>> i think a few jaws dropped. >> yes, they did. good morning to you all. we're going to start things off today with hurricane threats increasing in the caribbean and all the way up the east coast. >> yeah, and right now millions of people are under a tropical storm watch from delaware to massachusetts as hurricane jose closes in. this is a very rare thing for many parts of the northeast and hurricane maria is making its way toward the leeward islands which includes barbuda and st. martin, both hit very hard by irma. >> there have been a number of projections as to where maria will go next, but most forecasts have the system passing over puerto rico, the dominican republic and haiti, and the hurricane is also expected to gain strength. >> now, in addition to jose and maria, tropical storm lee is churning in the atlantic. busy times now, but maria is causing the most concern. this morning, the caribbean bracing for a new hit.

hurricane maria gathering strength overnight and now watches and warnings posted for the same islands that got devastated by hurricane irma. >> any type of rain, any type of wind that we have as a result of maria will devastate those that are already devastated further. >> reporter: islands like barbuda and st. martin, its residents still scrambling for food, clean water and power and now another hurricane on the doorstep with no roof overhead. >> hope we're going to make it. we strong people so one day we must rise again. >> reporter: people in florida also closely watching maria's path and the keys now fully open more than a week after irma. the tens of thousands who fled the storm's wrath finally making it home to see what's left. >> it's heartbreaking, and now i'm going to have to think about rebuilding. >> and as the caribbean keeps a close eye on maria, millions of people on the east coast will feel the effects of jose. >> gusty winds, heavy rain and

beach erosion are all possible. accuweather's paul williams has more. >>, good morning, diane, kendis. now, with jose's impact although jose expects to weaken as it gets a little bit closer to the southern new england states, we anticipate localized flooding, sporadic power outages and travel disruptions for the mid-atlantic, southern new england and throughout most of the new england states. now, we're expecting heavy seas, rough surf, coastal flooding, strong rip currents and gusty winds between 50 to 60-mile-per-hour winds as a result of jose just getting close, then there's maria ripping across those areas that are still trying to recover from irma as a category 2 over the windward islands, category 3 over puerto rico and hispaniola going into friday so we're expecting flooding and rainfall, damaging winds inundated seas and a hindered recovery effort because of the storm. diane, kendis. >> and, of course, south florida will keep an eye on it too. paul, thank you. but now to st. louis where police say they arrested more than 80 people overnight

during a third consecutive evening of violent demonstrations. >> large groups of protesters were out during the day with no trouble. but once night fell, protest organizers say a small number of people became violent breaking windows and damaging property. >> and police even displayed weapons that were recovered from those taken into custody. police say none of them were actually used in confrontations with authorities. >> and the anger was sparked by a judge's decision on friday to acquit a white police officer, jason stockley, in the 2011 killing of a black man, lamar smith. well, here in new york the president returns to the world stage this morning kicking off his week where he will attend the united nations general assembly. >> the president is hosting a meeting today on u.n. reform before addressing the assembly tomorrow for the first time. north korea and iran are expected to be major topics of discussion. abc's arlette saenz joins us from d.w. with more. arlette, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, diane and kendis. nearly 200 world leaders will descend on new york city this week for the u.n. general assembly, but the one leader

that will be most closely watched is president trump. president trump makes his debut at the u.n. general assembly, his most prominent moment yet on the world stage. in his hometown, the president comes face-to-face with the very organization he criticized as a candidate. >> the united nations is not a friend of democracy. it's not a friend to freedom. it's not a friend even to the united states of america. >> reporter: the president's week features back-to-back meetings with world leaders, the schedule described by one analyst as speed dating from hell. the marquee moment comes tuesday when the president addresses the 193-member body for the first time. at the top of the president's agenda, how to rein in north korea after its repeated missile launches and its most powerful nuclear tests yet. >> if north korea keeps on with this reckless behavior, if the united states has to defend itself or defend its allies in any way, north korea will be destroyed, and we all know that and none of us want that.

none of us want war. >> reporter: another issue, what will the president do about the iran nuclear deal brokered by president obama. the white house has hinted the u.s. may pull out of the agreement, which our closest allies still support. >> what we have to make sure is that no deal can provide cover for the iranian regime to develop a nuclear weapon in a clandestine manner while they're reaping all the benefits of this deal. >> reporter: now, two leaders not attending the meeting are china's president xi jinping and russian president vladimir putin. both of these leaders are critical in pressuring north korea, but president trump won't have a chance to speak to them and share his concerns in person. diane and kendis. >> apparently both of them are not fans of speed dating as well, arlette. thank you. appreciate it. >> he meant that in the best possible way. >> yeah, exactly. thanks, arlette. and the trump administration is considering shutting down the u.s. embassy in cuba following a string of incidents harming the health of americans there.

