your thing. energy upgrade california. live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> thanks for joining us, i'm kristen sze. right now, we're monoing president trump and the remarks he's making at the white house right now with the president of spain. we'll bring you live coverage from abc news when the weather starts taking questions. first, here local news, the massive preparation under way right now near uc berkeley after two conservative activists promise to show up on campus this afternoon despite the cancelation of free speech week. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at golden gate fields with the latest. amy? >> reporter: hi, kristen, this huge parking lot here at golden gate fields is the staging area for the chp. we're just three miles away from uc berkeley, and they're offering support to police on campus today.

look at all of these cars. this gives you an idea of the scope of their security plan. preparations are under way on campus, too. they have surrounded the plaza with water-filled barriers to protect the plaza. mutual aid is on scene. officers from as far away from uc davis are ready to go. back at golden gate fields, we want to slow you the great view from drone view 7 of all the chp officers who will be involved today. they mobilized 140 officers for today's events. these are not just officers they plucked from highway duty. this is a specially trained unit. >> the california highway patrol maintains special response te teams, trained in urban search and rescue, civil unrest and trained how to deal with this. and given the size of some of the crowds that have come in the past, we have brought enough people that if we needed to have a rapid response, we could do so and mitigate any issues. >> reporter: the founder of

patriot prayer, joey gibson, said he will be on campus today, he's out of orlando, gportland,. this is the group that planned last month's rally but canceled it because of security concerns. he'll be joined by kyle chapman, known as stick man, because he carries sticks at rallies and has been arrested for it. these are not permitted organized sponsored events but said on social media they are coming and those with opposing views have also said they will be here. so security is in place. they plan to meet in sprawl plaza at 2:00 then walk over a park and that's where they plan to give their speeches. reporting live from golden gate fields, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> all right, amy, thanks so much. developing news in southern california where gusty winds are adding to the danger of a wildfire that's burning out of control. the canyon fire spans corona, anaheim, and chino hills. it's grown to more than 2,000 acres. a mandatory evacuation order remains in effect forcing more than 1,000 people from their homes. here at home, we're tracking

a warmup. a live look from our camera over san francisco. shows a little bit of haze hanging over the city on days that so often when it's hot, and if you step outside for lunch, you'll notice temperatures are definitely ticking up. meteorologist lisa argen has more on that and today's red flag warning. >> oh, kristen, already 77 degrees in santa rosa with the relative humidity at 17%. so the red highlighted areas, of course, the high fire danger today and tomorrow. in fact, we're looking at gusty winds, 30 to 35 miles an hour up in the hills of the east bay and the north bay. so that's why we have the red flag warning. temperatures just getting warmer today. right now relative humidity is dropping in locations. the airports still at a healthy 65%. but that will change with 78 degrees right now in the city. we'll with be in the 80s today. 80 mountain view, san jose. these are 11:00 temperatures. elsewhere, looking at all 70s on this panel, 86 in novato.

warmest temperatures in novato, in the north bay with downsloping north winds. we'll tell you when we get relief, in the week ahead, in a few minutes with my accuweather seven-day forecast. >> lisa, thanks. happening today, san francisco is activating cooling centers to help people deal with the heat. several facilities will be open today through thursday to provide people with a place to stay cool. all but two city pools will be open. passes cost $6 for adults. the national weather service reminds everyone that heat-related illnesses are possible, especially for older adults and children. we have a list of all the cooling centers on our website, at abc7news.com. new this morning, a toll collector at the bay bridge was recovering after being hit by a car early this morning. it happened in a parking lot near the toll plaza. look at the backup that resulted. the chp tells us two vehicles crashed and one hit the toll collector. that person was taken to the hospital. no word on his or her condition. and scary moments for san jose police officer who was

involved in a crash overnight. it happened at the intersection of camden and union. you can see the police suv had a lot of damage to the back. another black car was involved. no word yet on the officer or the other driver's condition. new this morning, a warning about online pet fraud. the better business bureau released a study today. it shows deceptive advertising can account for at least 80% of the sponsored links that appear in internet searches for pets. there have been tens of thousands of complaints from victim who lose anywhere from $300 to $5,000 trying to buy a pet online. >> the kind of love that comes from clicking on a photo and then taking out your credit card or being asked to wire transfer money is not how you start a relationship. >> to protect yourself, the bbb and east bay humane society say if you do see a photo of a pet you like, do an internet search to see if the same knphoto is o

other sites and always ask to meet the pet in person. bay area's largest city is si seeing a jump in criminal activity. san jose, the safest large city in america for a very long time, now battling a rise in nearly every category of violent crime. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live in san jose with the numbers and perspective. matt? >> reporter: kristen, the fbi report shows interesting statistics. and you're just hoping that this is not a trend for san jose. check out the numbers. this compares 2016 to 2015. you can see the number of violent crimes in san francisco dropped by more than 500. oakland was basically flat year to year. san jose shows an increase, close to 500 more violent crimes reported in the city in 2016. san jose also saw an increase in murders, rape and aggravated assault. nationwide, the estimated number of violent crimes increased for a second straight year.

