great weekend. now we're back monday and talking about a cooling trend that starts today, even more so than what we had yesterday in some neighborhoods. calm conditions this morning, you can see on live doppler 7. pretty he'sy. another day of poor air quality. all neighborhoods have poor air quality right now. let's go through your 12-hour day planner. 61 to 67 are the temperatures at the coast. we should make it to the low 70s between noon and 4:00. 80s around the bay, and upper 80s to low 90s inland. so there you go. the 100s are gone. how about we get rid of those 90s? i'll show you that coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. here's alexis. >> taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. nice and empty this morning. just a few cars coming through. no metering lights. in fact, i would be very surprised if they flipped those on this morning with the holiday light volumes. so that gives you an idea of just how few people are on the roads this morning. drive times illustrating that as well. westbound 580 across the richmond-san rafael bridge, wide

open at 7 minutes. 13, westbound 92 across the san mateo bridge, and westbound 84 looks great as well in the green at nine minutes. hearing about a new collision on the peninsula. it sounds pretty minor but we'll check on that next. >> thanks, alexis. it's the decision dreamers have been dreading. president trump is expected to announce he's ending the program that protects undocumented immigrants who were brought here as schirn from deportation. >> the program, of course, is daca, which stands for deferred action for childhood arrivals. the decision to end daca means so-called dreamers would no longer be allowed to work legally and in certain states apply for a driver's license. matthew dowd says he thinks president trump is in a difficult situation. >> country instead of looking for a commander in chief in this moment is looking for a chief of compassion in this. and that program obviously affects 800,000 people. he has kicked the can down the roa. he looks like he's going to give to the congress. the president is in a difficult body. he promised his base one thing, but i thin he knows the country wants something else today.

>> the president wants to end daca in six months. a delay to give congress time to consider its own legislation. his official decision will likely come tomorrow. developing news out of houston where flooding after harvey leads to more problems for the city. experts say sewage and chemicals in the water pose a danger to people's safety. houston has a history of sewer overflows after big storms. now it faces an unprecedented challenge. 40 waste water plants across the city. >> the bay area helping more victims of hurricane harvey. a few dozen pets now here looking for new homes. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield joins us live with more. kno good morning, amy. >> reporter: natasha, these animals traveled here in style. take a look. charlie's acres of sonoma provided a private jet to get the animals here to the bay area from houston. there are 50 dogs and 20 cats. they'll go to the san francisco spca and a few other shelters here in the bay area. these animals weren't stranded

because of the storm but moving them here will help animals who were storm victims. >> really thrilled to be able to help with this effort as so many people have been affected by this devastating disaster. we know one of the most important things is people be reunited with their pets. >> so these animals were already in the shelter when the storm hit. they're going to move them out to make room for animals who were stranded by the storm. they want to keep them local in the hopes they'll be reunited with their humans and they'll find each other in houston. these guys will now have a life here in the bay area. they will be available for adoption hopefully by the end of this week. they'll be putting them up on the spca website so you can get a look at them and keep up with when exactly they will be available. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. this morning, china is criticizing president trump's threat to cut off u.s. trade with countries that deal with north korea. >> this comes after north

korea's sixth most powerful nuclear test this weekend. the threat was seen as a warning to china which is north korea's main atrading partner and only major ally. china says the threat is unacceptable and unfair. north korean state television reported the test as a hydrogen bomb that could be mounted on an intercontinental ballistic missile. >> we're getting a rare look at technology and weapons ready to save american lives. this is america's final shield, the last and only protection against an incoming north korean nuclear missile. it's housed deep underground in the heart of alaskan wilderness. there are 38 ground based missile interceptors. the interceptor kills the incoming nuclear weapon outside of the earth's atmosphere. >> as the alarms go off, what you see are the white shells you see behind us would separate extremely quickly and then immediately, you would see a flash of flame as that gbi would leave the tube at a really incredible rate of speed. >> an alaskan senator says these

interceptors are america's best shot as a last defense despite a 60% success rate. as he passed the baton in january, former president obama offered accolades and advice in a private letter. cnn published the letter yesterday. president obama wrote president trump the office is unique, without a clear blueprint for success. one part of the letser notable. it reads american leadership in this world really is indispensable. it's up to us to sustain the international order. >> arson investigators are looking for clues following a suspicious fire at a school in san jose. abc7 was at anderson elementary school following yesterday afternoon's fire. the flames damaged a snack bar and a storage shed used by the santa teresa little league. >> drivers on highway 37 may need to pay a toll up to $7 in the future. major flooding damaged the highway last winter and a consultant hired to study flood

what's going on temperature wise. up to 11 degrees cooler this morning, but let me caution you, if you have the windows closed and you're thing about opening them, all of us, every single area of the bay area, if you will, unhealthy air. right now. i have not seen this all red in more than a decade. i mean, that is just incredible. it's not because of ozone. what we usually associate with summertime.

