the mother of two who mysteriously vanished just before hurricane harvey and now the investigation. did someone use the storm to cover up a crime? and reunited. thousands of pets displaced in houston, the families desperately trying to get them back. michael is there for an emotional reunion, how to keep your animal safe as hurricane irma approaches. we do say good morning, america, and a lot of news to get to on this wednesday morning. we're getting our first look at hurricane irma hitting the caribbean islands right now. one of the most powerful storms ever in the atlantic. >> and we want to show you the image of the hurricane from space right now. there it is, it shows the eye of this now category 5 storm. it is moving toward puerto rico right now then florida, states of emergency are already declared and some cities have ordered mandatory evacuations. officials call this a worst case scenario for the florida keys. >> as you can imagine the lines are growing in florida to get gas and many of those stations,

unfortunately, are sold out. people are desperate to stock up and hit the road and that's the highway out of the keys right now. they're getting out of there. >> only one road out of the keys. our team is spread out across the storm's path, from puerto rico to florida, and our chief meteorologist ginger zee is tracking all the latest. good morning, ginger. >> george, we're seeing the unfortunate images flood in from hurricane irma, hitting st. martin. that's a category 5 eyewall looks like. then boats and cars flooding. debris everywhere. these are the first images as we go through out the days. it will pass north of puerto rico. it looks like it will stay a category 5. turks and caicos could see 14 to 15 storm surges.

through friday, into saturday, southern bahamas get into the risk area. as we take the right right up through southern florida, the keys there, especially the eastern keys, miami, ft. lauderdale will see some significant storm surge. we'll talk about inland flooding, rainfall, wind and surge. we got to go to puerto rico and where our linzie janis is stationed. linzie. >> reporter: good morning, local media warning people not to be fooled by this reliv start to the day. the life-threatening winds and rain are on the way and the governor here warning the impact could be catastrophic, but right now, irma is ripping through the island of st. martin with terrifying force. this morning, winds, rain and

hurricane irma bears down on the caribbean. the category 5 storm packing 185-mile-per-hour winds and destroying at least four government buildings. flooding streets, submerging cars and boats. this satellite image shows the sheer density of the storm. irma decimating the island of barbuda and now hitting the tourist favorite st. martin. the government there telling people not to go outside under any circumstance. >> we're on the sixth floor. so the flooding is kind of amazing. because the wind is bringing it through the doors. >> reporter: they're holed up on the sixth floor of a villa. the water rapidly rising. >> we're literally inside, three doorways in and this is what you can hear. >> newlyweds scott and sara riggans are spending their honeymoon locked in that hotel bathroom.

>> we've got the wind going about 100 miles per hour. we can really hear it outside shaking the doors. we have some water coming through our front door. >> reporter: the national hurricane center calling irma potentially catastrophic. here in puerto rico, an island that experts say hasn't seen a storm of this magnitude in 100 years, an evacuation order under way in parts. windows boarded up. shelves bare. people loading up and hunkering down. irma is expected to next hit the u.s. and british virgin islands this afternoon. it arrives here in puerto rico later tonight. again, everybody being told to take this very seriously. robin. >> that they are. okay, linzie. now to the florida keys where they're starting mandatory evacuations. the chain of islands at the southern tip of the state is home to 80,000 residents and a destination for thousands of tourists and abc's gio benitez is there on the only road in and out of the keys. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, robin, good morning to you.

you said it, there are mandatory evacuations for visitors in place right now started at sunrise. i want you to take a look at this, because this is the reason why those evacuations are already in place. you see all this water here. we are at the water's edge. but walk with me because i want to show you this. we are also at the road's edge. this is the overseas highway right here. you can see people already getting out of here. this is the only way in, the only way out of the florida keys, and so this actually floods because on the other side of this you have water too. i want you to take a look at some video shot earlier. this is a bird's-eye view of this overseas highway. there is a reason why it's called the overseas highway. you have got water on both sides. i've seen storms come through here far less powerful than irma and they have flooded this place. it becomes very difficult to do anything then because now you're talking about only traveling in boats. so it is a very serious situation if this becomes flooded, robin. >> key west, of course, has an

