now at 11:00, tracking hurrican irma. the storm now deadly as it tears through the caribbean overnight and continues its path towards florida. the update on when it's expected to make landfall and how bay area crews are busy lending a hand. first, we're tracking rain here at home. take a look at the video from the golden gate bridge this morning where it was a slow, wet ride with windshield wipers getting quite the workout. thanks for joining us. i'm cribbsy. the rain amount may not be impress any of number but certainly enough to delay commuters and inconvenience kids walking to school. our camera on mt. tam shows wet

and windy conditions even right now. let's get the weather where you live from meteorologist meek m nucle -- from meteorologist mike nicco. >> hi, everybody. a few showers around there around sfo and santa cruz mountains and east bay hills and up near point reyes and this will continue north and northeast as we head through the next couple of hours. our best chance is a window of about four hours from now of getting anymore of these light showers. most of the rainfall amounts have been around a couple hundreds of an inch and have been in the higher elevation. we've seen the rain come down to the lower elevations and dampen the streets and some people have grabbed the um la and that's going to be the case hover the next four hours or so. turk our attention to irma. can you see a 10-mile-per-hour drop is something positive, a little bit, but once you get up that fast, the damage is about the same, no matter how fast the winds. it's still moving to the west

northwest at about 17. going to start pushing into the balm as tomorrow morning with 1660-mile-per-hour winds and then you can see hitting florida sunday morning, category 4, a it will rip the coast of florida with rip currents, wind and flooding rains. >> as hurrican irma continues to churn its way to the mainland it's cutting a wide path of destruction from the caribbean. this is the view from space, and can you see how massive it is. just got new numbers. 13 people have been killed, and thousands left homeless. here's a live look now at mamie where can you see the beach is calm before the storm which is expected to hit late sunday. people in south florida are being told to get out of the way. abc news reporter stephanie ramos has the latest. >> hurrican irma is set to be the most powerful storm to travel over the atlantic ocean and it's left half of puerto rico without power.

nearly a million people are in the dark and about 50,000 without water.and on st. devastation. 115-mile-per-hour wind tore through the island paradise and up to eight deaths are being reported and on the tiny island. barbuda officials report 95% of its structures are damaged >> the entire country has been decimated. i have never seen anything like this before. >> back on mainland floridians are bracing for what's coming their way, scrambling to prepare for hurrican irma's wrath. crowds lined up outside this grocery store hours before it opened its doors, gas lines stretching for miles with many stations sold out. >> we have to get the fuel as fast as we can out so everybody has the feel to evacuate. >> reporter: the governor says to expect a long wait, but they won't stop working to get fuel to everyone. >> i'm very nervous.

i've been driving around for 30 minutes and my car has been on "e" for the past hour. >> and in the danger zone people are boarding up homes and businesses and officials issuing mandatory evacuations for low-lying areas including the keys, the state urging residents to get out now. >> this is not a storm you can sit and wait through. >> reporter: in washington, president trump says he believes florida is prepared for irma. >> we don't know exactly where it's going to be landing, where landfall will be, but we think we're as ale prepared as you can possibly be. >> reporter: with irma's size as big as the state, residents on both coasts should be prepared to evacuate. stephanie ramos, abc news, miami. >> bay area utility workers and firefighters are headed out to florida now. they expect they will be needed to represent restore power and rescue people. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at oakland airport where local crews are flying out. amy. >> kristen, firefighters are on

a flight scheduled to be departing right now out of oakland. pg&e workers are packing up today for a departure tomorrow. they all want to get to the area as soon as they can and as soon as the storm passes through they can rush through and help. there's a sense of duty and a range of other emotions as pg&e employees back up to head to florida. i'm excited and they are vows. there's a lot of unknowns and forward to facing the unknown hurdles as they come towards us. >> the storm hasn't even hit yet, but the utility workers in florida are already predicting they will need help restoring power, and they called northern california because of a three-year-old alliance. >> in 2014 we signed a cross-continent mutual aid agreement with florida power and light that essentially says should there be a disaster either in florida or in pg&e's territory we're there for each other and we will be there to support one another. >> in a briefing this morning,

workers talked about the humid weather they will face and the f having each other's backs. they then worked to fit the tool from their tax into the pods that will board the flight with them tomorrow. >> brought the climbing tools. >> they are not the only ones headed to the bay area. 50 oakland firefighters with the urban search and rescue team are flying out today. another two dozen are driving. they were headed home from houston when they got the call. >> things with irma changed after we were headed home and we turned around. >> the bay area crews tell us they don't know how long they will be in florida. they will wait and assess the situation. live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> a bay area animal rescue organization will take in animals orphaned by hurrican irma. tony larussa's arn is

pets in. for more information about adoptions and everything you need to know about hurrican irma, download the abc 7 news app and enable push alerts. a school community is mourning the untimely and unbelievable death of jerry dounts, a beloved band director in pacifica. downs was killed yesterday when his own parked van hit him in the parking lot of ingrid b. lacey middle school. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live at the school. tiffany. >> reporter: kristen, the memorial has grope throughout the morning as dozen of students have stopped by to pay their respects. for many this is their first exposure to death and you can tell jerry downs' students are devastated by his loss. hey lone and in groups, mourners approach the memorial. many offered flowers. others just looked on in shock. >> everyone really loved him. >> reporter: jerry downs spent the last 15 years as band director at ingrid b. lacey middle school and ocean shore elementary. parents say kids would enter his

