this. it's horrible. i have my 2-year-old. he told me he was scared. >> a lot of people scared. the rescues continue. a u.s. border and customs saved two women trapped in the water. a houston police officer was not so lucky. we learned he died in flooding trying to get to work. >> wife told me she asked him not to go in because the conditions were so bad. his response was, we've got work to do. >> here is sergeant steve perez. the veteran officer died on sunday trying to help others. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> sergeant perez was one of eight people killed by the storm. the number could jump once officials release details about family of six also believed to be dead. >> more than 10,000 people have been rescued with efforts going strong tonight. last night 17,000 people stayed mo shelters. rere this evening.

there will many stories of people looking out for one another. >> we begin our team coverage with laura anthony. she's opinibeen helping our sis station all day. she's live now in katy, texas north of houston. >> reporter: this is where we've been all day. focus of a lot of efforts here in terms of the rescue and bringing people out. you can see behind me, this is a neighborhood called cinco ranch. it's in katy, texas. we're west of houston. the situation despite the fact it hasn't been raining that much has gotten worse over the last 24 hours. let's show you what it looked like earlier today when we went out on a boat. these are just citizen rescue crews that have come here. we saw the national guard. the ones that are making the most effort or having the greatest affect are actually the citizen rescuers. these guys came with their own boat, a flat bottom boat. we went out with them. they were taking calls tr people who wanted to get rescued.

we were riding along with them. we went through these neighborhoods in some places four, five feet deep. joining me right now is mindy boggs. your home is in there, correct? what do you know about what's going on at this point? >> we left yesterday morning at about 5:00 a.m. we were still able to amphetamine out. the streets were clear. we made a couple of trips back this to get extra clothing assuming we would be gone for a while. a few of our neighborhoods stayed. they told us this morning it was rising quickly up to their ankles and up to their shins. they were going to try to ride it out for various reasons. they had animals or other things they felt like they couldn't leave. now i'm waiting on a boat to come out with the very last group from my cul-de-sac. everyone is safe that i know in there. >> it seems kind of cruel. the sun is out. it hasn't rained much in the last several hours but you are still in the thick of it. >> that's right. what we've been told it's not

expected to crest at 104.5 feet until thursday. as long as the water keeps coming, it's going to keep rising into our house which is right next to the reservoir. >> reporter: you still have a smile on your face? >> you have to. we're here. our people are alive. it hurts. every once and a while i feel like i got sucker punched and scream and cry. but we're here. it's just stuff. >> reporter: that's it here tonight. the skies are not clear but it's not raining. the situation just continues to be an emergency for these folks. we will be here. we're helping the sister station here but we're also trying to give you guys some insight into what's going on here. live in houston, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> just incredible. at least the rain has stopped. authorities have rescued thousands of people and team of oakland firefighters is there helping out right now. thankfully after waiting hours to get rescued the family of

this baby says they are all okay and praying for their neighbors. it's not just authorities. community heroes are stepping up. this photograph shows a man on a jet ski pulling a grandmother from her flooded home in southeast houston. >> it's just not been moving much. it's starting to pick up a little bit of speed. let me show you live doppler 7. you will notice it's still raining across parts of texas, louisiana, some wands are heavy. this is the latest from the national hurricane center over texas and louisiana so the historic flooding continues. i just want to give you an idea as the how heavy some of the rainfall is in the area. 2.74 inches across parts of texas and louisiana. when you take a look here the eye of the storm is still pretty well defined. it's because the warm moist source of air, the gulf of mexico continues to feed this storm. tracking to east and as you

notice it continues to move upwards friday afternoon. this one will go down in the record books. cedar bayou texas. 51.88 inches breaking the previous record of 48. two to three years worth of rain for the bay area is what harvey has produced in cedar bayou. it's staggering statistics. >> hard to fathom. a woman who just moved to the bay area has been hit hard by the devastation in houston. >> her husband and son are still there and okay. >> my heart drops to my stomach and i just can't believe it. >> reporter: lisa is having a difficult time looking at any video of the hurricane damage in houston. she caught a glimpse of her home

