good morning, america. breaking overnight. new trouble for the trump administration. a new cabinet member under fire for his pricey travel. and the new revelations about health secretary tom price as he tries to make up for the hundreds of thousands of dollars he cost taxpayers, infuriating the president. danger at one of america's top national parks. another massive rock slide at yosemite. sending a huge cloud of dust into the air, slamming into a family's car as they were trying to escape. >> we were trying to outrun it. it was like, go, let's go. >> this just a day after a climber was killed by a rock fall. emergency workers racing to the scene, air-lifting the victims. what's causing this danger at one of the country's biggest tourist destinations? arm in arm, the packers and bears unite on the field during

the national anthem while president trump stokes the fire saying team owners are afraid of the players. and now, a top athlete getting death threats. desperation in puerto rico. frustration growing as thousands of necessary supplies arrive but can't get to those who need them most. through all this, a glimmer of hope for some of the most vulnerable. this incredible act of generosity sparked by this plea for help. >> we can't let them die. we need all the help we can get. please. >> wait until you see how this woman's prayers get answered. and good morning, america. what a powerful moment that was. so many people in puerto rico are in need of help. wait until you see what one ceo did. >> a lot of people pitching in. there's a lot of need, as well. plus some emotions on the football field last night. let's look at the packers and the bears.

there, linked arm in arm. both teams, including aaron rogers, there. lots of passion in the stands, as well. a lot of reaction. >> one of many teams displaying unity. the saints quarterback drew brees just weighed in on twitter saying, as a way to show respect to all, our saints team will kneel in solidarity prior to the national anthem and stand together during the anthem. >> we'll be watching all the games on sunday. more on that coming up. but first, the breaking news out of washington. another trump official facing questions for chartering private planes with taxpayer funds. our chief white house correspondent jon karl starts us off. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. there is news this morning of another cabinet secretary spending thousands of dollars on private air travel. while health secretary tom price now says he'll pay the government back for the cost of his use of private jets, although he's only paying a fraction of what the taxpayers paid for those flights. under fire for days, health secretary tom price is now

apologizing to taxpayers for taking more than two dozen work trips on luxury jets. >> i've heard the criticisms. >> reporter: in a statement price admitted, i was not sensitive enough to my concern for the taxpayer, and he said, taxpayers won't pay a dime for my seat on those planes. >> clearly, the demonstration of paying for my portions of the trips is a huge demonstration. it's unique. it's never been done before. unprecedented, as i'm told. >> reporter: price spent more than $400,000 in taxpayer money on those flights. he's reimbursing the government for the cost only of his own seat. that amount, $51,887.31. congress investigating the private travel of all trump cabinet secretaries and federal agencies. now abc news confirmed interior secretary ryan zinke has taken several pricey charter flights of his own, including a $12,000

private charter plane to events in his hometown. scott pruitt and steven mnuchin both under fire for racking up thousands of dollars in flights on charter and government jets. including that trip mnuchin took with his wife to kentucky where they viewed the eclipse. now one top republican senator, chuck grassley of iowa, has written a letter directly to the president, and it says, george, i'm urging you to emphasize to cabinet secretaries the necessity of using reasonable and cost-effective modes of travel. that letter from chuck grassley to the president. >> questions from senators. the president pretty angry about this. >> reporter: the president is livid about this. you know the other day, when he was asked whether or not he would fire tom price, he said we'll see. >> meantime, jon, on tax reform the white house putting out the framework for their tax reform yesterday. the opposition already mounting up on capitol hill. >> reporter: this is a heavy lift. of course, democratic opposition and republicans are divided on this.

but george, there is a lot of pressure on the other side. republicans need to show they can deliver on something they campaigned on. a lot of pressure to get this done. >> want to get it done by the end of the year. jon karl, thank you very much. >> people want details. we need details. more on the moment on the football field. so many were watching last night. green bay packers, chicago bears linking arms in a show of unity during the national anthem. abc's t.j. holmes has the story. >> reporter: we've been tuning in this season to see the games. but we're also tuning in to see what happens before the game. who is going to sit? who is going to kneel for the national anthem? last night it wasn't about that. it was about linking arms. this was the first time the crowd was asked to participate in demonstrations. this came on a day when we got what many found to be a peculiar statement on the issue from the white house. ♪ o' say can you see >> reporter: before the long-time rivals faced off on "thursday night football," both the hometown green bay packers and visiting chicago bears

stood and locked arms with their teammates in a show of unity during the national anthem. some fans chose to join in locking arms as well. others waving flags of their own. >> that demonstration of love and unity. >> reporter: in the wake of president trump calling for players kneeling during the national anthem to be fired, green bay star quarterback aaron rodgers said in addition to the cheers, he heard negativity yelled from the crowd during the anthem. >> what's disrespectful to the anthem? yelling things during it or standing at attention with arms locked facing the flag? >> reporter: on thursday, the president reiterated his stand on fox calling out nfl team owners. >> i think they're afraid of their players, you want to know the truth. and i think it's disgraceful. >> reporter: abc news mary bruce pressed the white house on trump's statement. >> the president said he believes nfl team owners are afraid of their players. what did he mean by that? >> probably the backlash of the players and the stance that they're making. and not wanting to create the conflict within their team. >> reporter: when asked to

