>> we have jessica, alexis, and mike. we're talking about cooler temperatures. >> summer is not over, but we have wilder swings and today is one of those cooler days and the remnants of lydia are kicking in. look at the arrows are pointing inland. that's a cooler breeze coming off the walter. it's also going to bring moisture with it in the form of sprinkles to even a light shower and a remote chance of some lightning and thunder. that's what i have in your 12-hour day planner. you can see there best chance this morning will linger through noon. it tapers at 4:00, and 67 to 79 is our spread. as we head to 7:00, 64 around the coast. 69 in the bay, and 72 inland. a little bit of sunshine before the sun sets at 7:29. i don't think you need the umbrella this morning, but maybe the windshield wipers once or twice. >> so far, we had quite a few issues already, at least for the 4:00 hour. they're all starting to clear

up. a quick check of the santa cruz mountains commute if you're coming in on northbound 17 just past the summit, a two-car crash. one vehicle spun out, facing sideways in the far right lane. that clears 15 minutes ago. we did have a few residual delays. we're back in the dwreen now. not taking us a long time to bounce back from the issues w sr woor just hoping we'll get them totally clear before we pick up pace. those volumes are still looking great. we'll look at drive times in less than ten minutes. hi, everyone. want to show you these images that continue coming in from hurricane irma. this is a live picture of the dominican republic where it is hitting right now. also, new numbers. i have just learned that at least ten deaths have been caused by irma across the caribbean. also, dozens of people hurt. those that have made it through, though, facing utter devastation. i want to show you these images also. barbuda is in rubble this morning. 90% of structures are destroyed. it's a tiny island of 1,600

people, and the prime minister thinks it will take about $150 million to rebuild. now, irma continues to barrel west. likely hitting the u.s. this weekend on sunday, but mike tracking two other storms right behind irma, so things not over for the caribbean. these images could only get worse. meanwhile, travel advisories are issued so be aware if you have a flight out east. >> take a close look at the screen shot from flight tracking website flight radar 24, delta was the last plane to leave. what a flight that must have been, flying in between bands of that devastating hurricane. delta says the flight was completely safe, though, with the pilots working in tandem with dispatchers and airline meteorologists to carefully chart the flight plan. >> take a look at a shot of hurricane irma from outer space. nasa took this video from the international space station this week. shows irma swirling above the atlantic.

look how massive that is. irma has maximum sustained winds at 185 miles per hour. they extend 50 miles from the center of the storm. >> mike, what are you seeing in terms of radar returns? >> we're seeing a lot of rain coming out of this system. and you can see why. it just hasn't lost its integrity over the last 24 hours. and that makes it another record storm. because of that, 180-mile-per-hour winds now. west-northwest at 17. that's why it hasn't been a big flood producer, because it has been moving so fast. it's going to bury tomorrow night, the turks and caicos with at least a 20-foot storm surge possible and 20 inches of rain. now it starts to head towards cuba and then makes the right-hand turn sunday night into monday morning. and barrels down on miami as a category 4. rakes the entire peninsula before coming ashore near hilton head, possibly savannah, charleston, and look at all that rain that's going to move into the mid-atlantic. in fact, at least eight inches

of rain, if not more out of this system in florida, possibly areas of up to 15 inches. you can see why they're bracing, especially with visions of hurricane andrew fresh in a lot of people's minds. >> all right, thank you, mike. remember, you can download the abc7 news app and enable psh alerts for up to the minute information on hurricane irma. grief counsellors will be at a pacifica middle school after a popular teacher was killed in a freak accident on campus. >> tiffany wilson joins us live with more. good morning, tiffany. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and matt. this morning, we found a makeshift memorial. here you can see some flowers, stuffed animals, sheet music, and even a t-shirt signed by one of the students saying thank you for introducing to my love of music. rip jerry downs. now, gera downs was struck by his own vehicle in the parking lot of the middle school yesterday. pacifica police say it somehow rolled away before it hit and killed him. downs held the position of band

