we're seeing some rain out there. i'm matt keller in for reggie aqui. >> i'm natasha zubes. jessica is tracking news. alexis smith looking at our roads, and mike nicco possibly bringing us showers. >> definitely cooling for everybody, showers possible but not for everybody. that's the key. 29-mile-per-hour wind at fairfield. look at those wind arrows. they're all pointing inland. that's a sea breeze and why it's cooler today. here's a look at the clouds that are every once in a while giving up sprinkles to even the possibility of a light shower. 63 to 67 this morning. so it's mild once again during the overnight hours. we'll stay in the mid 60s at the coast. low to mid 70s around the bay from noon to 4:00. mid to upper 70s inland. that's quite a change. if you're heading out this evening, a little sunshine toward 7:00. 64 to 72. more on irma coming up next. how about the morning commute? >> taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights on 5:21 this morning. we had a report of a disabled vehicle on the other side of the toll plaza in one of the

left-hand lanes. haven't seen updates and it does not look like it's slowing down the carpool lanes. hopefully it means it's all clear. not all clear if you're trying to get out of tracy. westbound 580 into dublin, 54 minutes. no delay, southbound 680, and northbound 85, you still look good at 15 minutes. i'll update that crash we have in san jose in less than ten. okay, here at the live desk, we continue tracking hurricane irma. the storm cutting a path of destruction across the caribbean. at least ten people are now dead. the tiny island of barbuda is the worst hit so far. this is an aerial view of the destruction. officials say 95% of the buildings are damaged. also want to show you the storm right now. this is a live picture of the dominican republic. we have been watching this all night and all morning, and if you can believe it, this is actually much less windy than it was just a few hours ago.

evacuations under way in florida ahead of the storm. officials there saying this morning key west will be totally shut down, all hospitals there will be closed, and if people choose to stay, they will be on their own. right now. matt. >> all right, thank you, jess. >> looking closely at the screen shot from flight tracking website flightradar24. delta flight was the last to leave san juan's airport before it shut down. flying between bands of the devastating hurricane. delta said the flight was completely safe, with the pilots working in tandem to flight the chart plan. >> this shot of hurricane irma, nasa taking this video from the international space station this week. it shows irma swirling above the atlantic, just so you can see the size of it. irma has maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour. those hurricane force winds extend up to 50 miles from the center of the storm. now, mike, you have been

tracking irma all week. what's the latest now? >> a good question because it continues to be one of the strongest storms and longest lasting of those strongest storms ever. go back 24 hours and you can see it by puerto rico, heading across the dominican republic and over towards haiti as a category 5 storm with 180-mile-per-hour winds. that's not touching the island yet. it will, though, as it gets towards the turks and caicos tomorrow night. let's look at that, 165-mile-per-hour winds, but a 20-foot storm surge and 20 inches of rain will bury some of those islands and also some of the southern bahamas before it starts to take that turn towards miami monday morning as a category 4 with 150-mile-per-hour winds. rakes the florida peninsula as a category 3 and heads into the carolinas as a category 1 where flooding will be a big issue in the mid-atlantic next week. back to you. >> thank you. we do want to remind you, you can download the abc7 news app. enable push alerts and we'll send you up to the minute information on hurricane irma.

>> grief counsellors will be at a pacifica middle school after a popular teacher was killed in a freak accident on campus. >> so sad. news reporter tiffany wilson joins us live at ingrid b. lacy middle school. >> a makeshift memorial here in the parking lot honors the man whose legacy will live on through many students. jerry downs was struck by his own vehicle in this parking lot yesterday morning. pacifica police say it somehow rolled away before it hit and killed him. downs held the position of band director both here at ing rnd b. lacy middle school and ocean shore elementary for the past 15 years. students, parents, and fellow teachers say he was a beloved member of the faculty who truly made a difference in his students' lives. >> he was so involved. and he was so active. and just his love of music. i believe the kids were influenced by that. at least i know my son was. >> downs was known for throwing

