means service disruptions starting this weekend. >> a lot to get to this morning. we also are tracking some breaking news. >> firefighters in the east bay are investigating an early morning fire where they had to rescue a woman from a burning home. amy hollyfield is live on the scene in pleasant hill. amy. >> reporter: hi, matt. yeah, they tell me they don't know if she's going to make it. they tell me the 69-year-old woman is on a breathing machine at the hospital. they say she could not get out of this home. they could hear her banging on the walls, begging for help. firefighters say they had trouble getting to her because of all the stuff in the home. they consider this a hoarder situation. her 71-year-old husband did make it out. the next door neighbor saw him as he frantically worried about his wife. >> we got out here and the neighbor was just getting out. he was shouting that he couldn't find his wife and she was still trapped in the house. so we were out here for probably 20 to 30 minutes while they were trying to cut open the roof, try to find her and get her out of

the house. pretty nerve-racking time. >> firefighters got the call about this fire on silvia drive in pleasant hill at 2:15 this morning. the homeowner reported hearing an explosion from the garage. firefighters are now focusing on the barbecue in there and its propane tank as a possible cause. the homeowner said they had tried to start it earlier in the day. the husband suffered from smoke inhalation, but firefighters say he refused treatment. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. let's get over to meteorologist mike nicco for a check of your weather. >> hi, everybody. let's talk more about the fog as it continues to spread throughout the north bay, and it's getting thicker in some spots like the three-quarter-mile visibility right there with live doppler 7. three miles in half moon bay, and you can see the fog and mist from our roof camera here in downtown san francisco, looking down the embarcadero to the bay bridge. so 59 to 62, cooler this morning. mid 60s, the lower numbers,

those are for the coast. 71 to 74, the bay. 61 to 72, a pretty comfortable evening coming at you. look for more sunshine and drier weather this afternoon. here's alexis. >> we're looking pretty good still this morning, mike. a live look outside at the richmond side of the richmond-san rafael bridge. this turned into a tough one yesterday later in the commute. a quick check of drive times this morning, too. westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze, in the green. and southbound 101, in the green at just about nine minutes. i will talk a little more about that project that will disrupt muni service this weekend coming up in less than ten. >> thank you. on to developing news now. two natural disasters, hurricane irma is threatening millions in southern florida. we're going to start with a deadly earthquake in mexico. the quake had a magnitude 8.1. it struck last night near the mexican border with guatemala. it was felt 450 miles away in mexico city.

authorities updated the death toll to at least 15. the quake caused a huge traffic jam. notice freeway lights waving there. people ran out onto the street. the quake knocked out power in lots of neighborhoods. there have been five aftershocks as well. 4.9 or stronger. >> developing news this morning, unprecedented evacuations are under way in south florida as hurricane irma approaches the state. the catastrophic storm has claimed the lives of at least 13 people in the caribbean. overnight, the storm was downgraded to a category 4 with sustained winds at 150 miles per hour. but the national hurricane center says irma is expected to strengthen in the next two days. shelters are filling up in miami-dade and broward counties. more than a million floridians are under a mandatory evacuation order in eight counties. officials are advising residents to find shelter by tonight and remain there. >> i didn't want to chance anything. i would rather be here early, get a place so i can have a place to stay and not wait around for the last minute. i just was too nervous watching tv about thinking about what could happen.

>> eight shelters are open in miami-dade with 13 additional shelters slated to open today. >> as of tomorrow, no one will be able to leave the miami and f lotter dade area on a commercial flight. the airports will be closed through monday and even later perhaps. the mad rush to leave continues and abc7 news was at sfo yesterday. we met a passenger escaping florida to come here. >> everyone is panicking. houses all boarded up, the neighborhoods boarded up. >> are you crying because you're happy to be here? >> happy to be here and worried about home. >> one travel agent says it may take passengers a long time to return home. >> a quick update here. crazy numbers we have been watching throughout the morning. i have been keeping my eye on the misery map from flight aware and checking numbers. just got new ones here on my laptop. 1,409 u.s. flights canceled, mainly starting this afternoon. and already, even more canceled for tomorrow. that number has also gone up since i last told you about that

earlier in the newscast. now at nearly 1500 flights canceled for tomorrow. all of those mainly coming from florida and miami would be the airport that's most impacted. then ft. lauderdale, and you see some kind of going up the state there, but it's going to have a ripple effect all across the country. that's the fear, already some local flights canceled out of sfo and oakland. if you're traveling east in general, and mike, it's going to be a nightmare for a lot of states. you want to check ahead of your flights. >> that's a great point because this storm is headed for atlanta now tuesday morning atlanta, hartsfield jackson international airport, our busiest airport. we have to be aware of that. i will be tracking that, and so will jessica come next week. here's a look at the eye from the visible satellite. it's kind of open, over open water which is good because that's the heart of the storm. over the last 24 hours, it has weakened ever so slightly down to about 150 miles per hour.

