now from abc 7, live breaking news. >> and that breaking news, firefighters are battling a large brush fire in san mateo county that was sparked by lightning. cal fire says it's growing by the minute. near skyline boulevard and bear gulch road. many in san mateo can see the smoke rising from the vegetation burning in the hills above woodside. 100 firefighterses are facing steep, difficult conditions as they battle the blaze. abr 7 c 7 news reporter matt keller is live in woodside. there are some homes. are there evacuations at this point? >> reporter: there are no evacuations and there are no homes threatened. this is really in some very

isolated area up here in the mountains above san mateo and woodside. listen to this number, though, kristen, 1,000 lightning strikes yesterday in san mateo and santa cruz counties. seven fires were started by those lightning strikes. three of those fires are still burning. the biggest one is here above woodside. the smoke can be seen from miles and miles around. the good news, it's been dissipating over the past hour or so, as they've dropped a lot of water on this fire. take a look at this video from sky 7. smoke and flames coming off the mountains above woodside. only 10 acres right now. cal fire says 100 firefighters from local agencies are battling the flames, water drops being done by helicopters and air tankers. more could be on the way if needed. it's really remote. firefighters have to walk in about a mile to get to the flames or they're being taken there by helicopter. and then they repel to the ground. it is not threatening any homes as we said. no estimate on when they hope to

have it contained. obviously, a big concern, though, is the weather and firefighters are concerned that more lightning strikes could take place. for the latest on that, we're going to check in with meteorologist mike nicco. >> hey, matt, incredible video. i have a lot more respect for those firefighters than i used to. climbing down trees from a helicopter. holy cow. this is what it looked like last night. mother nature put on quite a show. we were expecting thunderstorms and she did not let us go without. check it out. all over the place. i just want to sit here and watch all these. we have to move on and talk about what happened. let's go back to live doppler 7. i have it set at 3:00 yesterday. first signs it was going to be an active afternoon and evening, showed up in the south bay. as we talked about those storms rotated all way up to the northnortheanort northeast and kept doing that for eight hours from 3:00 to 11:00. it was a long afternoon and evening of those showers -- lightning bolts. see them right there.

moving from southeast to northwest. this is what's going on right now. we still have a few showers out there. and you can see they're taking the same trajectory. right now, no lightning out of those particular storms. don't be surprised on the periphery right there on that edge between the bay area and the central valley, we're getting a little uplift due to those hills coming off that flat land and that natural lifting is what's creating those showers and thundershowers. now, when's the last time we used this? yes. the storm impact scale makes an appearance in mid-september. because we have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, again tonight, through tomorrow morning. brief downpours, gusty winds at times. in fact, the southern half of the bay area is under what's called a marginal risk for severe weather. the lowest risk but how often do we have a risk for severe weather, kristen? >> yeah, not frequently. all right. thank you so much, mike. we just got an alert from san mateo county, the fire matt's covering, kings mountain road

from woodside road to skyline is now closed due to the firefightinging. we'll keep you posted on that situation. meanwhile, the wild weather overnight made for a busy morning for pg&e crews. this video shows utility workers in san francisco's sunset district out around 8:00 a.m. working to restore power to homes near 35th avenue. there were reports of downed trees nearby. that took down power lines. and new numbers just in from pg&e show more than 1,000 customers around the bay area are still without power. the biggest chunk is in san francisco. 409 customers. on the peninsula, that number is 261. close to 200 customers without power in the north bay. roughly 100 each in the east bay and south bay. the utility says it will have dr crews working around the clock today. and developing news in san francisco, a few blocks in between union square and the tenderloin are back open now after a shooting and a car crash. multiple cars involved. a man has been hospitalized under mysterious circumstances. abc 7 news reporter amy

hollyfield is live on o'farrell street with the latest. amy? >> reporter: hi, kristen, yeah, this is a busy area right off union square. people were startled this morning to see the truck and two cars surrounded by crime tape in this intersection then were especially surprised to hear there was also a shooting involved. a chaotic scene unfolded near san francisco's union square this morning as people who were starting their day found themselves in the middle of a fra frantic situation. >> suddenly i hear crashing noises and one of the trucks hit. the bmw hit my car and i got shook. i was on the phone with a customer. i was like, this lady came by, oh, my husband got shot. >> reporter: a woman who was driving this silver car sideswiped the black car. which was sitting at a red light on o'farrell. >> i feel like i got hit maybe 40, 50 miles per hour, somewhere in between there. so it was a hard impact. it was a hard impact. >> reporter: police say the man in the car had been shot three