director at ingrid b. lacy middle school and ocean shore elementary for the past 15 years. students, parents, and teachers admired his passion for music and his devotion to students. he didn't just give his time. he often gave from his pocketbook as well. >> whenever they needed for marching band, whatever instruments, he would buy instruments, uniforms, shoes. he's a really generous guy. >> a formal announcement of his death will be made to the students during homeroom this morning. downs was 62 years old. live in pacifica, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> thank you, tiffany. the record setting hot weather in san francisco is now blamed for three deaths. the medical examiner's office says the victims were all in their 80s and 90s and were found alone inside their homes. no 911 calls were made by them asking for help. san francisco hit 106 degrees last friday, setting an all-time record high. >> developing news.

a bill to protect immigrant tenets is moving through the state legislature. the tenant protection act sponsored by david chu passed the state senate yesterday. it would prevent landlords from using immigration status for the purpose of retaliation, harassment, or to influence a tenant to vacate the home. the bill returns to the assembly for a second vote. >> the marin county sheriff's office is warning parents about a phone scam. parents receive a call on their cell phone claiming their child has been kidnapped. caller then demands a ransom. one recent case, a mom says she could hear a girl's voice frantically saying mommy help me. the mom called authorities right away which is what you're supposed to do. they found her daughter safe on an after school bus. investigators say similar calls have been reported in vacaville and fairfield. >> developing news in santa rosa where police are warning residents about a mountain lion that may be in their midst and may be hurt. around 2:30 in the morning, officers received a report of a mountain lion.

seven hours later, another report was received frame a resident who hit the lion with their car. this is in the area of montecito meadows. police say call them if you see the mountain lion and do not go near it for any reason. >> new detills on the reopening of the phifer canyon bridge. crews are in the process of rebuilding the bridge after it was badly damaged in winter storms. they hope to open the new highway 1 bridge by next month. the old concrete bridge was fractured by a landslide in february and had to be demolished. caltrans has been working on the replacement bridge for the past several months. are you worried about not knowing where your kids' wet weather gear is? we have scattered drops this morning for students as they head off at 7:00. look at this, temperature 63 to 66 degrees whether you're at the coast, living around the bay or inland. by 3:00, we'll start to see the sun break through the clouds. 68 at the coast, 73 around the bay, and about 79 inland.

i wouldn't give them an umbrella. it's going to be really light, the showers we do get. temperatures, 61 in the financial to 67 in the ferry building. west portal, 62. mission, castro, potrero hill, crissy field, and bayview all at about 65. same temperature in richmond. 67 in saratoga. also in santa clara, pleasanton, walnut creek, pittsburg, and american canyon. highs today, about 72 in tahoe. 84 in yosemite. thunderstorms around tahoe. if you're heading down to l.a., 84 degrees. monterey, 74. for us, we'll have temperatures right around the 60s and 70s. a few 80s inland. the coolest day this week. i'll show you a warmer trend coming up in my seven-day forecast. >> all right. taking a look at the roads this morning. we don't have any major backups so far this morning, but we are in recovery mode on westbound 80. before you get to willow avenue, we had a two-car crash that basically got stopped in the two middle lanes. they cleared that about 20 minutes ago, but you're stop and

go from just south of the carquinez bridge. if you're heading from the bridge to the hercules area, really only about a five-minute delay if you want to cut over and use surface streets, it could save you a couple minutes, but it's not a terrible backup. here's golden gate bridge. talked to a couple coworkers who said they had to flip their wipers on a few times. we'll check on drive times coming up next. all right, get ready for more implosions like this one. next saturday, the 16th, caltrans will continue the demolition of the remaining 13 foundations that supported the eastern section of the old bay bridge. demolition will happen between 10:00 and 11:10 in the morning. b.a.r.t. will stop trains outside the transbay tube. passengers can expect a 15-minute delay. >> a major overhaul is coming to an east bay b.a.r.t. station. >> b.a.r.t. revealed details about a new transit village at the walnut creek station.

