hurricane irma has weakened slightly with its maximum winds now at 160 miles per hour. but it is still a dangerous category five storm. and right now it's heading between cuba and the bahamas. hurricane force winds can be felt as far as 75 miles from the center of the storm. and the huge storm surge is also a very real danger to both areas. the u.s. consulate general in curacao says it believes about 6,000 americans are stranded on st. martin. they are getting more frantic as hurricane jose is threatening a second blow to tourist destinations. this morning we're finding

out what's making irma so powerful and dangerous. cbs abc's senior meteorologist rob marciano has more from key largo, florida. >> reporter: irma's first strike giving us a glimpse of its sheer power. morphing into a monster with a rare combination of conditions, moist air over deep, warm water with temperatures over a degree above average feed the storm. there's also a lack of upper-level winds that would choke the storm. it has avoided large land masses that would break apart the hurricane. >> it is like going over a giant all you can eat buffet for a hurricane right now. >> reporter: the eye 30 miles wide with it 600 miles across. with the inner core equivalent to an ef-3 tornado. the record-breaking stretch of 185 mile-per-hour sustained

winds for over 36 hours. hurricane irma continues to churn to the u.s. as a remarkably strong hurricane and florida is preparing for the worst. most of the coastal communities especially here in the southern part of the state under mandatory evacuation orders. we expect a storm surge of 7 to 10 feet. that would certainly bring the water up and over my head. the fluctuation of track has everyone on edge and most people are prepared. most have made their way on the road if they're not staying at home. and most of those shouldn't. rob marciano, abc news, key largo, florida. >> you definitely don't want to ride out this storm. anybody who is trying to, they say not to tape the windows, it doesn't do much good. never run a generator indoors or use a charcoal or gas grill indoors. huge carbon monoxide risks there. and don't walk in floodwaters. they can hide all sorts of things, snakes, power lines, you name it. when we come back, the big news from janet jackson about her stop in houston.

good morning, i'm diane macedo. >> and i'm nick watt in for kendis gibson. we are following two breaking stories this hour. forecasters expect hurricane irma to make landfall late saturday night or early sunday morning. it could diminish to a category four by then. irma has the potential to catastrophically devastate the state. and five join as one to support the victims of harvey. the five living former presidents are appealing to americans to support the victims of that devastating hurricane. a powerful earthquake has hit mexico's pacific coast as authorities evaluate a tsunami threat. the magnitude 8.1 quake was felt 600 miles away in mexico city. several aftershocks have also followed. damage and injuries are reported in oaxaca.

we'll keep you posted. and sloane stephens come back from the brink to beat venus williams. she will meet madison keys in the final. those are some of our top stories this friday, september 8th. from abc news, this is "world news now." there's a massive relief effort under way in several caribbean countries, and preparations in florida right now, with hurricane irma showing few signs of slowing down. >> the storm is 500 miles from miami and moving straight toward the city. maximum winds have diminished slightly, but irma is still a very dangerous, category five storm. >> roads and highways out of florida are clogged. more than a million people have been ordered to evacuate south florida. and those who didn't drive out are looking for flights out.

airlines are looking to fly in bigger jets to evacuate people. seats are still very hard to find. u.s. officials believe many americans are stranded on st. martin. the state department's trying to figure out how to get them off the island as soon as possible. irma is now making its way past the bahamas and james longman is there. >> reporter: preparations for irma are well under way hire. airports have started to cancel flights, which means people who want to get off this island, time is running out for them. across the caribbean, at least ten people have been killed and thousands left homeless. devastation in st. martin, the u.s. virgin islands and barbuda where 95% of homes have been destroyed. the storm is moving across turks and caicos and is expected in the bahamas shortly after that. it's 600 miles wide. it may cause ocean surges of 20 feet. people on the islands are used to bad weather, but this is unprecedented. diane and nirk.

nick. >> james, thanks very much. irma is expected to make landfall late tomorrow or early sunday morning in miami. >> the latest for examples almost all show it hitting miami itself and continuing through florida over land. that will weaken the storm somewhat. but the state can still expect powerful winds, heavy rain and a huge storm surge. >> residents are taking the threat very seriously. and marci gonzales is there. >> reporter: people are trying to take advantage of the last clear skies to get ready. already a million people in florida around both coasts and around lake okeechobee have been ordered to evacuate, and that is leading to major traffic jams and long lines for gas with nearly 30% of gas stations running out of fuel already. >> pretty much full but i want to top off in case. >> remember hurricane andrew, one of the worst storms in the history of florida. this storm is much worse.