clarify the president's stance, the press secretary said this. >> i don't think there's much to clarify. i think it was pretty black and white there. >> reporter: while sanders says the issue is black and white, a recent poll says public opinion is divided along racial lines. 63% of whites said kneeling is inappropriate. 31% of nonwhites agreed. now, the president said the owners are afraid of the players. it's worth noting that at least the green bay packers are a publicly owned team. they're owned by the actual fans. something else to note, delanie walker of the tennessee titans is getting death threats after he made a statement about supporting his team for the demonstration they made. this thing started as a silent protest, starting as something to even unify as you see there, is spiraling into something that needs to calm down before we can get anything done. >> when unity is seen as a bad thing -- aaron rogers said it. many people complaining during

the anthem, and they're booing. what's more disrespectful? booing during the anthem or silently protesting? >> reporter: it seems so simwesl nday. >> let's hope we have a lot less of it on sunday. t.j., thank you. we'll move to puerto rico. the frustration churning there. thousands of shipping containers full of supplies sit on the island's docks. abc's alex perez is in san juan with a closer look at why the supplies are not being distributed. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, george. take a look at all of these containers. there are thousands of them filled with goods and supplies. but getting those items to the people who need it the most, that's the big problem right now. this is what it looks like this morning on the island of vieques, just seven miles away from the coast of puerto rico, severely isolated with no running water or electricity. the hospital closed now operating out of a triage tent outside. like many areas of the mainland, residents are begging for relief

and basic supplies. gas, food, water. 10,000 containers of relief on the island already, just sitting in san juan bay, not getting to any of the residents. >> the total supply chain of distribution has been interrupted. >> reporter: there are very few truck drivers to move them. >> we need to restore the electricity power. we need to restore our roads. we need to restore communication. we need to move the diesel around the island. >> reporter: fema telling abc news anything they have delivered is immediately distributed. there is not a single trailer from fema or from response operations that are being held. president trump waived the shipping restrictions on thursday and is sending a three-star general to coordinate relief efforts, but criticism still mounting. many saying not enough is being done to help puerto rico. >> unfortunately this administration's response has been inexcusably slow and ineffective. >> reporter: a royal caribbean

ship which carried relief supplies to the island picked up thousands of evacuees and will continue to pick up evacuees in st. thomas and st. croix. and officials here at this terminal tell me they have been able to slowly increase the number of deliveries each day but it will take several days to get back to 100%. george. >> thanks, alex. >> we could use an encouraging story out of puerto rico. and we have one. a nursing home desperate for help after hurricane maria is finally getting some relief. we first learned of the story when a caregiver flagged down our crew and took rob inside. and a ceo saw her emotional plea for help here on "gma" and stepped up in a huge, huge way. rob, give us the latest. >> we're so grateful. as we saw in alex's report, it's so difficult down there. for various of reasons. distribution of supplies so painfully slow. for a lot of people watching our reports in the united states, that is simply unacceptable. we first met maria in the care

center residence right after hurricane maria tore through this island. they were living in sweltering conditions. some clinging to life. the anguish and fear in maria's voice was undeniable. >> we can't let them die. we need all the help we can get. >> reporter: maria never stopped fighting for her 11 elderly patients here. struggling to keep the care center up and running with no supplies. >> we need light. we need water. >> reporter: maria's story striking a chord in the heart of one florida ceo. >> it's our mission to help the community. >> reporter: so watch groups took action. loading up the company's private jet stocked with supplies like medicine, food, water. on the island some roads nearly impassible, but they managed to get to the nursing home. >> miss maria, how are you? >> fine. thank you. >> i saw your piece on the news. we have a whole airplane load just for you. >> oh, thank you very much. oh, my god, i don't know how can

i say, thank you, god. god never left us alone. >> reporter: taking us back inside. conditions now only slightly better. maria said now she wants to pay it forward. >> when everything comes to control again, please visit us. we're going to give more thanks, more and more thanks to all of you. thank you. >> you guys are very sweet. >> thank you. >> wow. >> she's so grateful. i wish i was there to witness it. she's so tough. for the past week she's been washing dirty sheets and hospital gowns in the nearby creek next to her. i talked to the ceo after he did kind gift and he described maria in two wonderful words. he said she's an angel and she's a warrior. that is a rare combination. >> they'll throw a great party when everything is rebuilt. >> give us more of a sense what it's like there on the ground. >> it's desperate in many areas especially the far-flung areas. in the mountains there. supplies are getting there, but it's so slow. and it's painful to see them