it's because of the smoke in the air, the fine particulate matter. mid to upper 60s on most neighborhoods in the peninsula. 70 right now as you look at belmont and redwood city. across the bay, upper 66 on the east bay shore. 74 in san jose. low to mid 70s in the east bay valleys. 63 in napa to about 71 in san rafael. 67 in san francisco. let's talk about going to the beaches today. your activity planner, a little breezy. a little breezy around the bay, and spare the air if you're out at the pool like that lady. if you're traveling around the state today, mid to upper 90s through the central valley. thunderstorms possible in tahoe and yosemite. even we have a slight chance of a thunderstorm. i'll talk more about that next. >> we have the first issue we have had in over an hour here on the roads this morning. and it's not a blocking situation. but it is a rollover crash. northbound 101, just north of state route 92 in the san mateo area, a vehicle flipped over. it's not on the roadway. it landed on the right-hand shoulder, and it sound like that's at a 45-degree angle.

not sure about injuries yet. they did dispatch an ambulance to the scene and chp just arriving as well. check out how empty it is in the south bay. northbound 101, just a few vehicles coming towards us here at 880. the one thing i can point out on this camera, look at the smoke and haze. poor air quality. you want the windows rolled up and ac on. we'll check on drive times next. and we continue to follow breaking news from the royal family. a third royal baby on the way. and just like the others, princess kate experiencing some pretty bad morning sickness. so the couple had to make another pretty early announcement just like with prince george and princess charlotte. those pregnancies also announced when kate was only a few weeks pregnant. this is a big week for the royal family. prince george going to start school, and many people expecting his parents to take him. now we'll have to wait and see if kate will be well enough. she has already canceled two

german weapons experts diffused a world war ii buried in the streets of frankfurt. that included hospitals, banks and nursing homes that had to be evacuated. the bomb was found buried at a construction site. experts say if the bomb went off, it could have flattened an entire street. >> happening today, some of california ps best cyclists will spend day laboring around the streets of san francisco. the 43rd annual race will get under way in a couple hours. it will partially close some streets. hundreds of cyclists of all ages are taking part. the event includes ten races. the first starts at 8:00 this morning and the final pro race will pedal off at 3:00. >> you're about to meet a special young man, his name is shea, and he happens to be a huge giants fan. >> 12 years old, he lives in hawaii. he has cerebral palsy, but he loves babel so much, nothing can

i don't use that word very often. it's dirty, unhealthy for all of us right now. we do have a chance of storms, which would be fantastic. that would help clean the air out a little bit, but unfortunately, it's a very, very small chance. tonight, mainly cloudy. that will keep our temperatures aonce again. and a slow cooling trend through my accuweather seven-day forecast. you can see, you saw the stuff that happened in santa barbara yesterday on social media or here on today. a microburst there. that same energy is coming our way. right now, we're dry from 3,000, 4,000 feet. that's not a very big layer to be dry. if something develops or pushes up toward us, there's a good chance we'll fee sprinkles or showers. we're not under a fire danger right now. mid to upper yathsz in the south bay. morgan hill and gilroy, 90s there. low to mid 80s on the peninsula. low to mid 70s along the coast into downtown san francisco. low to mid 80s in the north bay valleys. how about low to mid 80s along

the east bay shore, and our warmest temperatures inland, low to mid 90s. the 100s, they're gone. all right, 60s for most of us again tonight. 70s in the south bay, and the inland east bay neighborhoods. you can see it is slow, but by the time we get to thursday and friday and saturday, temperatures a little below average. hey, alexis. >> that's going to be a huge relief for everybody, mike. taking a look at the roads this morning, one new really minor issue has popped up. that is about it here. we have nobody on the roads today. southbound 101, we have a two-vehicle collision. sounds like someone rear ended another vehicle, and that vehicle went off the roadway into the bushes. but i don't think it sounds very serious. i think everybody is okay. again, no lanes are blocked. this is just off on the right-hand shoulder. a quick check outside. golden gate bridge. southbound 101, extremely light from the north bay. look at the smoke and haze. really poor air quality today. a spare the air day. if you can, carpool or use mass transit. southbound 680, wide open, 16

