roads as well. in los gatos the winds were howling. we were on lark and 17 and a lot of debris. i saw a pg&e crew out there. and a major issue as you're driving, major intersections in san jose, campbell, los gatos will be without power. you will see no lights there. a lot of times you come across it because the lights are out in the whole neighborhood that you will run right through the lights. treat them as four-way stops and if you see traffic coming the other direction be careful. they may blow right through the stoplight so you want to be extra careful when you're driving in the south bay. we'll be traveling around finding areas with trees and branches down. just be aware you may be the first person to come across this type of debris.

matt keller, abc 7 news. now to developing news in florida hurricane irma has been downgraded. >> a look from ft. myers, florida. rescue crews right now going door-to-door in the florida keys looking for people who need help. the storm is blamed for at least four deaths in florida including a sheriff's deputy. that's in addition to the 27 deaths reported in the caribbean. officials have ordered a staggering 6.5 million people to evacuate. 4.5 million homes and businesses are without power right now and that is more than a third of all power customers in that state. we are going to have a live report from miami in just a few minutes. and members of a san francisco bay area urban search and rescue team are in florida responding to hurricane irma. 30 members of task force three prepared to bed down at elgin air force base. an additional 51 members were scheduled to arrive early this morning. the task force left early

saturday morning loaded with 18 vehicles carrying 60,000 pounds of search and rescue equipment. >> and at the live desk i want to show you new video coming in from florida showing the danger a lot of folks are facing this morning. security cameras catching transformers blowing up in a tampa neighborhood yesterday. you can see some big flashes there of light during the explosi explosion. 200 miles away in riviera beach it appears a power line fell on top of a car setting it on fire. heavy smoke and flames from the wreckage. irma has caused massive power outages all across florida. nearly 6 million customers are without power, and that number, we can see go up throughout the day. back to you. >> jessica, thank you. mike nicco is tracking irma. >> a quick update on our local weather. hey there, mike. we'll take a look at what's going on. a very big eye becoming diffused just north of tampa.

the live doppler radar out of tallahassee, jacksonville and tampa rolling right there. put it in motion it is still pushing up to the north and still over water enough that it's going to stay fairly strong for the next several hours. it's a category 1, moving north/northwest at 18 miles an hour. let's see where it ends up going just over albany and then columbus, georgia, and starts to head over to birmingham as it drops down to a tropical storm. rainfall will be the biggest issue moving forward and the winds will become less of an issue as we'll get about 5 to 8 inches of rain across alabama and georgia. alexis? okay, taking a look at the roads, pretty quiet at the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights yet. looks like a little lineup in the cash lanes on the right-hand side. the left side looks pretty good at the moment. and a quick check of drive times starting to ramp up out of the central valley. tracy to castro valley not terrible but you are in the yellow at 43 minutes. northbound 101 highway 85 to the

san jose airport. you heard matt warning you. mike talked about the breeze this morning as well. and we could have some dark stoplights, but so far you're still in the green at 12 minutes. northbound 280 great at just ten minutes. a new issue in sunol we'll check on next. and president trump will mark the anniversary of the september 11 attacks. you are looking at the memorial in new york city which will be the center of today's commemoration. the names of almost 3,000 people who were killed. al qaeda militants flew two hijacked planes into the twin towers of the old world trade center. a fourth plane crashed into a field in pennsylvania after passengers overpowered their hijackers. the president and first lady will observe a moment of silence at the white house and attend a ceremony at the pentagon. vice president pence will be in shanksville, pennsylvania. abc news will carry each commemoration in special reports

president trump's border wall and immigration and trade proposals. officials say the trip is intended to send a message that the country should work together. california's home to about 4 million people born in mexico. happening today a man accused of killing three teens and a drunk driving crash on memorial day is expected to be arraigned in oakland. you may remember this video, security camera caught a pickup truck with seven people in it rolling over and over after hitting a minivan in almeida. three passengers in the truck were killed including two 17-year-old girls. they say the 19-year-old was behind the wheel, charged with three felony counts of vehicular manslaughter. new video shows what it took to rescue a boater stranded in the estuary saturday evening after the coast guard received a report the boat had run aground. a helicopter crew lowered a swimmer who helped put the 61-year-old man in a rescue basket. he did not suffer any injuries. here is what his 32-foot boat looked like after running aground. you can see it listing there.

