we're looking at some new video from the u.s. virgin hinds which suffered severe damage from hurricane irma. most of the trees damaged, you can see power poles knocked down. resident spent as much as 12 hours riding out the storm in their basements. the eye is 140 miles from puerto rico. past san juan. the hurricane-force winds can be he felt as far as 50 miles from the storm. turning now to a brazen escape attempt by a shoplifting

have hurricane-force winds as we go throughout the day. could see some winds gust well over 80 miles per hour. even higher once we make our move further off to the north turks and caicos islands. and that's going to be as we venture into late thursday, today, and as we venture into thursday night. into the upcoming weekend, notice the path to the north and west. you need to focus on the cone here, and this is expected to be a major hurricane as we go throughout the next several days. that track is about 175 miles. so florida and the carolina coastline, but most likely scenario, eastern florida. big impacts here. we're talking about damaging winds and heavy flooding rains. >> and justin, there are currently three hurricanes active in the atlantic ocean and the gulf of mexico. is that unusual? >> it definitely is. i'm covering up one right here. we're looking at one, two, and here's one behind me. haven't seen anything like this since 2010. you're talking about major hurricanes. these two here are not just yet. you have to go back even further. it's something that can occur

caribbean. this one got strong east of the leeward islands. 185-mile-per-hour winds that far east, this is the first time. >> are we going to create a category six as we see more of these stronger storms? >> until last year, we hadn't seen a category five. since 2007. certainly this storm is not rewriting the intensity scale, but it's more how long lived it's been. it's the longest time we've had a storm this long. it's 36 hours now this strong. >> is there any idea how long this season could last? it seems like the lines that were once pretty clear are getting increasingly blurry. >> caller: typically, the official end date is november 30th.
