as i have the winds overlayed on live doppler 7. the storms are away from us now but check it out as i show you the 12-hour day planner. a chance later on during the afternoon and evening hours some of those storms returning to us. what you'll notice today we're waking up at 63 to 71 degrees. much warmer. 70s, 80s and 90s, still going to be warm but humid this afternoon. i'll talk more about those chances of thunderstorms coming up. here's alexis. good morning, mike. we still have our traffic alert if you're trying to leave the tracy area since about 4:45 this morning we've had this crash on westbound 580 just before you get to north flynn road. a terrible spot to have anything blocking so the left lane is still down 4 miles an hour, 7 miles an hour. right now we're looking at getting close to two hours, tracy to dublin on 580. to the south a little bit use patterson pass road that will save you likely at least half an hour and we're start to go improve northbound 680. all lanes cleared about 15 minutes ago, that was an earlier

sig alert. now breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. and that breaking news what mike and reggie just mentioned strong winds in the south bay this morning taking a lot of people by surprise, those winds coming in overnight knocking down trees in several cities and thousands of customers are without power in the south bay right now. let's check in with abc 7 news reporter matt keller for the latest. hi, matt. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. you said this took people by surprise, even firefighters. an engine on the scene of a report of a downed power lane and they said they were even surprised by what took place early this morning here across the south bay. the good news the winds have died down but the debris is still here. check this out, this giant branch and then you have pine needles all across lark avenue here right off highway 17 just spread out all across the road, so be careful when you're driving this morning. of course the debris can be a lot bigger. check out this video that we

have from the saratog area from earlier this morning. this is near peach hill road. the tree went down during the wind storm landing on a power line. obviously a very dangerous situation. firefighters are keeping watch there until pg&e crews get there and take care of the situation. in campbell they got creative getting rid of a downed tree. they use add tow truck to get that tree off the road. so many calls like this this morning. santa clara fire getting close to two dozen calls in about an hour. and pg&e is on the scene in lark avenue and highway 17's exit ramp. there is power out in this area. they're working to get that restored. i just checked the pg&e outage map. about 4,400 people here are without power down from the peak of about 11,000. reporting live in los gatos, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> we appreciate the update, thank you. developing news out of florida, right now hurricane irma is

slamming tallahassee. jacksonville is under a flash flood emergency. the hurricane first made landfall as the category 4 storm on sunday morning. you're looking at the wind gusts up to 142 miles per hour in naples yesterday. at least five people in florida are dead and 27 in the caribbean. right now nearly 6 million customers in florida are without power and that is more than half of the state. >> president trump received briefings on the storm over the weekend. he says he's confident in the federal response. this morning the coast guard is preparing aircraft for search and rescue operations, cargo planes will arrive in the florida keys today and they're going to assess the damage there. right now more than 500 shelters in florida house more than 116,000 storm victims. the president says he plans to visit florida in the coming days. we'll let you know when we get more concrete plans. take a look at this video out of key largo, florida, and what's concerning here is what isn't there. see how irma just sucked up all

now a traffic alert. >> from abc 7 mornings. we have not had a great start here on this monday morning. i want to take you back out to altamont pass where we have the left lane blocked. we've had a crash here since 5:45 -- make that 4:45. we're going on an hour and a half and we have just a mess of delays. ten-mile backup onto 205. if you want to use patterson pass road, that might save you 15, 20 minutes. it's starting to fill in as well. ace rail probably your best bet today. also a little bit of good news 880 before whipple avenue, an earlier crash in the hov lane has cleared. however, you're jammed solid from about state route 238. doesn't look great here for the san mateo bridge. westbound got the all clear on

the earlier fire. so hopefully this will start to unwind soon. right now looking at about a 20-minute delay. let's check in with mike nicco. good morning. good morning, alexis. hi, everybody. live dopplernd thunderstorms down to our south and rotating an hour away thanks to this area of low pressure that's going to keep us warm and humid again today. this will move north bringing us a chance of thunderstorms the next 48 hours. temperatures, look at this, upper 60s to low 70s on the peninsula, even menlo park at 73. half moon bay at 63. most of us in the low to mid-70s. a quick look at your activity planner, good on the bay, beached mild high and sticky if you're going to be outside. a look at the chances of showers up next. happening today san francisco supervisors will discussion renaming justin herman plaza. justin herman ran the agency in san francisco and led efforts to demolish thousands of african-american-owned homes and businesses in the district.