>> reporter: store shelves are empty, and people have been waiting for hours to buy plywood and water. essential preparations for those staying behind, while others are still trying to catch flights out of the state. >> i was able to buy a one-way ticket to memphis. all the tickets were sold out. now i'll figure it out once i get to memphis. >> reporter: airlines have sent bigger jets in, adding 6,000 seats out of florida. but there are big crowds and lots of frustration at airports and time is running out for the evacuation plan. because all of the major airlines will stop their flights out of south florida this evening. nick and diane? >> marci, thank you. good luck to all those people trying to get out. let's get more on the storm's path and power from accuweather's justin povick. what's latest? >> the latest is the projection still taking this into south florida like you said, a very powerful, large hurricane, much larger than what we saw with

andrew. winds still 160 miles per hour. and we're talking about devastation throughout the central bahamas. northern cuban coast looking at severe impacts. then it makes the bend off to the north. and we're looking at landfall early sunday morning in the vicinity of miami. that's the latest projected path. but we're still concerned about the impacts further off to the north into northern florida and into the carolinas where we're going to have gusty and in some cases damaging winds and dangerous flash flooding. nick? diane? >> and i know we were also watching the two other hurricanes forming in the atlantic, katia and jose. it sounds like jose is strengthening. anything to worry about there so far? >> yes, with jose we are concerned. much smaller storm when you compare the two between irma and hoe say. he jose. but notice its proximity to the islands devastated not too long ago. friday night into saturday, saturday night into sunday for

that potential of hurricane force winds. worst-case scenario, over 100-mile-per-hour winds. this would cause additional devastating impacts. a very, very sad situation potentially here, again, toward barbuda and anguilla. >> thanks very much for that, justin. now with concerns of the hurricane in miami, now they are worried about the winds. >> high rises were built according to strict codes, but the question is, can they stand up to irma's predicted winds? abc's tom llamas went searching for answers. >> reporter: miami's glass towers and the cranes that build them causing concern. hurricane irma could shatter it all. >> those are big targets out there. >> again, we're going to lose buildings that are going to have to be repaired, but i don't think buildings are going to completely collapse. >> reporter: 25 cranes are being secured. and those who live near them

told to evacuate. developers and builders abc news spoke with told us buildings in downtown miami will hold up but high-rises could sway some up to 12 inches. >> i do expect to feel some here. we did feel it during matthew, and it was basically a tropical storm. >> reporter: being in a high rise, you're less likely to get hit by debris. but the wind up here is much more powerful. hurricane researchers tell us that high up a category four hurricane with wind the at 140 miles per hour would be 250 miles up high. this south beach resident will ride out the storm in his condo. >> my plan is it gets too crazy to go to the elevator shaft of the building which is like a fortress. >> reporter: other miami residents are like up for supplies. in some stores, even water is getting tough to find. >> and as people prepare for hurricane irma, there are

reports of price gouging throughout the state of florida. the office of the attorney general tells me they've received 4,000 complaints since monday. tom llamas, abc news, miami beach. and a teenager surfing off the coast of barbados was killed as hurricane irma tore through the caribbean. >> the friend of the 16-year-old says the boy was a pro surfer who died in a freak accident when a certain type of wave dumped itself directly on top of him and sucked him under. >> it completely surrounded him. hurricane irma hasn't reached the u.s. but is already giving us story the of compassion. >> this is pam and ramon, they were strangers until he gave her the generator he just bought. brecky had spent days searching for a generator to take care of her sick father. >> she broke into tears when it santiago bought what turned out to be the last one in the store.

