and he said it was an earthquake. >> reporter: they were relieved to finally get back hem. at sfo malia melendez. abc 7 news. there was a heart aches here in the bay area. abc 7 news reporter janene del vega joins us live at a church. >> reporter: in the next hour, our lady of guadalupe church here in east san jose is expecting a crowd between 3 to 500 people, they're having a prayer group for the victims of the mexico in earthquake. inside our lady of guadalupe in east san jose the priest has put up a sign in spanish that reads ay forhe victims in the earthquake. max said his uncle was trapped in the building where he works. >> i think he's still in there.

swaying palm trees held op for dear life. maria quickly disassembled so many of the plywood boards used to protect doors and window, boards scattered in a debris field spread far and wide. for several hours this morning maria brought life to a stand still, then at 9:30 a time to survey the damage. this is the eye of the storm as it passes by. we've seen damage, trees down. as you look off in the distance and see the crashing waves. what we haven't seen just yet is major flooding. on the street an utter mess of palm frans, palm trees, pieces of sheet metal wrapped around whatever got in their way. business signs toppled, street lights, dangling. when we ask folks on the street