hi and back. breaking news alerts we are getting out of switzerland. a train crash has left at least 27 people hurt in the city of andermatt at the train station itself. the city located in the swiss alps right near lucerne southeast of bern. very little information. i wanted to jump in and make sure you knew about this international headline. no word if there are fatalities. i will keep my eye on anything. 6:15 now. on to developing news in berkeley, the city council discussing police accountability reform at tomorrow's meeting. "the daily californian" says councilmembers will review strengthening the commission to improve use of force reporting policies and give full access to the city's records. citizens would need to vote on the issue next year. the center for policing equity

advised to make improvements after black lives matter protests in 2014. berkeley police were accused of using excessive force, rubber bullets and batons to control protesters. deputies accused of abusing inmates are expected back in court. the district attorney says erik mcdermott, stephen sarcos, justin linn and sarah krause. the deputies arraigned in dublin. they say they mistreated inmates in jail. several deputies are accused of letting an inmate throw feces and urine at other inmates. mcdermott is suspected of choking an inmate. they say he and linn threatened a witness. all four deputies are free on bail. developing news out of san francisco where a plan to improve the tenderloin street lights is on hold again. according to "the chronicle" it stems from a dispute. the commission accuses pg&e of

quadrupling the connection fees saying the utility wans to charge $107,000 for the work. pg&e says the fees were reached after reviewing the agreement and it will not resume until the commission signs the agreement. one of the most powerful hurricanes to cross the atlantic has weakened now to a tropical storm. >> it has left at least five people dead in florida and at least 27 dead in the caribbean. the storm has now passed through naples and continues north after pummeling south florida. that's where we find abc news reporter stephanie ramos live for us in miami with the latest. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: natasha, good morning. that's right. hurricane irma is moving up -- headed north. it hit miami with some powerful winds and rain for hours. some streets are flooded. trees are down and this morning there are still millions of there are still millions of customers without power.

hurricane irma's eye didn't hit miami directly, but we definitely felt the intense and strong winds that came through here, slowly weakening as it went up florida's gulf coast, but we saw some intense, dramatic flooding in downtown miami in the financial district, roads turned into rivers, just really dramatic pictures coming out of there and also the winds were so intense, they were so strong that even a couple of cranes crashed into buildings. two here in miami, one in ft. lauderdale, but this morning a much different picture here in south florida. this is basically what miami looks like, a sunny day. a sunny start to the day. we are seeing people walking around taking pictures, taking a look at the damage. and we're also seeing cleanup crews and utility crews out across south florida. right here where we are there are so many trees and tree branches scattered across the ground. if you can see behind me there

are some trees that are still standing but they are bare. a few days ago when we got here full of leaves. so we saw some really strong, powerful winds make its way through here and that rain just kept hitting us sideways, today a much different picture. this is where the cleanup really begins. >> i'm sure, stephanie, it's a little bit deceiving right now. there aren't that many people back to know how damaged their units and homes may have been. what else are you seeing there this morning? >> reporter: exactly. and right now it's still early. it's still early in the morning. we know that thousands of crews, cleanup crews, utility crews are still out and about surveying the damage. from folks that evacuated and left here, left south florida and left the area, went up north, they want to come back home to miami without knowing if they may not have power where they live and we do know that millions of customers are without power right now, at least 4 million customers, but

