heat and dry conditions fuel a fire burning in south santa clara county as nervous residents deal with the smoke and ash. thanks for joining us. i'm matt keller. kristein sze is off today. a firefighter was also hurt overnight after falling 40 feet down a hillside. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson joins us live from gilroy with what's happening now. gilroy? >> matt, the fire is about is hundred acres, and it's currently zero percent contained. so far no homes are threatened. one firefighter did suffer minor

injuries. he was treated and released. gilroy's fire chief says with the extremely difficult terrain they are fortunate more firefighters have not been injured. smoke chokes the gilroy hills as neighbors look on with concern. >> we're just hoping that the wind doesn't blow this way. >> reporter: neal lives at a house at the base of the ridge and has been watching the fire since it started last night. >> you can see the flames billowing up. >> reporter: he's attempted to hike up the hills where the fire burns. >> it's treacherous. >> reporter: last night a firefighter lost his footing and fell about 40 feet down the steep terrain. >> a firefighter tumbled down the 0-froot drop and he was taken to the hospital and released. these hillsides haven't burned before so they are incredibly dense with trees, brush and dry grass. >> a lot of fuel. >> reporter: today cal fire is attacking the fire by air. they have the best access to the hard-to-reach burn area.

resources are stretched as firefighters battle numerous fires around california. >> resources are drawn down to critical levels. i do not have an answer on whether we'll get any additional aircraft at this time. >> reporter: the air quality and visibility are bad but so far no word on whether there's a shelter in place horde. >> we'll see how the fire goes. >> about 100 firefighters are on the scene and some working overtime to get the fire out. there's a helicopter and just within the past hour an air tanker and spotter plane arrived here to put out the fire. live in gill roi. tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> the firefighters are getting help today from mother nature. a light rain fell in the burn area two hours ago. this is video from the news crew there. you can see the rain dotting the lens with the fire truck in the background. mike nicco is tracking the chance of rain. >> we have a small chance of not

a washout or widespread rain but it's scattered sprinkles, too, and an outside chance of a thunderstorm. you can see south of the dunbarton returns there's radar showing up of what's left of lydia continues to rotate towards us. the next chance continues to move northwest. you can see the high resolution computer models there. there's yellows and orange and the air is really dry, below 10,000 feet so anything heavy is not going to happy. i'd be surprised if we get anything measurable above .01 of an inch or .02. what we'll talk about later is the heat breaking, and the air is unhealthy everywhere in the bay area so we could use the rain. i don't think it's what we need and i can tell you when we come back. >> thank you, mike. new this morning, firefighters in pleasant hill say hot

temperatures may helped fuel a condominium complex fire on southwind drive near fernwood. investigators are looking into reports that a propane tank blew. six different fires have broken out and firefighters are looking at one of the fires on stoney point row in santa rosa. that fire broke out around 5:00 yesterday evening. witnesses say the fire started after someone threw object from a moving car. investigators believe those items may have been fireworks. happening now, hundreds of workers in oakland are rallying for union rights saying there's more to do for economic justice. amy hollyfield joins us live in oakland at frankie gallup plaza. >> the rally is going on right now here in the plaza. it started about 20 minutes ago. very full and peaceful none administration and they marched here from an oakland mcdonald's

and that's where they started their message and continued it here. they say fast food workers deserve a wage so they can afford to live in the bay area. it's become an annual rally cry. the labor day demonstration in front of mcdonald's at 14th and jackson in oakland where fast food workers are fighting for a minimum pay of $15 an hour and representation. >> i need the $15 but i also need the union because having the union they cannot cut down my days or hours and i'll have to fight for my rights and the right of others, of my co-workers. >> reporter: california has approved a $15 minimum wage to gradually be in place by the year 2023. union organizers call that a success and say it's still important to be here each year. >> $15 in the bay area is nothing, and we're not only asking for $15 here in california, we're not going to stop until every single state of this country gives us $15 in

jessica castro is here with more on case and a new interview. >> the combative arrest was caught on another officer's body camera and has sparked national outrage. the utah nurse was being seen dragged and handcuffed. she's sharing her part of the story. >> i was scared to death. >> salt lake city police are apologizing for the violent arrest of a hospital nurse. the whole thing caught on body margarethe cammermeyer raft. she was detained after refusing to draw blood samples from a unconscious patient. >> i can't speak for officer payne. but what i can say is i stood my ground. i stood for what was right which was to protect the patient. as a nurse, any nurse would have done exactly what i did. >> the nurse was following hospital policy and constitutional law. the patient who was not a suspect had not given consent.

jeff payne and one other officer are on criminal leave bending an investigation. >> as a nurse it's my job to assess a situation, to assess a patience and my assessment skills he had me to believe officer payne was o.j. dated and had already stormed off in disapproval when i originally told him he couldn't do this on the unit. she's disappointed by both the university of you a it a police and the department of public safety which provides security for the hospital. >> i really feel betrayed by the police officers. i feel betrayed by my university police and security. >> on friday salt lake city's mayor and police chief apologized after the incident saying what was seen was completely unacceptable. she's not ruled out the possibility. i'm jessica castro, abc 7 news. >> still to come, a labor day

for all of us, not most susceptible and the air is unhealthy for all of us. it's dirty. if you can hear the raspiness in my voice because i'm the dumb one who drove to work with the sun roof open instead of the air conditioner. don't be like mike. we'll barely get into the 100s. still will stay in the mid-60s to 70s and we'll see the temperatures slowly cole back to average. look at walnut creek. hard to get to 91 when you can't see the sunshine through the smoke. that's out there. temperatures drop from the 80s, 80s to 100s to the 70s and 82 as and barely 90s today. we'll start to see a little bit of a clearing due to the sea breeze and the area you see in yellow in along the coast at about 1:00. this is coming out of the south so it will be a hazy wind and

will still have humidity. it's not going to be a clear dry wind like out of northwest. temperatures right now. you can see 70s and 80s and it's the dew point, up in the muggy levels and 60s in some areas. we won't get to the 80s because it's oppressive and definitely different out there by our standards. 85 to 91 and 81 to 86 on the peninsula. 71 to 14 on the coast and 76 in downtown san francisco. up to the north bay and 90s possible a little farther north with a little more sunshine. 80 to 84 until you get to castro valley, and if we're lucky we may get to 90 to 1 about. the air is still hat at least by average standards. going to the game this afternoon. poor air quality out there. hazy and temperatures in the upper
