that's what's making news in america this morning. making news in america this morning, the double trouble. hurricane maria makes landfall in the caribbean island overnight. the prime minister already saying there is widespread devastation. even documents his own rescue after his roof was ripped off his home. plus, jose sweeping by the east coast bringing flooding and beach erosion tracking it all. violent protests at georgia tech after a police shooting death on campus. we have new video of a patrol car burning and new details on arrests. president trump gives a major speech at the united nations today. the harsh warnings he's expected to give to a number of countries. a marathon runner's determination that shows the true meaning of a fight to the finish.

and we do say good morning. we'll start with breaking news and the mon story storm, hurricane maria just hours from striking millions in puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands. >> hurricane maria made landfall last night in dominica with sustained winds of 160 miles per hour. >> this new video from that island where the prime minister says the storm has caused widespread devastation. in a facebook post during the storm he summed it up with three cryptic words,rough, rough. >> meanwhile, jose is moving just off the east coast of the u.s. and we are tracking both storms for you. overnight hurricane maria started its destructive path through the eastern caribbean. the powerful storm made landfall at a category 5 on dominica. there is widespread deaf staying and the mayor is writing on facebook, my roof is gone.

i am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. house is flooding. then 20 mens later, i have been rescued. in puerto rico, people are preparing for the worst. the area could get a direct hit. just a week after irma brushed the island with 70-mile-per-hour winds. abc's rob marciano is in san juan. >> the last time we had a storm remotely of this strength was back in 1989. hewlett go, that storm did over a billion dollars in damage, 12 people died. maria is going to be a lot, lot stronger. >> reporter: along the eastern seaboard it is jose people are watching closely. it is just off the coast and kicking off surf from the outer banks to massachusetts. on the jersey shore, people are already seeing fast rising waters during high tide. >> my husband and my son just walked off the dock and it's -- the water is way up. it's just amazing how fast the tide came in. >> so what can we expect from maria and jose in the next few hours? >> accuweather's paul williams takes us through the forecast.

paul. >> good morning. we now have a new elevated threat with maria. now a category 5 hurricane expected to push across puerto rico as a category 4 and then downgraded to a 4 after that then moving to become a 3 as she moves into portions of the bahamas. now, as you take a look at that track direct hit of puerto rico expecting it to the north of hispaniola and jose, jose still threatening the east coast with heavy sea, return surf, coastal flooding, strong rip currents and gusty winds. i'm meteorologist paul williams. >> thanks. we have breaking news of a small earthquake in southern california. >> the magnitude 3.6 quake struck los angeles just before midnight local time but was centered near westwood and felt across l.a.'s west side and the san fernando valley. people throughout the area reported feeling strong shaking and many tweeting what they felt. no immediate reports of major damage or injuries. also new overnight violent scenes from the campus of georgia tech university in atlanta. >> at least three people were

arrested after allegedly setting a cop car on fire. now, this was after a peaceful demonstration over the police shooting death of a 21-year-old student late saturday night. police say they opened fire when scout schultz kept advancing on officers while carrying a knife. a family attorney says schultz was suicidal and having a breakdown when he was killed. a large crowd gathered outside a jail in downtown st. louis demanding the release of demonstrate he arrested sunday but the fourth straight night of protests passed without violence. the demonstrations stem from friday's acquittal of a white former officer who shot and killed a black driver after a car chase. well, president trump will get a lot of attention as he addresses the united nations general assembly for the first time. >> the president is expected to urge world leaders to turn up the pressure on north korea and curb its rapidly advancing nuclear program. abc's arlette saenz has more on what we can expect. >> reporter: president trump front and center at the united nations. set to deliver his first major