finally able to get that fire extinguished. and today the house is expected to easily pass a $15 billion aid package for victims of hurricane harvey after it was overwhelmingly approved by the senate. it nearly doubles president trump's initial request for relief for harvey, and it appears the deal he made with democrats to avert a government shutdown for three months. the white house is getting rid of campus sex assault policies created by the obama administration. education secretary betsy devos says survivors must be taken seriously. she emphasized guilt must not be predetermined for those who are accused. and the trump administration has sided with a colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple on religious grounds. it will be argued before the supreme court this fall. the justice department filed a

brief in support of jack phillips who was found to have violated colorado's antidiscrimination laws. and a group of harvard professors spending the night in jail. after being arrested protesting the president's rescinding of the daca program. they stopped traffic near harvard's campus to express anger over the president's rescinding of the program that protects undocumented immigrants who came as children. pope francis is calling on people to help their country heal. more than a million people flocked to an open-air mass in bogota. he told them to look to the future without burden of hatred. colombians remain deeply divided over a peace deal with leftist rebels that brought an end to a half a century-long conflict. with hurricane irma hours away from hitting florida, we're looking back at another historic hurricane. >> we'll compare irma to andrew next.

hurricane irma is on a collision course with south florida. landfall is expected late tomorrow night or early sunday as a category four before it heads north. >> and more than a million florida residents have been ordered to evacuate. many others want to leave as well. the airlines are assigning bigger jets to their flights to try to carry more passengers, but it's still tough to get a flight. northbound highways are jammed and gas shortages are reported as far north as jacksonville and forget about amtrak. it's canceled trains. hurricane andrew destroyed more than 25,000 homes. >> but we want to look at this graphic. that's hurricane andrew in

comparison to irma now. you can see andrew was only about half the size of what irma is right now. and that's especially alarming if you remember the level of devastation from hurricane andrew. again, that picture is just incredible. two days after andrew first hit florida, that was when we started seeing the extent of the devastation there. let's take a look back at that coverage from the abc news vault. ♪ >> this is world news tonight with peter jennings. >> in florida, where the hurricane wreaked so much havoc monday morning, an insurance agent in miami said there's a pattern after disasters like this. first you only think of is survival, then comes the accept of loss and you later think about rebuilding. in southern florida most people are at the second stage, stunned by the loss. and there are a lot more people who lost their homes than everybody first believed.

here's abc's al dale. >> reporter: officials now estimate that there are at least 180,000 homeless in florida. that's the size of dayton, ohio and glendale, california. >> i lost everything i own except a few trinkets. >> reporter: while some people are trying to stay with what remains of their homes, thousands are lining up at emergency shelters. this is the only one in homestead, one of the hardest-hit areas. >> took 25 years to build, two and a half hours to destroy. >> five-month old baby. >> reporter: there's no way to tell how many of these homeless will find homes in the future and how many will require long-term care. for now there are an abundance of shortages and a shortage of one thing -- need. al dale, abc news, homestead, florida. ♪ this is abc news "nightline." reporting from washington.

reality is setting in. >> i can say that right now we have food. we have water. supplies we salvaged and kept. but today we don't need anything. tomorrow's going to be a different story. >> reporter: help may be a long time coming. this is linda pattillo for "nightline" in homestead, florida. >> it's important to remember and terrifying to think that andrew caused $25 billion worth of damage in florida alone and claimed 26 lives in the u.s. >> and additional people died as a result of the storm but sort of not directly because of it. i just want to look at the image again. we want to look at the size of irma in comparison to andrew. this means even those areas not directly in line with the eye of the storm will still experience extremely powerful winds. so for those of you thinking we can just ride this storm out, if you were in evacuation zone, please heed those orders. >> the way we're seeing that cone, it is all of florida.

