abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at the backup. >> i'm in the car but i've taken my seat belt off. we haven't moved in 30 minutes. i've never seen this. we have seen a little bit of movement but the wrong kind. a few cars going reverse on the shoulder so desperate to get out of this situation that they went backwards on the shoulder to try to exit. i'm not sure if they actually had success and got out of the mess but they were doing all they could. and here is why. look at the view from sky 7. according to alexis smith, our expert traffic reporter, i've heard her saying it's nine miles worth of a backup. we saw it as we were heading in further than our eye could see. further than our eye could see. why you want to avoid this area.

we're in dublin right now because of a big rig accident and it is a fatality. so you can expect they're going to be investigating this for a while which is the case when someone is killed. i did check in to see if they had a rough estimate when they'd open all these lanes and they open all these lanes and they didn't. jessica, i will send it back to you. >> thank you. >> amy hiing the nail on the head. this will not recover quickly. >> it isn't. anytime we have a fatality investigation, it will take hours. all these semis have to be offloaded. a semi has not been towed yet. this is nowhere near clearing.

71 to 74. 62 to 66 by 7:00. 8 to 12 gunshots were fired. matt keller joins us now live with what people living in the neighborhood have to do next. >> reporter: since i last saw you about an hour ago we have learned police are planning on being out here until at least dawn so they can get the sun light to look for bullet holes in cars and homes in this neighborhood. that is between the prune yard and downtown campbell. what a scary night especially if you received a phone call like this. >> keep your doors and windows locked. shelter in place for campbell avenue and poplar avenue and all surrounding streets. >> reporter: police responded to that call. they saw the man jumping to the side of the yard of a home on

cypress lane. he fired 8 to 12 gunshots. they shut down southbound lanes in hamilton avenue. he was arrested. >> this is where the training comes in and our officers and local jurisdiction who is assisted us are capable of handling it. we were able to do that without any injuries. >> the shelter in place was lifted after officers did another search to make sure there wasn't another suspect in the area. they're trying to figure out why he fired those shots. >> matt, thank you. uc berkeley doing everything it can to keep the peace. >> others were in violent protests like these.

bancroft will be shut down as a precaution. they promise to confront anyone wearing a mask. the group refuse outside the event. >> two men accused in the ghost ship fire plan to plead not guilty. a judge refused to throw out charges against the warehouse's master tenant derick almena and creative director max harris. they accuse prosecutors of having a weak case. the utility pg&e denies liability and issues a statement saying we see no evidence to date that would lead to us believe our facilities were the cause of the fire. they are cooperating with investigators. >> a police officer's stolen gun has been used in another homicide here in the bay area. now an investigation under way.

it was used in the homicide of 23-year-old who was shot during an apparent robbery in the mission. since the death of kate steinle new laws require firearms to be secured in an unattended vehicle. whether it was locked in the latest case is still unclear. >> the weapon is to be locked in a container affixed to the vehicle. this investigation is on going. >> the gun belonged to an unnamed, quote, highly decorated veteran of the department who is said to be devastated. no word on how long this investigation will take. happening today the first of a two-day hearing asking for a new trial for the man convicted of killing sierra lamar. torres was found guilty in the kidnapping and murder of the teenager. soon after he was sentenced to life without parole. lamar was last seen in march of 2012 walking to her school bus.

if you're just waking up and joining us, a major problem here in castro valley, westbound 580 essentially shut down just before eden canyon road all due to this crash. these vehicles inching along and we are nowhere close to clearing this. more crews are arriving on the scene. they have to offload the tractor-trailers. and we have a fuel spill as well. a nine-mile backup.

good morning. back to our breaking news this morning from sky 7. a live look at 580 just before you get to eden canyon road where we have a fatal crash.

this has been here since this morning, two semis along with a sedan. not much progress in clearing the crash. that investigation under way and we have miles and miles of backup. about nine to ten miles, well beyond the 680 interchange into the dublin/pleasanton area. this is amy hollyfield trying to get to the crash and they have not moved. they are just stuck in the backup. i'll talk about alternates. do not get on westbound 580. breaking news from the live desk. this is an update to earlier breaking news. the president spoke about daca, heading to florida and i can tell you the president and first lady now officially on their way to florida looking at the devastation left behind by hurricane irma.

