neck -- to here. and i hope he don't try to come again. >> terrifying moments for a teenage girl home alone in the north bay. tonight her dad is talking about the scare of his young daughter's life. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristin zee. the intruder sbrok bo a home in a quiet neighborhood and rohnert park. tonight the girl's dad is talking to cornell barnard. >> cornell? >> reporter: dan, kristin, manuel says his brave daughter was not hurt but still very scared about the break-in. meantime a teenage suspect is under arrest tonight. police say this is the 17-year-old intruder who broke into a rohnert park home wednesday night, believing that no one was home. >> he put the extension over here and he walk inside. >> reporter: manuel says the intruder got in through a kitchen window. manuel and his wife were not home, but their 17-year-old daughter was. >> she called and

somebody's walking by. >> reporter: their daughter said a man was outside trying to get into the house. manuel told her to go upstairs to the bathroom and lock the door. >> she was locked in here, this is the only one she can lock it. >> reporter: his daughter called 911 where a police dispatcher kept the girl on the line as the intruder got in, the man kicked down the door and threatened the teen with a large hunting knife. >> the guy put the knife on neck to her and ask, do you call the police? at the sbbeginning, she says no. the intruder forced her to hang up, but dispatchers already sent officers to the home. >> our officers were on the porch, he realized there was no place for him to go. he dropped the weapon and was taken into custody. >> reporter: the teen wasn't hurt. she said she had never seen the suspect before. manuel said his daughter is too frightened. he warns future intruders to

beware. we're poor, we have no silver, we have no gold, but i have a lot of lead. >> reporter: the teen suspect remapez in juvenile hall. you're about to hear oakland police calling for an ambulance moments after tasing a person in custody. that person died tonight. >> we need a medical for a taser deployment. >> it happened near foot hill boulevard and 41st avenue around 2:30 this afternoon. even now, nine hours later, there's still a lot of police activity there. several agencies have launched investigations. none have released details on what led to the tasing. more developing news now, one person is in the hospital after the second rock slide in yosemite. climbers say the rock fall was the size of a couple of apartment buildings, much larger

than the one yesterday that killed a man from great britain. >> we cheated death! we cheated death. holy crap, did we cheat death. >> a moment no one expected, twice in two days. a falling wall of rock made it all the way down to the road below. at least one person in a car was hurt. andrew foster, a 32-year-old from wales, who works for outdoor clothing company patagonia, died in one of a series of rock falls on wednesday. his wife lucy was hurt. the double slides left a lot of visitors with frayed nerves. >> it's elcap. not really sure what just fell, but something did, something big. holy [ bleep ]. that was loud. >> there's just cracking, a bunch of noise and then smoke started coming down like crazy. >> reporter: before and after photos show the face of el capitan now scarred. thuk dust filled the valley making half dome invisible. canadian climber peter zebrock and others watched it all from

another summit. >> absolutely unbelievable. we are on the summit. we are all safe. thanks be to god. >> a park spokesperson said slides this rare are large, but rocks do break loose in yosemity about 80 times a year. >> we spoke with some climbers who have seen the dangers up close. >> rock climbers know it's a very risky sport, but that's also part of the draw. i spoke with one local climber who has a lot of experience with el capitan and even plans to return in about a month. >> this is the shoe i climbed el cap with. >> reporter: simon moore ought to know. he's climbed el capitan seven times. this is him savoring the moment in 2015. he's very familiar with the spot that came crashing down. >> generally, when there's rock falling in an area, we avoid that area for a pretty reasonably long amount of time afterwards, until it stabilizes.