at least u.s. 21 diplomats and their families have been affected. some of them suffered permanent hearing loss and mild brain damage after feeling vibrations or hearing loud sounds, which investigators say could be a sonic attack. cuba has denied any involvement. all right. let's return to our top story and take a look at your weather. the first of two new storms is coming into the northwest today bringing the first decent rainfall in months. the second system arrives tomorrow night and is stronger. both should greatly help firefighting efforts in the region. temperatures in the northwest will likely top out around the 60s today. great falls will only reach 64. los angeles and chicago both have highs around 78 degrees and we expect a high of 95 in dallas. 90 in new orleans but only about room temperature in the northeast. still ahead, a new security

american college students recovering from an acid attack at a train station in france. police arresting a 41-year-old woman for allegedly spraying them with hydrochloric acid. two of the women rushed to the hospital suffering facial burns. the other two treated for shock. the students all attend boston college. this morning the college juniors returning to paris where school officials tell abc news they plan to complete their semesters abroad before returning to the u.s. >> one of the students will have to see an eye doctor tomorrow. >> reporter: while acid attacks are rare, the survivors trust international estimates there are around 1,500 reports of acid attacks a year around the world. authorities in marseilles saying the alleged attacker has a history of psychological problems and don't believe the attack is related to terrorism. james longman, abc, london. meanwhile, british police have a second man in custody in connection with friday's subway bombing. as a result the country's terror

threat level has been lowered to severe believing another attack is likely but not imminent. police are questioning the two suspects and searching two addresses. a top british official says there is no evidence that isis was behind the attack. back in this country, a memorial mass and prayer vigil will be held this evening for a louisiana state university student who died. hospital tests found a high blood alcohol level in maxwell gruver's body. police are investigating his death as a possible hazing. the local chapter has been suspended beth by the phi delta theta fraternity and university. there is a warning about scammers trying to trick consumers worried about that equifax hacking scandal. federal officials say crooks claiming they want to verify account information are trying to trick people into giving out personal and financial data. the equifax hack potentially affected 143 million people, nearly half the country. and when we come back, kevin hart's emotional apology to his wife and kids. but what exactly is he admitting to? and hear why the fbi is now getting involved.

that's one less ambulance to serve a community. i just don't want to let these people down. excedrin migraine. relief that works as hard as you do. you're looking at some footage of a small plane that crash landed near san diego after losing power. the single engine piper came down in the middle of the street in el cajon on sunday afternoon right in front of a church. firefighters arrived to find it tilted on its side with a broken wing but pilot and passenger had already made it out safely. a former eagle scout appears in a baton rouge court accused of methodically shooting and killing two black men. >> in each case police say the gunman fired from a car then walked up to the victims and shot them several times. 23-year-old kenneth gleason is being held right now on drug charges and only $3,500 bond. now police say they don't have enough evidence yet to charge him with the killings. they believe the shootings were likely racially motivated.

and there were some terrifying moments at a fair in north carolina over the weekend as a worker climbed up the ferris wheel to fix a car with two kids stuck inside, but then he lost his balance and fell to the ground as families watched. now, amazingly he only suffered minor injuries. the children on that ride are okay. actor kevin hart says an alleged extortion plot is the reason he posted a heartfelt statement on instagram. in the video hart apologizes for his actions to his wife and his kids but he never actually says what those actions are. now, hart says that he would rather publicly confess than have someone gain financially because of his mistakes. hart married his wife last year. she is pregnant with their first child. 11 people are seriously injured after a crash at a car show in boise, idaho. a porsche boxster spider plowed into the crowd at the monthly cars and coffee event. witnesses say bodies, shoes, phones all went flying through the air. some of those taken to the hospital were children.

>> only one blocking issue this morning, northbound 680 just before you get to auto mall parkway. a roll over collision. landed on the shoulder but the fire department is on the scene blocking the far right lane. no delays and, of course, that is the counter commute direction as well. a quick check outside. the bay bridge toll plaza. a stackup on the far left side for the cash lanes, maybe on the right as well. overall we're off to a good start. >> alexis, thank you. the search is still on for whoever ran over two san leandro police officers and sped away last night. >> one of those officers is still in the hospital this morning. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live where this all happened. amy? >> reporter: hi, good morning, reggie. look behind me. this is the patrol car of the officers who were injured in this attack, an officer who was here just moments ago is looking into how to pick this up, this car. he says the department definitely has an urgency to catch the man who did this. this happened at 8:30 last night

in san leandro at the greenhouse marketplace. the officers were trying to arrest a man who was shoplifting from the safeway. they say they got to his car. they still had hold of him when he sped away hitting them with his car. a witness said it was tough to watch. >> oh, i feel so bad. i was shaken up. i was really shaken up witnessing that. especially the officer really getting hurt. >> reporter: the female officer is still in the hospital, the male officer, her partner, was treated and released. the officer here at the safeway just moments ago was telling me that the woman is going to be okay. she has some broken bones but is going to survive. reporting live in san leandro, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. happening today house minority leader nancy pelosi will join bay area elected officials to call for the passage of the d.r.e.a.m. act. lee and huffman will be at college track, a student success program in san francisco, to