"d" jen ashton is here to break it down. they make cute kids. i say they keep reproducing, guys. >> we want the biggest family possible. we're such fans. thanks so much. >> have a good day. >> now to an abc news exclusive interview. for the first time, hearing from a survivor of a mass shooting targeted republicans at a congressional baseball practice back in june. matt mika was one of four people shot. the attack also wounded steve scalise. mika is opening up about the terrifying moments on this virginia baseball field. >> i could see his eyes and the gun, but that was it. after that, i was like i have to get out of here. >> two clipped pieces. this is the first place he shot through. the incident took six minutes, according to the police reports. >> how long did it feel? >> it felt like 30, 40 minutes. time stopped, just stopped. >> mika is still undergoing

trump's decision to end daca is like a punch to the stomach. since 2012, the dreamers or young undocumented immigrants who came to the united states as children have been protected from deportation. they can work legally and in some states get a driver's license. president trump is expected to resund their protected status with an announcement tomorrow. he wants to end daca, which stands for deferred action for childhood arrives in six months. abc7 spoke to a woman with daca status who holds a masters degree from san jose state. she says her family relies on her ability to work legally. >> i don't understand why trump is picking a fight with kids. you know, who were brought here without even their understanding of what's happening. and he takes the only thing that gives us hope in this country. >> she is just one of about

24,000 dreamers living in santa clara county. supervisor dave cortesy says he and his colleagues are willing to pursue all legal avenues to protect them. tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> thank you. this morning, the u.n. security council will hold an emergency meeting to discuss international response to north korea's latest nuclear test. the test is said to have been a hydrogen bomb that could be mounted on an intercontinental ballistic missile. north korean state television reports it was, quote, a perfect success. when asked if the u.s. will attack north korea, president trump responded with, we'll see. james mattis was more direct in what could be in store for north korea amid rising tensions. >> any threat to the united states or its territories including guam or our allies will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming. >> treasury secretary steve mnuchin says north korea needs to be cut off economically. >> hey, guys.

on a very related note, i have an update on that story. all of those threats don't seem poobe changing the mind of the north korean leader. right now, south korea reporting that north korea is getting ready for more missile launches, although details on when those may be are very scarce and in light of that, today, the south has been testing their own military response. this video you see here at my large computer, that's what that is, the new tests that were being conducted. missiles launched into the sea by the south. i will be watching for any more updates. >> of course, the situation in north korea is a global concern. this morning, the bricks countries are meeting. it stands for brazil, russia, india, china, and south africa. vladimir putin says putting too much pressure on north korea is, quote, a dead end road. russia says the u.s. and north korea should continue talking. the u.s. and south korea are exploring military options. >> we're tracking developing news out of texas. governor greg abbott says harvey's storm damage could reach up to $180 billion. this week, congress is expected

to approve nearly $8 billion in federal aid to help storm victims but it may need to raise the debt ceiling to do it. many disaster zones are still under water. government officials hope the city will be back on track after labor day. >> to see the level of commercial activity, the people traveling around and what was going on and the number of people who were working to rebuild, texas is mending quickly -- texas and houston are mending quickly. >> harvey is blamed for at least 44 deaths. thousands of people remain in shelters. >> well, of course, you may know the owner of a furniture retail chain opened his doors for harvey victims. mattress mack turns two gallery showrooms into evacuation shelters. now, they're petitioning to designate august 26th as mattress mack day in houston. here's a look at the petition. 196,000 supporters on their way to reach 200,000 signatures. well, our day of giving

event for harvey has wrapped up, you can still donate by calling 1-855-999-give or online. and a big thank you to everyone who has already donated. the drive raised more than $14 million. >> developing news out of san francisco. police are investigating a shooting that left a young person injured. happened around 7:30 last night near treat avenue and 26th street. a juvenile was hurt. their condition is unclear, but ploes say that person is expected to survive. no word yet on what led up to the shooting. happening today, hundreds of oaklands workers will march in support of higher wages on this labor day strike. they plan to rally at 9:00 this morning at the mcdonald's on jackson street and march through downtown oakland. workers are demanding union rights and to be paid $15 an hour. right now, the minimum wage in oakland is $12.86. the wage will gradually increase to $15 by the year 2022. >> on to developing news in