with the bright yellow door on the news. >> that little blue car is my son's car and you couldn't see it. the water was so high the other night. that's my husband's car. >> reporter: felix just moved to the south bay for a new job three weeks ago but her husband stayed behind in houston so their son could finish his senior year in high school there. saturday night the water reached five feet in their home. out of desperation he decided to swim with his dog out the front door. >> the water was quite high and the dog would literally had to swim and my husband was swimming, paddling, made their way swimming over to this other house that was a few houses down. >> reporter: marco was able to make it to a neighbor's house at a higher elevation. we spoke to him by phone. >> they give me brand new clothes, fresh clothes. it was great ordeal. it was very scary. >> reporter: their son was at a frie friend's home that did not

flood. it was two days before they could reunite. marco returned to the home. you could see from the water line how high it rose. nearly all their possessions were destroyed. >> they're splaed all over the ground. they're wet. my husband says it's starting to smell like mold and it's not going to be livable for a very long time. >> reporter: this is the third year in a row their home has flooded. they are feeling overwhelmed and asking for prayers. in san jose, abc 7 news. now to a bride to be forced to evacuate from her texas home. >> the santa rosa woman had to leave behind her fiance arnds wedding accessories. >> no matter what, the ceremony will take place next month. >> i threw clothes into a suitcase. i departments even pack them. >> reporter: barely escaping hit by hurricane harvey. she loaded up her car with two dogs and headed to austin from padre island.

they thought it wouldn't do much damage. >> we need to figure out where we're going. you have to make a plan. >> but nobody imagined it would be this bad. >> no. >> reporter: once she realized she wouldn't be able to return for a while, she headed west to her parents home in santa rosa. her fiance stayed behind. she's a coast guard rescue swimmer. they have spoken very little. >> yesterday he did 29. >> 29? >> rescues. like 29 people. >> reporter: here is her fiance saving an elderly woman. her wedding dress has yet to be altered but it will have to wait. >> it's really hard for he to be here because everybody is just going on with normal life and there it's just devastation. >> reporter: the family is glued to the tv while hoping that her fiance will get relieved from his duties. >> i told her fiance, i said i promised her that you would be okay. i don't break my promises to my kids and you better come home

safe. >> reporter: the wedding is still scheduled for september 22nd. >> one ease y way to help hurricane victims is donating cash to the red cross. you can text harvey to 90999. that will add a $10 donation to your cell phone bill. a driver plow into a house in novato right into the living room. two adults and a toddler were home at the time. they'll have to find temporary housing after a dibuilding inspector deemed their home uninhabitable. the car has since been removed. a newspaper delivery man is in the hospital in grave condition after getting struck by a hit and run driver today in san jose. police say he was delivering a paper and tried to walk back across moore park avenue when a vehicle hit him and drove off.

a mare airror and other parts w left. a online petition has put pressure to allow a mother from vietnam to visit her terminally ill daughter in san jose. we see how a south bay congresswoman has stepped up to help. >> reporter: the clock is ticking for this san jose family. 33-year-old tren has terminal lung cancer and would cherish a visit from her mother who lives in vietnam. >> we don't know when the end will be coming so it's absolutely imperative. >> reporter: family spokesperson said her mother has been denied a temporary visa. the concern is her intent is to overstay her visa once she sees her ailing daughter in san jose. the family says the mother will return as she cares for her husband and grand children this

vietnam. an online petition quickly collected 15,000 signatures. it got the attention of san jose congresswoman who contacted the state department and sent a letter to president trump. that worked because her mother has been told to reapply and she's been scheduled for an expedited hearing. >> an expedited interview for her mother has completely uplifted her and today was the first day that she was able to regain her strength and in fact, had a meal. >> reporter: tren has lost 50 pounds since she got sick. the cancer has spread to her bone and brain and other complications have developed. the status of this mother and daughter reunion hinges on this meeting to happen at the u.s. consulate. >> it's her desire the appointment and interview goes through smoothly so she can hop on the next plane to san jose.