transit agency says the development includes 600 apartments, shops, restaurants, and a new parking garage with 100 additional spots. the new garage is welcome news for many passengers who say it's tough to find a space. b.a.r.t. also tried to calm concerns about the impact of the construction. >> this is going to be done in stages so we can limit the impact on folks. no matter what happens, we'll have the sail number of spots available throughout this process. >> an attendant will help drivers park during construction. the new parking garage is set to open next fall. that breaking news from amazon. the company now looking for a second headquarters and promising to spend more than $5 billion on whatever site it chooses. founder and ceo jeff bezos says this morning the new headquarters will be a, quote, full equal to its seattle counterpart. also set to add as many as 50,000 jobs. and now cities are scrambling to be on the short list, and here's

as hurricane irma barrels toward florida, a major question is looming. can their high rise towers and construction cranes handle 185-mile-per-hour winds? tom llamas has the look in "gma's" first look. >> in this morning's "gma" first look, hurricane irma causing a sky high scare for some in downtown florida. in miami, a combination of condo canyons and massive construction cranes leading to new warnings. hurricane andrew in 1992 led to stricter building codes, including in some cases mandating impact resistant windows. >> three, two, one. >> this demonstration shows how impact glass can stop a projectile in its tracks. the other major concern in south florida, those massive cranes. this family lives on the 44th floor of a high rise right next

door to one of those cranes. >> i just heard that we might have to worry about the cranes. >> and we'll have full team coverage of hurricane irma coming up at 7:00 a.m., with your "gma" first look, i'm tom llamas, abc news, miami. >> this video out of coral gables, florida, shows how desperate people are about getting drinking water. huge lines have been forming around stores. people making mad dashes through aisles before supplies dry up. this guy found a hidden stash behind some food in the freezer aisle. >> 5:15. happening today, two cousins charged in the deaths of four men will head to court for preliminary hearing. these men were all found buried on the suspect's property on bucks county, pennsylvania. the suspects are 20-year-old cosmo dinardo and shaun crats. his lawyer has said that dinardo confessed in exchange for prosecutors agreeing to not seek the death penalty. all four victims had been shot

and at least three of the bodies had been set on fire. >> president trump is expected to return to camp david again this weekend, this time with his full cabinet in tow. he'll host the members of his cabinet in maryland starting tomorrow. they're expected to discuss a wide range of issues spanning from the administration's legislative strategy for tax reform to the growing nuclear crisis in north korea. the president's most recent trip to camp david fell during hurricane harvey's landfall in texas. facebook says an internal investigation has found $100,000 in advertising that likely operated out of russia. social network said the ads ran between june 2015 and may 2017 and carry divisive social and political messages. facebook said only a small number mentioned donald trump or hillary clinton by name. the ads were traced to a russian toll farm. facebook has shared the findings with u.s. investigators. >> we have a bird's eye or drone's eye view of the new apple campus before next tuesday's grand opening.

it took eight years to build this saucer-like campus. it will house as many as 4,000 employees add one time. there's a 100,000 square foot fitness center as well as four story glass doors. apple is expetted to host a special event during which they'll hold their first ever product unveiling at the steve jobs theater. >> the official start of fashion week, tom ford kicking things off unofficially yesterday. gigi hadid, kendall jenner, joan smalls wore pieces from the 2018 collection. the event was attended by stars like cindy crawford and julianne moore. >> happening today, the nfl season officially kicks off with the defending super bowl champions taking on the chiefs in foxborough, massachusetts. the patriots will unfurl their fifth super bowl banner prior to the game. kickoff at 5:30 p.m. raiders open on the road in tennessee on sunday morning

while the niners host the panthers sunday afternoon. >> next month, the warriors will begin defending their nba title. today, dub nation will be able to buy single game tickets for the upcoming season. season ticket holders get the first shot this morning. wariers insiders will get a chance this afternoon. tickets will be made available to the general public tomorrow. opening night is against the rockets. >> already visualizing it raining threes for the team, but are we going to get actual rain today? >> i think so. very scattered, very light. so far, it's been above 1,000 feet, but we had a couple hundreds of an inch falling in our higher elevations. we have a window in the next couple hours for that. right now, pretty dry. 280 at 17 in a cloudy san jose. cooling clouds today and a chance of showers. with that comes a slight chance of lightning and thunder. lower humidity. a lot of people talking about it. that's what's going to develop over the weekend when it gets kind of toasty once again.