speech to the world. the president previewed his message monday promising to make the united nations great. >> in recent years the united nations has not reached its full potential because of bureaucracy and mismanagement. >> reporter: in his first speech to the u.n. general assembly senior administration officials say the president will call out iran, north korea and venezuela by name for their threatening behavior. no issue is dominating more than north korea as the u.s. rallies support for tougher action against the regime. >> president do you have any comments about north korea? >> this will be a great week. we look forward to it. as far as north korea is concerned i think that most of you know how i feel. >> reporter: also in question, the fate of the iran nuclear deal negotiated by president obama. >> mr. president, do you plan to stay in the iranian nuclear deal? >> you'll see very soon. >> reporter: in a lighter moment as he met with the president of france, the commander in chief said he wants a grand military

parade similar to the one he saw in paris on ba steel day. >> we may do something like that on july 4th in washington down pennsylvania avenue. >> reporter: when president trump takes the podium many u.s. allies will be seated in that hall but so will those adversary he's calling out by name. in fact, north korea's top diplomat has a front row seat for the president's speech. kendis and diane, we'll have to watch what that body language is like later this morning. >> we'll be able to. abc news will cover it live. thanks, arlette. special counsel robert mueller's team has threatened to indict paul manafort, president trump's former campaign chairman as the investigation continues into the russian election meddling and possible collusion sources tell "the new york times" that the warning was issued after federal agents raided manafort's home in july. legal experts say mueller is using shock and awe tactics to intimidate witnesses into telling the truth. and the "times" reporting the president's oldest son has given up his secret service

protection. the paper reports donald trump jr. decided to drop his round the clock detail because he wanted more privacy. the change reportedly went into effect last week. but it's not clear if the decision applies to his wife and five children. now, for a look at your weather. it's beginning to look a lot like winter on mountainhood in oregon. snow in september when it's technically still summer. warm moisture headed to the northwest with more snow likely in the higher elevations. down below in portland the high temperature will only be 63, the same in salt lake city. albuquerque and kansas city will hit 87 but 8 will be the high in memphis and new orleans. new york will be ten degrees cooler. well, still ahead right here, the big change coming to

from iraq. the 21-year-old, we're told from syria. police have been given a few extra days to question the pair. they are also searching the foster home where the two had lived. 30 people were injured in friday's attack but appears the device did not fully detonate. and two of the four boston college students attacked in france this past weekend are asking for prayers for their attacker. the women were sprayed with acid at the marseilles train station in the south of france. now french officials say the 41-year-old attacker suffers from mental illness and it was not a terror attack. the two students who posted on facebook say they plan to continue their studies abroad. jeffrey the giraffe may be out of work than to online shopping. yes, it's true. toys "r" us filed for bankruptcy late last night. just as the toy industry is gearing up for the holiday shopping season. toys "r" us is the larger u.s. toy store chain with 64,000 employees. the company reportedly expects most of its stores will be open for the holidays.

and equifax reportedly suffered a security breach in march two months before the enormous breach that could affect as many as 143 million americans. the credit reporting agency says the march breach was not related to the bigger hack that's already been reported on. equifax has hired a security firm to investigatehs.ot b well, iphone users will be getting a notification today that it's time to download the new ios 11. now, reviewers who have been using a beta version of apple's new operating system say it'll have a new control center and that siri will sound more natural and will be a little smarter. >> oh, really. >> yeah. i like siri the way she's. >> siri is pretty sassy. i don't know if i can handle a smarter siri. when we come back a tour bus plows into another bus. hear what investigators believe caused the crash. and two young kids being called heroes, how they saved residents in an apartment fire.

over to the left and started like shaking, and people started to notice, and they were like, are you okay? are you okay? i was really scared. probably maybe the most scared i've ever been. >> now, police released this picture of who they think the suspect is. she has not been caught, but investigators do believe the gun threat was probably a bluff. dragland says she may have come up with that idea. she says she's not sure, but she may have seen it on an episode of "law & order." turning now to a deadly crash caught on camera in new york city. just as a city bus makes a right turn, a charter bus comes barreling through the intersection slamming into it. three people were killed including the charter bus driver who used to drive for the city before he was fired. investigators believe speed was a factor. the buses collided with such force, it completely destroyed a storefront. and dozens of people near detroit are homeless after a fire that turns out could have been much worse. two boys made sure all the

