confrontations. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live in berkeley with more. >> reporter: hi, eric. birthplace of the free speech movement certainly saw a lot of free speech today and violent clashes were not far behind. civic center park, virtually empty tonight. what a difference from what we saw hours ago when thousands showed up to demonstrate. sky 7 was overhead as today's rally spiralled into violence. a group dressed in black attacked another group near the park. even though a plan anti-marxist rally was canceled, thousands converged on civic park, sparking confrontation between the left and the right. >> you kill nazis and you callmy nazis is like calling me the "n" word. >> they bring violence with them. i don't want it here. what do very with to do to get niece people out?

>> reporter: berkeley police vowed to arrest anyone who brought items into the rally, which could be used as a weapon. police arrested many. we witnessed this protester being tackled. >> i've taken on the alt-right title, i guess. >> reporter: right-wing protester johnny benitez from california says he came to berkeley for peaceful dialogue but got shouted down by the crowd. things got so heat, benitez and his friends were escorted out of the park by police. >> we were just standing there talking to people. people in masks showed up, trying to drag me out to the middle. >> they wanted to beat -- >> they wanted to kill me. >> reporter: violent clashes went on for several hours. police dispersed smoke canisters to disperse the crowd. later in the day thousands more marched in the park, a peaceful counterdemonstration. we just checked with berkeley police, 13 people were arrested today. the ap reporting tonight that

patriot prayer founder joey gibson showed up today and was chased and pepper sprayed by counterdemonstrators. he was escorted out of the park by police for his own safety. live in berkeley, abc7 news. >> thank you. clashes there and iteam reporter dan noyes was in the thick of it and back to talk about what he witnessed. live on set, we can see from the video you shot, it got pretty rowdy. >> a range of emotions in these confrontations. tense standoff, some humor and a bit of fear 37 but there was one moment i won't forget. someone from the left standing up for a trump supporter in trouble. >> reporter: police had a firm hold on the park when i spoke to shawn haynes during his arrest. he had gone through security and then put on his black mask. >> were you coming to cause trouble? >> i can neither confirm nor deny it. >> reporter: the calm before the melee give me a chance to speak with a college student and

anarchist. >> i look like i'm ready to fight. >> reporter: he told me he's not there for violence but he couldn't say the same for his friends. >> i'm coming in a nonviolence stance. >> reporter: they broke through police barricades and took over the park. the police retreated. i was on my own. at one point, dozens of people in masks chant the name of a young woman killed in charolettesville. i was struck by the sheer number of antifa, men and women dressed in black, more than 100 as they marched from the park. as the treatment of the trump supporters sticking with me. last month she was attacked with a broken bottle in a manhattan bar while making a make america great hat. he's been through so much. in berkeley today he was vastly outnumbered and shouted down. saying rough treatment for transwomen trump supporter erin smith. this young man wore a mouth guard preparing for contact and the crowd pushed him hard toward

long week in texas as hurricane harvey now a tropical storm brings massive rainfall inland. >> fema will be there for years. this disaster recovery, this disaster is going to be a landmark event. >> reporter: texas governor greg abbott says people around the country are offering their support. >> we've even received assistance from governor cuomo in new york as well as offers of help from florida, arizona. this is something where everybody from the united states is pitching in to help out. >> reporter: people are fleeing their flooded homes in the houston area as the storm stalls over texas. meanwhile, houston's mayor defends his decision not to issue an evacuation order prior to the severe flooding. >> this is unprecedented. this is -- there's a lot of rain, so which neighborhood would you have to evacuate? quite frankly, every neighborhood, every community, receive water and are flooded. every bayou over its bank.

you cannot put 2.3 million on the road. that's dangerous. >> reporter: for those that did not evacuate, most roads are impassable, leaving many stranded and in need of assistance. for all of the people who did evacuate, many will not be going home any time soon. abc7 news. abc7 news was in menlo park as they packed up to leave for houston. men l menlo park's fire chief says it's the most significant deployment since hurricane katrina. >> 501 in one day, had 66 helicopters come in. it was unbelievable, right? i'm not sure if these guys will eclipse that. i hope they do because that means we're doing what we're supposed to be doing, which is moving people out of the inundation area. >> they will get straight to work, evacuating people from flooded homes, taking them to dry land. today meteorologist drew tuma

tweeted san francisco's yearly rainfall was dropped on houston in one day. >> it puts you in perspective that in 365 days of rain here in the bay area, that was dropped on the city of houston in such a short amount of time. live doppler 7 right now showing you that storm, just continues to sit and rotate over texas with heavy bands of rain in the reds and yellows. look at the rainfall the past 48 hours. just around houston alone, more than 23 inches of rain has fallen in those spots. you see shaded in that gray region. now, the latest track from the national hurricane center does have harvey going back out over the gulf of mexico strengthening a bit tuesday overnight and then heading right into houston. so, for the next three or four days, look at the rainfall that will add onto what they have already seen, more than a foot of rainfall still to come in houston. that's why the problems are just getting started for a lot of folks as additional rain will

exacerbate the conditions there. we'll take a closer look at the weather. it's heat today. that heat will last another day tomorrow. we'll have the numbers ahead. >> thank you very much. pg&e just reported that power has been restored following an outage in several san francisco neighborhoods. that outage hit around the same time something exploded inside a vault beneath carl street. the oouutility has not said if explosion triggered the power outage. at one point it affected 6300 pg&e customers. the high school football player remains in a drug-induced coma after suffering a traumatic brain injury. 17-year-old bailey foley plays for fortune that high in humbolt county. he had seizures during the game on friday. his parents drove nearly 200 miles to be at his side. a go fund me page set out to raise $5,000 for his family. so far people have donated $21,000. the head of travel website

swimmers and boaters could face health risks because of high levels of e. coli in the american river in sacramento. there have been no reports of anyone getting sick from e. coli in the river. officials suspect human waste from nearby homeless camps could be to blame. sacramento county has approved more money to clean up the area. pclassics poltergeist and texas chain saw massacre has passed away. a coroner reports toby cooper died of natural causes.

with satellite, can you see it's a nice picture if you like cool weather along the coast. we have fog. about 95% of the region is baking under some sunshine right now. east bay hills camera showing you the silhouette of san francisco in the background, the tower up in the corner and on the coast, can you see that fog. it will be in spots tonight but very limited. it's not going to reach our inland valleys to cool us off quickly overnight tonight. right now a look at these numbers. still at this hour. 105 in san ramone. it is warm in san jose. 91 degrees. hayward at 80 degrees. probably the only cool spot is san francisco and half moon bay in the mid-50s to mid-60s. even in north bay. santa rosa right now, it is warm with a current temperature of 90 degrees. the call overnight tonight, really limited fog along the coast and perhaps through san francisco. elsewhere plenty of stars out there. and it will be a rather warm night for some away from the coast. inlandwehr holding in the mid