in 2016, up 4.1% compared to 2015. according to the "san francisco chronicle," don't panic. numbers in the bay area are historically low. san jose currently has 20 homicides in 2017. san jose police say they're looking into these numbers. where is the safest place here in the bay area? i checked out all the statistics in all the cities in the bay area and only one had zero violent crimes reported in all of 2016. that city is here in santa clara county. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thanks. new details involving the keith stinley murder trial in san francisco. jurors will hear two confessions made by her accused killer. the entire statement by police admitted into evidence. attorneys for jose garcia zerate also known as juan francisco lopez sanchez wanted the confession thrown out saying police misread him his miranda rights. right now we have an abc

news special report. >> now reporting. george stephanopoulos. >> good afternoon, we're coming on the air right now because president trump is in the rose garden with the prime minister of spain. the president of their government. about to take questions from the press. his opening statement just moments ago, the president emphasized the disaster response in puerto rico which is now being described as a humanitarian disaster. also, discussed north korea, the tough sanctions, the united nations he says passed last week. also, the tightening of banking relationships between china and north korea. the president praised the chinese president for that. of course, the president's been something in a war of words with the north korean dictator kim jong-un calling him rocket man, threatening to destroy their country. i want to go quickly to martha as we keep an eye on this, as the president has been speaking the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff on capitol hill today remindllm ag uf o north korea i >> he certainly was, george, he was specifically asked, general joe dunford, if north korea

possessed a reliable, accurate and nuclear-capable icbm system and this is what he said. "i think for all planning purposes, capability, development, we should assume now that north korea has the capability and has the will to use that capability." that's how urgent this problem is and it is a problem that donald trump will have to deal with, no president before him has had this problem. it has basically been punted down the road to donald trump. >> we've seen an escalation of b-1 bomber flights around north korea so far, martha, north korea responding to the president's words by taking them as a declaration of war. >> yes, the north korean leader says it's a declaration of war by having those bombers go north of the dmz. they were off the coast of north korea about 200 miles away from north korea, but well beyond the border where they usually fly. he said he will shoot them down even if they are as they were in international airspace.

experts do not believe he has that capability right now, though, george. >> not right now, but the president, of course, has also been in something of a war of words with the nfl, taking on players who decided to take a thee in protest of his comments on friday. the president could get asked about that at the press conference as well. and as we speak, up on capitol hill today, it appears the senate's effort, their last-ditch effort to repeal and replace obama chair care is on t legs. three republican senator have come out and said they're against it, senator rand paul, senator john mccain, senator susan collins of maine. senate republicans are meeting right now to decide whether or not they're actually going to push ahead for a vote on this. all this coming as the president also laying the groundwork for his major tax reform package that he also wants to be passed this year. the president met with a bipartisan group of members of the house from democrat and republican side today talking about that tax reform. a full plate for the president right now. let's go to the rose garden.

>> so we've gone through the political and economic situation of both our countries, spain and the united states are two democracies, friends and allies with many common values and interest and we've agreed to work together in the area of defense of values with a comprehensive and cooperative vision. i would like to thank the warm welcome that was extended to us by president trump and his -- >> prime minister of spain wrapping up his statements right now. >> friendship that exists between the united states and spain, thank you. >> thank you very much. steve holland, please? reuters. don't get nervous, steve. >> the nfl instead of dealing with puerto rico. why isn't that a fair assessment? >> well, i wasn't preoccupied with the nfl. i was ashamed of what was taking place because to me, that was a

very important moment. i don't think you can disrespect our country, our flag, our national anthem. to me, the nfl situation is a very important situation. i've heard that before about was i preoccupied? not at all. not at all. i have plenty of time on my hands. all i do is work, and to be honest with you, that's an important function of working. it's called respect for our country. many people have died, many, many people. many people are so horribly injured. i was at walter reed hospital recently and i saw so many great young people and they're missing legs and they're missing arm and they've been so badly injured. and they were fighting for our country, they were fighting for our flag, they were fighting for our national anthem. and for people to disrespect that by kneeling during the playing of our national anthem, i think is disgraceful. so, i will also say that, again, i read you part of his quote, but the governor of puerto rico is so thankful for the great job

