you can see it will hit the turks andcaicos. and then, for now, it's going to miss the u.s. >> all right, thank you, mike. we are tracking developing news out of the east bay. a deadly apartment fire in oakland overnight. this is on fairmont avenue near pearl street. officials say the fire was contained to one apartment unit, one person died, no word on that victim's identity. we also saw at least one other person being taken away by ambulance and we'reda o wn that condition. new at 6:00, california attorney general plans to sue president trump over his proposed border wall. the wall was one of the president's biggest promises during his campaign. the goal to stop illegal immigration. part of the wall is slated to be built in san diego and imperial counties. the official announcement is expected at 10:30 this morning. the other big developing story we're following in mexico, the country's civil defense agency has lowered the death toll following yesterday's 7.1

magnitude earthquake. now it's at least 217 people. it was reported as high as 226 >> you can s the devastation, the shaking. officials say a large portion of the deaths are in mexico city. at least 44 buildings are just leveled there. 40% of mexico city and nearly 60% of morelos state is without power. they are rescuing people still . >> flights are still running this morning. some travelers are telling us they witnessed the quake while they were on a plane. >> matt keller is live at sfo. good morning, matt. >> reporter: natasha, imagine being on a plane getting ready to head here to the bay area in mexico city and all of a sudden that massive earthquake hits. that's what happened to a bunch of passengers on a united flight yesterday. they did arrive here at sfo safely. they had already boarded their plane when the7.1 quake hit. they were safer on that plane than on the streets.

>> gosh, are we taking off already? this is an awful bumpy backup. i opened up the window and all the planes on the runway were just bouncing. eric oh, my gosh. >> suddenly the airplane was like trapped with something and trying to pull with brake on or something tirhe like this. >> reporter: another woman from sacramento was supposed to be on a flight to mexico city but she missed it. instead of being there in person she is receiving terrible news from friends and family. she shared some cell phone video with us from a friend in mexico city. she says her brother sent us a picture of a collapsed building three doors down from his apartment. she decided to stay behind. others leaving today on flights heading from sfo to mexico city. the earliest flight, the earliest direct flight leaves today at 9:55. reporting live at sfo, matt keller, abc 7 news.

easier. researchers from washington state university say there are two types of fat. there's bad white fat and good beige fat that helps you burn calories and keeps you warm. so they figured out how to block c ells to n rats and caused f turn into good beige ones and that change caused the rats to be leaner than other rats. they even got to eat the same number of calories. researchers say the breakthrough could one day lead to a new treatment for obesity but they need to figure out how to implement this in people without overheating dr orogean flousridt through hurricane irma said they felt really blessed, that is until this happened. can you imagine that huge sinkhole opened up damaging and swallowing part of their house. the millers lived there for nearly 50 years. they say they noticed something was wrong on monday night. everyone, fortunately, was able to get out of the house before the back of it collapsed into the sinkhole and no one was hurt.

continuing following that 7.1 earthquake. in puerto rico hurricane maria making landfall this morning. racist graffiti at an east bay middle school. how the community isinndtap ugm. plus an inbox surprise that leftyan m customers scratching their heads. how the company is responding this morning. it is 6:30 wednesday, september 20th. >> a whole lot going on and we'll start with meteorologist mike nicco. hey, mike. good morning. we'll talk about temperatures are mild they are morning. cloud cover is on the increase and that chance of a random light shower sprinkle is still out there but you don't see anything on live doppler 7 right now other than grays. i overlaid the cloud layer. the gorgeous view this morning from sky 7. a good job, ladies and gentlemen. that is absolutely fantastic, isn't it? you could sit there and stare at that for a while. 57 to 60 with increasing clouds. a chance of a sprinkle and a shower through noon. that will taper as we head to 4:00. temperatures 63 to 69 at noon.

near harvard and not clear if only the one house was damaged. at least six people are displaced. we are tracking the developing news out of mexico where the desperate search for survivors is extensive following a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake. at least 21 people are is deadliest in mexico in decade. it includes nearly two dozen at a school. 30 children and 8 adults reported missing there. rescue workers continue to search listening for sounds from the rubble. thousands fled into the streets in panic when that quake struck yesterday. one american tourist describes the chaos. >> the whole building was shaking for five whole minutes. people just running in every direction. >> mexico's president says the priority right now is to keep rescuing people who are trapped and to give medical attention to

