fire officials are fire officials are investigating what sparked this fire at a chemical plant outside kansas city that makes cleaning supplies. workers at the plant were reportedly transporting a flammable liquid from an outside storage plant. all of the 60 workers got out safely with one worker suffering burns on his arm. and next to london with a security scare at the school where prince george just started attending. has some people panicked. >> one woman was taken into custody accused of breaking into the school. abc's terry moran has more. >> reporter: it was such a heartwarming image, six days ago. prince william and prince george on the first day of school meeting the headmistress. and the presence pal --

good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now". tragic scene at a nursing home in florida..". tragic scene at a nursing home in florid tragic scene at a nursing home in florida. eight senior citizens dead after irma knocked out the air conditioning leaving them in the blistering heat. and one of the biggest hospitals in the area was yards away. several more are fighting for their lives. president trump heads to florida today for a firsthand look at damage caused by hurricane irma. he's going to naples and ft. myers but won't visit the keys in order to avoid disrupting recovery efforts. and the president taking a 13 year old up on the offer to mow the white house lawn. the 11-year-old boy who is a legal immigrant will show off his skills in the rose garden tomorrow. the white house says the president is committed to keeping the american dream alive. and attorneys for bill cosby

and one of his sexual assault victims are heading to court. it alleges the then assault of a 15-year-old girl at the playboy mansion nearly 42 years ago. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, september 14th. from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this half hour with another heartbreaking effect of hurricane irma. eight people have died at a florida nursing home. after the storm turned out the air conditioning. >> as they suffered in the heat, a major hospital was right across the street. the rest of the patients were finally evacuated. some of them are in critical condition. and now family members and state

officials are demanding answers. abc's marci gonzalez is there. >> reporter: senior citizens rushed out of this sweltering hot nursing home. more than a dozen admitted to the emergency room right across the street. at least eight killed after hurricane irma knocked out power to the facility's air conditioning system. >> i was in there. it was excessively hot. this is very tragic. it's very sad. >> reporter: a criminal investigation now under way. the nursing home's administrator saying in a statement, staff set up mobile cooling units and fans to cool the facility. our staff continually checked on the residents. but ellie says when she went to visit her mother after the storm conditions were brutal. >> how hot did it feel? >> it felt like 110, 115 degrees. >> reporter: another assisted living facility, this one in north miami also evacuated. the ac there not working. >> the generator failed. >> reporter: power crews working to get the electricity back on for nearly 3 million people. many of the outages in the keys where fema says about 90% of homes were damaged or destroyed. >> i didn't expect it to be this bad, honestly. >> reporter: as residents returned home, much-needed help rushing in. >> need food, water.

we should have evacuated. we thought we be okay. but -- >> reporter: and president trump plans to personally thank some of the people helping with the recovery efforts when he visits later today. >> police in the meantime have arrested a number of looters since the hurricane struck. yesterday they came across a more bizarre crime. officers in jacksonville, florida say these two men were caught red handed, trying to steal a utility pole. they had already strapped the pole to the top of their suv when police showed up. it's going to be tough to fight that case in court. and now to on a more serious note, one student is dead, three others are injured and a fourth in custody after a shooting at a high school near spokane, washington. two vigils were held last night, one at a church, another a candlelight vigil at a shopping

center. it comes as police look into what might have been an early warning from the shooter. here's clayton sandell. >> reporter: an active shooter call came in at 10:00 a.m. sending officers racing to this high school. >> one hit in the back. one in the arm. >> reporter: going room to room, finding multiple students shot. >> we have one more victim. >> fourth victim in a classroom. >> reporter: the shooter, a male student at fremont high came armed with multiple guns. one student tried to stop him. >> he attempted to fire one weapon. it jammed. he went to his next weapon. student walked up to him, engaged him. and that student was shot. that student did not survive. >> reporter: three other students were then shot and wounded. kids and teachers huddled in locked down rooms while parents rushed to the school waiting for news. the shooter is now in custody. >> i'm with the suspect in the vehicle and he is again telling

me he is the only shooter. >> reporter: a student warned that something bad was coming. >> he was handing out notes to his friends that he was going to do something stupid that might get him killed or in jail. when i talked to him about it he said it was just in case something stupid happened. >> reporter: he says that was passed on to school officials. police cannot confirm that. >> i don't think anybody can make any sense out of this. >> reporter: hospital officials say the three other teens who were wounded are in stable condition and expected to recover. like all schools these days, this school did practice lockdown drills and the last one was a day before this shooting. we also heard from students who thought it was just another drill, but of course it was the real thing. abc news, denver. a pregnant teacher who was from maryland and missing for more than a week has now been

