we'll have a live report from miami in just a few minutes. who insist on staying. happening today, there could be a rally in oakland regarding daca, but so far, officials say the organizers have not pulled a permit nor shared a route. at 2:00 this afternoon, a group is planning to rally near the plaza. similar to this one. oakland promises the police department is prepared to address any criminal behavior. the city did not say how they were notified, but did send out an e-mail to make people aware of it. . first responders are in alameda county. this morning, urban shield continues in castro valley. eric thomas got an inside look at the training in pleasonton yesterday. >> want to get to the source of bleeding, pack that in there. >> this was the day for vendors to show off their products. yes, they were guns and night scopes, but they make mannequins

>> critics complain it's about the militarization of police, but u sheriff gregory who hosts the event says hurricane harvey, the three other storms in the atlantic and the earthquake in mexico also the disaster preparedness is no joke. >> it's a matter of when, so our area, our region is trying to get better prepared. >> eric thomas, abc 7 news. a memorial service will be held today for an oakland musician who was killed trying to get back his stolen laptop. on august 9th, he was sitting out with his lap ton when a man came up and grabbed it. witnesses say he ran after the man and grabbed his car. he was run over and dieded at the scene. the memorial service will be held at 11:00 this morning at soul gate studios on merrill street in oakland. the chp says highway 4 in pittsburgh was shut down for nearly an hour likely because of a shooting. the closure took place overnight

near the love ridge road exit. it's unclear in anyone was hurt. the highway reopened the traffic at 12:40 this morning. we are waiting a call back from the chp for further information. also new this morning, san francisco police tweeted this picture of a crash that happened overnight on market street near 16th. you can see the car rolled over on its side in the middle of the road. police say the driver was the only person in the vehicle. that driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. b.a.r.t. police need your help this morning to locate this missing man. 81-year-old john jones was last seen at his home on thursday. family members located car at the station. it's not known if jones hopped on b.a.r.t. after parking. if you see him, you're asked to call police.

southern access to big sur will stay closed another year. the slide was one of the largest in state history. it's cut off much of the coastal community. caltrans hopes to build over the slide and get the highway reopened by late summer of next year. these photos show the enormity of the may 20th slide. more than 5 million cubic yards of rock and dirt slid on to the roadway and into the ocean. time is 6:05. hurricane irma has downgraded to a category 4. that means the storm is weakening, but with winds of 155 piles per hour or more, irma is anything but weak, she's now taking dead aim at south florida where some are determined to ride it out. stephanie ramos is live in miami for us with more on this developing story. dpood morning to you. >> good morning. this morning, we are seeing so many iconic miami places just ghost towns. no traffic, no people. very few people here walking around, but a lot of folks boarding up their homes and

businesses as the deadly storm rages toward the coast. today, hurricane irma is inching closer and closer to south florida with winds of 160 miles an hour, the storm now shifting significantly for the rest. the eye of the storm with its sight on the florida keys and tampa. the national weather service tweeting this is as real as it gets. nowhere in florida keys will be safe. we are running out of time. the storm is almost here. if you are in an evacuation zone, you need to go now. >> more than 5.6 million people have been asked to evacuate. many of them living low lying coastal areas. as time runs out, people are still trying to escape the storm. traffic so bad on the routes out of south florida, some abandoned their cars because they've run out of gas. those trying to get out by air finding themselves stuck. ft. lauderdale's airport closed. miami international suspending all flights. those who try to get in hoping

to get a last minute ticket stranded and bussed to shelters. >> i was trying to find flights and it's just been awful. we haven't slept. >> some miami beach residents are counting on their storm resistant structures and are staying put. >> we have water to ride out, days of electricity and we have you know hurricane proof housing. it's a brand-new built building with cement. >> here in miami, we're starting to feel the outer rain bands, which is expected to reach south florida by tomorrow morning. chris. >> we've heard the warnings from governor scott. you've mentioned the warnings from the national weather service, but what about the people who have decided to stay in south florida? so many are wondering how with are they planning to stay safe. >> we've spoken to some of them. they tell me that they feel as