those injured. >> at least 60 people pulled from the rubble so far and that includes a young boy rescued by federal police after a house collapsed. crews are scrambling now to find more victims. the state's mayor collapsed in 44 places within city limits. a lot of people have family or friends in mexico and they are turning to the consulate general of mexico and san francisco to get help. people desperate to hear from loved ones have been contacting the consulate. if you are worried give them a call. >> we have the capacity to outreach people in mexico city, also. if they cannot find anyone they can reach us and we will try to help. >> we have post this had badge to our facebook page to show support for the people of mexico. we have that number you can call to help. >> two natural disasters we're following this morning, the other is in the caribbean where hurricane maria is pummeling

puerto rico as we speak. >> roofs have been ripped off the homes. nearly 900,000 people without power. new video from the island right now. a massive flooding is a big concern. people are finding shelter anywhere they can. images of people crowded into this stairwell. maria could be the strongest hurricane to reach puerto rico's shores. the hurricane is now being blamed for at least eight deaths. >> the images that continue to pour in are simply stunning. i want to show you new video from san juan, puerto rico, where winds and rain are slamming the island from hurricane maria. i also want to show you this new video and it's a fence getting knocked down. look at how powerful that wind is. i just got this video seconds ago. this is all a residential area and it's important the eastern side of the island, the most heavily populated. mike has been telling us all morning that's exactly where maria is hitting and these new

images coming in. i will let you know as soon as we get any more information about the storm. back to you. >> mike, you have been tracking this all morning long. what are you seeing now? >> a lot of flooding. 11 of the reporting stations either moderate to major flooding right now in puerto rico. not only the winds but the elevation of puerto rico. it's a mountainous island with elevations up to 4,400 feet so all that run-off is what's creating the flooding there. the eye wall right now over baja about 50 miles due west of san juan, so san juan did take a direct hit and you can see just about the entire country covered in those 111-mile-per-hour winds at least. it was 145 when it slammed. it will be 130 when it gets to the turks and caicos. and then good news right now, not a direct hit with the u.s. okay, thank you so much. we continue to think of the people in the caribbean right now. parents and students will gather in front of a castro valley middle school to unite against hate. >> this is because someone

vandalized a school vehicle with racist and anti-semitic messages. amy hollyfield is live at canyon middle school. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, natasha. they're going to be here in about an hour to hold a rally here in front of this middle school to show they are united against hate. look at these pictures at what happened here on this campus. a truck was vandalized, a school truck. someone wrote racist words and drew swastikas on the truck in black marker. the sheriff's office is investigating this as a hate crime and is looking at surveillance video to try to figure out who did this. they also plan to increase patrols around castro valley schools. the school sent a letter home to parents saying they are committed to making sure students feel safe and welcome while they are at school. reporting live at castro valley, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. it is 6:36. a chp pursuit caught on camera.

a suspected car thief led a string of patrol cars late last night. this chase started in san joaquin county and wound through several counties. police use add spike strip to stop that suspect in san francisco. no one was hurt and you can see they took him into custody. a dog, police found, in the stolen car was then taken to the spca. and there was another overnight chase, this only took place within the city of san francisco. it all started around 10:30 p.m. when police spot add saturn sedan wanted in an investigation. the driver took off. police followed until the suspect crashed into a curb near 16th and 7th streets. the suspect was arrested, two passengers detained and released. happening today we're going to learn more about the murder of a 31-year-old pe teacher from oakland skyline high school. san francisco police plan to release surveillance video related to the shooting death of carlo tateo. investigators are hoping to identify three people of interest in the case.

tateo was shot in june during an argument on folsom street. a vocal opposition is mounting to the oakland a's desired location for a new stadium within a mile of laney college, lake merritt and chinatown. opponents say the stadium planned development would destroy that neighborhood. >> you know they're going it get pushed out. they're already getting pushed out. >> not only would the stadium here disrupt our learning environment but ultimately it would uproot laney college. >> the noise, the lights, the trash, the cars, the traffic, you name it. >> the president dave kaval admits he has his work cut out for him. he helped build a stadium for the earthquake when he was with that team. he knows he'll have to work with opponents. >> it's a huge moment for observing. this is a big decision and we want to make sure everyone is a part of it for its success. >> the land they want to build on is owned by the peralta colleges and the college board will discuss the mat whter when meets again next month.