airport, gio, but flights there have been canceled beginning tomorrow morning. the storm is not hitting until this weekend. so why so early and are people concerned that's -- that may be the way people wanted to evacuate. >> reporter: that's right. you know, they're actually closing it tonight after that last flight out 5:50 p.m. takes you to atlanta. that's the last flight out of here. they're doing it early because as you know, residents here in the keys like to stay put. they don't like to leave the keys during storms so what officials are saying is, listen, this is a very strong storm. take it seriously and get out. i imagine that soon we're going to see a mandatory evacuation for residents too, robin. >> all right, gio, thank you. only three category 5 storms -- hurricanes have made landfall in u.s. history. the last andrew in 1992 which prompted florida to make its building code some of the toughest in the nation. those structures could now face their biggest test yet and abc's alex perez is in miami with more on how everyone is getting ready. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. some of these homes right here along the ocean could be the first to get slammed by the

hurricane. officials here in miami-dade say evacuations could be begin as early as this evening. overnight, a run on gas. >> well, the gas lines are crazy. >> reporter: station after station across some of the sunshine state's biggest cities out of fuel. >> they put up caution tape. nobody has any. >> reporter: some drivers sitting in bumper-to-bumper lines, in some cases waiting a half hour or more just to get to the pump. >> if you're at a gas station without fuel there will be fuel coming. >> reporter: and critical supplies also running short as floridians stock up. >> absolutely crazy. the lines wrapped around the entire inside of the store. >> reporter: emptying stores of plywood and water, even filling sandbags. >> it's very important that everybody in our state gets prepared. three days of water per water -- per person and food per person. make sure you're ready. >> reporter: many residents are boarding up their properties with wind speeds expected to hit a powerful 145 miles per hour. here in miami, some of the first

targets -- these beachfront skyscrapers. hurricane andrew flattened parts of southern florida 25 years ago. high-rises here are now designed with some of the strictest building codes in the nation. >> nothing is 100% hurricane-proof. >> the only thing that is 100% hurricane-proof is a bunker but who would live there. >> reporter: balconies and windows a danger zone for flying debris, that threat increasing on the upper levels where the wind can be much more violent. >> any items left curbside as the storm approaches can become harmful projectiles in high winds. >> reporter: and at this point, fuel shipments are still coming in restocking those empty gas stations. officials here are telling tourists who are here on vacation to go home. robin. >> all right, alex, thank you very much. and joining us now from tallahassee is the governor of florida, rick scott. governor scott, thank you very much. i know it's a busy day for you. earlier this week you declared a statewide emergency. what are you most concerned with, sir, at this hour?

>> well, i want every floridian to be as aggressive as we are preparing and i want every floridian to be aggressive. we don't know exactly where this is going to hit. it's likely to hit ft. meyers and naples as is miami and the keys are already evacuating. we're going to have wind, rain and storm surge, this is a massive storm. water could cover your house, so i want everybody to understand the importance of this. this is bigger than andrew. andrew we just had the 25th anniversary. this is bigger than andrew. it will have more storm surge than andrew and it sure looks like it's going to barrel right doide of the state of florida. >> many certainly do remember hurricane andrew and for you to say that really means something. we have heard reports of gas stations running out of fuel. how dire is the situation and what is being done, governor? >> we're working with our retailers for food, water and for gas to make sure that we have all those resources, we're asking everybody in our state to

get a plan. right now we don't believe we have any shortages, but if you're out, if your store is out of water they'll be restocking soon, the same with nonperishable food and same as if you're going to a gas station they're bringing in more gas. we don't see any widespread shortages and we don't believe we'll have them right now. i'm asking everybody, as you get prepared three days of water per person, three days of food. take enough but take only what you need. don't take more. so we make sure we can take care of all of our neighbors. we can rebuild your home. we can't rebuild your life. take care -- prepare and take care of your family. be aggressive. we are at the state level. >> that's great advice there and are you concerned? there are some mandatory evacuations in the keys, others -- voluntary at this moment, are people complying? >> well, as you see right now, people are leaving the keys. we will start to see more evacuations. miami-dade already did their