that we're doing. we did a great job in texas, a great job in florida, a great job in louisiana. we hit little pieces of georgia and alabama, and frankly, we're doing -- it's the most difficult job because it's on the island. it's on an island in the middle of the ocean. it's out in the ocean. you can't just drive your truck there from other states. and the governor said we're doing a great job. in fact, he thanked me specifically for fema and all the first responders in puerto rico and we're also mentioning with that the u.s. virgin islands. it was devastated. so we are totally focused on that. at the same time, it doesn't take me long to put out a wrong and maybe we'll get it right. i think it's a very important thing for the nfl to not allow people to kneel during the playing of our national anthem, to respect our country and to respect our flag. >> if i can ask the prime

minister -- if i can ask the prime minister a question, it's going to take a war to rein in north korea. what is your advice to the president on dealing with this? >> no one wishes for there to be a war anywhere in the world, but it's true that the recent events in north korea with implications in the neighboring countries, very important countries, and means that we all have to be forceful and those of us who defend the values of democracy, freedom and human rights have to let north korea know that it isn't going anywhere that direction for the time being. section sanctions have been adopted. spain will support any political contribute to putting an end to this

situation which has nothing to do with the principles and values most of western and global democracies defend. >> translator: thank you. from "fa." we don't know whether during your conversation you discussed the cattle land situation, this is a question for president trump, do you support what the spanish government is doing regarding catlonia? i'd like to ask the president of the spanish government whether he fears it might be a unilateral deck la roiprags rat independence in catlonia and what will the government do then? >> spain is a great country. it should remain united. we're dealing with a great, great country. it should remain united. identi i've been watching that unfold. it's actually been unfolding for centuries.

i think that nobody knows if they're going to have a vote. i think the president would say they're not going to have a vote but i think the people would be very much opposed to that. i can say only speaking for myself, i'd like to see spain continue to be united. >> translator: the decision to unilaterally declare independent is not something i would -- it's not a decision i would make. it's a decision which will have to be, or not, by the government, i think it would be very wrong. and i think that right now, when everyone knows that the referendum can't take place because there isn't an electoral committee, there isn't a team at the government organizing the referendum, there aren't ballots, there aren't people at the voting stations. so it's just crazy all this will lead to is noise, but certainly

there can't be a valid democratic referendum with guarantees, with minimum guarantees. i think that would make sense in a situation such as this is to go back to common sense and put an end to this whole story. the only thing it's doing is generating division, tensions, and it's not contributing in any way to the citizen situation. so i want this to be resolved as soon as possible and i want us to go into a new stage where the rule of law, dialogue and common sense will prevail. thank you. >> thank you. major garrett? yes, cbs. yes, hi. >> -- are you truly satisfied with what the government has done so far? can you tell the people there

things are actually going great? you have a meeting, are you contemplating the deployment of special naval assets or air assets to puerto rico to address the problems there? and on north korea, very quickly, the foreign minister said you have declared effectively war on north korea and the north korean government has threatened to shoot down or aim at american planes flying in international airspace. i'd like your reaction. >> okay. i'll answer the second one first. we are totally prepared for the second option. not a preferred option, but if we take that option, it will be devastating. i can tell you that. devastating. for north korea. that's called the military option. if we have to take it, we will. he's acting very badly. he's saying things that should never, ever be said and we're replying to those things but it's a reply. it's not an original statement. it's a reply.

the things he said over the last year, and if you look back, the things he said to past administrations, north korea is a situation that should have been handled 25 years ago, 20 years ago, 15 years ago, 10 years ago and 5 years ago and could have been handled much more easily. your various administrations, many administrations, which left me a mess. but i'll fix the mess. so we'll see what happens with north korea. as far as puerto rico's concerned, i think just the opposite. we have had tremendous reviews from government officials, as we have in texas and louisiana and as we have in until physical. florida from governor scott and greg abbott. great governors. and this morning, the governor made incredible statements about how well we're doing. we understand it's a disaster. it's a disaster that just happened. the grid was in bad shape before the storm. and puerto rico didn't get hit by one hurricane. got hit by two hurricanes.

and they were among the biggest we've ever seen. with the second one being even worse. i mean, the second one hit puerto rico as a category 5. i don't belief anybody's ever seen that happen before. hit land with that kind of velocity. the governor has been extremely generous and i appreciated it. we right now have our top people from fema and they have been there. we are unloading on an hourly basis massive loads of water and food and supplies for puerto rico. and this isn't like florida where we can go right up the spine or like texas where we go right down the middle and we distribute. this is, you know, a thing called the atlantic ocean. this is tough stuff. the governor has been so incredible in his statements about the job we're doing. we're doing a great job. don't forget, their police force has been decimated because many of the police in puerto rico have lost their homes. so, sure, they want to be police, but they also want to be

able to watch their families and find their families and they have to live. so we're also very much involved in security in fpuerto rico. so everybody has said it's amazing the job that we've done in for pr. we're very proud of it. i'm going there on tuesday. now, with all of that being said, record -- record -- if you look at the amount of water dropped on that island between the two hurricanes, and the first they just barely got by with, but they were devastated. and the second was a complete wipeout. i mean, this was a place that was destroyed. so i think we've done a really good job. we're continuing to. we're literally unloading on an hourly basis water, food, supplies. we have our top people from fema and our first responders and everybody else. we're going to be deploying navy sh ships. they've already been deployed. and we are going to do far more than anybody else would ever be able to do and it's being recognized as such but it is a tough situation.