though they're in newer homes and structures where they can be safe. homes that will protect them from hurricane winds and rain and also higher up off the ground. they feel their homes won't get swallowed up by a storm surge, which is a big threat here in south florida. there are other people who have boarded up their homes, their businesses and if they weren't able to evacuate the area completely, they have gone to a shelter where they can stay safe there. and the counties here and on the west coast, opening up moshelte so people can have that because they're filling up fast. >> we'll see how this plays out. thanks so much for that live report. hurricane irma is always causing all sort of problems for airlines and many have decided to shut down operations to florida for the weekend. jet blue has canceled flights. united airlines has canceled all

of its flights through monday. we have more from sfo. >> this sfo terminal sign has a long list of flights, but everything to and from south florida canceled. this berkeley woman's mother is stranded in turks and caicos after irma pounded those islands. >> she texted me that she's fine, there's a will the of destruction, trees down. >> jess picked up her sister who arrived on a flight from colorado. she's confident her mother will make it back to boston where she lives. >> she is booked on a flight, it only works if the airport is open. >> gonzalez made it out of miami to sfo on one of the last flights. >> i was lucky. >> it's been a mad dash out of florida while some california emergency officials landed there to help. pg&e crews from the bay area will help florida power and light with expected outages from the storm.

investigators are trying to determine what cause d a plane o crash. yesterday, search teams found the plane. crews following a ping that came from the beacon. it was traveling to santa rosa. in is south bay, a health scare may be linked to jails. they are investigating two cases of hepatitis a. health officials are now offering vaccinations to all inmates and staff at the main jail. >> it's an infection of the liver and can spread from person to person.

today. it's going to be hot inland tomorrow with temperatures climbing up into the triple digits and then a chance of showers early next weekend. i'll tell you about that in a little bit. right now, we are dealing with the morning cloud, which is typical for the time of year. you'll notice it will pull back to the coast. plenty of sunshine for everyone except along the coast, where we'll see partly cloudy conditions. san francisco climbing up to 6 degrees and low to mid 80s in parts of the north bay. inland valleys will hit about 90 degrees this afternoon san jose, 83 and morgan hill at 87 degrees. santa cruz will be comfortable at 74. overnight lows tonight will be mild and less cloud cover tomorrow morning. when we sart off the day, so 50s near the coast and even some mid-60s inland. and so, if you're headed to any

outdoor activities, the it's going to be a really pleasant weekend. at the mountain view art and wine festival, temperatures will range to 79 degrees then tomorrow, notice they come up, more sunshine and it will be warmer. 10:00, temperatures will be in the mid-70s then it will hit the upper 80s. by the afternoon. so, highs for tomorrow are going to be quite a bit warmer compared to today. so, a long the beaches, we'll see 70s, san francisco. 77 and around the bay, some 80s for you. oakland at 88, hayward at 88 then triple digits in some of the areas, antioch about 99 degrees. so here is a look at the weekend week ahead. the next seven days in livermore for example will be above our average high today. notice temperatures are warming up. we start to ramp back down and cool off into thursday. so, a little bit of a roller coaster ride in terms of temperatures, but we also have

inland in the low 90s. at the coast, temperatures still in the 60s. lots of sunshine this into this evening. sunset at 7:26 and get ready for an even warmer day tomorrow, chris. >> thank you. developing news out of florida, hurricane irma. and forecasters now say the eyed the tampa area tomorrow. state officials emphasize people in the low lying coastal areas should leave if they haven't done so. traffic jams are so epic, many have left their cars by the side to have road because they've run out of gas. a woman and her husband say they're going to stay put and they believe they have a plan in place for when irma hits. >> if something happens to the roof, we all have to be clear headed and we need to figure out which bathroom to go into, which mattress to over our heads. this has to be thought out ahead

of time. >> those trying air arine finding themselves stk and out of luck. the airport in ft. lauderdale is closed and miami international is suspending all flights. those hoping to get a last minute ticket were stranded and bussed the shelters. travis air bors base is doing its part for the relief efforts. so far, 23 service members from travis have been deployed to the caribbean in the wake of irma. the crew includes two critical care air transpor teams and a ten-bed staging facility team. crews are using the c-17 which is capable of delivering troops and all types of cargo. you can follow the latest through the new us app. we'll send breaking news right to your smart phone. a convoy of trucks will leave for texas this weekend