special needs individuals today and they'll be doing more. so, as we see the storm getting closer, there will be more mandatory evacuations around the state. listen to your locals. listen to them. just remember, this could be an unbelievable storm surge. we're talking about water that could be ten feet, can go over your house, can go further inland. this is way bigger than andrew. andrew was not a big storm surge storm. this could be much worse so, and it's both coast right now right up the middle of the state so everybody has to be prepared. you can't -- you can't rely just on government. everybody has to be prepared. >> good to know how proactive you are being and, of course, you have to prepare for the worst and we are all praying for the best possible outcome. governor rick scott, thank you very much for your time this morning. you take care. >> thank you, robin. have a good day. >> thank you, sir. kept referring to hurricane andrew because he wants people to really take heed because sometimes when you grow up in an area where there's storm after storm after storm. oh, i'm not going to leave this time. this one you don't want to mess with.

>> doesn't seem like anyone is being complacent. let's go back to ginger for more on that florida threat. >> i thought it was so great he was talking about impacts across the state. you could see inland flooding from tampa up to, say, orlando, anywhere throughout the state of florida, even into the carolinas eventually but storm surge, just as the governor was saying, a huge deal. we wanted to give you an idea of what it may look like. storm surge comes from water piling up in and in front of a storm as it approaches land, approaches some of those coastal towns and homes, you see how quickly the water can overtake and actually even move from the foundation some of those homes. all it takes is four to six feet in some cases depending on what the elevation is and we know that miami floods easily. so we just did a worst case scenario here with storm surge to give you an idea of who would be flooded. if you had a three-foot-plus storm surge you'd see those areas in yellow start to go underwater and higher than that we see the areas in red go under. this is a lot of miami beach and it's a lot along the coast and

around those low-lying areas. we'll have details on more impacts and that inland flooding in just a couple of moments. >> thanks very much. president trump says he's watching the hurricane closely. he's issued emergency declarations for florida, puerto rico and the virgin islands, and this afternoon he's going to head to north dakota to push for tax reform. as he faces backlash over his decision to phase out protections for the d.r.e.a.m.ers, the nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants who came to the u.s. as children. a lot of pressure now on congress to step in and save the protections and our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega is in washington with all the fallout from the president's decision. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. fallout across the country. that is what the president is waking up to this morning. he had given congress a six-month deadline to come up with a fix for these d.r.e.a.m.ers but now it seems like he's saying he may not be entirely leaving this up to congress after all. overnight, president trump said he's not done with the d.r.e.a.m.ers just yet. after initially punting to congress to make the next move,

he tweeted, congress now has six months to legalize daca, something the obama administration was unable to do. if they can't, i will revisit this issue. this on the heels of fierce backlash over his plan to rescind protections for those nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to this country as children. protests, from chicago to albuquerque, to right outside the white house. some republicans like lindsey graham saying the president has to do more than push this off on capitol hill. >> my challenge to the president is that you've talked very glowingly about these kids. help us. get involved personally. work the phones. try to find a consensus here. >> reporter: president trump insists he is acting with compassion. >> i have a great heart for the folks we're talking about, a great love for them. >> reporter: but his attorney general struck a much different tone calling them illegal aliens who take american jobs.

>> we cannot admit everyone who would like to come here. it's just that simple. >> reporter: it was enough to bring two former presidents back into the spotlight. president obama called the move to rescind daca cruel, wrong and self-defeating saying ultimately this is about basic decency. president clinton called it irresponsible, passing the buck instead of offering sensible solutions for immigration reform. the message from the white house, there's no guarantee those d.r.e.a.m.ers are safe from deportation. >> the president says that d.r.e.a.m.ers won't be a priority for enforcement but that's not a guarantee of protection. is this white house willing to offer one? >> those are certainly again they're not a targeted priority. but the goal here is that congress actually fixes the problem and then that isn't an issue. >> reporter: leaving people like niella lopez terrified about what comes next. do you envision your life in another country? >> i don't. this is my home since i was 13

years old and, yes, mexico's in my heart too, but this is my home. >> reporter: yeah, among the opponents to this move the u.s. chamber of commerce says rescinding daca is bad for the american economy and is, quote, contrary to fundamental american principles. so now it's up to congress and they've got a full plate on their front burner funding the government and preventing a default, george, immigration reform is not at the top of their list right now. >> and of course, this has been on their agenda for years and, cecilia, you talk about everything else on the congressional agenda right now. on top of that you have the recovery from hurricane harvey, this new hurricane irma is hitting, and the federal disaster fund runs out of money on friday. >> reporter: it does, the clock is ticking. the house will vote today on this relief for harvey, nearly $8 billion package that is expected to go forward there but it could likely hit a roadblock in the senate if this is tied to the debt ceiling, to raising it. >> the big questions about that. they'll meet on that today with the president. cecilia vega, thanks very much. >> hard to hear that knowing what could possibly be happening there in florida.