sonoma county where the hunt is on for an arsonist after six different fires broke out. you're looking at one of the fires along stony point road in santa rosa. the flames destroyed a barn and at least one car there. witnesses say the fire started after someone threw objects from a moving car. investigators believe those items may have been fireworks. san mateo county residents might start seeing new surveillance camera in the next few months. media partner the mercury news reports a neighborhood security start-up based in atlanta plans to install its cameras in hillsborough. it keeps track of who comes and goes by logging license plates. it gives police information on cars if a crime happens in the area. cameras are free, but they charge $25 to $50 a home per year for its service. >> the bay area is looking forward to cooler temperatures after this weekend's record-setting heat wave. >> yesterday, petaluma firefighter husband to break a car window to save a child who had locked herself inside. people flocked to swimming pools

in concord where it hit 106 degrees. a group of 10-year-old girls say ice cream and movies is the solution. >> i have stayed at home and watched movies in the ac. >> if i could just have a fruit gatorade popsicle, that would be great. >> they're cute. fire officials do have a warning for people firing up the grill on this labor day. be careful because the risk of combustion increases with these high temperatures. >> bay area residents found many ways to beat the heat. abc7 news was in menlo park where people lined up waiting for the public library to open. it is also a cooling center. menlo park, stanford park hospital told us 60% of this weekend's guests are locals. they came craving air conditioning and coveting access to the hotel's pool. >> no one in sausalito has air conditioning because we just open our windows and the fog rolls in. so we just weren't used to it. >> in redwood city, kayakers

found a way to get in exercise while trying to catch a breeze or two on the bay. >> yeah, the wife would ask me to do something inside the house, yeah, i'll do it, absolutely. just don't send me outside to do chores on a weekend like that. even today, not all that great. look at the weather window i opened from sutro tower. yeah, that's just nasty. and it really is nasty. that's pollution from the fires, all of us have unhealthy air. tomorrow, the winds will start changing. the air will become a little clo cleaner and the cooling trend will continue. until then, the most oppressive heat is over, but we still have poor air quality. it's 70 in belmont. everybody else in the mid tuper 60s no matter if you're on the bay side or ocean side of the peninsula. pretty much upper 60s to low 70sarve where. 74 in san jose to 63 in napa is our spread. here's a look at the golden gate

>> reporter: hi, natasha. yeah, they got here last night. we have video of their arrival and their first moments here in the bay area. these animals were already in the shelters in houston when the storms hit. they now need room in the shelters for the pets who were separated from their owners during the storm. and they want to keep those animals local with the hopes that they will be reunited with their human family. the bay area said we will take them. >> actually bringing in about 70 animals, 50 dogs and 20 cats and we'll be taking some of them here and others are going to our partner muttville, senior dog rescue. oh, my goodness. and the milo foundation as well as mad dog rescue. they're helping in this effort as well. >> well, these little guys will be available for adoption at the end of this week. that's when they're predicting they'll have them red. they'll be featured on the san francisco spca website once they're ready for adoption. you can look them over and also

keep track of when they will officially be available. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> hope they have good homes here. thank you. a man died after running into the fire during one of the signature moments of burning man. you're looking at video that was streamed from the nevada desert showing saturday night's burning of the massive effigy. witnesses say aaron mitchell machked to break through two lines of security guards to reach that inferno. the 41-year-old died after being flown to a burn center in sacramento. festival organizers offered emotional support counseling to those affected by the tragedy. take a look at this crazy sight in santa barbara. a quick hitting storm called a microburst rolled through the city around 3:00 in the afternoon. it flooded roads, sent umbrellas flying and overturned boats. 56 people were tossed into the water. thankfully, no reports of injuries. getting news, crews are trying to contain a fire that

broke out in gilroy. cell phone video shows the flames just after 7:15 last night. fire has burned at least 40 acres so far. no injuries have been reported. fire officials do not have an estimated time of containment. >> firefighters are making progress on the largest fire in l.a. county's history. this morning, some evacuees are allowed to return home to their neighborhoods. the l.a. fire department says the fire was 30% contained as of 8:00 last night. it's burned more than 7,000 acres and destroyed three buildings. cooler temperatures today should help in the fight. and firefighters in northern california are getting a big boost from a big plane. the world ffs newest and largest air tanker. the global supertanker is parked at mcclellan field in sacramento county. formerly a commercial boeing 747, it brings a payload nearly twice as much as any other air tanker. it tackled its first mission in the u.s. earlier this week. the ponderosa fire near oroville, as fires continue to
