this morning. another look at traffic. >> thank you, alexis. san leandro police looking for the suspect they say ran over two of their officers. police say the officers were trying to stop a suspect after he shoplifted from the store last night. that's when the suspect jumped into his car, drove off and then hit the officers. both were taken to the hospital. one released. the other still recovering from broken bones. she is expected to survive. gilroy firefighters and police are investigating the cause of a two-alarm fire at the salvation army building. a tractor-trailer caught fire in the loading dock. no one was inside the building at the time and no firefighters were hurt. someone hands you a note on b.a.r.t. saying you have to give up your wallet and phone or else. >> this is such a crazy story.

the woman had to get creative and fast. matt keller is live for us in daly city. matt? >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. this is where the woman boarded her train on saturday here in daly city. she was handed that terrifying note while the train was heading through san francisco. what did she do? she faked a seizure. >> so i slumped over to the left and started shaking and people started to notice. they were like, are you okay? >> reporter: the stranger dropped a note near civic center station. the note said there are two guns pointed at you now. if you want to live hand back your wallet and phone now and do not turn around. she didn't turn around but tried to get the attention of those around her mouthing the word help. she faked her seizure. her plan worked. the commotion scared the would-be robber who got off at

the next stop. a b.a.r.t. spokesperson says they have the train number so they can pull the footage to i.d. the suspects. so far no photo has been released to the public and so far no arrest announced. >> matt keller, abc 7 news. >> we're glad she made it out okay. >> more about a deadly officer involved shooting. mike pena shot and killed a suspected gang member friday night. this morning that officer on paid administrative leave. officers say he would not cooperate leading up to the shooting. our media partner "the mercury news" reports family members have identified him as dominguez. hospitals and clinics across california will be taking a stand today. they're rallying for safe staffing. the california nurses

some of the latest images. a commuter bus crashed in queens and seven of those folks hurt do have serious injuries. still a lot of activities. i have been monitoring things. they are still addressing the situation. those buses actually crashed into nearby businesses so officials trying to figure out if that building is structurally sound at this point. the story gaining national headlines. i want to show you this as well because these were some of our first images from the scene. this is why the story is important. there are a sheer number of tourist that is go to new york city every single day. they ride those tour buses. we are working on getting you the very latest information. i will be watching for updates. natasha? >> we appreciate the update. san rafael officials want your input on a permit parking system. the study found the canal area is short an average of 580 street parking spots so today the city will host a public session to discuss a proposed parking permit fee. that meeting begins at 5:30 at city hall. a consulting firm will present

its plans to city council in the fall. community, business, and labor leaders in oakland will announce their support for the a's plan to build a new ballpark near laney college. supporters will meet at 11:00 at the oakland marriott. the a's chose the property between 8th street and interstate 880 for a new stadium that is not too far from lake merritt. now this would be privately financed. opponents say it would cause a lot of disruption including relocating the offices of the peralta community college. happening today 49ers safety eric reid will undergo an mri after injuring his knee during yesterday's game in seattle. he hurt his left knee in the first half, returned briefly and then walked off the field for good. the niners lost 12-9 and are now 0 and 2. anger and outrage in st. louis. a third night after an officer is acquitted.

we'll start with the peninsula. your neighborhood temperatures, namely 63 to 65. book end by 59 in menlo park and in daly city. to the south bay, low to mid-60s. we're in the low to mid-60s in the north bay. here's the way it looks on the golden gate bridge, a light breeze this morning. small craft advisory north of the bay bridge for the afternoon hours. if you're going to be on our beaches no heat if you're going to be out exercising. a real fall flavor to the forecast. i'll show you that up next. here's alexis. >> still no change here in walnut creek. 680 where we're struggling to move along. we have a backup basically all the way up to 242 and highway 4 from a couple crashes. one just before you get to north main and the other before state route 24.