annual barbecues at his house, and aunch he helped students pay for instruments or band uniforms out of his own pocket. the students will be formally told about the sudden death during homeroom this morning and grief counselors will be on hand. live in pacifica, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> thank you, tiffany. the recent record setting hot weather in san francisco is being blamed for three deaths now. medical examiner's office says the victims were all in their 80s and 90s and were found alone in their homes. they made no calls to 911 asking for help. san francisco hit 106 degrees last friday. that was an all-time record high. >> developing news. a bill to protect immigrant tenants is moving through the state legislature. the protection act sponsored by david chu passed the state senate yesterday. it would prevent landlords from using immigration status for the purpose of retaliation, harassment, or to influence a tenant to vacate the home. the bill now returns to the assembly for a second vote. santa rosa police are warning neighbors about a

mountain lion that may be in the area and may be hurt. around 2:30 yesterday morning, officers received a report of a mountain lion in the area of channing road. seven hours later, they got another report from a person who hit a mountain lion with their car. that was about a mile and a half away in montecito meadows. police say to call them if you see a mountain lion and do not go near it for any reason. new details on the reopening of phifer canyon bridge near big sur. right now, crews are in the process of rebuilding the bridge after it was badly damaged derwinter storms. according to the chronicle, caltrans hopes to open the new bridge by next month. hopefully some time in mid-october. the old concrete bridge was fractured by a landslide in february and had to be demolished. caltrans has been working on the replacement for the past several months. get ready for more implosions like this one. next saturday, the 16th, caltrans will continue the

that breaking news coming in right now on the jobs front. the number of people filing for unemployment benefits soared last week. the most in nearly five years. and all because of hurricane harvey's impact on texas and louisiana. labor department released numbers only just a short time ago. i have them here on my computer saying that applications jumped by nearly 62,000 last week, and 51,000 of those were from texas. i do have a little bit of good news. labor department says apart from the storm and the recovery efforts there, the job market is healthy. but boy, harvey really having an impact even on our jobs. let's check in with mike. >> a lot of people don't think of that far reaching effects.

it comes to everybody's neighborhood. hi, everyone. here's a look at one of our last warm mornings. temperatures are warmer this morning, up to 6 degrees, but it's still going to be cooler this afternoon. we're not going to warm up a whole lot because of cloud cover and a chance of showers. right now, low to mid 60s in the north bay. 67 in napa. same temperature in lafayette, san ramon, to near 70 in san jose and 68 in alameda. around the state, thunderstorms in tahoe, redding, eureka, sacramento. clearer and 84 in l.a. you can see a warmer trend is on the way as we thhead into the weekend. i'll let you know what our chances are of rain in your neighborhood today. >> i want to take you down to the south bay and an earlier crash that we had on 880. it was reported northbound. we had a backup southbound, so i'm still thinking it was on the southbound side. no matter what direction it was in, it's pushed off on the shoulder and we're not seeing residble delays. taking you down further south, if you're traveling between

take a look at this video out of coral gables, florida. it shows you how desperate the people are there about getting drinking water now. huge lines have been forming around stores and people are making mad dashes through aisles before supplies dry up. this guy actually found a hidden stash behind some food in the freezer aisle. >> facebook says an internal investigation has found 100,000 dollars in advertising that likely operated out of russia. the social network said the ads ran between june 2015 and may 2017 and carry divisive social and political messages across the idealogical spectrum. facebook says only a small number mention donald trump or hillary clinton by name. the ads were traced to a russian troll farm. facebook says it has shared the findings with u.s. investigators. >> new details on a proposal for civilian oversight of santa clara county jails after the death of a mentally ill inmate

