wo lonight people around the ife a rl and legacy of the man who built the playboy empire. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm kristen sze. hugh hefner died peacefully tonight at the playboy mansion. tonight, people are beginning to leave flowers and other tributes. >> abc 7 news reporter lillian kim is here with more on hefner's remarkable life. lily? >> dan and kr n,diised at the age of 91, one the faces of the sexual revolution, built an empire and leaves behind a lasting legacy. hugh hefner hosted wild parties at his mansion in his trademark robe and pajamas, surrounded by a harem of young women. >> makes for a good party. >> reporter: for hefner, the party started in 1953 in chicago, with the first issue of "playboy" magazine. it featured a nude photo of marilyn monroe and was an instant success.

warning. >> el capitan is 3,000 vertical feet of sheer rocket granite. people from around the world travel to yosemite to scale it. a deadly officer involved shooting shut down i-80 west eight hours today.idge for abou- tonight, police are asking for anyone who saw the shooting to come forward with what they know. abc 7 news rteeputis is live with the latest developments. katy? >> reporter: police say that the shooting all began with a homicide case out of fairfield. and the video we're about to show you is crucial evidence along with other videos that police are asking people to bring forward. police are interviewing more than 40 morning commuters who witnessed a deadly officer involved shooting. they were stopped in both directions around 9:00. one driver recorded this video, as officers fmro and richmond police departments shot a man suspected in a 2015

killing. since the shooting happened in emoryville, that department is the lead investigating agency. >> if you look at the video that's available on social media, it looks like he has a weapon in his hand. >> reporter: the initial homicide case is out of fairfield. richmond police tried to pull the suspect over this morning. he sped away. so chp deployed a spike strip befohe tre ac mmaze. >> it had flat tires, so it was starting to lose the tires. then the traffic stopped. eporter: officers talked with the drive rr on the phone before he got out. >> what i do know when he exited the vehicle, he did fire a shot at our officers. >> we're still trying to determine which officers were involved in the shooting, and how many. >> reporter: east 80 reopened around 11:00. but westbound remained closed until 5:00 in the evening. they'll release the name of man involved once his next of kin has been notified. abc 7 news.

another commute issue in san francisco where the fremont street from westbound 80 was shut down for hours. an ac transit bus driver lost control, hit another bus, then drove onto the sidewalk and into a building under construction. four people were taken to the hospital with . surveillance photos could be key in capturing a driver who ran down a 3-year-old child in richmond and then drove away. the child is in critical condition right now. you see the pictures here showing the red smart car involved. police say the boy was hit after he slipped away from his mom who was trying to put him into their car. sky map 7 shows us where it happened on mcdonald avenue and 27th street around 11:30 this morning. bay area residents from puerto rico arean asking for yo. one week after hurricane maria hit, people in puerto rico are in desperate need of food and water. it's really dire.

. a russian journalist is working out of an oakland loft while she seeks asylum in the u.s. because she fears for her life back home. >> she has keen insight into the controversies making headlines. dan noyes is here now with the interview. >> this journalist has been tracking how russia tried to exert influence in countries around the world and right here in america.

>> meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the temperatu us tonight. >> re fyesah, danor and kristen not going to feel warm by morning, that's for sure. we'll talk about why you're going to notice the changes. right now, most of the fog is still off the coastline, but as i show you a wider image, i want to show you why we're going to see some fog rolling in. you see the system that is approaching. that's actually going to switch our wind direction. so believe it or not, the wind is going to come off the ocean, and that's going to bring the cooler air in. it was anything but cool today. take a look at the highs for this afternoon. they range from 80s along the coast to the 90s in our inland areas. really a warm day no matter where you were. in san francisco.and, 87. really, as w85e head towards tomorrow, we're going to continue to see the wind coming off the ocean. so last couple of days in the hills, the wind has been out of the north-northeast, including today, which is why wemear w da.