with supplies for harvey victims and a charity will focus next on gatt eing what's needed for florida and mexico. leslie brinkley has more. >> there are boxes and boxes of medical supplies to sort through here at med share's warehouse. they usually handle things like surgical masks, but what is needed now is different. disaster relief personnel in texas are begging for personal hygiene items for evacuee, things they didn't have time to bring with them, like shampoo, baby diapers and toothbrushes. >> to have harvey follow irma, we're watching jose. there are the 8.0 earthquake last night in mexico city, it's unprecedented and is challenging the organization, but thanks to our supporters and volunteers

and financial backers who are up for the challenge. >> trucks are being loaded this weekend and will roll down to texas. they hope to get more baby supply and personal care donations next week to get a convoy going to florida. and with the mexico earthquake, med share is gearing up to send canes, walkers and wheelchairs. >> we just got the call they're having a special session to come in and help for harvey. so i came in with my neighbor. >> if you have supplies to donate, med share says collect them over the wean and drop them off at the warehouse starting next monday. i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. new details on another natural disaster this morning. the death toll from friday's massive quake in mexico has risen to 61. the 8.1 quake levelled town, buildings and buried people under piles of rubble. however, scientists say that number could have been much worse. had it not been for mexico's early warning system, something the united states doesn't have. seismologists at the usgs and uc berkeley are working to develop one for ka california.

>> we're hopeful in the next year or two, the it's going to be become much more widespread. as the system is tested more thoroughly. >> budget cuts proposed by the president trump administration would have eliminated the system, but in july, a congressional committee voted to continue funding. and more trouble for mexico. tropical storm katia is drenching the east central portion of the country. unfortunately, that area is proun to flooding. but they may have dodged a bullet. it was a category 1 earthquake when it made landfall. it's now bringing wind of 40 miles an hour to the region. a new type of neighborhood security camera could soon be coming to your neighborhood. that's good news since according to fbi data, about 80% of property crimes remain unsolved. vick lee has the story.

>> it's a solar powered license plate reading camera installed in neighborhoods. these images courtesy of the company. camera maker contracts with homeowners associations in other neighborhood groups. their cameras can capture license plates of suspicious cars, tat time a crime is committed. something common home security cameras may miss. >> this goes beyond just your traditional nonviolent crime like home break ins, but it really allows neighborhoods to look at things like speeding or loitering and other types of activities like that. >> the cameras can be installed on tree, lamp posts or even on ground level. if you know when the crime occurred, you can pull down the

the university of california is suing the trump administration over its decision to end daca. u krrc is the first college sys in the country to take the president to court. >> i'm outraged on behalf of these young people. >> university of california president janet napolitano helped create the daca immigration policy when she was secretary of homeland security. now, she's suing to keep that program alive. napolitano announced friday that

she and the uc system filed a federal lawsuit against the trump administration. it challenges the decision to rescind daca. which protects nearly 800,000 dreamers. >> all of a sudden, being told that in six months, you could be subject to being deported from the united states, just imagine the kind of uncertainty that throws you into. >> the system has about 4,000 undocumented students. councils many of them at uc berkeley. >> it's been a week of grief. students are mad, sad, frustrated, but if there was one word to describe our student community, it would be resilient. they still find togetherness and love. >> harvey dylan says the lawsuit brings up all sorts of legal issues. >> sure, these are all individual, they have dreams and rights, but what are those and does the uc system have any rights here?

>> she adds that all president trump wands to do is return to the status quo. >> more than $800,000 in grant money has been awarded at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. the funds were distributed through the hospital's hearts grants program. it helps fund projects that otherwise might go unfunded. this year, that includes the hospital's mobile comfort cares program. it helps to bring comfort to patients in their last days or hours of life. >> this is i think enable us to provide that peshl sized personal touch kind of care for people going through one of the hardest moments of life. >> since 2004, the hearts grants program has funded nearly 500 grants. totalling almost $12 million. time is 6:41 and overall, not too bad to start the day. >> yeah, i think it's going to be b a gorgeous day and we are dealing with the low clouds and fog as we can see from mt. tam.