let's go back to ginger with more on the wind threat for florida. >> hurricane-force winds right now in that hurricane can be felt 50 miles outside the center. we wanted to make sure you understand. when it gets to florida, if it does, with 50 miles and it will stretch longer because as you go north in latitude you will see hurricane-force winds stretch. because this is such a narrow sliver of land. naples to miami only just over 100 miles or so, all over the southern tip on sunday evening. fall-like cities now brought to you by walgreens.

welcome back to "gma." you are looking live at satellite footage of hurricane irma, it's battering the caribbean islands and we have new video coming in, the storm moving into st. thomas now headed toward puerto rico. the waves are already kicking up in san juan, florida, of course, is on alert. experts are saying this category 5 storm could be catastrophic, winds up to 185 miles an hour. we've got some gas lines growing there. you can see that as mandatory evacuations have already been ordered for parts of florida. of course, we are tracking the storm every step of the way. >> and you're going to be heading soon to florida. >> on a flight this afternoon heading to florida. we have to keep our mind, of course, about harvey and following the recovery efforts of harvey. michael is there in houston at a

fairground that's been turned into a makeshift shelter for hundreds of animals. who do you have there, michael? what do have you there, michael? >> hey, robin, hey, you guys, i have a little puppy right here. and you're right, this place is absolutely incredible. it's now home to over hundreds of dogs, cats, there are horses here, there are donkeys here, he-haw and everything. and it's also staffed by hundreds of volunteers to make sure they have everything they need and most of all to try to reconnect them with their owners. yesterday, when we pulled up yesterday to see the facility, we actually saw owners being reunited with their pets. there was a young mother, you could see her right there with her two young kids reunited with their dog and found out their dog was here through social media. the search for a mother of two who vanished a day before harvey hit and police are investigating. amy, you have the story.

>> crystal mcdowell was last seen on august 25th, that was the day before hurricane harvey ravaged south texas and now a lot of people are wondering if the bizarre timing of her disappearance was the perfect storm to cover up a crime. this morning, the desperate search for a houston real estate agent and mother of two who disappeared from houston just hours before hurricane harvey hit. crystal mcdowell posted on facebook stay safe out there the night before she was last seen. according to her boyfriend, paul hargrave, this home security video shows her the next morning heading out of his house and getting into her car on her way to pick up her kids from her ex-husband who lives about 20 minutes away. >> she did send me some text messages basically that the roads were clear, of what to do in preparation of the storm. >> reporter: hargrave showed us his last text message exchange. with mcdowell. her last text message to hargrave was, and you are so sweet. the 38-year-old's black mercedes was found about 13 miles away from hargrave's home in this flooded motel 6 parking lot three days later. mcdowell is a successful houston

area real estate agent and her youtube page containing videos of her home listings. hargrave said she had been fighting with her ex-husband in the days before her disappearance. >> she wouldn't just get up and leave her kids. she wouldn't. she wouldn't do that so i think something is horribly wrong. >> i think there was probably some animosity between boyfriends and husbands and the husband probably might think the boyfriend had something to do with it and the boyfriend might think the husband had something to do with it. >> reporter: police said they are confident mcdowell is not a victim of the storm but no suspect has been identified. crytal's uncle has raised her since she was 8 years old and is pleading for her return. >> her family wants her back. her children need her. she has a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old and they need her. >> reporter: mcdowell's uncle also confirming that the last he knew she was due to pick up her kids, something she would never