you can see them boarding air force one. the president and his wife will visit naples and ft. myers. they will look at everything destroyed there and will then fly into ft. myers this morning and we expect them to arrive here shortly. they just took off. just getting going on their way to florida. happening today the b.a.r.t. board of directors is scheduled to consider another step in cracking down on fare cheaters. a new group of officers would patrol trains and stations with hand held fare inspection devices. officers would inspect everyone. the fine is $120 for adults, $60 for juveniles. it would be administrative and not criminal. >> sean spicer responding to melissa mccarthy's famous impression of him. the 45-year-old stopped by "jimmy kim live" for his first tv interview since leaving office. spicer walked out to dig

run between downtown and mission bay. the warriors plan to open chase arena that august. >> a look at sky 7 this morning and this is our major traffic issue. only thing getting by this fatal crash scene is the eden canyon road exit that is it. we checked in with chp and they said there's no estimate for any of the lanes reopening. this is where you're forced off the highway. miles and miles of backup to go. i'll zoom in and show you what this looks like. we're up to ten miles now, unfortunately, so head north and take the long way around and head up 24. that's an option as well.

good morning and welcome back. i want to take you back live over our major traffic issue this morning. this is westbound 580 in castro valley at eden valley road. all lanes are closed. the only thing you're seeing moving is the off ramp. this was a fatal crash that happened about 4:15 this is. some alternates in a few minutes. >> time now for ask finney this morning. frank has a question about the iphone 7. >> 7 on your side's michael finney has his answer. >> i just stepped up to the new iphone and i can't charge it and speak on the head phone at the same time.

good morning. i want to take you back to sky 7 now. we are over a major traffic problem this has been going on

since 4:10 this morning. eden canyon road. unfortunately this is a fatal crash and it all started off with some calls in to chp that a tractor-trailer broke down that was sitting in the left center lane. then a crash that involved a sedan and another semi. it was pinned between the two ptrucks. unfortunately, that person did not survive. the investigation ongoing. it always takes several hours. right now traffic wise we are looking at a really tough situation. only the off ramp is open to eden canyon road. all of 580 shut down. all of these folks are waiting to get off on to the off ramp. about an 11-mile backup at this point. we are looking at long delays back into the dublin area. it's well past 680 tip.

the surface street that runs the surface street that runs parallel and head north on 680. head into the sunol area. amy, how is it looking now? >> reporter: we're moving. we've gone 0.3 of a mile in an hour. we just witnessed two big rigs slam into each other. one rear-ended the other. they both hopped out of their truck, checked it out, no damage. a terrible situation here and then take a look at this video of what people are willing to do to get out of it. people on the shoulder trying to escape this terrible gridlock. and try to get on with their day and this is what they're trying to escape.

we've been sitting or these people have been sitting in this maybe up to two hours and aren't making much progress at all. if you avoid this area with the chp expected to be out here for an hours as they investigate this fatality. you will barely move here in the dublin area so you may as well go around or stay home. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> we've been seeing the craziest video this morning. people on the shoulder going in reverse trying to get out of that traffic. >> we'll look at our weather and mike nicco. >> reggie, natasha, i've overlaid the clouds. very light. here is a look at 280 and san jose.

a little bit cooler. check out the upper 60s. you might need to grab a coat. by 7:00 we're at 62 to 66 degrees. reggie, natasha? officers responded to a prowl e prowler and gunshots. >> reporter: we're in a very high-profile neighborhood. behind me is the prune yard and then highway 17 and the los gatos creek area. this gunman fired shots and then he hopped over the fence and that's where chp officers spotted him. here is what happened next. >> roll over on your stomach and keep your hands where we can see them. >> reporter: the officers shut down the area during this standoff. eventually the man was arrested.

this was a frightening night. the gunshots, 8 to 12 of them, and a row bow call telling them to shelter indoors and call police. that shelter in place was lifted around 4:00 a.m. bullet holes were found along with shell casings and campbell police were out here until at least the sun comes up. they need to see if they can spot them in this neighborhood. reporting live, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> on to more local news, uc berkeley doing everything it can to keep the peace in a speech by ben shapiro. >> previous speeches have resulted in this, violence, protests in the streets that have gone out of control. they formed a perimeter. now bancroft will be shut down now bancroft will be shut down as a precaution.