the boater says that he missed a buoy. i wanted to show you those thunderstorms that are collapsing down to our south and pushing the breezy conditions though the south bay. up the coast and up the peninsula. what happens when the thunderstorm crashes, that cold air from the top of the thunderstorm sinks down and hits the ground and then fans out and accelerates and that's what we're seeing happen down to our south. there's more thunderstorms down near santa barbara. a lot of these are rotating out over the ocean but come late this afternoon overnight and tomorrow some more redeveloping will come our way and i'll show you that in the next weather. all right, heading out right now you can see what the breezes are doing. 75 in the santa teresa neighborhood. mountain view at 74. los altos hills at 76. that's probably not the right temperature because everybody around it is mainly in the low to mid-70s until you get to the north bay. we're in the mid to upper 60s. if you're on the roads today

breezy spots especially this morning. the same thing on the bay. and mild to warm if you're going to take mass transit. speaking of the commute, let's turn it back over to alexis. what are you watching? >> we have a couple issues on the roads this morning. i want to zoom in to the sunol area on the counter commute side so northbound 680 just before you get to state route 84 a disabled big rig is blocking the two right lanes. i don't think we're going to see a big backup this hour. i will keep my eye on that. maybe if my clicker wants to cooperate, northbound 17 just past the statues, reports of a solo vehicle collision, someone lost control. they hit the side barrier there and they're blocking the slow lane right now. emergency crews are on the way. we'll look at drive times in just a few minutes. and throughout the morning new video from florida. we continue to get those images coming in including this amid all the chaos folks stealing

already been done. >> stephanie ramos has been covering irma last week. she's live in miami with what is happening. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. such a different morning here in miami compared to what we saw yesterday. we have people stepping out to their -- we're at a hotel where we were protected from the storm. you have people walking out to their balconies so overjoyed they are okay, that this storm has moved on. it's still a dangerous situation for those on the west coast and central florida, of course, but here in miami we saw the powerful winds and rain here for hours. streets flooded, trees down, and some major power outages across south florida. about 4 million. that's the number right now. about 4 million customers out of power right now across the state. miami escaping irma's center but still hammered by wind gusts approaching 100 miles per hour.

the storm even producing some tornadoes. the wind so strong at least three construction cranes crashed into two buildings, two here in miami, one in ft. lauderdale. a storm surge taking over roads now looking more like rivers. so there's a big cleanup effort under way. we're seeing that here in south florida. the cleanup crews arriving here and picking up the trees and the branches that were blown away by that strong wind. and also other debris that's lying around. street signs that came down, lampposts as well. this morning while we've been here we heard a lot of drivers driving over the debris. so cleanup crews trying to do their best to clean up this area here but we are hearing from the national weather service that this isn't over. extreme storm conditions will continue today for the west and in central florida. reggie, natasha? >> stephanie, before you go, i

wonder if there's a plan now to get everybody who has been in shelters, perhaps who maybe went to other cities or even other states to come back in an orderly fashion so not everyone is trying to jam the roads at once. >> reporter: it seems as though there is. we've heard from miami-dade county police. they say they're going to try and get people out slowly but surely back to their homes especially because you don't know -- they don't know what they're going back to. they don't know how severe the damage is. so that's what a lot of counties here are doing this morning surveying the area, surveying the damage so that they can get back home and there are also those in shelters trying to get flights out of here out of miami who are anxious to get back to the airport and fly back home. miami international airport is actually closed today but will be open, they say, for tomorrow with some limited flights out of here. >> stephanie ramos live for us in miami, thank you so much. we appreciate the update.

we heard reggie and natasha ask stephanie about the roads and what people are trying to deal with to get back. i can tell you florida police are dealing with another problem also associated with irma and that is burglary and looting. look at this video we have. dozens of people arrested. 23 in miami. at least nine people in the ft. lauderdale area in broward county. these are people who were caught and arrested. i want to show you that, ft. lauderdale as well fore video this weekend of folks carrying out boxes and trying to get inside of those stores. authorities across florida have now issued warnings saying that looters will not be tolerated. they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and hopefully that comes down soon, reggie. >> jessica, thank you. firefighters remembering one of their own who died on the job. other firefighters found terry

