another natural disaster unfolding in central america tonight. >> a powerful 8.0 earthquake struck off mexico's southern coast. it was felt in mexico city where there have been widespread power outages. >> active tsunami warning are issued for mexico, gaut mall ah and neighboring countries. you can see the light fixture swaying violently. >> residents have gathered on the streets in the dark, fearing that buildings would collapse. our meteorologist sandhya patel has more on the earthquake as well as the tu namy warning. >> let's look at this earthquake. it is being revised. this is the very latest coming out of the earthquake and tsunami center. it is upgraded to it was originally 8.1 when it struck off the coast of there's no threat to oregon.

they're investigating the threat to hawaii, which is under investigation. a threat to the u.s. main land is hurricane arm ah, a powerful category five storm. it is more ragged after it ripped through the turks and caicos. this is prompting warning for parts of florida. maximum sustained winds with this powerful storm right now 160 miles an hour, expected to amove across the bahamas tomorrow evening and striking southern florida saturday evening through sunday. drench ink rain expected to be the biggest threat with this. we also have hurricane jose threatening the leeward islands and hurricane katia working its way to the east coast of mexico. >> thank you, sandhya. >> irma claimed at least 13 lives already and devastated several caribbean islands including barbuda, where 95% of the buildings have been damaged. >> and tonight this photo shows

the enormity of the threat posed by hurricane irma, taken by a nasa astronaut watching the storm from space. >> incredible image. let's begin with abc news reporter marcy gonzales in new smyrna beach, florida. >> hi, dan, ama. at least one shelter in south florida is at capacity. people are taking the warning seriously, especially now after seeing what this storm is capable of. hurricane irma cutting a catastrophic path through the caribbean. >> how are we going to survive after this? >> the monstrous category five storm devastating st. martin, damaging nearly everything on the tiny island of barbuda. >> the entire country has been decimated. >> reporter: and leaving about half of puerto rico without power. >> we were praying the whole time. >> reporter: still hospitals there taking in some of the injured rescued from neighboring isorida for what the governor warns will likely

be an historic disaster. >> remember hurricane andrew as one of the worst storms in the history of florida. this storm is much worse. >> reporter: from the gulf to atlantic coast, more than a million people in the sunshine state ordered to evacuate. >> i'm very scared so i'm trying to get as far north as possible. >> airports over crowded. >> no one really manning the desks. pretty chaotic. >> reporter: traffic stretching for miles. the wait for gas hours long with stations running out. >> pretty much on full but i want to top off just in case. >> reporter: more lines for plywood and essentials. >> i still have yet to find water. >> reporter: many store shelves left empty in the rush to get ready ahead of this deadly storm. >> i'm ready. all you can do is be prepared and ready for it. >> reporter: and to give families time to prepare and to evacuate, classes and every public school in the state are cancelled for tomorrow. in new smyrna beach, florida, marcy gonzales, "abc 7 news" well, talk about no rest for the weary.

right after local rescuers returned home from hurricane harvey in texas. >> yeah, other members now of their team are headed to the path of hurricane irma in florida. "abc 7 news" reporter katie marzullo joins us live from menlo park with more. katie. >> reporter: ama, dan, take a look at this truck. it is one much ten vehicles leaving tonight. you can hear the engine running now, leaving for florida. all of that gear plus dozens of first responders all headed to hurricane number two. 60,000 pounds of gear was preparing to leave menlo park thursday night headed for florida and hurricane irma. 80 members of the search and rescue team are going. >> this is what we do. we sign up for this kind of stuff because we like to help. >> reporter: chris mosco is driving one of the trucks cross country. he got his deployment orders only a few hours after he returned from ten days in texas. he has no idea what awaits him in florida. >> since we've been on the road we haven't been able to keep on -- all we know is that it is

half of the u.s. population, maybe you. ek which fax, one of three major credit burros, could be the victim of the largest security breach ever involving social security numbers. "abc 7 news" reporter lisa amin gulezian is here to explain what it may mean to you. >> reporter: it means we should all be careful. we all use something like ek which fax to apply for a credit card, get a lone or rent the apartment. some employers use them to check you out before hiring you. there's a lot of personal information they have on all of us. >> i just worry about someone taking my identity and it is very scary. >> reporter: this is exactly what nearly 143 million people could face now that equifax's files have been hacked. the breach lasted a month and a half. equifax found out about it july 29th, but only went public today. >> it is clearly a disappointing event and one that strikes at the heart of who we are and what we do. i deeply regret this incident and i apologize to every

affected consumer. >> sorry does not cut it if my information has been stolen and my identity has been compromised. that does not -- it does not fit the bill. >> reporter: equifax is offering a way to find out. at this message says your personal information was not impacted. another says you may have been impacted. this one, which is causing frustration, simply tells you to enroll in their free credit monitoring service. a customer service rep told me the company knows this message is confusing and that enrolling is highly recommended to those users for a reason. jeff bliscall is a fraud and credit report expert. >> it is all of your personal, social security, the most sensitive stuff. they really should have better security i would think. >> reporter: so what should you

do? aside from using equifax's free offer of identity theft protection, he suggests putting a security freeze on your credit reports. this way no one can open an account in your name. we also have a link on our website at abc7news.com if you want to see if you've been compromised. dan. >> all right. that's helpful information, lisa. lisa amin gulezian. equifax's stock value plummeted more than 12% since word of the breach went public and at least three company executives sold off stock before that happened. they all sold e kwurks uifax stock for at least $145 per share in early august. they discovered the breach in late july. tonight eqiifax's stock has fallen to $124.80 per share in after hours trading. prosecutors must now decide if fourteen age boys will face arson charges after a wildfire sparked by illegal fireworks near gilroy. that fire broke out near the eagle ridge housing development on sunday evening. the fire is now fully contained

african-americans and lgbtq people. >> reporter: the mayor cut the ribbon for the center which will providee range of services, mental health, substance abuse cancelling and transgender advocacy. >> this center gives real assistance and hope, support, comfort, safety to this incredible community. >> reporter: what the center doesn't have is funding. >> right now we don't have any money. we've been funding this thing out of our own pockets. >> reporter: but there were surprise gifts. a check from the aids health care foundation for $10,000 and another for $1,000 from oakland pride. until they can hire employees, 200 volunteers have stepped up to help out. in oakland, cornell barnard, "abc 7 news" northern california's four biggest cities appear to be contenders to serve as amazon's second headquarters. they plan to make their second headquarters coequal to its existing main office in seattle. the online giant plans to spend

update now on the massive quake off the shores of southern mexico. this is a live feed from a television network in mexico. officials say the quake is a magnitude 8.2, that's shifted up and down a little bit. that's to be expected with a quake this size. tsunami waves are forecast for coastal areas of mexico and seven other central american countries. there has been heavy damage to buildings in the southern part of mexico. right now no reports of injuries or fatalities however. you can download the "abc 7 news" app and enable push alerts for the latest developments and tune in to "abc 7 news" starting at 4:30 a.m. they'll have the latest on it for you absolutely. all right. for now we need to transition to sports. >> yeah. football tonight, larry. >> yeah, cease wron is under way. never thought i would write this sentence. alex smith out duels tom brady. but the season kicked off tonight in stunning fashion.
