tonight an around-the-clock effort to rescue people flooded out of their homes continues in texas as more rain threatens to make the situation much worse. thanks for joining us, i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. tonight's harvey's wrath is expanding. unrelenting rain forcing thousands to evacuate. >> the water continues to rise, leaving people scrambling to get to dry land. under pouring rain, dozens jumped on dump trucks to get to safety. a reporter from our sister station talked to one of the youngest evacuees. a dump truck took him to a site where he was reunited with his mom. >> what was it like when he left? >> flooded. >> reporter: what do you mean? >> up to my neck flooded. >> reporter: serious? how scary was that. >> i started crying. >> as anybody would do. the storm is blamed for at least six deaths. officials say more than 4,400 rescues and evacuations happened today alone. 25 inches of rain pounded houston in only 36 hours.

forecasters expect that amount to double. abc news reporter lana zak has the latest from houston. >> reporter: good evening, dan and ama. there's been so much generosity here but the need is so great here in houston and elsewhere. officials and the red cross are calling for additional assistance. they ask for volunteers, particularly anybody with medical training. >> houston's george r. brown convention center is beyond capacity. originally planned to host 5,000 evacuees, that number was quickly exceeded but the red cross doesn't want to turn anyone away. >> honestly, this is what katrina was like. >> reporter: thousands of evacuees arrived by bus load and dump truck. for many, the only possessions are the damp clothes on their bodies, everything else is gone. >> please proceed into the shelter. >> reporter: lorena campos was lifted by chopper from rising floodwaters with her four children. >> i'm trying to hold it together for them. >> reporter: she doesn't know how long they will be here. >> i mean -- >> reporter: were you able to

get a cot? >> we didn't, we haven't yet. >> reporter: there's been an out pouring of generosity, but it is dwarfed by the need. >> we don't have anything, you know. we lost everything in our apartment. it is just really unfortunate. >> reporter: the water and air rescues continue. >> anybody need help? >> reporter: as million also of gallons of water are being released from area rest serve wars, officials hep to preserve a catastrophic dam failure. >> there's a reality we have to come to grips with, and that is we are just beginning the process of responding to this storm. >> reporter: 12,000 members of the national guard have been deployed to help the disaster affecting millions over thousand also of square miles, but so often the rescuer is just a person who decides to help. >> we called 911. >> 911 won't help you. i'm here to help you. >> reporter: a new band of heavy rains are pounding the houston area tonight, and with it comes new flood warning. in addition, louisiana and new orleans in particular are

concerned about the possibility of flash floods. reporting from houston, lana zack, "abc 7 news." and take a look at an expression of support and sympathy tonight for the storm's victims. >> in new york city, the empire state building went dark for those affect by harvey, just a show of support. now, as we mentioned and as you saw in lana's report, texas is not getting a break from the rain. >> no, "abc 7 news" meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking harvey. >> as you look at live doppler 7, tropical storm harvey is still hammering texas and louisiana. our radar right now showing bands of heavy rain continue to move in across the houston area, also around galveston. estimates for this region, which are pretty impressive. 2.74 inches an hour. in louisiana they're seeing steady on shore winds feeding moisture in into the storm from the gulf of mexico, the warm

water sustaining this tropical storm and it is not in a hurry to leave any time soon. when you look at the rainfall projections, they've been counting rain in feet. the drenching will continue with life-threatening flooding, 10 to 20 inches of additional rain expected. it is packing winds of 45 miles an hour, expect to move to the east, southeast at five miles an hour, exacerbating the existing flooding conditions in the area, eventually moving in towards louisiana area and then up towards memphis, tennessee. it is going to be days of drenching rain and a serious situation there. ama. >> all right. thank you, sandhya. national guard members from here in the bay area are now in houston to help out. "abc 7 news" was at moffett field today where 90 search and rescue specialists packed up supplies and floou out. the 129th rescue wing helped out after previous hurricanes including rita, ike and gustav.

>> bay area companies are doing what they can to help people affected by the hurricane. >> in some cases they're making multi-million dollar donation goes. "abc 7 news" reporter lilian kim is in the newsroom with the story. >> reporter: dan and ama, contributions range from cash and supplies. a few are taking part in fundraising efforts. workers at the san francisco office of the red cross say donations are pouring in. apple gave the organization two million dollars. chevron donated a million. oakland-based clorox sent supplies to the disaster zone. >> the scale will be as big as we've seen in a decade. even though the traction is good and we're seeing a good response from donors, we need it to sustain. >> reporter: in addition to making donations, companies are helping to fund rauz. apple's i tunes gives users to donate to the red cross, and

wells fargo added an option to do the same from atms. redwood city-based gofundme has been filling a need. 275 harvey related campaigns found on the side have raised over a million so far, money going to everything from animal organizations to families. >> we work with the organizers and the beneficiaries to make sure the money is going to the right place. >> reporter: plenty of options to help those in need in the hurricane zone. lilian kim, "abc 7 news." now, contributions, one easy way to donate is by texting the word harvey to 90999. that will add a $10 donation to the red cross on your cellphone bill. you can also call the red cross to donate. that's 1-800-help-now if you have another figure in mind. abc will host a day of giving on thursday to benefit those affected by hurricane harvey. the day will come off on abc 7

