now from abc 7, live breaking news. >> that breaking news is in san leandro tonight where police are hunting for a suspect who ran over two of their own. good evening. i'm eric thomas. the incident happened in the parking lot of a safeway around 8:30 this evening. let's get to lilian kim. and what are you learning? >> reporter: eric, the officers were struck near the front of

the safeway parking lot. this area is cordoned off as investigators try to piece together what happened. what they do know is that the officers were struck by a moving car. they were trying to stop a man suspected of shoplifting alcohol from safeway. but the suspect ignored the officers' orders and instead put his car in gear and began driving as the officers were trying to prevent him from the get away. the officers involved were a male and female who happened to be in this area on patrol. we spoke to a witness who saw the whole thing. >> he drove going forward, and he hit that suv. so what it is, as soon as he hit that suv, he backed up and that's when the officer fell behind the other officer. he must have hit him because he was complaining about his knees. he couldn't get up. >> these are police officers out here to enforce the law and engage with individuals. we expect people to comply with the police when we ask them to stop, and this situation did not take place the way that we hope.

>> reporter: the officers were taken to the hospital. the extent of their injuries is not known at this time but they're not expected to be life-threatening. the suspect is at large. san leandro police are looking for safeway security video in hopes of getting a better description of him. lilian kim, abc 7 news. turning to our other top story, what would you do if a note suddenly dropped into your lap saying there 24 guns pointed at you. the note is what was staring one woman in the face on b.a.r.t. this weekend. tonight she's talking to abc 7 news reporter alyssa harrington about what happened. >> reporter: that victim tells me she would have handed over her things but had a flight to catch out of the country the next day and needed her i.d. she does not want to press charges but does want this story out there. >> i was really scared. probably maybe the most scared i've ever been. >> reporter: julie is still shaken up, completely caught off guard and terrified after a

stranger dropped a threatening note on her lap while riding b.a.r.t. this happened saturday afternoon near civic center station in san francisco. she was riding a dublin-bound train and shared this picture on twitter. the note says there are two guns pointed at you now. if you want to live, hand back your wallet and phone now and do not turn around. she didn't turn around but did try to summon help from other riders. >> there's a man standing maybe ten feet in front of me. i tried to make eye contact with him and mouthed help. and he pointed his phone and got off at the next stop. he might have called the police but i realize that wasn't going to help me at the time. >> reporter: ragland decided to make a scene and faked a seizure. so i started like slumped over to the left and started like shaking. and people started to notice. and they were like, are you okay? >> reporter: her plan worked. the commotion spooked the would-be robber who got off at the next stop.

b.a.r.t. is taking the matter seriously. a spokeswoman responded to the tweet saying, i called the watch commander to make sure they were aware. someone called it in and we have the train number so we can pull the footage to i.d. a suspect. she did not see the person who left the note but thinks it was an older woman who she noticed dragging a suitcase past her sight. in san francisco, elissa harrington, abc 7 news. the student group seeking to hold free speech week at uc berkeley one week from today appears to be having trouble meeting the university's requirements. university officials are raising a long list of concerns with the organizers putting the entire event in doubt. the big names supposedly headlining next week's free speech week at uc berkeley. an event spearheaded by the group berkeley provide. university officials say while the group submitted a signed contract by friday's deadline they failed to pay fees for the

campus venues. c berkeley's spokesman said this failure to confirm, combined with the refusal to provide unqualified speaker lists and schedules has led the campus to question whether berkeley patriot intends to or is able to carry out the event. >> the last time we had an outright rally in berkeley, these people didn't show up. >> reporter: she's close the following the developments. she's among 200 professors and graduates who signed a letter urging colleagues and students to boycott the campus during free speech week if the event goes on as scheduled. >> it's four days. it won't happen, right, but it's -- it was planned as a major disruption of teach, of creation, of absolute chaos. >> in a facebook post, berkeley patriot says they'll move their speakers outside if they have to. this arrangement isn't ideal for either party involved so we'd welcome the university choosing to come back to the table and

allow us to continue with the indoor venues. the student group went on to say they'll have more comment on monday. turning to the weather, two more hurricanes are in the atlantic tonight. one could be headed straight for puerto rico. our meteorologist drew here. >> this is hurricane maria, category 1. winds right now 90 miles per hour. going to rapidly strengthen by this time tomorrow. already a category 3 storm and here is the bad news. it looks to strengthen even more to a category 4 storm as it moves over puerto rico and into a category 3 storm over turks and caicos. we'll keep our eye on that storm. another system, hurricane jose off the eastern seaboard. 90s-mile-per-hour wind. this will approach parts of new england and then curve back out to sea but tropical storm watches are in effect from delaware to cape cod for gusty winds and strong rip currents.

we'll take a much closer look at our local forecast here that includes cooler temperatures to start off the workweek. that's in the forecast in a few minutes. local heroes who answered a call to help florida's hurricane victims came back home today. abc 7 news was at menlo park as members of search and rescue three finished their cross-country drive. for some, their latest deployment was not easy because it immediately followed a trip to help victims of hurricane harvey in houston. >> they're missing their families but they knew of their background, they were the ones for the job. there's nobody else that's going to do it. >> the team kept watch over the northern parts of florida which thankfully escaped major damage from irma. there's extensive damage to businesses in st. louis following another night of protests. a group marched through the downtown area of the city breaking windows and vandalizing

businesses. several arrests were made. the protests were organized in response to last week's acquittal of a white former officer in the shooting of a black driver. we're learning more about a san jose officer who killed a suspected gang member. mike pena shot and killed the 33-year-old man after stopping a car friday evening. pena is an 11-year even of the police force. the suspect had a warrant out for his arrest when officers stopped him near penitencia creek and north white road. they plan to give more details in a news conference tomorrow. an annual service was held today to pay respects to fallen san mateo professionals. it was for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in honor to their communities. this is the 16th year of the event.

