now from abc 7, live breaking news. >> breaking news comes from the south bay, a chp officer has dieded on the way to work. what we're learning about the crash in san martin that killed him. thanks for joining us today, kristen has the day off. the officer was on a motorcycle when it crashed this morning. this all happened on monterey highway and east san martin avenue. abc 7 news reporter matt keller live for us on what he's been able to gather so far. matt? >> reporter: reggie, the chp investigation has finished here on the scene. they're now cleaning up. see the motorcycle is on the back of the tow truck. as soon as they get this cleared up and wrap up their investigation, they'll be leaving here. i confirmed with a law enforcement source the victim san off duty chp officer. he was on his way to work at the gilroy commercial vehicle

enforcement facility off 101 in san martin when this crash happened. this was just before 6:00 this morning. chp says the chevy was driving northbound on monoray road, turned in the driver died on the scene. a 44-year-old man from san jose. the driver of the pickup truck was not injured but was very emotional about the crash. i spoke to the gas station clerk about what he saw. >> after, i saw he was sitting -- >> reporter: did he look like he was okay? >> he was crying. he was crying. >> reporter: the chp investigated for several hours, they have not released his name. we'll of course continue to cover the story online and later editions of abc 7 news. southbound lanes of monterey road will be closed for now. reporting live in san martin, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. of course, we'll have continuing

coverage of the chp officer's death on abc 7 news and ab7news.com. download the abc 7 news app for updates on this and breaking news any time. happening now, san francisco firefighters are remembering one of their own. a battalion chief died inside his office shortly after returning from a call last week. the funeral for terry smerdel is under way right now, being held at st. ignatius catholic church on the university of san francisco campus. hundreds of firefighters saluted as his flag-draped coffin was carried into the church 30 minutes ago. agencies from throughout northern california sent members to salute their fallen comrade. abc 7 news inside san francisco's energy operation center a short time ago where 911 operators and dispatchers are getting ex-from hetra help today's ffl funeral. the center is running at level 2, that means several city agencies have officials working

aongside each other coordinating things like traffic diversions and out of town fire crews that will respond to emergencies in san francisco during today's funeral. of course, it's a solemn day for san francisco firefighters and a challenging one for those who are covering their jobs. to get an up close look at what's that like, we turn to abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield at fire station 7 on 19th and fulsom. >> reporter: all you have to do is look at san francisco fire trucks to see this is a department in mourning so today you may see some different trucks rolling through the streets. these hayward fire trucks are not lost, but their drivers and passengers admit it feels a bit strange to be navigating through the streets of san francisco. >> narrower, tighter, a lot more traffic. it's good to help out. >> reporter: they're here to take over so san francisco firefighters can attend the funeral of terry smerdel.

they'll cover san francisco stations and respond to the 911 calls today. >> for resources to come into san francisco in our time of need, you don't realize it until you're in the eye of the storm how much this means to a community. >> reporter: the visitors were briefed at 6:30 this morning. they were issued department radios and other women a . equipment and went through a few drills. >> there are a little bit of variances and the variances we'll discuss during the drills so we're in line with that. >> reporter: the hayward team settled into station number 7 at fulsome and 19th where they met the local firefighters and discussed new surroundings. >> the density and high-rise buildings, we don't have 30-story buildings in hayward. a lot to mitigate if need be. >> reporter: they say they know san francisco would do the same for them. >> it's a brotherhood, regionwide, statewide, it's a big brotherhood. >> reporter: look at this truck parked in this station, too, from fremont. we also got firefighters here in

the city from as far away as salinas and napa. came from all over. no calls for service have come in yet to this station this morning. the visiting firefighters say if and when one comes in, they're r ready to go. live, abc 7 news. >> once the funeral for battalion chief terry smerdel wraps up, a procession through san francisco, down to the peninsula, to the cemetery where he's going to be buried. we'll show you a map of the route. the procession will leave st. ignatius church and head down the great highway, southbound 280, exit at east moore and wind its way to holy cross cemetery. new this morning, classes have been canceled for i dat at redwood high school after a bomb threat there. sky 7 was over the school a short time ago. see the entire student body evacuated to the football field. police say the bomb threat was called in on a tip line.