6:14 now. st. louis is bracing for a fourth day of protests after dozens of arrests overnight. protesters are angry over the acquittal after white police officer in the shooting death of an african-american man. vandals hit several businesses last night.

several officers were also attacked but are expected to be okay. >> we made more than 80 arrests. we confiscated at least five weapons, none of them were used. >> new demonstrations erupted after the department of justice revealed it would not pursue federal charges in the 2011 police shooting. former officer jason stockley denies intentionally shooting lamar smith and planting a gun. he says he acted in self-defense. some live images from st. louis right now. folks there were just marching through the streets. they have now gathered there in front of the courthouse, and you can see they are shouting, holding signs. we knew this would happen. there has been unrest there for several days now, as you mentioned, overnight as well. plenty of protests planned for today. things have been peaceful so far. i will be keeping my eye on things here at the live desk. back to you. a louisiana judge has set bond for a 23-year-old white man

suspected in the murders of two black men. h is not charged in connection with the killings. he's being held instead on $3,500 bond for drug charges. baton rouge police say in both shootings last week kenneth gleason fired from his car then walked up to the victims as they were lying on the ground and fired again. police believe the killings were likely racially motivated. chelsea manning responding to critics at a conference in massachusetts yesterday saying she is not an american traitor. it was one of her first public appearances since being released from a military prison in may. she says she made the best ethical decision to leak classified documents. she was convicted and spent seven years in prison. harvard university revoked manning's invitation to become a visiting fellow after cia director mike pompeo called her a traitor. 6:16. do you think you could have taken part in this. an eight-month nasa experiment that put people in complete isolation in hawaii.

they were underneath that dome for eight months at the base of hawaii's largest active volcano, simulating living on mars, eating freed dried food and being self-sufficient as if they were living on the red planet. nasa hopes to send humans to mars by the year of 2030. >> could you have done that? >> no. a cargo spacecraft completed its mission. the dragon left after delivering more than 6,000 pounds of cargo. it landed in the pacific yesterday morning. it was recovered and take tone a shipping port near los angeles. the dragon brought back science experiments from outer space including samples from human and animal research. we have some stunning and sad new images this morning. it shows hurricane irma's aftermath. >> the u.s. navy just released this showing the devastation on the u.s. virgin islands. you can see how many of the homes are damaged there. trees and other vegetation gone. as residents start to clean up, there is another threat now, hurricane maria gaining strength

and it could impact the same caribbean islands that were hit by irma. it's hard to believe this is the worry the people on those islands have now, not just cleaning up but also they could be hit again and again. >> i wonder if they even know because they don't have electricity. i'm sure they probably know because people are trying to evacuate them. that goes to show they have no electricity. a lot don't have water and now whatever they just got cleaned up or just got repaired is probably going to be destroyed again. the storm not as strong but still could be a category 4 when it hits the same island. >> at this point it doesn't take much, right? >> no. just about everything has been destroyed. anything that was temporarily put up was not put up to standards that will withstand what's going to come their way. so 24 hours ago maria right there at the bottom middle of your screen, 65-mile-per-hour tropical storms. quickly became a category 2 and now with 110-mile-per-hour

winds, notice it's more to the south. the track goes right over guadeloupe and right over puerto rico. they're going to take a hit with it. 140-mile-per-hour winds. so puerto rico is going to be kind of ground zero for the damage. and then notice it takes more of a right-hand turn than what we were talking about last week and may miss the u.s. completely. at least we got our fingers crossed. a beautiful morning from the exploratorium camera becoming breezy, sunny, and cooler as an autumn cold front will come through. it will signify with the breezes and the drier air. cooler push of cooler air again wednesday. another cold front coming down from alaska this could bring us light showers and the weekend warming. nothing will get really hot. watch the cloud cover. by noon it's still hanging around but after noon that cold front sweeps out and look at it all go away. let's talk about temperatures. my accuweather seven-day forecast. in the mid-60s along the coast into san francisco. upper 60s to low 70s around the bay and mid to upper 70s for

most of our inland neighborhoods. tomorrow the drier air and the sunshine will warm to about the same levels and then that second push of cold air comes in and look at wednesday, thursday, and friday, 60s and 70s for highs. 30s possible in our north bay valleys. the rest of us in the 40s and 50s for lows. alexis? okay. definitely the award for the worst commute goes to walnut creek and i know that is something you definitely do not want to win. we are still looking at a lot of heavy traffic on southbound 680. a little bit of good news. the first collision has cleared in the last couple moments. we, however, do still have the right lane block before you get to the state route 24 interchange. i'll flip over to our traffic maps and show you what that looks like. a hefty backup on southbound 680 that has spilled over on to 242 as well all the way up to highway 4 about a six-mile backup. so if you're looking for an alternate use willow pass road. definitely expect some delays.