>> why are you doing this? >> you're getting me nervous. >> why are you nervous? you're not supposed to be getting food. what are you doing? why are you going in reverse? >> reporter: and she is justifiably a little mad. >> i'm trusting the dealership that they're going to fix my car and that my car is going to be safe. and nobody is going to take it for a joyride and get burgers. >> reporter: the owner posted this on facebook. >> this is something we do not condone. it is completely against our company policy, and we are conducting a thorough investigation on the technician to make sure that this does not happen again. my apologies on his behalf and on behalf of the dealership. >> reporter: we have seen something like this before. back in april. >> this is going to be fun. >> reporter: an audi owner shocked to find this video on his dash cam after picking his car up. the car's owner posting this video right on the palo alto dealership's website and

the yankees are accusing the red sox of using an apple watch to steal pitching signs. violating mlb rules. now, according to a report, league investigators say they caught the red sox, well, red-handed there, t.j. holmes. >> robin, these two teams have been going at it for 100 years, so the red sox are looking for an advantage but instead of getting a new ace or slugger they just swung by the apple store and now we just have to wait and see how big of a scandal baseball has on its hands. one of the oldest rivalries in all of sports is getting an ios update. the new york yankees have formally accused the boston red sox of cheating with an apple watch. that's right. an apple watch to baseball lore

in the heated century-old yankees/sox rivalry. >> you're using an apple watch from the dugout. okay, so, it's not like you're doing it where somebody wouldn't see it. >> reporter: the league has opened an investigation into sign stealing by the red sox. the practice of deciphering opposing catcher's pitch signals for the purpose of letting your batter know what pitch is coming next. how did they do it? a staff member watching the game on a live feed would relay the opposing catcher's signals directly to the dugout to a trainer on his apple watch. the trainer would then tell the players who then communicated to the batter what pitch was on the way. >> either you're cheating or you're not and these gray areas and splitting these hairs of cheating say, oh, you can cheat this way but you can't be too technological about it. >> reporter: according to "the new york times," when confronted with the accusation the red sox admitted they had been using the system for weeks at fenway park but countered by accusing the yankees of also stealing signals by using a tv camera at yankee stadium.

>> when you have the kind of rivalry that they have i guess it's not shocking you could have charges and countercharges like this. >> reporter: while not admitting guilt, one red sox exec made clear to reporters his view on sign stealing. >> i think sign stealing's been going on in baseball for a long time. do i think it's wrong? no, i don't. >> reporter: another boston team dealt with high-tech cheating allegations in 2007 when the new england patriots were caught videotaping an opposing team's signal. the nfl fined coach bill belichick $500,000 and the team lost draft picks. what is it going to cost them? possibly nothing. they're likely not going to vacate wins. they've had scandals like this before. the commissioner said never in the history of the mlb have they vacated wins. >> the red sox have a counter complaint against them. >> the yankees are saying we're not guilty of anything, but that was their countercomplaint. another way for these two to go at it. >> one team is using secret signs.

are you still taking animals in? >> every day. so best friends animal society came out to support almost -- there's almost a thousand animals have come through and there's more coming in every day. we're working to ensure that they're able to be held for a month to be able to find their owners. and their owners to find them, importantly. it's already been devastating for them. >> yeah, we saw the one owner, young lady yesterday who found her animal through social media so a lot of people can reach out that way. if there are people who are missing a pet, what should they do? >> well, best friends animal society, our website, we have a link to all the missing or found pets from hurricane harvey. >> okay, and for our viewers at home who are preparing for hurricane irma, what should they do to prepare for that and how to keep their animals safe and for a shelter there what should that shelter do. >> so the people just really need to have a plan. know where they'll go. if they need to evacuate listen to authorities and do evacuate. it's easier to evacuate before

first, of course, that breaking news on hurricane irma, category 5 slamming the caribbean. you see the evacuations out of key west right there in florida, state of emergency across the state. and our chief meteorologist ginger zee has new details on irma's track. good morning, ginger. >> good morning. the latest update from the national hurricane center still has the wind speeds max sustained at 185 miles per hour so this thing is blasting over st. martin, st. bart's and several reports of roofs being damaged and major flooding. we'll bring you those as soon as we possibly can. those hurricane warnings in place, puerto rico could see three to five feet of storm surge as that storm passes just to the north. turks and caicos is going to end up on the right or northeast quadrant, that bad side, as is the southern bahamas who are right now in a hurricane watch. watch this track. this is what everybody wants to know. where does it go after friday in the bahamas? well, saturday into sunday, it approaches the keys and sunday into monday, look what the cone includes. almost the entire state of florida. right now the path taking it