can't get rid of summer. not this time of the year. let's take a look at live doppler 7. notice, no radar returns right now, but plenty of gray out there, so all of us waking up cloudy and kind of humid this morning. all right, so we'll jump ahead. you can see green developing. those are the light showers off the coast, as the area of low pressure and its energy draws near during the morning commute. let's put this into motion and see how it spreads across from west to east into our neighborhoods as we head through the morning commute. notice it all stays green. no yellow, no red, nothing heavy out of this whatsoever. even if a thunderstorm does develop, the chances of it raining heavy on us, not that great. by noon, still a few random showers out there, then by 4:00, it's over and you can see the clouds starting to open just a little bit as we head through the latter parts of the afternoon into the evening hours. you want some cool fall-like weather, how about this? temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. not the 60s, but it feels good compared to where we have been the previous few days.

as you head to the peninsula, 70 to 76. mid 60s along the coast to upper 60s in downtown san francisco. how about 72 in vallejo to about 77 in novato through the north bay. along the east bay shore, 72. and berkeley and oakland. to castro valley and fremont, 76. also 72 in hercules, and as you head inland, temperatures not even making it to the 80s in the san ramon valley. cloet, 79. 81 to 85 for the rest of us. tonight, 50s. thas when you start to see some of the drier air really creep in. 57 to about 64 is our average. all right, we'll step through the accuweather seven-day forecast day by day. you can see tomorrow, we start to transition away from the muggy weather. saturday, we're back to average. sunday and monday, we're going to be warmer than average, even at the coast. just like we're having an area of low pressure off the coast today, there's a possibility another one develops tuesday and wends with a slight chance of wet weather. >> want to take you back to castro valley. we just got a few more details on this incident on eastbound

580, right on the off ramp to 238. so we still have about five vehicles at the scene, and according to chp, that was actually two separate crashes. the first one involved two vehicles. the second involving three vehicles. one person was hurt, so they need a tow truck for all five vehicles, all of them damaged pretty badly. that really has not cleared yet, but it's just impacting the ramp. looks like maybe a tiny bit of heavy traffic filling in on 238, but that's our typical volume. also starting to fill in at the bay bridge toll plaza. haven't gotten official word that the metering lights are on, but i bet any second they will flip on and things are going to stack up through the maze. a quick check of drive times too. so far looking pretty good. southbound 680, walnut creek to dublin in the green at 13. southbound 101, in the green at 51. and northbound 17, highway 1 into los gatos, we did have an earlier crash near the summit. that's all clear and you're back in the green at 22 minutes. >> coming up next, the seven things you need to know. >> and an amazing medical

good morning. thanks for joining us on this thursday, september 7th. i'm matt keller. >> i'm natasha. jessica, how is it going? >> alexis smith, good morning, and mike nicco bringing us cooler weather. >> everybody is going to be cooler today. whether you get a shower or not, that's still iffy. they're scattered out there. they have been mainly in the higher elevations. you can see on live doppler 7, it is gray this morning. we're off to it kind of feels like a touch of fall, maybe a little bit. a little humid for that. sfo cloudy at about 67 degrees. let's look at your 12-hour day planner. what's going to happen today? 63 to 67 because of the lingering humidity out there. as we head to noon, about 65 at the coast, 72 around the bay, 74 inland. notice the showers, there's still a chance at noon, but the chance will taper at 4:00. clouds will start to open up and we'll jump to the mid and upper 70s. if you're heading out this morning, no need to worry about

the wet weather. 64 to 72. >> we have the bay bridge metering lights officially on. that happened around 5:21. doesn't take long after they do that for things to fill in through the maze. arpool lane still looking good at this point, but fast track and cash lanes, you're going to be slowed down. westbound 580, still hanging on to the yellow, but you're up to 49 minutes. westbound 4, antioch to concord in the green at 17. southbound 101, san rafael to san francisco, also in the green at 17 minutes. i do have a new note to pass along for highway 17. we'll talk more about that next. we want to begin this half hour with developing news we have been tracking all morning. hurricane irma churning its way through the caribbean with its eye on florida. the category 5 hurricane has already really ravaged parts of the caribbean, and some towns are pure rubble this morning. i want to take you now to one of our reporters who is standing by. stephanie ramos, tracking the

