happened, not because they want to see it but want to write their own message. there's paper covering it up. worshippers at oakland's temple sinai already know about the racist graffiti rin on the wall of their senegal. they heard about it before they arrived for rosh hashanah services this morning. >> we got an e-mail this morning, disappointing d ining start the day and new year. >> reporter: anti-semitic message noticed at 5:00 this morning. the rabbi covered it not with paint, but paper, to write messages of hope and love. >> come here, try to be positive, especially for the kids. you know, certainly won't let it dampen our day. >> reporter: police say they're treating this as a hate crime. they're looking at surveillance video to try and figure out who did this. >> we have decity rossur cy, aour riousecrinea temples and today we're going to have an officer who's assigned here all day, during the services. >> reporter: this morning's service was so crowded some people had to move to the

overflow room. security officers are here to watch over the congregation. they'll deal with the graffiti later. >> it's obviously not going to stop us from, you know, doing our thing, and worshipping on rosh hashanah, the jewish new year. think people are pretty upset. >> reporter: police haven't said whether any of the surveillance video shows the perpetrator. they're looking all of it over at this time. they tell us at this point no arrests have been made. live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. in mexico, a frantic rescue operation. crews work to free a girl trapped under the rubble of a schol. it collapsed during tuesday's earthquake. rescuers encountered a setback early this morning when the remains of the building shifted dangerously. crews had to evacuate for several hours for their own safety. working to reinforce the wreckage before resuming their search for the girl.

11 have been rescued from the rubble. new developments in the caribbean. the death toll is climbing in the wake of hurricane maria. slammed into the island of dominica early this morning killing 15 people. 20 others remain missing. the storm is now blamed for 17 deaths total. in puerto rico, a 24-hour curfew is still in effect. even though power has been restored to most of the island. the storm is now headed toward turks and caicos. meteorologist mike nicco is tracking maria's path, what this all means for the u.s. mainland. mike? >> all great questions, kristen. let me start what's going on in puerto rico len work through the questions you asked. first, good news, look at the map behind me, the major flooding continues but the gauges are down from a high of 16 to about 12 of the 27 reporting, at least minor, moderate to major flooding. that continues. will continue another 24 to 48 hours. here's a look at the they're still the tropical-storm-force winds. 39 mile per hour winds in thell. see they're hitting hispaniola, now getting on to the edge of

the turks and caicos. the storm has actually increased up to 120 mile her hour winds. that's what it's going to be as it sideswipes the turks and caicos to the north. they're on the outside of the storm, going to get the weaker part of the storm. for us, looks like it's going to squeeze between us and bermuda and not be an issue in the mainland other than creating dangerous surf. and possibly diverting some flights away from some areas in the atlantic. fngers crossed that that path holds, kristen. >> yeah, indeed, thanks, mike. new this morning, president trump signed an executive order that allows the u.s. to target companies and organizations that finance trade with north korea. mr. trump announced the order during a luncheon with japan's prime minister and south korea's president. the white house believes sanctioning those that do business with north korea could hamper the communist nation's nuclear weapons program. south korea's president also praised mr. trump for his stand against north korea. also new this morning, san francisco major ed lee and city

supervisors unveiled a plan to help people who have been part of the daca program. they face an october 5th deadline to reenroll in the program following an order by president trump to end it. san franciso will fund renewal fees for daca applicants that works out to $495 per person. about 800,000 people are in the daca program across the u.s. about 78,000 of them in tea. he new details on free speech week at uc berkeley and the major attention on the crowds and security. the uc system is now pitching in to help with a large opt after cash to pay security costs for controversial speakers. according to the "l.a. times" uc will kick in $300,000. the event will run from sunday to wednesday. all speeches will be outside. there will be more than 20 speakers. now this is the kind of violence officials want to prevent. protests broke out in february when right wing provocateur milo was scheduled to speak. his appearance was canceled

new this morning, former white house press secretary sean spicer is revealing new details about his time at the white house. and his appearance at the emmys. jessica castro from abc 7 mornings sheer wi s is here wit news exclusive. >> this is the first sbrintervi from spicer since the surprise emmy performance. former trump secretary sean spicer talking exclusively to abc news saying he did speak to the president about that cameo during the emmys. >> this will be the largest audience to witness an emmys, period. >> he was very supportive. he thought i did a great job. and so he was -- it was very reassuring. >> reporter: spicer apologized for mistakes he made during his time at the white house, but also placed blame for his contentious relationship with the press.

>> thanks, jessica. now to our morning money report. apple's new version of the apple watch begins shipping tomorrow. and already there's a problem. the watch is supposed to be able to make phone calls, and access data with a cellular connection. but several reviewers say they can't recommend the device because of connection glitches. in a rare admission, apple says the watch can experience problems when it connects to open wi-fi networks, like you might find at starbucks. the kpaecompany says it's investigating a fix. u.p.s. is announcing plans to hire more than 5,000 new employees in the san francisco area. as it gears up for the holidays. the company is looking for package handlers, as well as delivery and tractor trailer drivers. u.p.s. says some of the jobs will lead to permanent positions. in recent% of seasonal workers have stayed on full time. if you'd like to apply, look for the link on our website, abc7news.com. we knower as chef curry.

tomorrow is the first official day of fall, but it's already looking a lot like winter in the sierra. check it out. new photos this morning show snow, new snow on the ground at heavenly mountain resort. see a dusting of powder on the mountains and snow piling up near the ski lift. >> yeah, buddy. >> you're excited, right? as you can imagine, this has people buzzing about the upcoming ski season which we hope will start earlier than usual. >> we hope. >> last year was a great year for the ski resorts after three, four, bad years. hopefully another good one. >> hoping so, we'll have the long-range models in another day

or so, we'll get an idea what's going on. look forward to that. the big snow. show you what's going on up there with our live doppler out of reno, seehe ten g rain. the pink is a mixtur. the white and gray, that is snow. they're seeing a redevelopment of some snow showers and look at this, we even had just south of virginia city, and east of carson city, some thunderstorms roll through that area. so must have been some particularly intense rain and a little bit of heavier snow to the east of tahoe this morning. here's the storm from us yesterday, that brought us those random light showers and sprinkles. see it's in the mountains east of fresno, goes to grapevine, all rain right now. there's still a lot of rain in the mountains around los angeles, every once in a while it's mixing with a little bit of snow. back here at home, it's the breezes that are going to be the big story the next couple days. 1:00 to 9:00 this afternoon, and evening, a west wind raking the bay and the delta at 15 to 25 knots.