from abc news, this is "world news now." a good morning to you all. we begin with a new track for hurricane irma, less than 600 miles from miami. >> maximum winds are 165 miles per hour, less than they've been, but irma is still a very powerful storm. hurricane force winds extend out as much as 75 miles from the center. overnight the eye of the hurricane is expected to continue west towards the bahamas. it now appears on a path for a direct hit on miami, late saturday night or early sunday. >> irma has just passed turks and caicos, pummeling the islands and leaving new worries about flooding from the very high storm surge. meanwhile, in florida, 1.2 million people are under evacuation orders. all public schools and colleges are closed today and monday due to the storm. >> and airlines are flying larger planes in to help get more people out. abc's marci gonzalez is there.

and as we mentioned, the predicted path for irma has changed a little bit. >> let's get an update from justin povick. morning, justin. >> nick and diane. hurricane irma here has grown more in size. not a small hurricane, but a rather large. you can see the ominous look here, the well-defined eye. the movement continues here off to the west-northwest, very high wind speeds. this remains a category five and very, very damaging, devastating impacts tonight throughout the southeastern bahamas, but also notice where we have hurricane warnings over southern florida. we're talking about big impacts throughout the bahamas, into cuba as we go throughout the day, and notice the onset of the hurricane force winds here as we get to the evening hours on saturday. this makes its move a sure, southern florida, south or southwest of miami as a category four. we're concerned about a damaging storm surge as well as flooding rains and damaging winds. diane, nick. >> justin, thanks.

and florida power and light says it's shutting down its two nuclear power plants before irma comes to shore. >> the turkey point and st. lucie generate power for nearly 2 million homes. the exact closure times are still to be decided. turkey point may close tonight and st. lucie early tomorrow morning. fema is warning that between hurricaney harve and irma, the emergency response fund is almost completely depleted. >> fema is burning through about $200 million a day. that's an average of $8 million an hour. >> now the house has approved nearly $8 billion toward harvey disaster relief, which fema says isn't nearly enough to cover those costs. >> more coverage of irma ahead minutes away. in the next half hour, a full report from our reporters in the bahamas. also breaking right now, a powerful earthquake has struck off the pacific coast of mexico. preliminary measurements say the quake was magnitude 8. >> it was centered offshore with the border of guatemala. but residents were shaken out of

their beds. some have lost power. >> the national weather service says hazardous tsunami waves are possible for the entire central american coast. there are no major cities closest to where the quake was centered. and president trump is not ruling out the possibility of war with north korea. the president said yesterday military action would certainly be an option but he would prefer not going that route. he added that an attack by the u.s. would be a very sad day for north korea and refused to say if he would accept a scenario in which the north was contained without giving up its nuclear weapons. democrats say donald trump jr.'s appearance before the senate judiciary leaves them with more questions than answers. he was grilled for hours behind closed doors. mainly about his meeting with a russian lawyer, and he insisted he did not collude with russia. mary bruce has the details from capitol hill. >> reporter: this is the only glimpse of donald trump jr. we got. reporters craning for a closer

look. but his five-hour meeting with congressional investigators shrouded in secrecy. a prime focus, that trump tower meeting during the campaign with a russian lawyer, set up after an acquaintance told don junior the lawyer had dirt on hillary clinton. the president's son responded, if it's what you say, i love it. don junior told the committee he took the meeting because to the extent they had information concerning the fitness, character or qualifications of a presidential candidate, i believed that i should at least hear them out. don junior has described the meeting as par for the course in a political campaign. >> for me, this was opposition research. >> reporter: he says nothing came of it and sources told investigators there was no collusion and he never told his father about the meeting. >> reporter: did donald trump jr. sway some of your concerns? >> there are still a lot of gaps and a lot of questions to be

answered. >> reporter: donald trump jr.'s story has been evolving over time, but in a statement i says he answered every question here and trusts he fully satisfied the committee. but lawmakers i spoke to said they want to hear from him again, this time in public. mary bruce, abc news, capitol hill. the fbi is investigating a massive hack that may have compromised credit information for nearly half the country. equifax had a breach between may and july potentially exposing personal data for 143 million people, and that includes social security numbers. canadian and uk residents were also affected. days after the hack was discovered, three equifax employees sold stock. but they say they did not know about the hack at the time. the oregon wildfire that's already scorch the more than 50 square miles, the fire is now 5% contained.