fine later on today, i promise. i wanted to show you the winds gusting to 23 at sfo. the rest of us are ten miles an hour or lower. by this afternoon we'll all be around 15 to 25 miles per hour as a dry cold front will bring us our first touch of autumn. a beautiful shot as we look northbound on 101 through san rafael. it's kind of muggy and mild this morning. low to mid-60s. we'll stay in the mid-60s at the coast. 69 to 71 around the bay. 70 to 73 for our inland neighborhoods from noon to 4:00 and notice the winds will chase most of the clouds away as the air will be significantly drier this afternoon and that's why our temperatures at 7:00 this evening are going to be about the same as they are this morning. alexis? >> the area of the day has been walnut creek. two crashes, one just before north main and the second before you get to 24 interchange heading to lafayette. it looks like we have the far right lane blocked but we have the first problem near north main cleared. we're in recovery mode. slow up to 242 and highway 4 can use willow road for an

alternate. hearing about this b.a.r.t. delay an equipment problem at balboa park. a ten-minute delay. they are in recovery mode right now. alexis, thank you. the search is still on for whoever ran over two san leandro police officers and sped away last night. >> one of those officers is still in the hospital. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live where this all happened. amy? >> reporter: hi, reggie. investigators are hoping that safeway and maybe some other stores in the shopping center will have surveillance video to give them a better idea of what happened and a good look at the man who did this. they say this happened at 8:30 last night here in san leandro in the greenhouse marketplace shopping center. the officers were trying to arrest a man for shoplifting from the safeway. they got to his car and still had hold of him when he sped away hitting them with his car. a witness said it was tough to watch. >> oh, i feel so bad. i was shaken up. i was really shaken up witnessing that.

especially the officer really getting hurt. >> reporter: i got an update this morning on the officer's condition. the female officer is still in the hospital suffering from broken bones but she is expected to be okay. her partner was treated and released from the hospital. they have not made an arrest, and they don't have a description of the suspect. reporting live in san leandro, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. on to developing news out of san francisco's mission district where there was a heavy police presence overnight. officers block off part of capp street. they searched the area for hours. no word on exactly what happened. keep watching for the latest updates. i have another breaking news update on that deadly new york city bus crash. now three people are dead, 15 hurt. that is up from the one death we told you about earlier but we learn moments ago two victims died at the hospital. a commuter bus crashed with a tour bus in queens.

at least five are still with serious injuries, hospitalized right now, and new york mayor bill de blasio is now on the way to the scene. that is the very latest. i'll continue watching updates. >> looks horrible. jess, thank you. happening today house minority leader nancy pelosi will join officials to call for passage of the dream act. pelosi along with representatives barbara lee and huffman will be at college track, a student success program in san francisco urging for the immediate passing of the d.r.e.a.m. act. this follows the trump administration's decision to end the daca program. the d.r.e.a.m. act protects 800,000 young, undocumented immigrants from deportation. 6:33 now and happening today a redwood city mcdael's employee is expected to answer a plea on attempted murder charges. sarah lockner is accused of giving birth during her shift and trying to kill her newborn in the bathroom. it happened two weeks ago at the mcdonald's on chestnut and main streets. lockner told investigators she

didn't know she was pregnant. she's being held on $11 million bail. developing news this morning the student group seeking to hold free speech week at uc berkeley appears to be having trouble meeting the university's requirements. the event is scheduled to begin this sunday.% the university officials are raising concerns. they say the group failed to pay fees for the campus venues and couldn't provide adequate speaker lists and schedules. uc berkeley professor blocker says she doesn't think free speech week will go on as scheduled. if it does she assigned a letter urging colleagues and students to boycott the event. >> it was planned as a major disruption of teaching, of creation, of absolute chaos and militarization of the campus. >> free speech week organizers posted on facebook saying they're going to move their speakers outside if they have to. they plan to further address their concerns today. leaders in san francisco plan to officially announce establishing the rose pak community fund. willie brown will be object hand for the announcement at the chinese chamber of commerce.