for now here in south florida again cleanup begins. we've got a lot of scattered street signs but there is traffic now which is completely different compared to what we saw yesterday. a different scene here in miami for sure. >> it's reassuring. we appreciate your coverage. >> the idea of half of a state being evacuated and the crush of people that will have to come back, it boggles the mind. >> and half a state without power. >> 4.6 million? >> at least. >> i saw that like an hour ago so it may have changed by now. live doppler 7. raking the northern half of the state, the panhandle heading into georgia and south carolina where we're going to have massive flooding especially around savannah, possibly to some of the barrier islands of georgia. you think of georgia, they have barrier islands but they actually do and they're going to get swamped along with it eventually, places in alabama so here we go, she continues to

unwind, irma. we talked about this, like an ice skater throwing your hands out to slow down. that's what she's doing. she's down to 70-mile-per-hour winds. with that fetch of water and moisture coming off the ocean you can see the rain heading up into the carolinas wrapping into the tennessee river valley and all the way back to the lower mississippi river valley as we head through the next 48 hours or so as she gets downgraded to a tropical depression and then heads over to memphis by about tuesday evening right in time for their rush hour. back at home our rush hour. i want to look at the clouds more. we'll leave this to alexis this is from southeast looking at the bay bridge. it will be warm. those clouds signify humidity and a chance of showers with lightning and thunder that will continue into tomorrow. coolest wednesday and then our temperatures will rebound as we head into the week. let me show them to you right now. scattered showers tomorrow to isolated thunderstorms wednesday. we have a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow also.

60s and 70s and 70s, 80s and 90s from the coast, the bay to inland by saturday and sunday. alexis? >> i know i sound like a broken record today but we have not had any improvement out of the central valley so westbound 580 this is due to a crash at 4:45 this morning involving a motorcycle, and we just have some brutal delays out of tracy. look at that, 2 miles an hour on 205. 7 miles an hour on 580. if you can delay your trip this morning, if you can use ace rail instead, definitely recommend that. all of our surface streets are jammed. bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights on at about 5:27 this morning. so a pretty sun rise but our typical delay there is through the maze and then a quick check of drive times. not terrible at 27 minutes. about 16 across the bay bridge. and southbound 101, san francisco to the airport, you're in the green ten minutes. >> alexis, thank you. if you were on a do not call list and you are still getting

♪ the best things in life they're free ♪ ♪ devastation in florida. we are getting a look at the aftermath in the southern half of the state as irma moves through the north of florida now. >> and of course nothing compared to irma but strong winds here in the bay area taking out trees and power in the south bay. we have an update at the live desk this half hour. also remembering september 11th, the commemorations happening right now to honor the americans involved during one of the darkest days in u.s. history. it's hard to believe. 16 years ago is when many of our lives changed forever. good morning. it is 6:30. a lot to get to. we're going to start with mike nicco and a bit of a surprise for a lot of you in the south bay. yeah, and thankfully it's over for them but those winds have moved to the north and they're gusting to 32 through

napa and 33 in fairfield. hopefully we do not see a repeat as the south bay as far as damage goes. some of the clouds are going to get thicker later on this evening and bring us a chance of showers and thunderstorms. today not as hot as yesterday but still warmer than average. 63 to 71 this morning. 70s and 80s at noon. 70s, 80s and 90s at 4:00 with a little bit of humidity thrown in. and you can see the lightning bolts there at 7:00. we'll talk more about that coming up. first some traffic knowledge from alexis. no change here getting out of tracy. we are getting close to two hours now for this collision right along the altamont pass. 580 before north flynn, the far left lane is blocked. we have a major backup up to about 11 miles now on to 205 in tracy. chp is saying the tow truck is having trouble getting one of those vehicles that was involved in that crash hooked up and that is really what's taken so long at this point. also starting to improve here, san mateo bridge, about a 20-minute delay all due to an

earlier vehicle fire but all lanes reopened there about 20, 25 minutes ago. now breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. we want to get back to that breaking news we've been tracking all morning long. there was a wild night in the south bay. mike just talked about this. gusting winds knocking down trees and power lines in several different cities. and abc 7 news reporter matt keller has been out there all morning. matt, how does it look now? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. the winds have died down significantly over the last hour and a half or so here in the south bay. the good news i just checked the pg&e outage map and it shows that the number of outages here in the south bay have dropped significantly since the last time i saw you about a half hour ago. it's now about 2,600 customers without power here in the south bay. that's well below the height of the outages at about 11,000 earlier this morning. of course those outages can cause some dangerous situations. this is video from winchester in san jose. power was out at the stoplight making it very dangerous.

