tonight an around-the-clock effort to rescue people flooded out of their homes continues in texas as more rain threatens to make the situation much worse. thanks for joining us, i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. tonight's harvey's wrath is expanding. unrelenting rain forcing thousands to evacuate. >> the water continues to rise, leaving people scrambling to get to dry land. under pouring rain, dozens jumped on dump trucks to get to safety. a reporter from our sister station talked to one of the youngest evacuees. a dump truck took him to a site where he was reunited with his mom. >> what was it like when he left? >> flooded. >> reporter: what do you mean? >> up to my neck flooded. >> reporter: serious? how scary was that. >> i started crying. >> as anybody would do. the storm is blamed for at least six deaths. officials say more than 4,400 rescues and evacuations happened today alone. 25 inches of rain pounded houston in only 36 hours.

forecasters expect that amount to double. abc news reporter lana zak has the latest from houston. >> reporter: good evening, dan and ama. there's been so much generosity here but the need is so great here in houston and elsewhere. officials and the red cross are calling for additional assistance. they ask for volunteers, particularly anybody with medical training. >> houston's george r. brown convention center is beyond capacity. originally planned to host 5,000 evacuees, that number was quickly exceeded but the red cross doesn't want to turn anyone away. >> honestly, this is what katrina was like. >> reporter: thousands of evacuees arrived by bus load and dump truck. for many, the only possessions are the damp clothes on their bodies, everything else is gone. >> please proceed into the shelter. >> reporter: lorena campos was lifted by chopper from rising floodwaters with her four children. >> i'm trying to hold it together for them. >> reporter: she doesn't know how long they will be here. >> i mean -- >> reporter: were you able to

concerned about the possibility of flash floods. reporting from houston, lana zack, "abc 7 news." and take a look at an expression of support and sympathy tonight for the storm's victims. >> in new york city, the empire state building went dark for those affect by harvey, just a show of support. now, as we mentioned and as you saw in lana's report, texas is not getting a break from the rain. >> no, "abc 7 news" meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking harvey. >> as you look at live doppler 7, tropical storm harvey is still hammering texas and louisiana. our radar right now showing bands of heavy rain continue to move in across the houston area, also around galveston. estimates for this region, which are pretty impressive. 2.74 inches an hour. in louisiana they're seeing steady on shore winds feeding moisture in into the storm from the gulf of mexico, the warm

water sustaining this tropical storm and it is not in a hurry to leave any time soon. when you look at the rainfall projections, they've been counting rain in feet. the drenching will continue with life-threatening flooding, 10 to 20 inches of additional rain expected. it is packing winds of 45 miles an hour, expect to move to the east, southeast at five miles an hour, exacerbating the existing flooding conditions in the area, eventually moving in towards louisiana area and then up towards memphis, tennessee. it is going to be days of drenching rain and a serious situation there. ama. >> all right. thank you, sandhya. national guard members from here in the bay area are now in houston to help out. "abc 7 news" was at moffett field today where 90 search and rescue specialists packed up supplies and floou out. the 129th rescue wing helped out after previous hurricanes including rita, ike and gustav.

>> bay area companies are doing what they can to help people affected by the hurricane. >> in some cases they're making multi-million dollar donation goes. "abc 7 news" reporter lilian kim is in the newsroom with the story. >> reporter: dan and ama, contributions range from cash and supplies. a few are taking part in fundraising efforts. workers at the san francisco office of the red cross say donations are pouring in. apple gave the organization two million dollars. chevron donated a million. oakland-based clorox sent supplies to the disaster zone. >> the scale will be as big as we've seen in a decade. even though the traction is good and we're seeing a good response from donors, we need it to sustain. >> reporter: in addition to making donations, companies are helping to fund rauz. apple's i tunes gives users to donate to the red cross, and