they promise to confront anyone. refuse fascism is calling for a nonviolent speakout outside the event. 76 faculty members at cal are calling for a boycott of classes during free speech month. steve bannon and ann coulter are set to speak. they want the school to cancel classes and all campus buildings in protest. president trump responding. >> the president met with nancy pelosi and chuck schumer last night. the democrats came out and said they reached an agreement to beef up border security and provide legal status for 800,000 immigrants brought to the country illegally as children. they said the package did not include money for a border wall. but then the president went to twitter a few hours ago and wrote no deal was made last night on daca.

massive border security in exchange for consent would be subject to a vote. he wrote, does anybody want to throw out good, educated and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military. really? confusing if an agreement gets reached, congress will still have to approve. pittsburg police arrest add woman in connection with a fatal hit-and-run. angela spikes was the driver of a car that hit and killed a 40-year-old woman. it happened on railroad avenue. the cause is still under investigation. a lawsuit is expected to be filed against b.a.r.t. in connection with the robbery in april. an estimated 50 to 60 teenagers swarmed a train at the coliseum station robbing passengers.

four people victimized are part of the lawsuit. two others have also joined the suit. >> the state assembly has approved a plan to rage area bridge tolls by up to $3. it heads to the senate. if approved and signed by the governor the proposal would be on the ballot in june or november of next year. more than 600,000 vehicles enter and exit on any given weekday and he says that number will only grow. the money raised would pay for improvements to reduce congestion on bridge corridors. it would cost weekday commuters as much as $700 more a year. helping police arrest a suspect on an attack by a woman. a photo of 36-year-old sherry on social media. the tip led officers to her. they say she hit and kicked a 67-year-old woman.

the victim is expected to be okay. people in almeida can use the water to shower and bathe. don't drink it. the bathing restriction was lifted yesterday. homeowners are warned to let the water run for ten minutes to flush out the pipes. officials are waiting for more tests. east bay mud says they think it was contaminated by a leak. before the legislative session ends tomorrow scott weiner plans to ask colleagues to reconsider his safe injection bill. that bill would allow san francisco to open up safe sites francisco to open up safe sites for drug addicts to use. >> cracking down on property owners who violate the ban on advertising short-term rentals.

the city will begin notifying property owners who violate the ban on october 1st. violators have 15 days from the date of notice to stop advertising their property or any part of it. neighbors complained about the noise, garbage and traffic that renters bring. beer and wine bottles could be banned. the city's board of supervisors will debate the plan next week. it's the result of the persistent trashing of delores park. the safety committee signed off yesterday. they scratched it for littering. that could unfairly penalize low-income residents. take you back live to sky 7. i'll step out of the way now that we have more daylight here on 580. at eden canyon road and castro valley you see the mess they are dealing with. this is a huge problem that started around 4:10 this morning.

you see that first big rig that was actually clipped, hit by a sedan and that is why that rig became disabled. that second big rig hit that and we don't know how fast but obviously it was enough to cause a really serious collision here this morning. there's a fuel spill involved and about an 11-mile backup. that goes well beyond 680 at this point so whatever you do, do not get on westbound 580. more alternate options in a few minutes. i want to check in on the bay bridge commute. let's check in on our forecast with mike nicco. good morning, mike. >> good morning, alexis. the transition to cooler overnights beginning this morning.

that puts us 56 in saratoga. 55 in los gatos. cupertino, everybody else around 60 to 65 in the south bay. everybody else about 60 to 65 degrees. here is a look at what's going on. san mateo bridge looking west into the abyss of fog that's out there. mass transit comfy. if you're going to be on the bay it will be breezy, about 9:00 this morning. about 3:00 this afternoon, south of the bay bridge. mid-70s in the east bay. about 70 to 74 around the bay in mid to upper 60s along the coast and into san francisco and sausalito. tomorrow inland. everybody else about the same and warmer for saturday. mid to upper 80s inland.