because once one section falls off, quite aufb other little pieces fall off. >> reporter: that instability is causing him to change routes when he returns to climb el capitan in about five weeks. he, like many in the tight-knight climbing community, insist the rockslides won't keep them away from tr passion. >> i'm not going to leave san francisco because there might be an earthquake. i'm not going to stop climbing because there might be a rock fall. >> reporter: this sports climber still plans to one day scale el capitan, even though a friend died doing it just two years ago. >> he put his weight on the rope and it pulled through the system and he fell. >> reporter: the east buttress climbing route is a popular one for experienced climbers. it's a scenic but still challenging trek. today's fall is estimated to have been ten times bigger than yesterday's deadly slide. lisa gal eetion, abc7 news. an auto repair shop

receptionist faces accusations of hit and run. she's suspected of hitting a little boy with a customer's car. the father of the boy says the next three hours will be critical for his son's survival. richmond police say this smart car hit him near mcdonald avenue and 27th street. the car's owner told police his car was at the shop when the crash happened. we're learning more about a homicide suspect killed by police yesterday in a stand-off that crippled the i-80 commute most of the day. state prison officials share this picture of 45-year-old de milo hodge. he had been convicted of stalking nearly 20 years ago. most recently hodge operated limo wine tours. yesterday fairfield police tried to pull him over in connection with a homicide that happened this summer. hodge then led them on a chase that ended in emeryville. police say hodge shot at them and they fired back, killing

him. all lanes headed to the bay bridge were shut down for the investigation for eight hours before re-opening. parents, students, and religious leaders rallied in the south bay tonight, trying to save a school program that serves minority students. it's about to lose its funding in two days. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has the star from san jose. >> he was broken. and he had somewhere to go. >> reporter: with dozens of supporters gathered, parents and students told stories of how imany village changed their lives. >> they help with the school, drama, family life, not just even homework. and they also make sure we're on track. >> reporter: the program was started in santa clara county in 2014, providing tutoring and emotional support for african american and latino students who might be at risk. there are more than 400 students currently enrolled. >> we have the opportunity to really make a difference and shift the way that their life is steering and let them know,

>> they say justice delayed and justice denied. the abc7 i-team asked why a criminal case against a driver accused of killing a teenager in san francisco has been repeatedly delayed for several years. >> dan noy is here now with a story you'll see only here. >> a 16-year-old boy died in a car crash caused by a woman driving more than 70 miles an hour in downtown san francisco.

she was charged in his death, but four years later, there's still no trial date set. his family wants to know why. >> reporter: friends say kevin sand was a great guy. >> he would always have a smile on his face. on a gloomy day, he would give a laugh. >> reporter: the lincoln high school student was a member of the rotc grum corps and a passionate bicyclist. on a friday morning in september, his mother was driving him and his sister to school. their minivan stopped at a light. then a terrible collision. >> like a bomb, an explosion. >> horrendous. i've never seen anything like it in my life. >> reporter: police say a silver mercedes suv hit the minivan from behind going more than 70 miles an hour. >> i watched it flip over. it flipped over like the back part flipped up and landed on the side. >> reporter: kevin sand was killed. his mother and sister were seriously injured. the driver of the mercedes was arrested. >> the offender is being charged

with three felony counts. one of gross vehicular manslaughter and two counts involving reckless driving with serious injuries. >> reporter: that was four years ago. kevin's sister told us his family can't understand why getting yesterday is taking so long. just last week, they were in court for a preliminary hearing. >> it's very unusual to see this kind of delay. >> reporter: former federal prosecutor is abc7's legal analyst. >> there's an old saying in criminal law circles. and that is delay is a friend of the defense. and it's usually and almost always to the advantage of the defense because the prosecution bears the burden of proof. >> reporter: we examined the court file, records show routine delays to give both sides time to gather evidence. we found these three motions for continuances filed by the defense attorney, delays of eight to ten weeks, all three

motions were granted by the court. he said some were caused by a heavy case load and said both sides were afforded an equal number of delays. the prosecutor agreed to one and didn't file any motions objecting to the other two. >> at this point, i can't make a comment as to that aspect because it's an ongoing case. nks it's been frustrating how long this has all taken. >> this attorney filed a lawsuit for kevin's family against zhu. >> what are the dangers in having years go by in a prosecution? >> witnesses move, memories, fade, people die. >> he says delays in the criminal case hamper the civil suit. >> we can't do discovery, we can't depose her because she has a fifth amendment right to remain silent. >> zhu settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed sum. she'll plead not guilty at the