two years ago. the muercury news says the boar of supervisors will talk over a plan. the proposal is in line with the key recommendation from the blue ribbon commission on improving custody operations. it convened after three guards beat michael tyree to death in 2015. >> the marin county sheriff's office is warning about a phone scam. this is how it works. parents receive a call on their cell phone claiming their child has been kidnapped and the caller demands a ransom. in one case, a mom said she could hear a child's voice saying mommy help me. they found her daughter safe on an after-school bus. investigators say similar calls have been reported in vacaville and fairfield. nuthis morning, amazon is looking to expand big time with the second headquarters and is ready to adas many as 50,000 jobs. founder and ceo jeff bezos is

promising his company will spend more than $5 billion on whatever site it chooses. new headquarters will be a full equal to its seattle counterpart. whatever city gets the headquarters can expect a financial bonanza. seattle added $38 billion to the city's economy. >> nearly three months after the warriors championship parade, the city of oakland is still waiting to be reimbursed for the parade celebration costs. warriors co-owner announced at the rally that the team was picking up the tab as a gift to the city, but the east bay reports that they sent a bill to the team, and it has yet to receive money for the festivities. city officials say the warriors have not given them a reason to doubt they will eventually reimburse the city. warriors officials say both sides are trying to determine a final parade cost. >> next month, the warriors will begin defending their nba title, and today, dub nation will begin to be able to buy single tickets for the next season. warriors insiders will get a

and light showers. the clouds keeping us warmer this morning will keep us cooler than average this afternoon. the slight chance of lightning and thunder to the north and east of us, and lower humidity but warmer weather this weekend. here's a look at the cloud deck. you see a solid shield of gray on top of us as i have over laid the clouds on live doppler 7. let's show you what's going to happen as we head through the next couple hours. moisture comes ashore in the form of some sprinkles. notice no yellows, no oranges, no reds. by the time we get to noon, very isolated, and during the afternoon hours, it kind of evaporates. so do some of the clouds. look for some sunshine this afternoon through the evening hours. you'll wand to have the sunglasses. temperatures today wilt still hit the 80s, low 80s in the inland east bay neighborhoods. upper 70s in the south bay. 72 to 76 around the bay. 73 to 75 in the north bay. and about 66 to 68 along the coast into san francisco. already feeling the effects of the cooler and drier air tonight with temperatures from 57 to

about 64 degrees. here's my accuweather seven-day forecast. yes, it is going to get hot. really hot sunday and monday inland, with upper 90s. mid 80s around the bay. low 70s at the coast, and another chance of wet weather and cooler weather is brewing for tuesday and wednesday. hey, alexis. >> good morning. and we started off pretty busy this morning with several issues on the roads. now, we really don't have too much. we're seeing some slow spots, in those typical areas filling in. southbound 8 yith between san lorenzo and south of the san mateo bridge, 22 miles per hour, 32 miles per hour, and nothing blocking, just the typical slowdown. mike just saw this camera and said whoa, what's going on in walnut creek? nothing out of the ordinary. unfortunately, we're just back to full volumes now that the labor day holiday is over. everybody back to work and school, and that's what that turns into. ace rail is continuing to have signal issues this morning out of stockton. initially it looked like ace 3 wasn't going to be impacted, but ace 1, about 12 minutes late. ace 3 did finally leave stockton

looking at the skies. >> good morning. a little sprinkle or two here or there. that's what we have so far this morning. some showers are possible as we head through the next couple hours. hi, everyone. a look at live doppler 7. you can see, mainly gray as i have overlaid the clouds. 53 minutes, that's the average arrival delay into sfo. a mild morning, 63 to 67, because of the clouds and humidity. the same clouds keep us cooler than average with a chance of showers through about 3:00. we'll see breaks in the cloud cover and sunshine. temperature 66 at the coast, mid to upper 70s elsewhere at 4:00. 64 to 72 at 7:00. how about that commute, alexis? >> we're looking pretty typical here. we're seeing some pretty heavy volumes at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights on since 5:21 this morning. we did have an earlier issue on the westbound side of 80, on the westbound side of the toll booths that has long cleared. that was a disabled vehicle blocking the left lane. i am hearing about an issue on the lower deck. sounds like a disabled vehicle