directly up. that would be a bad situation through homestead up through miami. up through west palm and ft. lauderdale and that would bring a lot of storm surge and a lot of models are trying to kick it east. this disturbance taking over as the main steering factor. this would be better and better news the farther we could get out. not great as you go to south and north carolina where you see inland flooding threats. so much to track here. we'll be here all morning long. >> all right, ginger, as you just showed us irma going through the northeast caribbean. puerto rico bracing for what could be the strongest storm on record to hit that island. abc's linzie janis is there for us. linzie. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the first effects of hurricane irma have arrived here in puerto rico. we have heavy rain, winds and surf. conditions are expected to deteriorated, the worst expected to come tonight. we have been speaking with some tourists in st. martin.

holly morris and lauren mayo holed up in a villa and they describe it as a freight train going through a building and say the waves and rain so powerful it's coming through the windows and flooding their building. it heads toward the u.s. and british virgin islands and then arrives here in puerto rico later tonight. the governor here has been warning that the impact could be catastrophic. we want to go to the florida keys. evacuations getting under way. gio benitez is there. >> reporter: good morning. we're already getting reports of price gouging. a case of water, 99 bucks, that's just crazy. if you see it, report it right away to authorities. here in the florida keys, you said it, this is the only road in and out of the keys and that's why there's a mandatory

evacuation in place for visitors that are here. they've got to get out of here because you're right next to the water. lots of flooding is possible here. take a look at miami-dade, because over in miami-dade county, officials are advising residents living in low-lying areas to start evacuating today. highway tolls suspended across the state. florida's governor rick scott telling us earlier on "gma" that this is way bigger than hurricane andrew. you remember that from '92 with a much bigger storm surge possible but reassuring residents that stores running low on water and supplies will be restocked. so many stores already running out of water, gas stations out of gas. now, the governor also saying all 7,000 florida national guard members will be ready to take on irma, george. >> thank goodness for that. okay, gio, thanks very much. when we come back, michael is with the heroes of houston. we're going to show neighbors helping neighbors all across that city. and it's "dancing with the stars" day. lara is upstairs for all the excitement. hey there, lara. >> robin, i mean, i feel a little overdressed. we are moments away from revealing the stars about to

[ applause ] guys, we're getting in some information. sounds like the french interior minister saying the four most solid buildings, the government buildings have been destroyed in st. martin so this storm doing some real destruction as it passes over these islands. you can see it headed toward the u.s. and british virgin islands so those are up next. tracking irma throughout the morning but the other storm, katia named this morning. already formed. we talked about it yesterday and right behind irma, jose. jose will eventually take a track and i'll show you it but let's focus on katia.

everybody in southeast texas concerned. that's turning back towards central mexico so, as we go into the weekend, it looks like that moisture keeps pushing away from southeast texas. jose could just graze those northern leeward islands that were hit so hard already this morning as it becomes a hurricane later tonight and likely a category 2 before staying out into the atlantic. so there are some better visions, and i just thought it would be interesting to look if we can go back and this is irma right now. something you have to keep in mind that, as this circulates in the ocean there, it should keep on that west-northwestward track at 16 miles per hour right now, grazing to the north of puerto rico but you will still see significant three to five-foot surge and a lot more as this moves west. good morning, it's back, the marine layer and its cooling effects. humid but light temperatures.