storm for us. hi, stephanie. >> reporter: hey there, jessica. it is a gorgeous start to the day here in miami. it is calm. it is quiet. but not for long. hurricane irma is expected to hit florida in the next two days. and we have already seen the damage, the devastation that it's caused in the caribbean. hurricane irma slamming puerto rico and the northern caribbean. nearly every building damaged on the island of barbuda when the eye of the storm rolled through wednesday. about 60% of the island's people left homeless. heavy rain hammering puerto rico, now nearly a million people left without power and more than 1,000 in shelters, even though the eye of the storm stayed offshore. back here on the mainland, floridians are nailing down very evacuation plans. >> never had a cat 5. never experienced it. its are just scary.

>> or getting ready to hunker down and weather the category 5 storm. most store shelves are bare, as people try to stock up on supplies. there are traffic jams on the highways and here's another common sight in southern florida. lines of cars stretching into the street as drivers try to gas up their vehicles. >> gas is running out everywhere right now. so i'm just a little too late trying to get it, i guess. >> people here are bracing themselves for what could be one of the worst storms in florida history. >> this is serious, and we cannot take chances. it is life threatening. this is not a storm you can sit and wait through. >> here in miami, mandatory evacuations are in place for certain areas like the keys and miami beach. and the city is really trying to make it just a little easier for folks trying to get out of here. for instance, drsveri to p day't for interstate tolls. now, florida's governor rick scott says even though we may

have at least 48 hours before the storm hits the area, he does want people here to take the storm seriously. and prepare for it. matt, natasha. >> certainly good advice. thank you, stephanie. >> this morning, local crews are gearing up to help out in florida as irma approaches. >> amy hollyfield is live in hayward where pg&e workers are about to head out. amy. >> reporter: hi, matt. yeah, they'll be here in about an hour to start packing up and getting ready. they're going to fly out of here tomorrow. they will stage away from the storm in a safe location, and then they'll be given rides into the damaged area once it has passed. they will be helping restore power to the affected areas. here's why they are part of the relief effort. >> in 2014, we signed a cross continent mutual aid agreement with florida power and light that essentially says should there be a disaster, either in florida or in pg&e's territory, we're there for each other. and we will be there to support

one another. >> oakland firefighters will also help out in florida. 50 members of the urban search and rescue task force will fly out today. two dozen others are already on the road. they were in houston helping with rescues after hurricane harvey. they were on their way home here to the bay area when they got turned around and sent to florida. back to pg&e. florida also called for their help last year with hurricane matthew. but then realized they didn't need them, so the crew stayed home. so pg&e says they think it's pretty significant that they're being asked to fly out already when the storm hasn't even hit yet. reporting live in hayward, amy hollyfield. >> thank you. miami-dade county's mayor says they're as ready as they can be for a direct hit from the hurricane. mayor carlos jimenez appeared on "good morning america" this morning. he told george stephanopoulos that south florida has learned a lot from previous hurricanes, especially hurricane andrew in '92. the mayor says gas stations will be resupplied today and residents should be able to buy

gas after the storm because a number of stations have generators. >> we also have supermarkets that will be able to operate, because what we also want is for us to get our residents to be back in as normal life as possible, and as self-sufficient as possible so we tell our residents they have to be self-sufficient for three days of food and water. they're heeding our warning. >> you can watch george stephanopoulos's entire interview with the mayor coming up at 7:00 a.m. on "good morning america." >> alameda police are investigating after finding a noose outside tennis courts near alameda high school. police say they're investigating it as a hate crime. the noose was fashioned out of thin nylon rope from the tennis court's privacy screen. they say the school notified parents with a robocall and with a notify on the website. some parents believe officials should do more to reassur african-american students. >> that's a message. it's clear. i think we should send another message to say, this is not how we do it in the bay area.

