in the second. he breaks loose for a 29-yard touchdown. then late in the half, scarlet will score again. he had three touchdowns as a cardinal crushes rice, 62-7. stanford next plays september 9th at usc. should be a good one.

san jose state opened against number 19 south florida. the spartans got off to a great start. it's 10-0, san jose. then after a blocked punt, that combo strikes again. love to gaither, and it's 16-0, spartans. but from then on, it was all bulls as they outscored san jose 42-6. quinton flowers item u lacka. next week the spartans play host to cal poly. preseason football had the raiders in texas to take on the cowboys, and derek carr looked sharp. he finds patterson between two defenders. he completed 13 of 17 passes for 144 yards and two scores. this one to amari cooper for a 48-yard touchdown. it was 13-10, raiders. the defense tacked on a score in the third. cooper rush fumbles the football. latroy lewis grabs it out of mid air and returns it all the way, 65 yards. dallas came back to take the

argen. >> august has been actually a pretty cool month. we are changing that. we started with the triple digit heat yesterday. tied records, broke records and today, get out there right now. doesn't look beautiful out there. the sky is clear. temperatures in the 50s in the north bay. now we are going to be hot again. don't want to scare you with this. but check it out. this is livermore at 106 today. 106 tomorrow. we do get a break as we go into the myth of t the middle of the week with 90s here. we're even warmer or just as warm into the triple digit heat once again through the end of the week. so it looks like september is starting off very warm. but the flag, yeah, it's blowing here. we've got our sea breeze intact throughout the day today. but i think the coast is going to be even warmer today than it was yesterday. so we had some patchy fog yesterday. today you could see from the san mateo coastline right here, that's about all it's going to take throughout the afternoon

for it to redevelop. and as a result we are looking at a very warm day today. in fact, the fog all the way down through the central coast and southern california. so we are still keeping our eye here on tropical storm harvey, where the rain continues to just pummel houston. you can see the reds, the banding here, and this is just not moving. it's at 45 miles per hour, continues to drift in and around the area throughout the next day. that's sunday. then monday. and you can see how the rain has been adding up here with over 20 inches east of houston. and then we're looking at the rain to continue into tuesda and wednesday. this forecast model goes into thursday. and perhaps friday. it's just so, so unfortunate with over 2 inches of rain additionally. now places have already picked up over a foot and a half of rain. so i heard one forecaster say that he wouldn't be surprised to see 60 inches before this is all said and done in some areas. so you really have to feel for those people. back home, we are looking at a

clear and not only comfortable shot this morning, but the air temperature is going to be warming quickly. san jose is at 66. 57 in gilroy. sfo on the peninsula, boy, it's going to be warm. well into the 80s. 55 right now in novato, and looking at temperatures even warmer out by the dealta now in the 70s. this is our east bay hills camera and it's clear the air quality is not great. it continues to be oppressive in our east bay, south bay. so keep that in mind as you're heading out. if you want to go to santa cruz, should be a nice day today. beach temperatures in the upper 60s, half moon bay. 78 in santa cruz with the water temperature of 58 degrees. so where is the fog? well, it's not until about 4:00 that we see it set up along the coast. and then it will keep us cool overnight tonight into monday. but we're still hot inland. so we've got our heat advisory. this is all along the bay shore here, and then the excessive heat warning from 95 to 108 again today. highlighted in pink there. so highs around the bay today