hotspots develop this weekend. temperatures today low 70s along the coast into san francisco, upper 70s to low 80s around the bay, and low to mid-80s in most of our inland neighborhoods. see the green tonight? that's the chance of light showers, temperatures around 61 to 68 degrees. by tomorrow evening, that chance is over. we'll have so let's spend a little time. i know everybody is talking about this. as that category 5 storm stays that way and north of puerto rico as we were just saying north of the dominican republic. you can still see one to two foot, maybe three to five-foot surge. the southern bahamas take a brunt, the turks and caicos do, the timing is saturday through sunday when it starts to approach the florida keys, then sunday into monday when the cone opens up and includes most of florida. now, just because that right side will have some of the strongest winds and some of the strongest storm surge doesn't mean that if you're on the west side of florida that you shouldn't pay attention. because the hurricane-forced winds are already reaching 50 miles out from the center and they could reach even farther as

we go north in latitude so we'll see wind speeds still high for the peninsula of florida. as this heads up south carolina, north carolina, you could see inland flooding too, georgia. all right, robin and george, let's go back to you. >> all right. how do you do that, tom bergeron? how do you do that? >> pretty well. >> i know. 25 seasons of "dancing with the stars." >> yes. hi. good morning. i'm jessica castro from "abc7 mornings." voters in san francisco will decide the fate of a ban on flavored tobacco products. the board of supervisors passed the measure in june, and now opponents have gathered enough signatures to put it on the ballot. they say the measure will harm small retailers who sell tobacco products. supporters say flavored tobacco is heavily marketed to young people and minorities. all right, taking a look at the roads here this morning, we do have a lot of red showing up on our traffic maps as everyone back at school and work this week. and we do have a multicar crash northbound 880 just past whipple, blocking the center lane. so if you are heading up towards the san mateo bridge, we're definitely seeing some delays. once you make it there, it is starting to look better across westbound 92. earlier trouble spot has cleared. dumbarton bridge starting to thin out as well. >> alexis, thank you. >> alexis, thank you. meteorologist you're going to be hanging out in here. so if you need anything, text me.

survive in the wake of hurricane harvey's destruction, others jumping in to take care of one another. >> this place has been nothing but a blessing for me and my kids. >> reporter: i went to windsor village united methodist church in houston where i spoke with the pastor who counseled three presidents and is now focusing his energy on harvey recovery. so how many people do you have here now. >> i think we're down to 21 now? >> and overall how many people have been able to come here and receive some type of help. >> over 2,000 persons and counting. we are a distribution center. you said it, not a warehouse. we receive it to get it to the hearts and hands and folk who need it. >> reporter: the house of worship turning into a house of help. all this is private. this is just the community. these are just people coming together who love their fellow citizens. >> man, it was just humanity at its best in spite of all the desperation and the destruction that has occurred around us, the light of hope has been, is and will continue to be the carrying

community of houston, texas. >> reporter: volunteers stepping up working day in and day out. you're spending 16, 18-hour days. >> 24. >> 24-hour days. you don't have to be a member of the church to come here. just have to be somebody in need. >> we are a village and a village doesn't consist of who is a member but who wants to give and have the same love for what you have a love for. >> reporter: even people displaced lending their time. >> they open their doors for us. and for me i can give back. >> reporter: we bumped into eric preston as he was donating 110 cases of water. >> i made it through the flood. you know, i was fine so i wanted to help out. >> reporter: amanda bennett and nadia eubanks both staying at the church finding new friendships in the face of hardship. >> we lost everything. everything. >> but you know what, at the end of the day you have your kid, your husband.

>> i have my kid and my husband. >> and you got yourself. >> we're going to make it. >> you're going to make it. it's going to be okay. and then walking down the street and i get a tap on my shoulder and it'll be you saying, michael, it's amanda, i made it. that's what i'm looking forward to. all right. hang in there. it will be all right. a little help going a long way. >> just being here in the presence of everybody that's volunteering and the staff here, that's a blessing in itself and they're doing a lot to help us to try to ensure that when the doors are closed that we're not out on the streets. >> and i got to say, guys, as you can see there's so much love, so much humanity here and i have to point out that again windsor united methodist are going strictly off donations, support from the community. you don't have to be a member for them to help out. they're helping out anybody who is in need. it is an incredible place to visit and incredible place to see.

>> yeah, incredible acts of kindness. i understand you have some very special plans today. >> yeah, i get a chance to go over and talk to j.j. watt. everybody knows j.j.'s raised $20 million or more to help out the city of houston doing a lot to give back to the community in which he lives so i'll talk to him and get on a plane and come back to new york and i'm going to be in the studio with you tomorrow to bring that story, as well. >> we're looking forward to that. please give j.j. all our best. doing such a great job down there.