still a category 4. and still going to slam into the keys at about 2:00 sunday morning their time. rake miami, ft. lauderdale, melbournic about 2:00 monday morning along with disney world there and orlando, jacksonville, and there you go, there's the difference. it slams into atlanta as a tropical storm come tuesday morning. 15 inches of rain possible on the florida peninsula to about 5 in atlanta. so flooding will become an issue also. >> thank you for tracking that. i know you'll keep us posted. >> developing news in gilroy where prosecutors must decide if four teenage boys will face arson charges after a fire sparked by fireworks. the fire is now fully contained, but it did char about 100 acres. police say the boys are 14 and 15 years old. officers brought them in for questioning but then released them to their parents. >> developing news in san francisco. mayor ed lee has announced an assistance plan for businesses impacted by city improvement projects like the central subway

project. up to $10,000 in city subsidies would be make available to businesses that are losing income because of crews working outside their stores. the money must be used for certain improvements such as new fixtures, furnishings, and technology upgrades. chinatown businesses have been especially effected. >> the santa clara county supervisor is calling for a new civilian oversight body tocopy an eye on county law enforcement and corrections. the next step in reforms after the murder of an inmate at santa clara county's main jail in 2015. the proposed office would over see the county patrol and corrections divisions and day to day operations, make policy recommendations and conduct community outreach and mediation. the board of supervisors is expected to hear the proposal on tuesday. >> new video shows how tense it is in florida. the showdown caught on camera as everyone scrambles to get gas before the hurst hits. >>

days sunday and monday. monday afternoon and tuesday recollection a cooling trent will kick in as another chance of wet weather rolls in. >> taking a look at the roads, we had very few blocking issues, and we've got one now, but it's not really causing much of a slowdown, it's off on the shoulder. taking a look alt northbound 880 before you get to marina boulevard, one vehicle cut across all lanes and took out another vehicle as it went with it over to shoulder, hit the center divide. one car is facing the wrong way, the other facing the correct way, and they're both fully off to the side. not sure about injuries yet. they have dispatched an ambulance to the scene. things looking better than they were yesterday. here's southbound 680 through walnut creek, a little patchy fog in the area, and a few brake lights, too, just not that solid gridlock we had the last couple days. and drive times so far, we're in the greens and yellow, so not terrible. westbound 580, tracy to dublin, 46 minutes. antioch to concord in the yellow, and san rafael to san francisco, foggy but in the green at 15.

hi, everyone. breaking news from columbus, ohio, where police have someone in custody at a school there after reports of an active shooter. this is the school in columbus, ohio. you can see this is a live image coming in from our colleagues there. ambulances on scene. a huge police presence out there. this morning. so that would be when school started. and let's go ahead and show you also this is coming in from some of our leagues there. this is video of kids being moved out of the way. i believe this is a 6 through 12 school, so that would be middle school or late elementary school, middle school, high school. unclear right now if anyone has been shot or if perhaps anyone injured, but as we have been watching the live images, certainly police not taking it lightly. they have a ton of people out there. no word yet on if that person in custody is perhaps a student or someone who came into the

welcome back. two off-duty sequoia national park rangers happened to be in the right place at the right time. it led to the rescue of an injured hiker. this happened 12,000 feet up in extremely rough terrain there. those rangers just happened to make radio contact with the victim because they were hiking in the same area. the hiker had a severe knee injury and couldn't walk. the rangers called in help from the air and found the man and loaded him into the chopper. he is expected to be okay. chp says a personal locater beacon may have saved that man's life, and they say beacons are not very expensive and it is an item that every hiker needs. >> time to ask finney. cameron has a question about student loans. he spoke to us at our ask finney event in corte madera. >> i'm a student going into college. i was wondering if you could give me any advice on how to control my student loans. >> hi, cameron.