good morning, back live to sky 7. they are over this major traffic alert westbound 580 still shut down at eden canyon road. the thicker line of vehicles on the left is westbound 580. those folks are not moving. in the middle a little on looker delay there. and then the thinner line of traffic that also isn't moving is dublin canyon road that a lot of folks are trying to take for an alternate. that's a little bit better than the main line of 580 but not much. amy hollyfield is stuck on 580 as well sitting behind a semi

i can tell you it is certainly trending on social media right now. >> lots of people talking about what a gift from her friend. thanks for bringing that to us. age 18 remains the age to vote. the amendment to loerp the age to 17 did not get the super majority it needed to pass the assembly. evan lowe, who represents the south bay, authored the amendment. in the 2014 general election only 8% of voters aged 18 to 24 cast ballots. legislation to spare us from springing forward and falling back every year will be reintroduced in january. san jose assemblyman shoo will have them take up his bill when they reconvene in 2018. he says research shows there's an uptick if work place accidents when the time change happens. a similar bill was rejected over concerns about the impact on businesses and putting california an extra hour behind other states for half the year. happening today a free eve being held for job seekers in

san francisco. high hi hire live. companies registered for the event include adt securities, new york life, state farm, and the u.s. postal service. the job fair is from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. held at the san francisco marriott marquis on mission street. here is your morning money report. hurricane irma destroyed the majority of citrus crops. >> this is bad news. citrus brings in $8 billion a year for florida but officials estimate between 50% to 70% of crops are a total loss. state senators are pushing for a tax relief bill to help farmers. of course this is leading to a spike in the cost of orange juice. the gender wage gap has improved slightly. the u.s. census bureau says women are earning about 80 cents to every dollar their male peers make and as bad as that sounds it is the first statistically significant increase to the

gender pay gap since 2007. not all women are faring as well. black women earn roughly 67 cents on the dollar. hispanic women earn about 60 cents. 22,000 olive gardens, pasta passes will go on sale this morning. the regular pass is $100. you can eat as much pasta as you want for eight weeks. 50 lucky people can pay an extra $100 for an eight-day trip to italy including airfare, hotel accommodations and meals for two. as for taxes olive garden says you only have to pay taxes on the $200 pass not the entire trip. now over to alexis with the story of the morning. people who are sitting. i just got tweeted from someone who is stuck on 580 who said i was giving out the warning and he said, too late, i'm already there. >> we are looking at a huge mess now all happening on westbound 580 in castro valley at eden canyon road and we have a huge mess to clean up still at this point. a few more details in from chp

sounding like at least 9:00 or 10:00 before we get the lanes back open this morning and all lanes are shut down. everyone being forced all at eden canyon road. you saw the slow trickle. this is dublin canyon road. a lot of folks taking that for an alternate. it is moving quite a bit better than the main line is. so that's one choice if you're leaving the dublin area. it's not moving fast but better than 580. head north on 680 and take crow canyon out of the dublin area. seriously, we are looking at about an 11-mile backup at this point. i will flip over and show what you that looks like on our traffic maps, maybe even more than 11 miles at this point. surface streets are getting congested as you can imagine. you can take the long way around and head north on 680 trying to get into the oakland area. you should be okay from that point. southbound 680 filling in. honestly that's a lot better than getting on 580, even 84

with our typical delays looking better as well. so not a lot of great options. mass transit is one of those for you as well. b.a.r.t., no delays this morning, and you can catch an ace rail, too. in the meantime one new problem here right around sfo, southbound 101 past milbrae avenue, a car crash blocking three lanes. so that is another bad spot if that continues to be blocking for much longer. we'll keep an eye on that one, too. let's check in with mike nicco with a look at our forecast. we'll start with your school day forecast, 59 to 62. a little bit of drizzle this morning but then look at the sunshine. 64 around the coast. 71 to 75 this afternoon for our bay and inland neighbors. get outside and enjoy. the sun is almost up. the cloud cover that's giving us the drizzle but then the dry air comes in and brings us sunshine this afternoon. fewer clouds. much cooler tonight, 40s and 50s, and seasonal highs, then