blocking one lane within the tunnel. a quick check of drive times. highway 4 to the maze, 42 minutes, in the yellow. 12 across the bay bridge, and no issues getting to sfo in the green at nine minutes. >> thank you, alex. >> developing news. at least ten people are dead as hurricane irma continues to barrel west. >> overnight, the storm passed hispaniola and the dominican republic. now it's headed to turks and caicos and southeast bahamas. high winds have knocked out power to more than a million people in puerto rico as irma skirted the island with the eye about 50 miles offshore. officials say about to 37 million people could be affected by irma. the national hurricane center says hurricane watches for the portions of the florida keys, miami-dade county and broward county will likely be issued today. >> quickly want to jump in here from our live desk because president trump is tweeting about the storm. he tweeted a half dozen times today. once about hurricane irma, saying hurricane irma is raging but we have great teams of

talent and brave team already in place and ready to help. be careful, be safe. #fema. >> bay area rescue organization is providing space and care for animals orphaned by hurricane irma. happening today, the animals are arrivi arriving. welcoming what is expecting to be an onslaught of pets. they need crates and medical supplies for the new clients. they're also offering free adoptions for the irma pets. >> back here at the live desk, teams from the bay area are getting ready right now to head to florida to help. an abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield live in hayward where pg&e crews are grabbing their gear now. >> good morning, jessica. the storm hasn't even hit florida, but pg&e crews know they're going to be needed. they're here packing up. one worker who just arrived told me he feels nervous and excited. they're flying out tomorrow. pg&e signed an agreement with

florida power and light three years ago saying that they would help each other in the case of emergency. well, florida is now calling in for that help. pg&e says they have responded before to a hurricane but it doesn't happen very often. >> so this is the second time we have been called by florida power and light. the first time was last year for hurricane matthew. we prepared but we didn't have to go out. they had sufficient support. but we have gone to other disasters. one of the largest ones that we went to was sandy, and we actually sent 250 employees at that time. >> oakland firefighters are also helping out in florida. 50 members of the urban search and rescue team are flying out today. two dozen are driving from houston to florida. yep, they were already helping out with a disaster, the disaster that harvey left behind. now they're heading to florida. g&e crews will help with power outages that are expected from

irma. they will stage outside the storm area while it hits, and then when it's safe, they'll move in. i asked hi long they plan on being there, they say they just don't know at this point. reporting live in hayward, amy hollyfield. mike and jessica, back to you. >> thank you. yeah, they may not know how long they're going to stay there because there's so much activity churning in the caribbean. mike, there's also some hurricanes behind irma, right? >> jose behind irma, and then another one in the gulf. you can see that's developing almost the same place that harvey developed. we have three active storms. hurricanes right now, while not unprecedented, it's still very unusual to have that much energy to have it able to sustain three storms of that magnitude. >> that's my question, because we have just seen so much activity with harvey and now irma, et cetera. it just seems like an incredible amount this year. >> we knew it was going to be a very active year because we don't have el nino. what el nino does is for the eastern part of our country and the atlantic is it changes the

wind patterns and makes it unfavorable for a hurricane. we didn't have a lot of hurricanes last year. now, the air patterns are obviously conducive and the warm air and the warm water is really enhancing the hurricane threat. >> okay, thanks for the explanation, mike. natasha. >> we appreciate the insight. >> we're tracking this story, two inmates who escaped from a federal prison camp in dublin are still on the loose. anna armstrong and irene michelle walked away from the facility. the sheriff's office tweeted out this photo showing michelle in rural livermore yesterday, covering her face when she spotted someone snapping this photo of her. both women were serving time on drug charges. >> alameda police are investigating after finding a noose outside tennis courts near alameda high school. police say they're investigating it as a hate crime. the noose was fashioned from the tennis court's privacy screen. they notified parents with a robocall and with a notice on the district website.