like whoever did it needs to be held accountable for it. >> i'm very sorry that the parents don't feel that the school reacted enough. but i think people also need to understand that it takes a little bit of time to figure out how best to respond. >> the school district plans to hold a series of student meetings. alameda police want anyone with information about the noose to contact them. two inmates who escaped from a federal prison camp in dublin are still on the loose this morning. anna armstrong and irene mitchell walked away from the minimum security facility on monday night. the alameda county sheriff's office tweeted out a photo showing mitchell in livermore yesterday, and it shows her covering her face. both women were serving time on drug charges. >> 15 states and the district of columbia have filed a lawsuit to stop president trump from ending the daca program. san jose and santa clara county are also planning litigation. we were in redwood city where hundreds of people came together for a prayer vigil for daca

southern bahamas, so some of these islands will get buried by the storm surge. they'll reemerge, but they'll definitely be changed. 150-mile-per-hour winds sunday night into monday morning as that moves into miami and possibly hilton head, charleston, or savannah will be hit with a 2 turning down to a 1. some flooding possible in the southeast. temperatures in the mid to 60s in our inland east bay neighborhoods. 70 the warm spot in concord. pretty much temperatures like that everywhere right now. kind of a muggy morning with a slight chance of showers. i'll show you that hour by hour coming up next and heat in the weekend forecast. here's alexis. >> we started off kind of busy this morning with a handful of crashes. we're in the recovery mode or the clearing stages for all of them at this point. we're starting to look quite a bit better. westbound 80 before willow avenue, where we had a two-car collision in the two center lanes for about 15, 20 minutes, then some activity on the shoulder that was slowing you down. we did have some backups from the carquinez bridge. now it looks like it's our typical delays starting to fill

my other accuweather highlights, cooler, mostly cloudy tonight. we'll keep the cooler theme going until we get to the weekend when the dry air returns and the hot air also returns to most of our neighborhoods. here's a look at where the heaviest of the storms are. chico, redding, heading to eureka. and look at all the lightning bolts. that's the reason why there's a high fire danger, because of that lightning. back here at home, you can see the light showers developing. the greens as we head through the morning commute. from 9:00 to noon, it starts to taper just a little bit. from noon to 3:00, it just about ends and we'll need the sunglasses at times this afternoon as some holes will develop in that cloud cover. let's take a look at your temperatures for today. mid to upper 60s along the coast into san francisco. you can see 66 in half moon bay to 68 in san francisco. 72 in oakland to about 76 in fremont and palo alto. 77 to 79 in the south bay. about 73 to 75 in the north bay.

and some low 80s in our inland east bay neighborhoods. let's take a look at my accuweather seven-day forecast. and you're going to see temperatures warm a little bit tomorrow, but really the dry air starts to move in saturday with seasonal temperatures and then sunday and monday, it gets kind of hot. 70s at the coast, mid 80s around the bay. upper 90s inland, and then another chance of some wet weather is brewing for tuesday and to a lesser extent wednesday. look at the temperatures pull back down. i just checked, 600ths of an inch of rain. there's a little shower activity in the santa cruz mountains. >> if you're driving on highway 17, the electronic signs, you'll see slow down, wet roads. chp saying they're warning everyone. >> nice reminder. >> we could have slick conditions. boy, you know, especially the first time that we have had any measurable rainfall in a long time. those oils really rise to the surface and we all know highway 17 is pretty curvy and not easy on a dry day. really take that easy and keep that in mind here this morning. taking you down to highway 17,

sfwloo one of the biggest fires in the west is burning. a facebook user posted this time lapse video of the eagle creek fire from across the columbia river in washington. it's scorched 30,000 acres since it started on saturday. oregon state police say a 15-year-old boy is suspected of starting the fire while playing with fireworks. >> still no word on why a pair of fighter jets was spotted over contra costa county yesterday. video tweeted shows the naval f-16 fighting falcons over danville. people in walnut creek, concord,
