we've seen it weaken over the storm with the wind field expanding as it continues to weaken and move up the coast. here's a look at it. you can see the yellows there. we're still worried about the possibility of tornadoes, flooding rain and storm surge. as it moves up the coast, it weakens to a category 1 by 2:00 tomorrow morning with winds of 85 miles an hour. look at the rain, southern george into south carolina and tennessee. we're looking at this continue to wreak havoc with flooding, and winds at 50 miles an hour and west palm still at 60 to 70 miles an hour for the next several hours. back home it's about the heat. there's thunderstorms offshore that are pretty strong. we'll get a piece of that action and talk about that. a video from naples shows the force of the storm in florida keys with the sheriff

saying anyone on the streets could be arrested. abc news reporter marcy gonzales joining us. you can see winds are very powerful. >> reporter: you can see we are getting hit hard by these wind gusts, the pounding rain. this is just the start of what will be a long and dangerous night. hurricane irma pummeling the sunshine state. leaving downtown miami under more than waist-deep water, white caps on city streets. >> look at this. we have flying debris all over the place. can you see that? >> reporter: those powerful winds snapping a krarngs tearing off this roof and knocking this man off his feet. >> tornado. >> reporter: tornadoes adding to the ongoing danger. >> there's no warning, there's no -- this is no way to predict. >> reporter: the giant storm already blamed for several deaths in florida, including a sheriff's deputy and a correctional officer. >> yeah, this storm has really

picked up. >> reporter: after making landfall this morning in the keys as a category 4 with 130-mile-per-hour winds, a second landfall on marco island as a category 3 -- >> whoa! >> reporter: -- the governor again warning people to stay indoors with the danger still far from over. >> do not think this storm is over when the wind slows down. the storm surge will rush in and could kill you. >> reporter: the storm surge especially a concern along the gulf coast. in naples it could be as high as 15 feet. irma sucking water out of tampa bay before it's sent rushing back in. >> mike tyson once said, everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face. and we're about to get punched in the face. >> reporter: preparing for that punch, more than 500 shelters are open statewide, some at capacity. >> this was our third shelter. >> reporter: this one in the dark. more than 2.5 million homes and

businesses here in florida are already without power. that number is expected to double as the storm keeps moving up the coast. we aren't expecting the worst in this area until overnight. live in tampa, florida, marci gonzalez, abc news, back to you. first responders from the bay area are in florida tonight, ready to help with rescues and relief from hurricane irma. right now more than 3 million customers don't have power. the monster storm is even impacting our very own colleagues. cornel bernard is live in san francisco and someone you know, cornell, is down there in harm's way. >> reporter: yeah, really concerned about my former coworker, john, who chose to stay in his florida home for the hurricane. and now regrets that he did. meantime, members of the air national guard from the bay area are in florida to help. >> the street is completely flooded, the water is beginning to encroach on my house. >> reporter: that's my former colleague, john, riding out hurricane irma from his house in

ft. myers, florida. now in the direct path of the storm. >> i am in my bedroom, but i do have an interior bathroom i have set up as a safe place with a mattress to pull over myself in case it really gets bad. >> reporter: john's power has been out for hours, but he does have a generator. he lives just outsides the mandatory evacuation zone and chose to stay put, but many of his neighbors got out days ago. >> i'm going to be honest, cornell, had i had it do do all over again, i would have left town on wednesday. >> we're looking at sleeping arrangements that were housed in the gymnasium. >> reporter: tech sergeant shows us accommodations for some members at the california air national guard at moffett field, now staging in northern florida. these pictures show a risky air mission on saturday when equipment and personnel were dropped in the hurricane zone near miami. >> dropped them off in the middle of the storm as the storm was approaching. so, we had tornadoes and lightning and all that stuff as we were landsing. >> reporter: those guard members now in the perfect spot to help

with ground or water rescues. >> well, here just to support people of florida. >> reporter: at a time when many will need it. as for john, his home is ten miles from the gulf coast but his business is only blocks away. >> if i have a business come tuesday, i'll be really happy. >> reporter: he's hoping for the best. cornell bernard, abc7 news. tonight at 7:00 there will be a special edition of "20/20," george stephanopoulos takes a look at hurricane irma. an east palo alto police officer is in stable condition after an attempting carjacking off duty. investigators are looking for the suspect. they believe there is surveillance video from a target store but they have not yet released that video. stay with abc7 news for any breaking news updates. san francisco firefighters are remembering one of their own who died on the job early this morning. other firefighters found