let's talk about our local weather, temperatures down in the south bay where we've had a clear sky all night and our coolest temperatures in the 50s down there like 54 in campbell, san jose and saratoga and milpitas at about 58 degrees. we have one of the cool spots in danville, 55. napa, 56. you can see a lot of 60 and 63 degree temperatures elsewhere. we have sky 7 up there showing a sneak peek of alexis' accident. sorry about that. on the roads today there's a few sprinkles later. cool to mild, mass transit and on the bay breezy. let's look at what will happen. we're under a cool influence today, tomorrow, and friday. but all that cold weather marches off to the east and warm weather, above average weather, coming next week. i'll show you the roller coaster of high temperatures and the chances of wet weather in my seven-day forecast. sorry i let the cat out of the bag. that's a new accident. we have a big problem in a

bad spot, too. right in the maze northbound 880 connector to westbound 80. sky 7 up over this crash this morning. initially it looked like two vehicles were involved as they zoomed out. we have four vehicles involved. when we first spot this had we had vehicles kind of swerving in and out of all that debris, a lot of glass on the roadway. now it looks like they have that contained to just the far right shoulder getting by and you can see just the perspective here all the folks coming up from north 880 trying to get into the bay bridge toll plaza. you can take the exit but that's about it and just slowly weaving around, maybe not even letting that shoulder by right now. a few more details from chp. it sounds like one person is injured possibly has a broken leg and maybe head injuries, too. just a ton of damage done to these vehicles. this one could be here for a while. this is really going to slow you down from oakland trying to get to the bay bridge toll plaza. another look at this and talk about alternates in a few minutes, guys. back to you. >> alexis, thank you.

a police officer was terminated after his gun was stolen. supervisors are pretty fed up with this epidemic of car break-ins. yesterday supervisors hillary ronan and norman ye introduced legislation that would require all district police stations to have a special property crimes unit. the supervisors passed a bill that would require rental agencies to hide bar codes on their cars to prevent break-ins because they are the cars of choice for thieves. >> we have to do something about it and so far all of the strategies of the police department aren't working. >> san francisco's police chief wouldn't comment but in the past has said that he wants to start a new plan to cut down on property crimes, including more officers walking the streets. felony arraignments are moving back to oakland. in june the county moved to a new courthouse in dublin right next to the jail. families fought that move. they said traveling to dublin

billed not as official but just an autograph stop. now on to your morning money report, bigger tax breaks for homeowners and renters could be on the state ballot. >> i bet that got your attention. this is all part after proposed initiative. it's proposing a $500 annual tax credit for homeowners and renters. right now homeowners only get a $70 annual credit. renters get $60. neither figure has been adjusted since the 1970s. the tax credit won't solve california's affordable housing crisis but it may keep more people from leaving the state. walmart will not be doing large scale holiday hiring at its stores this year. instead it's going to offer extra hours to its current workers. it did the same thing last year. walmart will be hiring more temps at its distribution centers. >> a glitch by amazon left a whole lot of people scratching their heads this morning. you may have received this e-mail yesterday notifying you that someone bought an item off

took a direct hit. you'll probably see damage just like that. the flood gauges in puerto rico, 15 of the 27 are flooding right now with nine of them major flooding and that's the worst category so not only winds but flooding will devastate puerto rico. back here at home we have a chance of some wet weather. clouds thickening. clouds and sunshine, random light showers. autumn breezes through friday and warm to hot highs next week. a look at where most of the rain is going to be up in washington and oregon but this cold front will lose a lot of that moisture up there bringing us just a chance of a random light shower. in fact, 7:00, quiet with the clouds increasing. the green in lake counties and as we head throughout the day the best chance will be in the north bay, maybe in our higher elevations as you bump into the clouds, a sprinkle or two. by 4:00 it's just about over. here comes the cold front with a few clouds and breezes pick up during the evening hours.

searching for survivors this morning following yesterday's 7.1 magnitude earthquake. at least 217 people are dead. >> number three, authorties investigating a fatal apartment fire in oakland. one person was killed in the unit on fairmont avenue overnight. crews were able to put out the flames. number four, a suspected car thief is in custody following this overnight pursuit that spanned several bay area counties and ended when authorities threw out spike strips in san francisco. no one was hurt. number five, we can see the clouds are now reaching the south bay. look for those clouds to get thicker. random light shower, some sprinkles possible through the early afternoon hours. temperatures well below average. 60s and 70s and getting quite breezy this evening. number six, back live to sky 7 over a pretty nasty crash within the mcarthur maze northbound 880 on the connector ramp to westbound 80. we do have injuries reported. right now just that far right shoulder and the hov bypass are getting by. use 980 to 580 to get around it.
