terrifying numbers. >> florida governor said today if you're not already on roads, stay where you are. and find shelter. 6.3 million people have been ordered to evacway. those who stayed home could be in the dark and the storm hasn't even hit yet. nearly 200,000 customers have no power already. tonight, more than 72,000 people are 390 shelters across florida. less than four hours ago the first gusts reached the f keys and it's just going get worse for the west coast. >> you know it is strengthening on its final approach to the keys. it's a category four. this is looking just devastating for the southwest coast of florida. and of course all of the florida peninsula. if we look closer now, you can see the eye wall is just about to move into key west. as we look at live doppler 7. you notice we have hurricane warnings in the red over the

entire state. and as we see that, we're looking at tornado watchings. some of the impacts so far the hazards have been with winds up to 44 miles per hour. 79 miles per hour wind gust a storm surge and rain at an inch per hour. we're continuing to see this strengthening before it hits land. and then we'll look at the storm surge which is the most devastating aspect of the hurricane. we're looking at the storm surge up to 15 feet in wave action on top of that. this is a prolonged system that will last all throughout the day on sunday. >> all right. we'll check in again. the monster storm shifted course today and is posing a direct threat against the tampa area. millions of floridaens base for the worst. abc news reporter is the in the path of the storm. >> reporter: the first of irma's

and irma closes in. >> as forecasters say it's likely to make land fall in the keys tomorrow morning. with the worst expected here late tomorrow night. >> life in tampa florida. >> before you get away shift in the hurricane trek. did that catch people off guard on the florida west coast? >> it really did. for a lot of people who live here. they really thought it was going to be an east coast, central florida, south florida storm. they really let their guard down. had to come up with a plan last second of how to get out. and there were people who lived in the evacuation zones on the east coast and south florida. like miami, west palm beach. who came to tampa to evacuate. they had to scramble to find other hotels. because gas running out and gas stations have now closed, some of the evacuees are having to ride out the storm here.

it's scary. because of the size of the hurricane. it's massive. >> major florida airports shut down as hurricane irma closed in on the state. 24 flights connected to and from sfo were can saled. it serves miami. orlando, tampa and fort lauder dale. advised any stranded travelers to work with their airline and book when it's safe. >> certainly devastating to see all the math that the hurricane has caused. as it passenger i would advise them to please stay in touch with loved ones and contact all the airlines to confirm plans. >> reporter: he flew from houston. he was there during harvey. and saw neighborhoods under water. >> things were bad. areas were flooded. looking at irma, it looks terribly. i feel sorry for florida. >> reporter: had volunteer was supposed to fly to florida with help with relief efforts.