battalion chief terry smerdel unresponsive inside his office. he had just returned to his fire house in chinatown from a call. flags are flying at half-staff in all of san francisco's 44 other fire houses in honor of smerdel. tonight police are looking for the shooter who killed a popular deejay and member of san francisco's lbgtq district, anthony torres died in the tenderloin district. >> reporter: everyone wants to know what led up to the shooting, wondering if torres was the victim of a hate crime. >> the best thing in the neighborhood. >> reporter: the community is shocked off the shooting death of anthony torres, also known as bubbles. he was well known in the transgender community and beyond as activist, artist and deejay. he would often play music in the tenderloin. >> he would come out with turn

tables and sound system. he always wore wild drag. never talked to him but i loved him. he was great. just brought a lot of energy to the neighborhood. this is an exciting block, so he brought the excitement. but this is terrible. >> reporter: san francisco police say torres was shot at 2:50 a.m. saturday. they haven't identified a suspect but members of the community say the shooter emerged in the new century strip club. walked across the street where torres was making music and open fire. they say at this point it doesn't appear to be a hate crime but those who knew and loved him are encouraging investigators to leave no stone unturned. >> people are upset that bubbles, someone who was loved for his activism, his art and for how forgiving he was would be gunned down in these streets in the tenderloin, which is supposed to be a neighborhood that's accepting and supportive of transgender individuals. >> reporter: a vigil will be held at the scene of the shooting tonight at 7:00. live in san francisco, abc7

hurricane irma has forced gas prices to spike because of refinery closures in texas. the average price of regular gasoline was up 30 cents, 48 cents higher than a. the most expensive gas in the nation is in the city of san francisco. $3.21 a gallon. the cheap in baton rouge, $2.21 a gallon. a plea from wildlife experts to stop using newly designed rat traps outdoors after a skunk had to be rescued from two traps. crews had to save this little guy's life. old traps have rounded edges that allow animals to slip away but these new ones use serrated blades that clamp down. wildlife services has called for better labeling so people know to keep them indoors. this time, thanks to rescuers,

the latest on hurricane irma pounding southwest florida with heavy rainfall and powerful winds. it's been downgraded to a category 2 storm with sustained winds of up to 110 miles an hour. it's moving across naples and hitting ft. myers. so far, irma has left at least three people dead in florida and at least 27 in the caribbean. 6.5 million floridans have been ordered to evacuate. more than 530 shelters are open throughout the state. 3 million homes and businesses don't have electricity at this hour, with the majority being in the keys and miami-dade county. the east bay's lbgtq community beamed with pride in downtown oakland. ♪ abc7 news took in the sights and sounds of oakland's pride

parade along broadway. this year's pride parade had a little more to celebrate. oakland's lbgtq community center just held its grand opening. the el cerito police department held back to school water play to help them beat the heat. they competed in a water obstacle course and a dunk tank. 103 in vallejo today, you needed something, that's for sure. temperatures were really, really warm. several locations had temperatures above 100 degrees. as we look at this pretty shot of the sun, it sets at 7:27. current numbers are still awfully warm out there. we're looking at 94 in sab san jose. 78 in san francisco. 99 in gilroy. boy, the numbers in inland east bay still very, very warm. how about 97 in livermore,

fairfield. temperatures after this day today will be coming down. santa rosa is at 96. high today of 100. you want to hear about the good news, right? we have low clouds and fog on our live doppler 7 setup. we're looking at more in the way of midlevel clouds due to a system offshore. this is producing some very strong storms around southern california, santa barbara county. all this is rotating offshore in a counterclockwise fashion. we'll get a little cloud cover from it. we will see the system move to the north. i'll tell you how it will influence our weather. today, 12 to 15 degrees warmer. in fact, right now 17 degrees warmer than it was yesterday at this time. pretty shot for you here. warm evening. the clouds will increase late. so, sleeping weather is going to be a little bit compromised as we get towards the cooler weather towards the morning hours. partly cloudy tomorrow with a chance of showers late and the chance of showers continues into

tuesday and wednesday. here's our hour by hour animation. we have some clouds but overall the low clouds and fog will cool us back tomorrow by as much as 10 degrees. it sets up offshore by 2:00 in the afternoon. then this same old low that's bringing a strong storm to southern california is moving and will bring us a passing shower perhaps tomorrow. also into tuesday and wednesday. but we'll stop this right here at 11:00 monday night and show you what you can expect on tuesday. which is still warm inland. numbers continue to come down about 10 degrees each day. we go into wednesday, highs a little below average. even into thursday. it will feel better come middle of the week. it will even feel better tomorrow. we do have some of this moisture in the atmosphere. picking this up midnight on tuesday, you will notice perhaps tuesday morning you could run into wet pavement. then into wednesday morning is the end of it. by wednesday afternoon, things will be getting back to normal.