happening today a new leader takes over the district attorney's office in contra costa county and she is making history. retired superior court judge diana becton will be sworn in this afternoon. she will be the first woman and african-american to hold that position. becton is taking the reins from doug mcmaster who is returning to his position as chief assistant district attorney. the former contra costa d.a. resigned in june amid a campaign cash scandal. new details about the cost of the coyote creek flood. "the mercury news" reports san jose faces 390 claims from flood victims, and that totals up to more than $18 million. this week city officials are expected to decide how to handle those claims. an attorney representing flood victims says the city didn't warn or evacuate residents until disaster hit. the flood in february led to 40,000 evacuations and $100 million in property damage. happening today a former military base in the santa cruz mountains is opening as a public park.

it offers a 360-degree view of the san francisco bay area. gates open at 7:00 a.m. this morning and visitors can check out the 12-acre park. officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony over the week. the park was originally scheduled to open last october but that was delayed because of construction issues. visiting the park is free. be careful if you're heading up there today because the breezes will pick up and could be around 30 to 35 miles per hour up on the peak at about 4,200 feet there during the afternoon hours. in fact, the next several days the winds will be gusty up in our hills and those will translate down into the valleys as fall is coming into the forecast. let's talk about the kids because it may be the first time they get to wear some of their new warmer clothes. not this morning, though. 61 to 64 with a little drizzle near the coast. by 3:00 this afternoon, 64 at the coast. 70 to 74 around the bay and inland. it will be dry, breezy and quite sunny. here's a look at our temperatures right now at least compared to yesterday morning. we're up to nine degrees warmer.

in the south bay from 57 in los gatos and santa clara to about 64 in san jose. you can see low to mid-60s just about everywhere except for the mid to upper 60s in the north bay. a look at sfo. delays nearly an hour and a half arriving there. wet near the coast if you're on the roads for your commute planner, mass transit. cool to mild today and it will pbridge this afternoon for your commute home on the ferries and also for the bridges. watch out for that crosswind. speaking of the commute this morning, pretty hectic. >> it has. we've had a lot of issues this morning especially in walnut creek. we finally have the all clear. i want to head back to the traffic camera. we're at the point it's going to be tough to bounce back. this is southbound 680 approaching 24 and, yes, both of our crashes, the first one at north main, the second one just before that 24 interchange are gone but as you can see we are really struggling there to bounce back. flipping over to our traffic maps a look at what the backup looks like there and really that hasn't moved. you're jammed all the way back up to 242 and highway 4 down to

a b.a.r.t. spokesperson just got back with me. she told me they pulled the platform video yesterday and reviewed it. today they're going to take a look at the train car video and review that. this all happened on saturday afternoon, a terrifying ordeal. julie says a stranger dropped that threatening note on her lap while riding b.a.r.t. near civic center station in san francisco. the note said there are two guns pointed at you now. if you want to live hand back your wallet and do not turn around. he thinks a man may have called police after she mouthed the word help to him but decided she needed to do something else and that's when she faked a seizure. her plan worked. the commotion scared the would-be robber who got off at the next stop. she did not see the person but believes it was an older woman she saw dragging a suitcase past her seat. matt keller, abc 7 news. unimaginable. a terrifying attack in europe. four students say they were attacked with acid at a train

station in france. the good news this morning they are expected to recover. the students from boston college posted on facebook saying they were outside a train station in marseilles when a woman who appeared to have a mental illness targeted them throwing hydrochloric acid at them. the solution got into two of the victims' eyes. >> they will have to see an eye doctor tomorrow. spirits are good and we're very fortunate. >> the students say they plan to complete their semester abroad before coming back to the states. james longman has the details on the 41-year-old suspect in custody coming up on "good morning america." 6:46 now. there is a new at-home test to determine your risk of developing breast cancer. the test is called color. it launches today at $149. it's now the least expensive generic test for the brca 1 and 2 genes on the market. once it's analyzed you receive your online results in three to four weeks.