today, dozens of pets forced out of their shelters arrived in the bay area. now they need good homes. tiffany wilson has the story. >> reporter: this private plane is full of very important passengers. 33 dogs, 30 cats, each a survivor of hurricane harvey. >> there's a huge problem now that 80,000 people lost their homes. so as a consequence, a lot of pet owners don't have a home to take their pet to. >> reporter: by bringing shelter animals to the area, space opens up for displaced pets. it's a lesson learned for

hurricane katrina. >> only 15% of all petss got reunited because they were just shipping them all over and people couldn't find them. >> reporter: the cats and dogs will find new permanent homes thanks to groups like the milo foundation. >> we had people that had katrina dogs. we're here to adopt harvey animals because we know they really need a place. >> reporter: families filled out adoption forms at the pet fair today. >> we're very happy. especially for kids. they want a dog in the house. >> reporter: some of the hurricane rescues are in pretty rough shape but lynn says that hant stopped families from falling in love. >> probably half of the first load of animals from harvey went to foster homes that are failed fosters because they're actually adopting their dog. >> reporter: and the pets care organizers want to emphasize it's not just hurricane rescues that are deserving of a forever home. there's many great local cats and dogs in need as well. >> they're not second-hand

animals or damaged animals. they are good animals who just found themselves in a wrong situation. our goal is to get them in the right situation. >> reporter: and in the right home. this vanload of cats and dogs is headed to the milo foundation where first order of business is a bath, some cuddles and food. then later on this week they'll be available for fostering or adoption. in hayward, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. marines came together today to help a fellow bay area service member who had his family's belongings stolen last month. abc 7 news was at moffitt field where raphael aldama received a $10,000 check. we first told you about his ordeal on abc 7 news. he had just relocated to santa rosa with his wife and daughter when someone stole his uhaul truck. a call went out for donations. >> part of the money to get furniture and household items. it adds up as well. this will be able to put us back

on our feet to what we're working for. >> the stolen property is still missing. no arrests have been made. as nfl teams played their second week of games, former 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick has been working out and is ready to play. he ignited loads of controversy when he refused to stand for the national anthem before games last season. many observers feel nfl teams are avoiding kaepernick because of what he called a protest against police brutality. one of the warriors' biggest stars served as a grand marshal at sonoma raceway. >> drivers, start your engines. >> he made a splash because he's a splash brother. the voice belonged to the man waving the green flag, warriors guard klay thompson. he got a chance to meet mario andretti. and since thompson suited up like a race driver as you see in this video, he took a ride with one. davy hamilton chauffeured him around the track at sonoma.

stranded hikers who can't hear someone calling for them. you are looking at a training session in the utah desert for rescuers learning to find people with hearing impairments. >> they would like to have deaf actors involved in what's happening today. hi, my name is brookes. last name anderson. it's awesome to see how search and rescue what they do because it's a good preparation for them to know if they find somebody who is deaf. >> a big part of yesterday's training focused on knowing when to call someone who can use american sign language. an eight-month nasa experience that put six people in complete isolation in hawaii came to an end this weekend. the agency placed the scientists under a dome for eight months at the base of hawaii's largest active volcano. they simulated living on mars eating freeze dried food and being self-sufficient.

nasa hopes to send humans to mars by the 2030s. to the incredible comeback of an army veteran who was severely wounded in afghanistan. not letting the loss of limbs stop him from fulfilling his dream of becoming a doctor. here's abc news reporter ron claiborne. >> reporter: may 2011, army captain greg was nearing the end of his deployment in afghanistan. he was on his way back to camp from patrol. >> walking down the road. out of nowhere, hit by a roadside bomb. >> reporter: his legs were blown off. his right arm nearly severed. no medic could help treat him or give him painkillers. >> just felt like i got hit by a wrecking ball. all i could do was scream. >> reporter: that was just the beginning of what he calls the nightmare. the constant pain. the shock of loss of limbs. >> i entered one of the darkest periods of my life wondering, am i ever going to be happy again? do i want to live anymore. >> reporter: little by little, he regained his strength,

physical and mental. even before he was wounded he decided to become a doctor. now inspired by his caregivers, he resolve to. and his first pre-med class he met his now fiance jasmine. he was discharged from the army in 2015 and kept studying. last year he was accepted by harvard medical school and a few weeks ago, he began his first year. at 31, the old nest his class. >> i've had some of the most amazing, fulfilling and enriching experiences of my life since my injury. i found i still had a lot to give. >> reporter: he says his nightmare is now behind him. today, his dreams realized. ron claiborne, abc news, new york. still ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00 -- it came out of nowhere but touched oakland residents. a poem about the ghost ship warehouse fire scrawled on a public space. so why is it getting painted?

in oakland, a mystery about a protest poem in response to the ghost ship fire that left 36 people dead, some call it art. others call it graffiti. on either side of the issue, wayne freeman reports the whitewashing of that poem has touched nerves. >> reporter: if oakland believes in the power of words it may have a quandry. until recently what had been this memorial for victims of the ghost ship fire is gone except for a wilted bouquet or two. now it's been replaced by that quandary of words. >> madness needs no logic. >> art needs no logic.