mornings before handing the baton over to good morning america. donations go to the american red cross with dollars benefitting those most impact by the terrible storm. >> while texas deals with record ray, the bay area is facing record heat. >> wasn't it brutal in places? for people hoping to cool off in one east bay swimming pool, well, they were out of luck. >> "abc 7 news" reporter alyssa harrington joins us live from walnut creek. >> reporter: you know, pools all over the bay area have been forced to cut their summer hours. this is directly linked to school districts, and they're shorter than ever summer breaks. monday was one of the hottest days in walnut creek. temperatures soared into the triple digits. the city spent almost five million dollars renovating the swim center, but this sweltering summer day the pool was closed. >> pool schedules revolve around

our local school district. >> she blames the earlier starts to the school year. most of the life guards are in high school or college, and when they're in class the pools lose their staff. >> so with schools pushing their start date back or forward through -- into august, that's definitely affect not only our swim lesson schedule but our recreational schedule as well. >> reporter: walnut creek pools have been closed for rec swimming since the second week of augustest. these kids at clark memorial, the other city's swim center are taking lessons. >> it feels great to be in the pool today. it is a hot day and it is a good way to stay cool. >> reporter: we found people finding other ways to cool off. employees say on hot days the line for their super trendy rolled ice cream is an hour wait. >> an hour wait for ice cream, no lie. >> reporter: triple digits are expected to return later this week. alyssa harrington "abc 7 news"

two people are dead and a suspect is in custody after a mass shooting at a new mexico public library. video shows the suspect being led away by law enforcement. it happened in clovis near the texas border. a witness said the gunman marched into the library with a gun and started shooting. four were hurt. japan called for an urgent meeting with the u.n. after north korea fired a missile over japan today. sirens and phone messages warned residents across the nation about the missile flight. prime minister shinzo abe said he talked to president trump and both nations are standing in solidarity. the missile crossed a northern island before it reportedly broke apart and fell into the pacific. activists are claiming victory tonight against white supremacists in berkley following a rally that turned

violent at times. activist groups gave reaction today to the demonstration snday calling it a success. >> either we're going to be the people who let this happen, on made the same mistake the germans made or we're going to be different people and stand up to >> the runs including searching people, having physical separation between both sides and arresting people who covered their faces. >> the city of palo alto considered a unique band. >> "abc 7 news" reporter katie marzullo is live in palo alto with a story new at 11:00. >> reporter: about an hour ago the city council voted unanimously to move forward with the plan to ban idling cars. so the next step is for city staff to craft the actual ordinance, and then if the city council approves that the vice mayor tells me it could be enforced come fall.

from this hot weather. it will get a little bit cooler tomorrow, but it is not going the last. so concord's highs the next couple of days in the low to mid 90s. you are out of the triple digits. but look at the stretch of hot weather. we will be in the 100s well into the labor day weekend. so get ready for some very hot conditions. as a matter of fact, heat warning and advisors may be issued again as we head to the end of the workweek into the weekend. a live look from the east bay hills camera looking at a great shot of the moon there and the fog layer down below. i want to show you live doppler 7. it is socked in along the coast. half moon bay has been reporting reduced visibility and some of the fog will creep in over parts of the bay? it has already started doing that. 60s.erature also in the 50s, but if you get well inland it feels like a warm summer night definitely with the 70s and 80s still, so hanging on to some of the heat. at least you have the ac to cool you off. temperatures heading in the right direction if you don't like the hot weather and that's

down for most of you, down 7 degrees in fairfield. from the "abc 7 news" exploratorium camera you are watching the fog moving to the bay bridge there. here is a look at the forecast. relief arrives tomorrow. temperatures soar again thursday and friday and hot through the holiday weekend inland. if you are driving, you will have foggy spots with reduced visibility, so allow a little more time to get to work or get your kids to school. murky skies if you are taking the ferry. it will be cool to mind defending on where you are if you are walking. along the coast cool, inland areas mild. temperature also low to mid 60s inland, but near the beaches will go with the mid 50s with the foggy condition also. here are the highs for tuesday. it is definitely this direction in terms of temperatures. 86 degrees in san jose, at least that will be bearable. 92 in morgan field. on peninsula, 78 in mountain view. coast side, with the fog hanging around, bruisy around the sunset

area. north bay will be in the upper 80s. heading to east bay, low 70s. oakland, berkley a nice day. inland spots will be warm but at least not dealing with triple digit sizzle. 94 in walnut creek. the hot weather will return but not immediately. the brief break continues on wednesday from the heat with near average temperatures, 60s to 90s. thursday it is a rapid warm up. look at the numbers. extreme heat inland on friday. along the coastline will go with 70s as well. here is the accuweather seven day forecast. then it is hot, holt, hot thursday on, all the way through monday which is labor day. we'll have a five-day stretch of triple digit heat. this heat wave will be intense, but if you are near the beaches we'll go with 70s. sunday and monday in the 60s ama and dan, download the accuweather app and keep track of the changing temperature also. they will be changing this week. >> thanks, sandhya. >> cooling down, never looked so