would you have a question for the president? >> mr. prime minister, if i may, sir, do you share president trump's hostility toward the venezuelan regime? and what is your opinion generally of his -- that is to say, president trump's suggestion, that u.s. military intervention might be required if the venezuelan government doesn't change course. do you support that and would you be an advocate within the eu for tougher sanctions against the venezuelan government? >> translator: we're spearheading in the european union a proposal to impose sanctions on venezuela. what is happening in venezuela is unacceptable. venezuela traditionally was a democratic country and at this time, it's no longer a democratic country. there are political prisoners in venezuela, there are people who are in jail only because they think differently than mr.

maduro. i was the first, prime minister, the wife of a man who was jailed because mr. maduro didn't like him. but there were many others who were sent to jail in swevenezue. there was a parliament and the government has made up this other parliament which has its meeting next to the other parliament. and enacts legislation. they've created a commission for the truth which is an anti-democratic tool which only serves to judge people without respecting minimum human rights standards. venezuela is on the road to dictatorship unless that can be stopped. so all of us who share values such as democracy, freedom and human rights, have to do something at this time. sanctions are important. it's important that there be an international coalition putting pressure on maduro so that political prisoners are freed and democracy is rescored because this lack of democracy and the attack against human

rights and freedoms are coming in conjunction with economic -- a terrible economic situation with a 300% inflation rate with problems supplying foods and medicines to people. so it's a really tragic situation and i think that we have -- we, the united states and spain, have a responsibility toward venezuela. there are a lot of spaniards living in venezuela and i'm worried about them and the rest, but they certainly were -- so i think that the international community should be forceful with regards to venezuela. >> translator: thank you. i have a question for each of you. for president trump, with the serious political crisis in spain because of the referendum on sunday, what solution do you think there is? you given advice to the

president on this matter? do you think there should be a dialogue between the general and the government to find a solution in n solution? now a question for prime minister rajoy. it seems the way you're managing things in catalonia is having an impact on the budget. i'd also like to know whether you think the situation with the party can be resolved or do you think you will have to call early elections? thank you very much. >> well, i think the people of catalonia have been talking about this for a long time, but i bet you if you had accurate numbers and accurate polling, you'd find that they love their d they wouldn't leave.in. so i'm just for united spain. i speak as the president of the united states, as somebody that has great respect for your president and also has great -- really great respect for your country. i really think the people of

catalonia would stay with spain. i think it would be foolish not to. y you're talking about staying with a truly great, beautiful and truly historic country. >> translator: thank you. we will be delaying the budget in parliament because we think that when we submit the budgets, we will need the support to approve them. we're talking with different political parties as you know and i don't think we'll have any problems if we continue to work down this line. i don't think we will have any problems in approving within a reasonable timeframe, but we are looking for a majority just like we did last time around when we voted the budget. at any rate, i'm not thinking at all about calling early elections as a result of what we were saying.

>> mr. president, thank you very much. thank you. >> president trump wrapping up a press conference there with the president of spain. mariano rajoy. lots of news from the president in those questions. started out talking about the nfl again saying he was ashamed of what he was seeing in the nfl, also calling on the nfl to pass a rule that would prohibit players from kneeling during the national anthem. president also saying that he's totally prepared to take the military option in response to north korean nuclear threat, if, indeed, that is necessary. we should say that while the president was speaking, final word from the senate from senate republicans who now say there will not be a vote on the latest effort to repeal and replace obamacare. they had a september 30th deadline to meet. they will not meet it. do not have enough support to pass the bill. lot of news for the president, from the president. john carl in the rose garden. >> reporter: george, i thought first to take the two big topics there, north korea and the nfl on north korea, again, firm

words, harsh words, from the president, not backing down from the type of rhetoric that we rae heard from him at the united nations. making it clear he is more than prepared to respond militarily, if necessary, to anything that the north koreans may do. as it was noted in the question, the north korean foreign minister has already said that the united states has declared war on his country with the president's words and then on the nfl, absolutely no backing down there whatsoever. he was asked if he had been too preoccupied with the nfl to deal with the crisis following hurricane maria in for puerto r said she wasn't preoccupied, he was ashamed by the actions of those nfl players that were protesting during the national anthem, so absolutely no backing down. you get the sense that is an issue that the president wants to keep talking about over and over again. >> all of this overwhelming failure of the effort to repeal and replace obamacare. the president said he would work on that from his first day in office. we're going to go off the air