residents knew they had to evacuate. despite the smoke, 10-year-old freddie king and 11-year-old r.j. stockton knocked on every single door. >> wow. >> like you said, we were coming back from the park and then i saw the fire and i said we should go in and tell everybody to get out. >> first we saw the smoke. it didn't get in there at first, then we saw the fire, then we was all yelling and saying, get out, get out. >> two heroes. freddie and r.j. say they're glad everyone made it out safe. >> good for them, 10 and 11 years old, impressive. so it was a football victory celebration almost two years in the making. it happened after austin peay state university out of tennessee wrapped up its first win in nearly two years. >> yep, this wasn't a championship or a playoff game. just a regular game, but the victory was enough for fans to bring down both goalposts on saturday night. at least it was a big victory, 69-13 they beat morehead state. it was austin peay's first football win since mid-october of 2014. >> wow.

>> they have been waiting a while. >> yes, they have, and new york giants fans may have a similar reaction at some point they're hoping this season. especially after last night's game. >> all right, let's get the highlights now, if you can call them that, from espn. >> good morning, america. i'm scott van pelt. monday night football, the new york giants hosted the detroit lions. the big question was would odell beckham jr. make his debut and if so, would it make any difference? we got our answers. yes, he played but the story of the night, eli manning under pressure, and here the detroit lions' matthew stafford not under pressure and he finds marvin jones for a touchdown and lions lead 7-0 in the first quarter. in the fourth they lead by seven and jamal agnew, the rookie out of san diego, shakes a few, the punter's got no shot. he's gone. eli manning sacked five times, his coach said he had sloppy play. he took a penalty on a fourth and one on the goal line and the lions win, 24-10. on the diamond we're 17 homers away from a new record

let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> coming up on 4:30 on a tuesday. welcome to september 19th. >> yes, and we have a major traffic issue that's going on right now in san francisco. alexis is here to tell us about it. >> we already have a fatality this morning on eastbound 80. our south beach camera, we zoomed in, you can see all those flashing lights. this is just before you get to 4th street in san francisco, so before you get to the bay bridge. with err down to the two left lanes blocked. chp told us a couple moments ago they're thinking they will have more lanes open in 15 minutes. originally they were saying it would be 5:30 before we got this fully back open. the two right lanes are getting by. not a huge backup at this early hour but we do have amy hollyfield on the scene. let's check in with mike nicco for a look at our forecast.

>> let's talk about the breezes, did you notice them yesterday? they moved up into the hills during the overnight hours. look at los gatos 40 mile per hour gusts, 30 as you head through, say, skyline boulevard, mt. tam 31, hawkeye 37. i just checked the altamonte pass it's gusting up to 30 miles per hour. down in the lower elevations you can see that we are not dealing with much in the way of winds, with much in the way of winds, about 29 sfo, 22 when you step outside check out these temperatures, 46 napa, the rest of us in 50s until you get to 61 brentwood. >> breaking news from the nbc 7 live desk. >> all eyes right now on hurricane maria, it's a category 5 this morning which has already caused, quote, widespread devastation on some caribbean islands. that quote coming from the prime minister of dominica, says the small island is destroyed and says they will need help as soon

as the all clear is given. somewhat of a roller coaster night, though, the hurricane went down to a category 4 but regained strength. maria now headed towards puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands. i will be watching for any new information this morning as well as any new video coming in from that area, plus mike is tracking maria's path and he will have more on that coming up. >> the last thing the caribbean needed right now. happening today, firefighters from across the bay area will staff san francisco fire stations and respond to emergencies. there is a funeral going on for a fallen firefighter, bat i don't know chief terry smerdel was found unresponsive inside his office on friday. he started working for the fire department more than 25 years ago. his funeral will be on parker avenue at 10:00 this morning. president trump will deliver his first speech to the united nations general assembly in new york. in his speech the president will push for reforms to the u.n., he is also address some of the