some parents believe school officials should do more to reassure african-american students. >> that's a message. it's clear. i think we should send another message to say, this is not how we do it in the bay area. like whoever did it needs to be held accountable for it. >> i'm very sorry that the parents don't feel that the school reacted enough, but i think people also need to understand that it takes a little bit of time to figure out how best to respond. >> the school district plans to hold a series of student meetings. alameda police want anyone with information about the noose to contact them. >> 15 states in the district of columbia are suing to stop president trump from ending the daca program. san jose and santa clara county are also planning litigation. meantime, hundreds of people came together in redwood city last night vowing to fight for young people brought to the u.s. illegally by their parents. california's attorney general also planned to file a lawsuit but separate from authority other states. >> california senator dianne feinstein has introduced a bill

to help a couple deported from the u.s. to mexico. maria and her family raised a family and lived here for more than 20 years. she was a cancer nurse at highland hospital. the bill would grant them green cards. even if the senate okays the measure, the prosspeblth of president trump signing it appears to be slim. >> a man is accused of animal cruelty after shooting and killing a deer and her fawn on property. two of them are believed to have been shot by 54-year-old mark dickinson with his pellet gun. dickinson told police the deer were eating his new landscaping. >> the client had no intention of harming, hurting, or acting in any malicious way towards the animals. >> what was his intent then? >> to scare them away. >> you don't kill a doe with her fawn. it's really troubling. >> marin humane is doing a necropsy to determine how many times the deer were shot.

the marin county district attorney is now reviewing the case. >> it's 6:37 now. state senator scott wiener is not giving up on his effort to let cities party after 2:00 a.m. his bill to allow cities to extend last call from 2:00 to foyer:00 was directed to a task force study last week. he tells the crunical his bill is all about local choice, pointing out that night life is a huge part of the economy for cities. wiener says he will bring back the bill next year and limit it to cities who want to make the change. >> u.s. postal inspectors are in the process of returning hundreds of pieces of stolen mail to people in concord. turned up stuffed in pillowcases in a room at the hampton inn in brentwood. police say the thieves booked the room under a fake name and used a digical key app on their phone to check in. the applet them bypass the front desk. mail theft is a federal offense. there's a $10,000 reward leading to arrest and conviction. >> zoomed in view of what's

going on with hurricane irma, as we look at the viz nl satellite there. you can see the eye passing just to the north of the dominican republic by about 50 miles or so. all right, let's broaden out. you can see over the last 24 hours, the structure hasn't changed much, which makes it unprecedented because it still has 180-mile-per-hour winds. moving to the west-northwest at 17. still, the winds are the biggest issue as it moves through. that's going to change. the storm surge and the amount of rain that is going to leave on the turks and caicos could bury parts of those islands and definitely some of the southeastern parts and the central parts of the bahamas. it will bury some of those islands temporarily. they will reemerge after the storm surge and rain ends, but thal wibe altered. sunday night into monday morning, category 4 coming right up the chute into miami from the south, unlike andrew that came in directly from the east. so it's going to get pounded with the right quadrant all the way up to melbourne monday night

and then it goes out over the ocean and becomes a category 3 storm as it hits savannah and hilton head and charleston full on. and then flooding is going to be an issue in the appalachian mountains and part of the mid-atlantic as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. back here at home, let's look at the rainfall really quick. you're going to see more than eight inches especially on the eastern side. if you're heading out, temperatures in the mid to upper 60s just about everywhere. with a slight chance of wet weather. i'll go hour-by-hour look at that coming up next. first, i want to bring alexis in. traffic has exponentially gotten worse or fuller, and you have new issues to deal with. >> a couple new ones to talk about. one on 880 on the southbound side. right around the 238 interchange, really between 238 and a street, kind of a tough spot as it is. it sounds like we have one lane blocked right now. it does not sound like it's too serious, but i'll keep an eye on that. it's not terrible approaching