we are keeping a very close eye on hurricane irma, moving overnight between the bahamas and cuba. its winds are strong enough that both will suffer damage. the center passed right over turks and caicos, but the worst may yet to come. >> the islands are very low-lying. irma's storm surge could flood even inland areas, and more than 1.2 million people in south florida have been ordered to evacuate. the national hurricane center has just issued more warnings for more of south florida.

extending 75 miles out from the center. >> many u.s. virgin islands are blocked. these are new images we are getting in from st. thomas. >> and at least 14 deaths are blamed on the storm. abc's linzie janis is in puerto rico. >> reporter: there are hundreds of trees down. this one has a power line in it. hurricane irma claimed three hours in puerto rico, but elsewhere in the caribbean t was much more destructive. we spoke to pilots who were doing rescue missions to the island. they introduced us to two young women who they rescued from st. thomas. we spoke to them. their names alex demore and maddie gortat. they were worried the roof was

going to come off the home they were in. when the storm was over, they went outside to survey the damage. they described utter destruction, but alex slipped and fell, hitting her head, she was in and out of consciousness, but they couldn't get to a hospital on the island. they were forced to call the coast guard and wait for the following morning for rescue. we lent them our phones to call family. we accompanied them to the hospital. while we were there, the backup generator actually failed. so the power outages, a huge problem here. nick and diane. >> linzie, thank you very much. the latest track shows it taking a direct hit on miami. >> many residents are under evacuation orders. many are driving, and that means traffic on highs into georgia was three teams the usual volume. >> and people are desperate to catch flights. this shows planes flying around irma.

and the other two hurricanes. major operations are suspending by tonight. we have more on the mass exodus. here's giegio benitez. >> started crawling. we're stopped right now. >> reporter: heavy traffic clogging major florida highways. >> we're just trying to get out of harm's way, get ahead of the storm. >> i know many of you are stuck in traffic. evacuations are not meant to be convenient. they are meant to keep you safe. >> reporter: officials in key west telling residents staying behind is dangerous and irresponsible. >> we're running out of time. the opportunity to leave is now. >> reporter: some in the keys fleeing by free shuttle bus to a miami shelter. on the only road out of the keys, people abandoning their cars near elevated bridges, hoping to avoid flooding. many on the road facing fuel shortages. nearly 39% of gas stations in

devastating impacts through the next several hours. the tropical storm force winds well out here. as we venture to the upcoming weekend. and the hurricane-force winds will cover much of the state as well. as we get to saturday night and sunday. that's when the worst will be impacting florida. we're talking about landfall here around miami. that's the most likely scenario at this point. nick, diane? >> and justin, how strong is it going to be when it hits miami? category four? >> category four, category five. both are extremely powerful. >> and with so many people near florida, what do you expect for the other parts of the state in is area? there an agreed-on trajectory in

go this is not a good scenario there could potentially be a second landfall as we get toward georgia or the coastal carolinas. it's something we'll continue to monitor closely. not a good situation at all. justin, thank you. many in florida are leaving their homes. some in shelters in south florida are already full. >> one shelter in pompano beach reached capacity less than three hours after opening. emergency officials warn the longer people wait to seek shelter, the more difficult for them to find it. >> and for now, florida's amusement parks are operating under normal conditions. have no plans to shutdown or change hours. but disneyworld, universal orlando and seaworld say that could change depending on irma's path. each park says it will refund or reschedule for those who decide not to come this weekend.

and more on irma, how this storm became the most-powerful ever in the atlantic. donald trump junior has declared that his meeting with congressional investigators fully satisfied their inquiry. staffers questioned the president's son for five hours behind closed doors. he told them he took the meeting with the russian lawyer because he wanted to find out about hillary clinton's fitness for office. he said he did not tell his father about the meeting. democrats are calling for him to testify in public. military analysis of the north korea nuclear blast shows it was more powerful than first reported. the blast from north korea was more powerful than first reported. the blast produced an explosive yield of 140 kilotons. for comparison, the hiroshima bomb measured 15 kilotons. president trump is not ruling out military action against north korea, but says he would prefer not to go that route.