smerdel unresponsive in his office. he had just returned from a call. flags are flying half-staff at all of san francisco's 44 other firehouses in his honor. police hope you can identify two people involved in an altercation at an in and out. take a look at surveillance photos september 1st. police say the man threatened a victim with a box cutter. the woman is his companion. if you know or recognize these two people call daly city police. that record heat over labor day weekend has left wine grapes shriveling on the vines. three straight days of temperatures dehydrated the grapes. what was a promising vintage now looks more uncertain. they say they will have a less expensive wine blend. >> i feel for our winemakers

because they are so subject and fall victim to these weather patterns we have. >> and wine drinkers, i may add. yes, oh, my goodness. i guess we'll be drinking ceaper wine. maybe not as good. yes, they are so susceptible to the crazy weather and we're about to go through another weird stretch of weather. here we go from the east bay hills. you can see if you're just joining us thunderstorms collapsing to our south. the rush of cool air out of those is pushing gusts up to 35 to 40 miles per hour locally and it's moving from south to north so don't be surprised if it's not gusting in your neighborhood yet. it will get there in the north bay. sun and clouds, warm and humid. storms possible. warm and humid? yes, for the bay area. storms are possible today and tomorrow. midweek we'll dip into almost fall like temperatures before a warmer weekend is on the way. here is a quick look at our highs today. mid to upper 90s in the east bay inland. mid to upper 80s in the south

bay and north bay. low to mid-80s around the bay. 69 at the coast to about 79 in san francisco. so not quite as hot as yesterday. here we go and we'll put this into motion. you can see a few thunderstorms down to our south at noon. notice how they try to work up towards us at the beginning of the evening. the commute at 4:00. by the end we'll have scattered thunderstorms around and they'll keep moving to the north and hanging around during the overnight hours through tomorrow morning and then we should get a break before they possibly redevelop again tomorrow afternoon. take a little steam out of the forecast and let me go back and show you what will go on with these high temperatures in the seven-day forecast. sorry about that. just skipped through right there. a few gremlins this morning. all right, there we go. you can see we get down to about 80 thursday and then warm back to warm levels by the weekend. al right, so we talked about those locally gusty conditions. you're here to tell us -- this is alexis, by the way. you know that. we're only about 20 minutes into going on down there? what's >> we've got some high wind advisories in the south bay and

then we also have some defective traffic signals because we have power outages. you want to be on the lookout for the dark intersections. one of those is highway 17 right at lark avenue. so they're saying all the on and off ramps are totally dark this morning. obviously we don't have any big backups this early hour but pg&e is aware of the power outage in the area and likely will be until about 6:45, maybe even 7:30 before they can get that restored this morning. drive time is looking great. about 13 across san mateo. >> thanks, alexis. happening today the united nations will consider new sanctions against north korea over its latest nuclear test. the united states wants to ban all oil and natural gas exports to the country and freeze financial assets of the government and leader kim jong-un. north korea says it will make the u.s. pay a hefty price if the sanctions go through. north korea conducted its sixth underground nuclear test a week ago sunday. hurricane harvey causing gas prices to spike because of refinery closures in texas.

a facebook post may have saved the lives of two manatees found stuck in the muddy sea floor of sarasota bay yesterday. hurricane irma was 100 miles away but it had pulled the water from the shoreline into the storm's center. a group of friends spotted the stranded manatees and called for help on social media. thousands of people shared the post and eventually florida fish and wildlife conservation saw it and managed to help rescue those animals. happening today the university of california launching a major effort to cure cancer. the disease expected to overtake heart disease as california's leading cause of death. this year alone it will kill about 60,000 people. the plan being announced by president janet napolitano will focus on better uning derstandif cancer and finding new treatments. pride was on display in oakland over the weekend. ♪ very nice.

abc 7 news was on broadway as people enjoyed the sounds of the marching band and a deejay during the pride parade. local leaders including mayor schaaf. this year's pride celebration also included the grand opening of oakland's lgbtq community center near lake merritt. looks like pretty nice weather out there. hi, everybody. let's talk about tonight. it's not going to be quite as warm as this morning but warmer than normal for us and humid once again, low to upper 60s and notice the chance of some showers and even thunderstorms during the overnight hours. if you're going to the game this evening, there's an isolated chance of a shower. the thing you're going to notice at 7:15 at at&t park it's going to be 74 degrees and not too breezy. by 10:15, 67. alexis? all right. taking a look at the roads this morning unfortunately we have a new crash in a bad spot westbound 580 just before you get to north flynn road. this is involving a motorcycle. it does sound like that motorcycle rider is standing on
