final preparations are being made for o.j. simpson's release from prison as early as monday. he hasn't yet filed documents necessary to move to florida which raises questions about his release. those are some of our top stories on this friday, september 29th. from abc news, this is "world news now". & a good morning to you all. we begin this half hour with criticism over the relief effort in puerto rico. those struggling in the wake of hurricane maria say food, water, fuel and even cash are increasingly hard to come by. >> a three-star general has been sent to the island to direct the response. and the house of representatives is expected to approve nearly $7 billion in new aid today. >> but critics say even the most basic relief supplies are needed right now. abc's mark remelard has more. >> reporter: days after hurricane maria barrelled across puerto rico, food and water growing increasingly scarce. in a town of san lorenzo, almost everyone lost all or part of their homes.

that community now isolated. the bridge that connected it to other nearby towns washed out. residents there doing all they can to survive until help arrives. this woman saying, quote, someone makes food one day and another makes it the next day to be able to make what we have last. on the island of vieques people there hanging by a thread, no power or running water. >> every line you stand in, by the time you get up there, there's nothing left. >> reporter: the hospital so badly damaged, a triage of tents has been set up outside because they can't treat patients inside. while images of these, thousands of commercial shipping containers filled with food, medicine and construction equipment sitting in the port of san juan, raising questions about how quickly much-needed supplies are being distributed. at the heart of the problem, few trucks and drivers, little fuel and poor communication. at least one lawmaker there calling the federal response a disaster, adding, quote, it's been really slow. the white house pushing back.

cabinet under fire for expensive travel. epa director, scott pruitt facing new questions about $58,000 worth of flights on chartered jet and government planes, not to mention his frequent taxpayer funded trips home to oklahoma. treasury secretary steve mnuchin also accused of taking costly jets on flights like that trip to kentucky where they viewed the eclipse. in all $610,000 in trips by president trump's cabinet, now under scrutiny and a white house under fire too. >> to be clear, also, the white house does not have a role on the front end of approving private charter flights at agencies. that's something that we're certainly looking into. >> reporter: cecelia vega. abc news, the white house. and the bears and packers, put on a show of solidarity before the thursday night football game.

break in the case of two murdered young girls in indiana. >> we're not going to give up until we get this guy cause. 13-year-old abbey williams and 14-year-old libby jermaine were out hiking. their bodies were found by a abandon remain railway bridge. before their death, libby managed to record audio of a man's voice. now colorado and indiana cops are working together. 31-year-old daniel nations was arrested outside colorado springs, accused of threatening several people on a hiking trail with a hatchet. investigators say nations is also a person of interest in the death of a cyclist in the same area earlier this month. police are looking at possible similarities between those incidents and the girls' deaths. indiana police cautioned that right now there is nothing that definitively connects this person to their investigation. libby jermaine's family hopes police have finally caught her killer.
