earlier today, north korea's state-run news agency said the country has developed an advanced thermonuclear hydrogen bomb. these are the photos of kim jong un inspecting what's said to be the bomb. tonight, south korea's defense ministry said the tremors were man made and believes it was triggered by a nuclear test. good evening. i'm eric thomas. now to our other top story, the weather. >> would you want to throw a hammer in 110 degree weather? probably not. today's triple digit heat had people flocking to the shade in san francisco, swarming to the coast and jumping normally into ice cold water. as the heat wave goes on, you may also have a hard time finding a fan anytime soon. >> and a live look right now out over san francisco where it's currently 83 degrees. when the sun comes up tomorrow, will we see a third straight day

of record heat? and also i would like to introduce you to somebody who had a hard time finding a fan today. >> thank you. i should know better as a meet rolgt, but i went to bed, bath and beyond and they were completely sold out yesterday. now today records were shattered once again. all-time record highs. it was a repeat of yesterday. 106, tying the record we set yesterday, as well as sfo, 104. salinas airport hit 109 degrees today. beating the record of 105 set in 1987. in addition to that, many record highs for the month of september were broken. we basically tied the one in santa rosa and in oakland because this happened yesterday as well. another repeat in santa rosa. 111 set all the way back in 1932. live shot here in santa cruz.

water was too cold for swimming, not so this saturday. >> it was really refreshing. >> was it cold? >> no. >> that's rare. >> visitors enjoyed every last drop of an unusually hot, gorgeous september saturday. in san francisco, lonni rivera, abc 7 news. a fremont nursing home resorted to a backup generator because of the a power outage that left them in the dark today. residents of windsor park skilled nursing facilitatecy said generators provided some but not a lot relief from the extreme weather. families worried about their loved ones say it wasn't enough to ease worries about the heat's impact. inland where we typically expect triple digit numbers, the heat impacted businesses, events and emergency staffing levels. abc 7 news reporter joins us live from pleasanton with more.

how hot is it there? >> it is now 11:06 and 92 degrees out here. about 20 degrees cooler than earlier, but there is zero wind, which means it's the kind of heat that hangs on you and impacts everything that you do. at the scottish highlands gathering at the alameda fairgrounds, traditional garb is causing problems. >> the discomfort starts to go away. you become used to it. but then you start becoming dizzy. >> this year's attendance numbers are extremely low, half of what they were last year when about 40,000 were here. organizers say this is the hottest it's been in a quarter century. and so they've added misting stations. >> we've had about 1 or 15 heat-related calls and theimiym

dizziness, vomiting. >> reporter: calls for help all over the country have increased. >> we're getting a lot more medicals, heat-related medicals. >> at the alameda county fire department, the worry is twofold. there's the heat and the increased fire danger. a hydration unit will now follow crewing this weekend. extra rigs will be available and staffing is up. until there's a significant cooldown, the department won't risk offering help to agent agencies outside of the county. scorching heat in petaluma did not keep this sign spinner from trying to get business.

temperatures hit 109 in sonoma county. a live look right now from burning man in nevada where believe it or not, temperatures were actually cooler today than they were in san francisco. the high in the black rock desert topped out at 98 degrees. as we mentioned, in san francisco today, 102. the russians were not happy that the trump administration kicked them out of the san francisco consulate as well as two other facilities. russian leaders told a u.s. diplomat in moscow the searches could be used to plant compromising objects. the state department said it's following law and allowed russian embassy personnel to walk through with its agents.

abc news was outside the consulate to see an agent from the bureau diplomatic security keeping a watch over the former consulate building. russia has promise to reciprocate for what it called gross violations. >> a new video released shows a man attacking an asian woman in san francisco. police hope it will help lead them to other victims. this is video of one of those attacks. you see a man throwing a woman to the ground then walking away, turning, coming back and striking her. garcia has been arrested and faces a hate crime and attempteds kidnapping charges police say every attack has been unprovoked. much more ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00. developing news tonight to our north. a wildfire breaks out near a popular hiking trail near portland and tonight crews are searching for missing hikers.

near portland, oregon, a massive wildfire is burning near the columbia river. at least 140 hikers have been trapped by the flames in the columbia river gorge. all night, helicopters have been air lifting them to safety. heavy fire was seen along popular hiking trails along the pacific crest trail. tonight, the fire burning near

the city of los angeles is now the largest it has ever seen at 5,000 acres. a live look right now over l.a. these are the hills near burbank, completely up in flames. shifting winds are making the la tuna fire unpredictable. it's now 10% contain the. abc news reporter alex stone has more. >> reporter: a massive cloud hangs over los angeles. the air clogged with smoke is a fire known as the la tuna wildfire rages on in the hillsides. overnight, the flames reached burbank. firefighters evacuated hundreds of homes. fighting from the air and standing guard at the end of neighborhood streets as people rushed in and ott of their houses taking whatever they could load into cars. >> all it takes is just a little bit of wind and that's it. >> this is nothing to fool around with. if you're familiar with fire and wind, it's a lousy combination. >> i want to thank toez people who have evacuated. the folks who leave their homes, we have police assets who will

span of the bay bridge began today with a bang. two of the original marine piers were successfully imploded this morning. the demolition caused a brief traffic slowdown. caltran said monitoring of marine and wildlife showed no significant impact. >> the efforts we take to make sure there are flot wildlife, also mammals and por popoises. the operation of stopping traffic was very temporary. >> drivers can expect rolling delays and a closure of the bike and pedestrian path during demolition times. >> i would like to revisit something i said a few minutes ago. yes, it was hotter in san francisco again today than it has been at burning man. what sense does that make? >> we broke so many records.

tomorrow, temperatures are going to be cooler. so we are going to be trending downwards. and that is good news for everybody who wants some relief. here's a look at live doppler 7. you notice increasing clouds. that's going to impact our weather, especially over the next couple of days. so cooling in store for us. right now, temperatures finally in the 80s in san francisco. the coolest spot is half moon bay at 68 degrees. we're still seeing a lot of upper 80s out there like livermore and brentwood. still 87 degrees. here's a live shot. santa cruz beach boardwalk. that was a great place to head today. although it hit 107 as well. temperatures really tumble midweek. the heat continues for another day. the areas in orange, along the

coast and around the bay, temperatures will be in the 80s and 90s. so there's a heat advisory in place. then areas of the brighter pink and red, that's the excessive heat warning in some of the higher elevations and also in the inland east bay valleys. highs will be in the 90s all the way up to 108 degrees in some isolated spots. so it's another hot one. but it is cooler compared to today. so the air quality for tomorrow, not great. in fact, it's poor for everyone. even unhelpful for the eastland bay areas. still hazy in san jose right now. so there is another spare the air alert tomorrow. you really just can't cool down at all. we're not getting a break tonight. temperatures in the 60s and 70s. so even in san francisco, we really struggle to drop les even this morning, only hit about 74. you try to open windows overnight and you might manage to cool things off a little bit in your house. tomorrow should be a little bit

a u.s. astronaut is back on earth after 288 straight days in space. peggy woodson landed earlier this evening along with american jack fisher and a russian astronaut. woodson spent 665 cumulative days in space. she's also the first female international space station commander and spent a record 60 hours doing space walks. well, 35 years ago this week, a high school student registered a copy wright fright for a computm called e-mail. since then, it's become an essential part of all of our lives. the problem it's become for many people and the bay area entrepreneurs aiming to fix it. >> you've got mail. >> long before we knew that sound, a teenage boy from new jersey got a copyright for e-mail. >> e-mail was supposed to be this delightful product when it first came out.