it was tough to see that there was even anything there. so take it slow and treat them as four-way stops. trees down in the power lines. this is the saratoga area near peach hill road. santa clara fire getting more than 20 calls within an hour. san jose fire also getting several calls and although the winds have died down, you still have all that debris left behind. check this out. look at these pine needles that are piled up here on lark avenue. big piles in the middle of the row. you've also got tree branches here as well. so be careful when you're out there driving because you may be running into some debris on the roads. when i was driving this morning it was flying all over across the road, so hopefully they'll get some of that cleaned up and you can see some of the bigger trees that have fallen are being taken care of by fire departments or pg&e crews as well. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you so much. hurricane irma now has been down graded to a tropical storm

and is swinging into georgia carrying winds up to 70 miles per hour. >> here is the latest on irma's impact. rescue crews going door-to-door in the florida keys looking for people who need help. the storm is blamed for at least five deaths in florida including a sheriff's deputy in addition to the 27 deaths reported in the caribbean. nearly 200,000 people are waiting the storm out in evacuation shelters. nearly 6 million people without power. that is more than half of customers in the state. >> downed power lines are causing problems in areas ravaged by hurricane. one downed power line sparked this massive fire last night. now it took place at an intersection where there are at least two major car dealerships, so you can guess what happened next. 26 vehicles reportedly burned. members of a bay area urban search and rescue team are in florida to respond to the needs of residents facing hurricane irma. 30 members of task force three prepared to bed down in elgin air force base after arriving at 9:00 last night. an additional 51 member are

million people born in mexico. law enforcement searching for suspects, possibly two women, accused of shooting an off-duty east palo alto police officer. this happened in lathrop around 2:00 yesterday afternoon. he was shopping in a target score when one, possibly two suspects, tried to carjack him. he lives in san rafael. he was shot twice. he's now recovering from surgery. he is expected to survive. it's not clear if the suspect or suspects got away with his vehicle. friends and fans are remembering a popular deejay whose killing has shocked members of san francisco's transgender community. abc 7 news was in the tenderloin for a vigil honoring anthony torres but many knew him as bubbles. he was playing music as he often did when an argument erupted and he was shot early saturday morning. >> nobody deserves to be treated like this, so we're here to -- we're all his friends here and

family to make sure that his voice is remembered. >> friends described torres as being an artist and an activist in the transgender community. they fear that torres may have been targeted because of how he identified. >> this was a hate crime. we need the city of san francisco to respond accordingly. we need the police department to respond accordingly. >> the police are saying there's no evidence to suggest a hate crime took place. detectives suspect torres' killer may have emerged from the new century strip club before firing the deadly shot. law enforcement cracking down on the illegal marijuana industry. "the chronicle" reports the black market for pot continues to thrive in several counties. police are busting illegal growers and sellers. they're trying to protect regulated dispensaries before recreational pot sales become legal in january. the district attorney says so far this year his department has raided 74 sites leading to 18 arrests. now a traffic alert.

morning. we do have some dark intersections due to some high winds this morning knocked out power in a few places. let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco for more on that. hi, everybody. not something that happens to us very often. we had thunderstorms down to our south that were rotating northwest towards us and watch how they collapse. when they collapse, the cold air from the top of the storm system accelerates as it descends down into the southern part, the lower part of the thunderstorm and then it hits the ground and fans out. because we have our valleys when you squeeze air it accelerates so it squeezed through the south bay and that's what created the damage there. now the low responsible for that, look familiar? yeah, we have a low like this. the remnants of a tropical storm humidity. that's what we're going to have today. look at this, 66 to 71 across san francisco and we're in the upper 60s to low 70s just about everywhere until you get to the north bay, mid to upper 60s and low to upper 70s.

