we have links to multiple charities accepting donations. check abc 7 news.com for the information. divers will try to locate several shipping containers that slid off a cargo ship into oakland's outer harbor. sky 7 was overhead soon after 11 empty containers went in yesterday afternoon. crews secured the ones that they could spot so they wouldn't drift away. some did sink. the coast guard were guiding ships around the area as a precaution. port officials are not sure how the containers fell into the harbor. harbor. it's 4:30. it was a little breezy yesterday. you can see it is still breezy in our hills but that will not translate like yesterday in our valleys. look at our temperatures, 51 to 56. total sunshine at noon.

we'll stay in the 60s at the coast. temperatures below average and you'll need that light jacket this evening, 59 to 64 already at 7:00. let's get an update with alexis. >> it's friday. we're expecting friday light traffic. construction is slowing you down in a couple areas. southbound 13 also a full closure overnight between moraga through the montclair stretch and we should have that wrapped up within about 30 mi detoured surface streets and that's not causing any major delays. a quick check outside, san jose at 880 and some very light volumes at 4:31 in the morning. a look at drive times up next. this morning hurricane maria regaining some of its strength as the storm moves past the dominican republic into the caribbean sea and there is help on the way to puerto rico this morning. the island's president says that

it is obliterated. fema and the u.s. military are flying in generators, water, food, and temporary shellers. american airlines plans to fly in. the damage is so extensive it could take months to get back to normal. >> reporter: maria is gaining strength and packing winds up to 125 miles per hour. it's now hitting turks and caicos in the bahamas after causing widespread damage in the dominican republic. in the resort town of punta cana locals banded together to remove palm trees. in puerto rico the damage is catastrophic, homes are flooded, the entire island is without power, and millions of trees are obliterated along the storm's path. >> now that we're south of town

with the new phones coming out. there is no screen in front of the store, so you can see the employees setting up all the iphone 8s on their display cases. another thing i noticed there is no big, long line. in fact, we only have one person in line and there is his chair sitting right there and there is noah marriott from palo alto waiting for his iphone 8. he reordered it. he's been here since last night. he's the first and last person in line. it appears the iphone 8 won't be that popular. preorders for the iphone 8 are down significantly compared to iphone 7. one review called it a fairly igrastrwht iphone 7. apple is releasing its newest version of the apple watch which is the first withstandalone cellular capability, you can get phone calls and text without it ginbe in iphone. you can guarantee this line will

be longer for the iphone x when it comes out on november 3rd. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> one dedicated apple fan. thank you, matt. lieutenant governor newsom and bernie sanders will be speaking at the convention in san francisco. newsom will discuss convention delegates. he was endorsed in 2018. senator sanders is the headliner and he will speak at 1:00 p.m. his appearance comes a week after the national medicare for all legislation. sanders will be the guest of honor at city college of san francisco's ocean campus at 3:30 p.m. sanders endorsed city college's free tuition program before the last presidential election. a last-minute settlement will stop a trial involving the deadly asiana plane crash. a surgical dentist sued claiming she could not work because of an injury suffered in the crash. asiana was challenging the severity of her injury. jury selection was supposed to

begin today but the bay area news group reports both sides reached an agreement yesterday. the deal settles the final claim by the more than 300 people onboard that flight. san francisco police arrested one of their own officers following an internal affairs probe. an officer faces two misdemeanor charges, one for having false license plate stickers and another for filing a false police report. a santa cruz doctor and two nurses accused of molesting children face new charges this morning. the 32 additional counts stem from new video investigators say shows them abusing three children. a judge increased bail to $15 million for dr. james kohut, rashel brandon and emily joy stephens. kohut worked at dominican hospital and surgery center. he's accused of luring women with intentions to molest their children. the christopher columbus statue in san jose city hall was

vandalized the day after city leaders agreed to remove it. this is the statue before someone poured red and black paint all over it. city council committee decided a group start add petition to get it removed saying columbus committed genocide on native americans. the warriors open training camp tomorrow in downtown oakland. but with a new season coming many are wondering if they will celebrate their nba championship at the white house. warriors head coach steve kerr tells our sister network espn no decision has been made. the warriors have not been invited yet by the trump administration, but it's believed an invitation will be extended if the team decides to attend as a group. last month kevin durant said he didn't want to celebrate the title with president trump because he does not respect the man in office. let's get the latest on maria as it is lashing out at the turks and caicos with hurricane force winds over just

about all of the 40 islands of that nation. let's take a look. yeah, it did definitely increase as we talked about it would. winds up to 125 miles an hour and it's slowing down a little bit. it's moving to the northwest at 7 miles an hour. the track is still very favorable for the united states. it makes more of a northerly jog and then a little bit of a northeasterly jog as it tries to head towards bermuda and then it takes another northwesterly jog. it's doing its best right now to miss the united states and miss bermuda and shoot that gap at least through wednesday. after that we'll have to keep an eye on the northeast. back here at home it's 51 in west portal, district 52. most of us about 54 to 57 in san francisco. there's some fog lurking along the coast. don't see it right now at the golden gate but that could change. light breeze fz you're on the bay, becoming sunny at our beaches with light breezes and exercising will be another mild day. in fact, a look at your micro climate temperatures and the rest of the weekend coming up. here's alexis.

part of a bankruptcy proceeding. the wsl must decide how it will proceed. the board says it does not plan to revisit the transfer. the east bay seismic safety concerns may result in changes at lafayette reservoir. experts are worried about the concrete tower that rises out of the water. it directs controlled flows. the state is now concerned that in a strong earthquake that might topple or collapse. a broken tower could cause a leak sending water down a creek through lafayette. it could cost millions for an expedited fix. a memorial to the victims of the ghost ship fire is going up in oakland. abc 7 news is at the museum as an artist worked on a sculpture that is a tribute to a dear friend. this is an ongoing work. some people who have seen it have been moved to leave their own tribute to victims. they are being added to the

coolness -- i should say that warmth all the way to the coast. remember, fog fest is this weekend, also, in pacifica. probably no fog sunday. let's talk about the sierra. some snow yesterday. more snow today. >> we don't have any current chain controls. yesterday the first chain controls of the season and we had, wouldn't you know it, a pretty big crash on 80 as well. it takes folks time to get used to driving in those conditions again. nothing happening if you are just about to head out right now. but definitely use some caution a quick check of our driving conditions around the bay area. we do have one slow spot this morning and that is for some overnight construction on southbound 880. they're still working on that 23rd avenue overpass so all lanes were blocked between 23rd and 29th. supposed to be until 5:00 this morning, that backup starting to thin out a bit. so i'm guessing they're pic thatp rig nowngki if you want to avoid that stick to 580 instead.

happening today a group of san francisco school kids will help unveil the city's first official sign. the artist who created it found her inspirtion in an existing tribute to graffiti artist. >> and i thought, well, why can't we echo the word and have up the hill? >> the center for the arts commissioned the art installation. kids from martin luther king middle school helped make the letters. >> it was really cool. i got to screw in the mini mirrors that reflect the sunshine. >> the kids will take part in the public unveiling ceremony at 11:00 this morning at the farmers market. the d.r.e.a.m. sculpture will be up for at least two years. happening today competitive practices will be held at lake merritt in oakland -- >> this is sped up, right? no? >> this is the international festival. excuse me now? >> is this sped up or real? >> no. >> wow. look at them go. >> that's why it's competitive.