found dead. and now her boyfriend is charged with her murder. police are awaiting autopsy reports for 31-year-old laura wallin. now tyler spoke with her family saying all that he cared about was that she could come back. he faces a bail review hearing later today. we're getting mixed stories about what happened at a dinner between the president and democrats. chuck schumer and nancy pelosi announced they reached an agreement with the president to fix daca and protect young immigrants from deportation. they also worked out a plan for border security that does not include the border wall, but white house press secretary sarah sanders disputed that, saying that excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to. pelosi was among those who gathered to discuss daca. ryan reportedly pledged to find a solution to the issue. he said removing the nearly 800,000 immigrants brought to the u.s. as children is not in our interests. the government has banned all federal agencies from using

antivirus software made by a russian firm. that company, kapersky labs, is based in moscow. researchers are concerned about its links to the russian government. they deny any unethical ties with russia. and an actor who brought some iconic wise guys to life has died. frank vincent was best known for his role as billy in "goodfellas" and in the sopranos. tmz reports he died at a new jersey hospital where he was undergoing open heart surgery. frank vincent was 80 years old. and larry king is breaking his silence over his lung cancer diagnosis. he tells extra he underwent successful surgery in july. the reason he's going public is to tell people to get that chest x-ray. the 83-year-old broadcaster says if he hadn't done that, the cancer would have progressed. new research is raising concern for pregnant women. the small study suggests that

cruel scene, senior citizens still in their beds rushed to safety. doctors and nurses surrounding them. a life-and-death situation at this nursing home. the rehabilitation center and hollywood hills. the first sign of trouble, an emergency call about a heart attack. but it soon became clear it was much more serious. >> the facility called and said that incidents were occurring. something's going on in the center, unknown how many patients or their injuries. >> reporter: what came next, an all-out evacuation. >> the scene was chaotic when i arrived. we had at least 115 patients that we were trying to evacuate and bring to safety. >> reporter: the scope of this tragedy heartbreaking. eight people dead, three at the nursing home and five more later at the hospital. the precise cause to be determined. several others in the er suffering from dehydration, respiratory conditions and heat exhaustion. the nursing home was running on generators since hurricane irma hit.

the lights on, but no air conditioning. this is the nursing home right here, and there's a large police presence. they've set up a command center over there. one of the first things we noticed when we got here is the heat. it's 90 degrees, but on our weather apps, the feels-like is 102 degrees. ellie pena came to visit her mother here shortly after the hurricane struck. >> you were inside. how hot did it feel inside? >> it felt like 110, 115 degrees in there. >> reporter: did you see the suffering? >> yes, i did, yes, i did. >> reporter: she says she called the power company several times and was told they would take care of it. what's more disturbing, the facility is yards away from one of the biggest medical facilities in the area. police are looking into whether some of the windows would not open. the health department had been in contact with the nursing home over the past three days and told them to call 911 if they had any reason to believe patients were at risk and still unclear, when did the first deaths occur? chief, how did this happen?

why weren't the patients transferred? >> well, you know, it's a sad state of affairs. we depend on those people in those facilities to care for our most vulnerable, elderly population. >> reporter: and other nursing homes in south florida now evacuating after the governor ordered first responders to check everyone in the area. the nursing home tells us here going to cooperate fully with authorities. we looked into the history of this nursing home. health inspectors have cited it 11 times in the last three years. tom llamas, abc news, hollywood hills. the president is heading to florida today, stopping in naples and ft. myers. >> the president is steering clear of the hard-hit florida keys so he doesn't disrupt cleanup and recovery efforts. the u.s. death toll has now risen to at least 30 and millions of people still have no power. >> the military is flying into key west where residents remain isolated with bare necessities in short supply. >> we got food and water so my

times its regular room rate during the storm. two gas station ownership groups are also charged. one of them is charged with selling fuel for almost $10 a gallon. those businesses could face stiff fines if found guilty. three teenagers are hospitalized outside of spokane, washington, after a shooting at their high school killed a fellow classmate. police say that student may have tried to talk his fellow classmate out of it just moments before he opened fire in the hallway. students say the suspect is described as being obsessed with previous school shootings was armed with a pistol and a rifle. >> he entered the school. he proceeded to take his weapons out. at that point, he attempted to fire one weapon. it jammed. he went to his next weapon. and a student walked up to him, engaged him. and that student was shot. that student did not survive.