blocks away from here on o'farrell. the woman driving his car kept going. >> i didn't hear gunshots at all, nothing, nope, i'm inside the car and i just get swiped. she said she was on the way to take him to the hospital. >> there's a gentleman that ran across the street, tried to put gauzes on him. i was like, whoa. i was on the phone with my boss telling him i'm in a situation right now but i'm in shock right now. yes. seeing this terrible thing right now. >> reporter: the call came in at 6:26 this morning. the intersection was shut down until about 9:00 bringing quite a distraction to this busy area full of tourists, business travelers and working professionals. >> i'm just trying to get my day started here and then what happened, yeah. i'm fine, though. >> reporter: police spokesman says he doesn't know the condition of the man who was shot, just that he's being treated at a local hospital. they haven't made any arrests. they don't have any suspect information and also don't know what the motive could have been behind the shooting. live in san francisco, amy

hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. if you have the abc 7 app, you were alerted to the road closure in san francisco this morning. we sent out this push alert. download the app for free and enable push alerts to get breaking news any time. developing news in antioch, investigators are looking into a series of suspicious fires. contra costa county firefighters responded to seven fires between sunday night and yesterday morning. all within a three-mile radius. no one was hurt but now investigators are asking witness to come forward. they want to know if the fires are connected and whether an arsonist may be on the run. uc berkeley police will investigate a viral video captured after saturday's football game. the video shows an officer citing a hot dog vendor for selling food without a permit then confiscating his cash. police issued warnings to three other unlicensed vendors at the game. the video was then posted on facebook. it gained lots of attention from people who believe the man was unfairly targeted.

new developments in florida this morning, residents of the florida keys are returning home after hurricane irma. this is video of a checkpoint this morning where the highway patrol was letting cars back into florida city little by little and people are returning home to positive news. utilities say much of florida's east coast could have power back on by sunday. abc's molly hunter has the update. >> reporter: irma is now out of florida and what remains of her is marching north. in her wake, she left a path of devastation and so many homes without power. the storm's incredible force

unstoppable. in jacksonville, in northern florida, record-breaking flooding. the swollen st. john's river spilling into downtown and the city's mayor offering this advice. >> remind folks to put a white flag or something that represents a flight flag. we need to get you out. >> reporter: farther north in charleston, south carolina, this lake overflowing. >> that was where the lake was and, well, here's where it is now. >> reporter: and in atlanta, georgia, more than a thousand flights canceled. back in florida the monster storm made landfall not once, but twice. first in the keys, damaged homes as far as the eye can see. and boats ship wrecked. >> what can i tell you? you come home and see this, it's devastating. devastating. >> reporter: the second time on marco island, no power, no running water, almost two days later. >> we're encouraging people if you don't have to come back right now, don't. >> reporter: and up the coast in naples, wreckage like this,

hayward, newark, san francisco. oakland and san jose are rainfall amounts a little bit less than that as you can see right now. let's talk about what's going on right now. the way it looked earlier from the exploratorium camera. absolutely gorgeous. spectacular sunrise from the clouds left over from the last night's thunderstorm. there you go. doesn't it look gorgeous? when the sun starts to come over the bay bridge, that's when you know fall is almost here because you remember a couple months ago it was coming over the northern side of treasure island. all right. here's the way it looks from the golden gate bridge. gorgeous day if you want to walk across the bridge before the storms develop. not much of a breeze. pretty good visibility. it's a little hazy out there because of the humidity that's in the air. that's going to leave showers possible today and tomorrow. should say thunderstorms. more like it. and fall to seasonal highs are on the way in my accuweather seven-day forecast. already 80 mountain view. 80s in san jose. also down in gilroy. we've got mid 80s in the east bay. the rest of us in the 70s. even san francisco.

and along half moon bay. our temperatures, mid to upper 70s from half moon bay through san francisco over toward oakland, also richmond. see aeeverybody else in the 80s. going it be pretty warm and humid. the next 12 hours. 72 to 87, our spread at noon. see by 4:00, an isolated storm is possible. 69 the coast. 80s for the rest of us. by the time the sun sets, still on isolated chance of a thunderstorm. the chance increases as we head toward midnight. here's a look at tomorrow morning. see the green around. those are thunderstorms. the temperatures around 58 to 67 degrees. here's the setup. remember that area of low pressure from yesterday, it's a little farther south. going to come ashore the next 24 hours across the monterey bay. that's why the best chance of anything severe, which would be 58 mile per hour winds, 1 inch hil, or some really nasty winds like a tornado. we won't have that. that's going to be down to the south. f for the rest of us, through the rest of today, isolated storm possible. 7:00, nothing this evening.