they're keeping the school closed the rest of the day to do a thorough sweep with bomb sniffing dogs. wayne freedman is at the high school, he tweeted this picture. parents have shown up to pick up their kids but so far they aren't being allowed on campus. many, of course, communicating with their kids using text. a plane forced to make an emergency landing in alameda this morning, video from sky 7 over alameda point a short time ago. see the plane with a large banner draped near it. the faa reports the plane experienced some kind of engine issue in flight. that pilot able to land safely and nobody got hurt. now to that developing news in the caribbean where hurricane maria is maintaining its strength today. this is video from earlier this morning, that's when it slammed into guadeloupe. new within the last hour, one person died on the island after being hit by a fallen tree. maria is barreling toward puerto rico, people there spending the day boarding up windows, making

preparations with a state of emergency already declared. task force one in southern california is now on standby. they are ready to head to the island. meteorologist mike nicco is tracking what maria is doing right now. mike? >> reggie, hi, everybody. i have the live doppler animated out of san juan and you can see not only are they boarding things up and trying to batten down the hatches, they're doing it with waves of thunderstorms as outer bans are hitting san juan right now and all of puerto rico. as we look at puerto rico, they're not quite in the winds yet. the red there, those are the fastest winds. it's about 70 miles across. let's find that. that's where most of the damage is going to be. it goes right over the u.s. virgin islands. right into the western -- eastern third, i should say, of puerto rico. you can see the darker the red, that's the more densely populated areas. especially san juan in the strongest part of the storm's going to go right over that, cause significant, possibly catastrophic damage. it will weaken a little bit as it heads to turks and caicos by friday morning.

we're following breaking news in the east bay. you're looking at pictures tweeted from the scene of a truck fire on interstate 580 in pleasan pleasanton, blocking the two lanes on east bound as you're approaching san ramon road. the highway patrol issued a alert, urging drivers to stay out of the area. no word yet on injuries. new this morning apple ceo tim cook sat down with abc news for his first interview since launching those new iphones. talked about new technology that could change our daily lives even if we don't have 1,000 bucks for iphone x. abc 7's jessica castro here to join us and tell us more. >> in particular he answered questions about the new facial recognition technology on the new iphones plus the rollout of augmented reality which will be available to even you and me who have the old phones. anyone who has an iphone 6s or higher. cook also addressed that really hefty price tag. take a listen.

ocean. expect it to be breezy. the winds will be faster tomorrow and thursday. beach hazard, those winds kicking up nice swells. 6 to 10 feet. the wave heights not necessarily the big concern there. it's what they do once they get to the shore. close to a strong rip current. sneaker waves and large shore breaks. let's take a look at your temperatures today. mid to upper 60s along the coast. 70 to 75 around the bay. and inland, about 76 to 80 degrees. here's a look at the golden gate bridge. very picturesque shot this morning. let's talk about your 12-hour day planner. at noon, 66 at the coast. 70 to 74 bay and inland. warmer away from the coast at 4:00, 71 to 77. look at that, by 8:00 and mid-night, temperatures dropping into the 60s and even the 50s. we'll see increasing clouds tonight as the cold front approaches. a little drizzle near the coast. a few light showers. this is green up here in the north bay. that's especially in the morning. it will taper to just some random light showers and some sprinkles tomorrow afternoon. same storms going to bring

more breaking news now, a san francisco sheriff's deputy whose gun was stolen from a trunk of a car has lost his job. sky map 7 on sky 7 shows us san bruno avenue where the gun was taken sunday. the sheriff's department said the deputy was off duty at the time and left the handgun in the trunk of a rental car. the gun was not secured in a lock box which is a requirement by the sheriff's department. coming up on abc 7 news at 4:00, as hurricane maria makes landfall, help is still on way for victims of hurricane irma and harvey. how the bay area's helping.
