live, where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> flames shoot out of a san francisco high-rise, firefighters rescue people from a burning apartment building in park merced. thanks for joining us today, i'm reggie aqui. kristen sze is going to be in later today. one person seriously injured in the early morning fire. we took out drone view 7. it gives us a close-up look on camden drive. as you can see the fire is out but not before giving residents a big scare. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield life at that building this morning. amy? take a look behind me, reggie, you can see that the fire was contained to one unit, but it

did a lot of damage to that home. two people were hurt. and an orange cat na missing.meismao ng look at this video taken by firefighters. you can see that from the outside, firefighters could see a huge raging fire coming out of a seventh floor apartment unit around 5:30 this morning. but inside, residents of the 13-story building were battling the smoke. >> because when we got down one stairwell, it was so filled with smoke we couldn't get the rest of the way down. we just couldn't make it. it was -- we were choking, so we had to find the other stairwell which was on the other side of the building. >> reporter: getting out of this building and fighting the fire truly was a community effort. >> and then i heard people banging on the doors. there's a fire, there's a fire, get out. there were a few people who had -- were kind of hysterical. i was like, you know what, his tash hysterics later, let's go. >> people comie ining out of th building giving our units intel

of what was going on on the seventh floor na. that helped us. >> reporter: san francisco's park merced district next to san francisco state. climbing the stairs with all their equipment was a struggle for firefighters. going down all those stairs was tough on some residents. >> i'm an asthmati my med sip s walked from the ninth floor to the fifth and had to take a moment. >> reporter: she got out okay. two of her neighbors were hurt. >> listed in serious condition with smoke inhalations and burns. the other one is in moderate condition with more smoke inhalation, less burns. >> reporter: firefighters say those two victims are expected to recover, that their injuries are not life threatening. at this point, firefighters are still looking for the cause. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. developing news now in san francisco, police need your help to find the driver who hit and killed a well-known san francisco grocer.

sky 7 flew over the scene at gerald avenue and tolen street. witnesses say 57-year-old gus vardokistanis was in the crosswalk when a silver car hit him and sped away around 2:15 this morning. investigators believe the silver car has major front end and windshield damage. the victim owned gus' marnkets, many have been to his family-run stores including hate streak market and gus' in the mission. supervisors released a statement about him saying, "he kept his prices affordable and was very committed to hiring locally including those who needed a second chance. gus was loved and he will be truly missed." happening today, organizers are planning a march and rally in san francisco to demand justice in in the shooting death of an lgbt activist. dj and artist anthony torres known by many as bubbles was killed two weeks ago in the tenderloin. no arrests have been made. police say there's no evidence to suggest a hate crime took

place. today's march begins at 4:00 p.m. at larkin and myrtle street and will be followed by a rally at 5:00 p.m. on the steps of city hall. much of puerto rico remains without electricity after hurricane maria delivered lethal punch to the caribbean island. you're looking at drone footage. just look at all the damage. in just one san juan neighborhood. officials blame maria for six deaths in puerto rico, alone. at least 27 across the caribbean. residents of a nursing home face a dire situation. they need more diesel fuel to run their generator that is supplying a small amount of electricity. >> can't let them die. we can't let them die. >> generators, food, water, because in the island, no have anything. >> maria is unleashing violent winds in the bahamas and turks and caicos. abc 7 news meteorologist mike nicco has been tracking maria

for many days now. where are we seeing maria go? >> starting to move away from the turks and caicos which is good, everybody. hi, everybody. the red is where the most dangerous winds are. they are pulling away from the turk and caicos. they're not necessarily heading off to the west toward the bahamas. check out what's going on right now. still a very formidable category 3. so it's a majoruresca prineer h. and a storm surge of 9 to 12 feet. so it could still cause some massive flooding in the bahamas even though the track, at least the eye, the center of it, where the most dangerous winds are, is going to stay well to the east. so flooding in the bahamas from the storm surge and from rain an issue. it's going to split the united states and bermuda, head up to where hurricane -- what's left of jose is, and then kind of sit there for a couple of days next week then it will be whisked off into the ocean. so it's going wave producer for the u.s. but we're not going take a direct hit, reggie. >> this is going to be a long-term cleanup effort for our friends in the caribbean. thanks for the update.

president trump ratcheting up tensions between the u.s. and north korea overnight sending a tweet calling kim jong-un a, quote, madman, as the north korean dictator threatened to detonate a hydrogen bomb over the pacific. >> reporter: a fiery war of words amid escalating tensions. president trump tweeting this morning, "kim jong-un of north korea who is obviously a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people will be tested like never before!" that tweet coming on the heels of hint at frightening new weapons tests. kim jong-un saying in a statement "now that trump denied the existence of and insulted me and my country in front of the eyes of the world and made the most ferocious declaration oe a will consider a kor spocorrespondinghe lf hardline countermeasure in history." that highest level could include testing a hydrogen bomb over the pacific ocean. all in response to the president's address at the united nations on tuesday.

country, but may include a ban on travel to the u.s., or new restrictions on issuing visas for citizens of specific countries. remember, the original travel ban restricted people from six major muslim countries. it was under a 90-day review and that review expires on sunday. the new measures are expected to take effect by then. happening now, divers are working to locate ten shipping containers that slid off a cargo ship into oakland's outer harbor yesterday. sky 7 showing you an 11th container pulled from the are s. the coast guard and pilots are guiding ships around the area as a precaution. h po those containers fell into the harbor. divers expect to be in the water all day. next here on abc 7 news pat 11:00, an early warning system for earthquakes, the new technology helping one california company alert people before the shaking begins. plus, smaller lines than a lot expected outside the palo alto apple store this morning.

we're tracking developing news out of mexico where the desperate search and rescue

efforts are still under way after that powerful earthquake. more than 50 people have been found since tuesday's 7.1 magnitude quake struck. the death toll now rising to at least 280. a mexican navy official is also apologized for confusion over reports that a 12-year-old girl was trapped alive after a mexico city school collapsed. a lot of us heard that yesterday. turns out, all the children had been accounted for and there was no student still alive in that rubble. the quake in mexico served as a reminder to californians it is just a matter of time. the state is working on an early warning system, it's called shake alert. one building in southern california already has that system in place. here's abc news reporter nick watts to explain. >> reporter: quake that just killed more than 200 people in mexico could have been even more deadly if not for this. [ siren ] that siren a national early earthquake warning system. [ siren 123467] here in california a widespread alert system simply does not

exist. not yet. >> so this building is actually the only residential building in the united states to be equipped with earthquake early warning. >> reporter: a pilot project, works like this. the usgs has a shake alert system, sensors that instantly relay info to companies like early warning labs.