here's some video of last year's event just to give you an idea what to expect. this is open to the public. you are invited to come if you'd like to be here to pay your respects. it will get started at 6:59. they'll ring the bell at that time. that's the time the south tower of the world trade center collapsed. they'll also read the names of the 343 firefighters who were killed on that day. we are at fulsome and 19th at fire station number 7. the fire chief says she always wants to plan this every year so people can always remember the sacrifices that firefighters and first responders made that day. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. okay, amy, thank you. here at the live desk some live images coming in from ceremonies around the nation commemorating 9/11 live at the pentagon. you see someone speaking right now and, of course, the president is there with his wife today marking 16 years since the 9/11 terror attacks. as you know flight 77 went

crashing into the pentagon taking the lives of 125 pentagon workers. ceremonies planned throughout the day all across the country. natasha, back to you. we continue to get stunning video out of florida as irma moves its way up the state leaving millions of people without power there. floods, winds, and even a massive fire just some of the issues they're dealing with right now. police there are dealing with another problem associated with irma, burglary and looting. already dozens of people arrested. >> 23 in miami-dade county. at least nine in ft. lauderdale, broward county. some carrying shoe boxes there. authorities say any suspected looters will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. airports across florida will be closed at least one more day. miami international plans to resume limited service tomorrow. you're looking at some of the last passengers to leave ahead of irma. orlando international will not reopen until crews assess the damage there.

we are waiting on when other airports will resume service. airlines say it will take several days to get back on schedule. >> it's one thing to talk about closing all airports in florida, it's another to actually see it happen. this flight map taken overnight from flight aware shows no planes over the state of florida. you can see what irma looked like early this morning. a small plane to the west of jacksonville appears to have had special clearance to land in panama city. the power of social media, a facebook post may have saved the lives of two manatees. they were found stuck in the muddy sea floor of sarasota bay yesterday. hurricane irma was still 100 miles away at the time but it had pulled the water from the shoreline into the storm's center. a group of friends spotted the stranded manatees and called for help on social. thousands of people shared that post quickly. eventually florida fish and wildlife conservation saw it and they helped rescue the animals. >> the death toll in mexico has

climbed to at least 90. last thursday's quake is the largest to hit mexico in at least a century. thousands of homes are damaged like this one. more than 800 aftershocks have rattled the region. the search is still on for whoever stabbed a man to death in downtown petaluma on saturday nearby bars and nightclubs were closing. a second person was stabbed and hurt. police say the suspect ran into a nearby parking garage and escaped. happening today the university of california launching a major effort to stem the rising toll of cancer. cancer is soon expected to overtake heart disease as california's leading cause of death. this year alone it will kill about 60,000 people. the plan being announced today by uc president janet napolitano will focus on better understanding cancer and finding new treatments. building for the impact of climate change was the focus after competition in the east bay. abc 7 news was in richmond where ten design teams took part in a

campaign called resilient by design yesterday. the program aims to protect bay area residents and cities from being impacted like rising sea levels. both san francisco and oakland airports are built very close to sea level along with many of our major highways. check out this rare animal spotted in wood side. do you know what this is because i have no idea? the photographer snapped a photo of this long-tailed weasel. mrent putting a time lapse on this. i'll have that posted in the next couple of hours. let's talk about what will happen today, sun and clouds. warm, not as hot as yesterday but still warmer than average and humid today leading to storms possible today. tomorrow a dip in the temperature wednesday. today near 70 at the coast. near 80 in san francisco. low to mid-80s around the bay. mid to upper 80s in the south bay. in the north bay we'll hit 90s. mid to upper 90s down around morgan hill. an hour by hour look at 7:00 this morning not much going on. noon, maybe a few showers developing down around the monterey bay. and they'll stay down there until 4:00 and then we'll get our chance as we head through the latter parts of the evening commute and through the overnight hours and into tomorrow's morning commute especially up in the north bay and then you can see they calm down. by noon tomorrow we'll get some isolated thunderstorms to develop. so most of us will miss out on that. it will slowly take our