category 4 storm. south florida residents ared advised to take shelter by tonight and stay there. irma is still packing winds of 150 miles per hour as it heads to the bahamas. it's expected to be at least a category 3 hurricane for the next three days. the odds have increased it will hit the southern part of florida on sunday. the national hurricane center has issued a hurricane warning and storm surge warning for miami-dade, broward county and the florida keys. that means hurricane conditions are imminently expected within the warning area. for the latest now, we'll check in with mike. >> all right, matt. i'm looking at the winds right now and the strongest winds when the graphics pull up will be in red. those are starting to rake the southeastern islands of the bahamas. at least 300 miles wide. that's hurricane force winds. it's a 4 right now, winds of 150 miles per hour, moving to the west-northwest at 16. again, not the rain that's going to be an issue right now. it's the wind and storm surge. once it comes ashore about 2:00, sunday morning in the keys and just goes right up the heart of

the peninsula, through tuesday, and then lands, look at that, in atlanta tuesday morning. it's going to cause widespread flooding with up to 15 inches of rain in florida. and possibly three to five inches of rain in atlanta, if you're trying to fly through atlanta tuesday morning, good luck. i have a quick update here from columbus, ohio. after an active shooter there was reported at 6 through 12 school there. i had just reported this a few moments ago. this is a live look out there. police now say they did find a gun. but they also are saying no one was injured. so a really great update there as far as injuries are concerned. these live pictures also have been showing parents getting to the school. as i been watching, i have seen a lot of kids still being evacuated at this moment. that is continuing. no word on whether or not the suspect was a student or someone

else who came on the campus. that is the latest from the live desk. back to you. >> thank you. back to the breaking news we're tracking in the east bay. firefighters had to pull a woman from a burning home in pleasant hill overnight. >> amy hollyfield is live outside the home. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, natasha. firefighters tell me the 69-year-old woman who was living here is on a breathing machine at the hospital. she was trapped inside this burning home for a while. firefighters got the call to come to this fire at 2:15 this morning on silvia drive here in pleasant hill. the 71-year-old man who lived here got out okay. but neighbors say he was frantically yelling for his wife. firefighters say she was likely disoriented from all the smoke and also possibly was somewhat trapped. >> this is considered a hoarder house. there's a lot of debris in the house. we had difficult access getting inside the structure. as well as trying to get her out of the structure.

it's a training exercise for first responder agencies. coalition founders say they believe it's a fascist movement designed to militarize police and wage war against communities of color. the rally kn gins at 4:00 in oakland. >> a man and woman have filed separate lawsuits against b.a.r.t. claiming excessive force by police led to the woman's miscarriage. video captured the scuffle between officers and michael smith and his then-girlfriend at the station last year. officer husband been looking for an armed man who threatened to rob a passenger and thought that smith matched the suspect's description. smith was later equated of charges of battery on a police officer. >> union city police want you to look at a sketch of a man suspected of groping a jogger. it happened about 6:30 monday morning on the walking trail near union city boulevard. the woman says he told her be my friend just before the attack. she managed to dial 911 on her cell phone. the suspect ran off when he heard the voice of a police dispatcher. the woman said she has seen this

man in the area several times before. >> on to developing news, an effort to buy the public access to martins beach has cleared another hurdle. the mercury news reports the state assembly passed a bill that would allow the state lands commission to accept outside donations. the public agency is trying to take a public easement over a private road by eminent domain. it returns to the state senate next week and if approved legislation would go to the governor who would then have until october 15th to sign it. happening tonight, former president bill clinton will be in san francisco. he's the keynote speaker at an event honoring the reverend amos brown and his wife jane brown for their 40 years of sufrbs to the community. a native of jackson, mississippi, he's been a pastor of the third baptist church since 1976. >> there's a snag in the proposed sale of permits for the maverick surf contest. the company holding them filed for bankruptcy in february. it wants to sell the permits to

a surfing contest producer. one of their creditors is objecting to the sale price. it says they're worth $1 million. mavericks can't go on without the permits. a bankruptcy court will consider the sale at a hearing in two weeks. as you know, we're dealing with a lot of wildfires on the west coast. here's evidence of how far it is reaching. noaa released this video, that haze you see running at a diagonal from the northwest to the high plains and the midwest, that is all smoke. we are exporting some really nasty air across the rest of the country. that part of the country could possibly see the northern lights tonight. that's rare it gets that far south. but that smoke may keep them from being able to see it, unfortunately. let's talk about what's going on here at home. to the graphics we go. 52 in woodside right now. temperature of 54 right now in menlo park. we have upper 50s in daly city, pacifica, and half moon bay.

crews are on their way to help in florida as hurricane irma moves in. san jose fire tweeted this out at 1:00 this morning. san jose firefighters part of task force three have been deployed to elgin air force base in florida. >> that is not the only team headed to the east coast. tiffany wilson has more at the moffitt air national guard base in mountain view. good morning, tiffany. >> good morning, natasha and matt. yes, we just got out to the air field. you can see one of the aircraft right behind me that is about to head out to florida. this is an mc-1 30 air craft. three will take off for florida along with two hawk rescue helicopters and highly trained guardian angel pararescuemen. all in all, more than 100 of the 129th rescue wing members are headed to florida. many of them have just gotten back from helping out with hurricane harvey in texas. a captain says that despite the quick turnaround, they are ready to help those in need. >> we are ready to spin up once