class not knowing anything about music and leave -- >> like a real musician because of mr. jerry downs. >> reporter: he doubt mr. gustavo's son. >> he used to give money from his pocket that commit kids to learn music, with instruments and clothing foreperformances and everything. he was a great guy and just shocked about how everything happened. >> reporter: pacifica police say downs' van rolled and hit him in a freak accident in the school parking lot yesterday. he died at the hospital. the sad news quickly spread. >> the students he taught were all crying and devastated. >> reporter: downs' students say his legacy will never be forgotten. >> he taught me how to read music and bass clarinet and in eighth grade i moved on to be drum major and leader of the band. >> reporter: hand now kayla flared in the terra nova band.

>> such a great person. i wouldn't be here where i am today if i wasn't for him. >> reporter: grief counsellors are on hand and they have been bringing student out to the memorial all morning long. so far there are no funeral arrangements. live in pacific as. tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> tiffany, thank you. new this morning, an east bay fire captain reportedly under arrest on child porn charges. the contra costa county sheriff's office says richard chew is being held at the martinez detention facility on $200,000. investigators say child porn was found on chew's computer. our media partner "the mercury news" says the 58-year-old is a captain with the oakland fire department. we have reached out to oakland fire. the department says it will issue a statement later today. in union city police have just released this sketch of of a sexual battery suspect. take a look. this man accused of groping a woman t.happened monday on a walking trail on union city boulevard. the man asked her if she wanted

to be her friend and grabbed her. the suspect ran off when they heard the sundays of a dispatch on a cell phone. >> a judge says mcmath may be technically alive and ruled a lawsuit against children's hospital in oakland can proceed. the hospital argued mcmath could not seek damages because the county coroner signed a death certificate in 2014. the case has been at the center of a medical debate after the mother refused to remove her from life support. president trump made a tweet at urging of house minority leader nancy pelosi. the tweet says for all of those that daca that are concerned about your status during the six-month period.

now to a parenting alert about a new device to prevent vaporing in school bathrooms, it's called fly sense. it monitors sound levels and air quality. for example, if noise levels spike in the bathroom or the air changes because a student is smoking e-cigarettes the fly sense detects those changes t.immediately cents a text alert to school officials.

as hurrican irma barrels towards florida fema is using something you might not expect to determine the storm's impact. if you know waffle house, you know it never closes, not even on christmas, so the logic is if waffle shuts down after a hurricane it's a sign that the damage is really bad. in fact, fema even operates with three levels on the waffle house index, green, the restaurant is opening and offering a full menu, yellow, the waffle house is opened and only offering a limited menu. a quick google search shows there's 133 waffle house locations in florida. no word yet if any plan to close because of hurrican irma. now, mike, i know you lived in waffle house territory. do you feel like that's an accurate index in. >> according to a friend of mine who works for fema it is true. it came about because a lot of emergency responders eat there

because it's the only thing open. >> 24/7, sure. >> that's how it came about. >> they have got it tough. i know you're looking at that, but you're also looking at this -- i don't want to call a stra strange, but rain. >> let's take a look at what's going on. from tropical storm lydia itself, moisture hanging around and here's a look at san reaf ale and and can you see the traffic is still slow because of the dampness on 101. point raize had .1 of an inch. kentfield is one of the big winners at the lower levels as it always is. berkeley hills .03 and novato and santa rosa .01. did gum up traffic this morning and gumming trying to get into sfo on time. arrival delays are averaging an hour and 33 minutes. cooler for all of us, even if you don't get the light showers. you'll get the cooler weather.

cool tonight and a little bit of drizzle possible in the hills and along the coast and dryer and warmer air is coming for weekend. here's a look at our 24-hour temperature change. all of us are cool ker, even up to 10 to 12 degrees cooler in concord and fairfield. puts us mainly in the 60s and 0s. still stuck in the 50s. gives you an idea that warm air mass is nowhere near us anymore. mid to upper 60s along the coast and low to mid-70s up into the bay and a few upper 70s in the south bay and upper 70s to an 80 or two. sunshine later this afternoon to help warm the temperatures as the chance of a shower will start to taper after say 2:00 or 3:00. 8:00 it will be mostly cloudy and by midnight cloudy with patchy drizzle and temperatures already in the low to mid-60s. best radar returns over the north bay and a few down along the coast in the santa cruz mountains, peninsula mountains and the hills, through about 3:00 and then everything just

kind of quiets down by 7:00 and overnight watch a little green spec here and there develops along the coast. that's the drizzle for tomorrow morning. lows even cooler for tomorrow. 57 in santa rosa to about 62 in san jose and 61 in oakland and 64 in antioch and that's the warm spot. let me show you changes in my seven-day accuweather forecast. humidity still higher than normal. the drier air comes in saturday and that's when we warm back to average. it will be hot and dry sunday and into monday but we'll be watching an area of low pressure again coming at us, the same one this one is and cooler weather for tuesday and wednesday. we'll keep an eye on it. >> happening now, it's the first chance for dub nation to get tickets for the upcoming season. the dubs kick off next month. season ticket holders got top priority. warriors insiders get their chance at it can this afternoon