they say water has started to fill the area. a residents posted this picture. a mandatory evacuation order was issued for west columbia on sunday. preventing a levee breach is what's going on in contra costa county. flood prevention work is happening at two he sllevees inh richmo richmond. >> reporter: it's hard to imagine now but come winter time flood water from the hills will crash into tides water from the bay right here where i'm standing and everything around here will be under water. now sometimes that water stays here this this creek bed. sometimes it flows over the banks and floods out into the streets. today county leaders broke ground on a project that aims to fix that. >> there he go. good job. >> reporter: as survivors of houston's flooding make their way to safety officials have gotten out their gardening tools. >> bit by bit to remove these.

it's going to take some time. >> reporter: these two worlds are closer than you think. >> this whole area used to be cover with ivy. it's restricting the flood flows. >> reporter: this is the first step in a levee improvement project designed to prevent flooding like what's happened in houston but also like what happened last winter in san jose. >> as we see what's happening in the gulf coast it makes us realize this is important to prevent the community from being impacted. >> reporter: contra costa county will raise the levees a foot and a half. >> it may not seem like a lot but it's 1.7 million worth it to fw get that done. >> that 18 inches can provide the difference between a house or property being flooded or not. that's a huge impact on the lives of people live here. >> reporter: people have seen it wreak havoc since the 1950s. >> the pulley constructed levees under heavy rains and floating.

>> reporter: they broke new levees in the '80s. the project will save residents and put local teens to work. >> it's a win-win situation. instead of contracting out to people in other communities people will reinvest that money in our local youth. >> tonight san francisco based uber may be under investigation for violation of u.s. foreign bribery laws. the wall street journal reports the justice department is looking into whether the company violated a law that makes it illegal for individuals and organizations to pay foreign government officials in other words to obtain or retain business. it's not clear what incidents or countries the department is looking into. nancy pelosi and san francisco mayor ed lee toured a construction job training program today at city college. trainees and graduates

thursday. also getting warm. dangerous heat on friday. some of these spots the computer models are throwing out 112. i think that's higher than what we're forecasting. it's going to be danger. watch out. no relief on saturday. the only place you can go to escape the heat will be the coast around this time of year. accuweather seven-day forecast, it's a wide range of temperatures for your wednesday. low 60s to mid-90s. 104 for the hot spots thursday. extreme heat arrives friday and saturday with 110 degrees. i don't think i can recall putting 110 on the accuweather seven-day forecast in the last 24 years. upper 70s to low 80s. on sunday temperatures begin to come down a bit especially near the coast. labor day heat continues with 102 on monday. 68 on the coast. numbers will drop on tuesday. i know a lot of people do not have the ac here. it's really unbearable when it gets so warm. i think the best thing to do

youtube yiusers will notice some changes. you tube is adding its speed up or slow down play back feature on the mobile app. google updated its maps so it's easier to find parking when driving into san francisco and two dozen other cities. maps now find parking garages near a destination and add them to trips. the information includes the walking times as well. now to consumer news. we talk a lot about protecting your kids at home.

they tried to get on the bay bridge today. >> the highway patrol tweeted this photo of a young deer on the onramp. the chp poked fun saying quote this morning our officers stopped a doe for a toll evasion on the bay bridge. she said she usually pays it but today she was a buck short. >> the deer was a young buck. officers say it stopped and looked at them before scrambling back into the woods. there's this. people in ireland are known for their friendliness. now a seal getting in on the act. >> the irish coast guard posted this. it shows a super friendly seal waving hello to a crew in dublin. they were conducting a training exercise when it spotted the seal and couldn't resist waving back. how cute is that? >> very cute. >> do you have any food? what you got? >> i'm going to guess the latter. world news is next.