stuck in some of those ports. fema is doing the best they can. it's such a disaster. some of the things i've never seen in all my years of covering storms. >> that's saying something. because you have covered a lot of storms in your time. >> it's a bad, bad hit for puerto rico. but puerto rico strong. we'll support you all the way. >> we'll continue that support. all right, rob, thanks so much. now to terrifying rock slides in yosemite two separate incidents in just the last two days, killing one tourist and injuring others including a man driving with his family, trying to leave the park. the incidents raising major safety concerns. abc's nick watt is on the scene in yosemite with more. good morning, nick. >> reporter: good morning, robin. two massive rock falls in two days right in the middle of peak climbing season here at el capitan. it's one of the most iconic rock faces in the world. this has got a lot of people asking, what is going on? rachel evans and her family were driving home from a three-day trip to yosemite when

suddenly a rock burst through their sun roof. >> it shattered and the dust just poured in. we were trying to outrun it. it was like go, let's go. at the same time my husband reached up and was like, my head my head, because it was bleeding profusely. >> reporter: her husband injured. at least 30 climbers on the wall suddenly tens of thousands of tons of rock falling. a vast dust cloud filling the valley. >> we cheated death. holy crap did we cheat death. >> reporter: the rock slide coming just one day after a tourist was killed, his wife badly injured after a slab the height of a 12-story building weighing 1,300 tons fell on top of them. another couple, honeymooners, heard the granite fall. >> oh, my god. it's been a pretty crazy experience. really scary, really scary experience. >> reporter: what's happening still unclear. might be the huge temperature swings this time of year eroding the rock. it's not uncommon.

but two in two days that injure people? no one can remember that. the park visited by 5 million a people a year is still open. the message from park officials is do not panic. i've stood at the foot of el capitan with my family as countless other people have. it's just luck. the people who died in the wrong place at the very wrong time. robin. >> nick, thank you. new warning about the flu. hard to believe flu season is almost here. officials say this year could be especially dangerous because of a certain strain they're seeing pop up. our senior medical contributor dr. jen ashton is here. what's the concern? >> it's really about preparing for the worst and then we hope for the best. cdc tracking flu activity in the southern hemisphere. as part of a predictor to see what we might expect later on in our flu season. they're seeing again, h3n2. that is the bad actor. it's a very virulent strain.

we saw it here last year. it makes people very sick. they're concerned that's going to be hitting us soon. flu by the numbers. last year, only just 2 out of every 5 americans were vaccinated. this year they made about 166 million doses of the flu vaccine, of course encouraging everyone over the age of six months to be vaccinated. there is no flu mist this year. everyone is pretty much going to have to get the shot. there is a jet injector that is needle free for people who want to avoid that. very important to get that vaccination. >> nasal spray not an option. >> nasal spray is not an option for anyone this year. the flu vaccines are out. they are widely available and, again, i can't emphasize this enough, this is not a bad cold. take it seriously. >> i'm going to get mine today. >> i got mine this week. emotional moment on capitol hill as the return of steve scalise. his first day back after a mass

his release could come as early as monday but the tape work to get him to florida hasn't yet been filed, which means simpson could be spending a lot of time in las vegas, the city where he got arrested. >> reporter: o.j. simpson's movements after he got released. tom scotto his best friend said once he's out he won't be shying away from the public eye. >> we're not going to hide. he's going to do the same things he always did. >> reporter: simpson was granted parole in july after a fiery hearing which the hall of fame running back said he's one of the best prisoners ever in nevada. >> i don't think any inmate has ever represented it better than i. i've done my time. >> reporter: by all accounts, simpson has an unblemished prison record. but as parole gets closer, time gets harder. he's currently sequestered in protective custody. >> he's going a little crazy because he's in solitary, so he's a people person, likes to talk. >> reporter: simpson said he plans to live in florida near

two of his children, but his attorneys tell abc news the paperwork to get him there hasn't been filed yet in the meantime, scotto doubts simpson will get in trouble again. >> all he wants to do is spend time with his family, friends and his kids and play golf. >> reporter: for now the man scotto says lost everything in jail, says he's got a lot to adjust to like new technology. >> ten years ago there was no iphones. he never used modern technology before. >> reporter: he says simpson is looking forward to spending time with his family. >> he hasn't seen his sister, his kids. >> reporter: now, both simpson's friends and nevada officials are most concerned with what they're calling a princess diana situation, that's a high speed chase leaving the prison in which someone could get hurt. officials tell us they're going to limit the eyeballs there as much as possible and get this done as quietly as possible. george. >> okay, matt, thanks very much. we're joined now by o.j. simpson

attorney malcolm lavergne. thank you for joining us. we've seen the earliest possible release date is sunday, october 1. is that when you expect mr. simpson to be released? >> october 1 is the earliest eligible release date. october 1 falls on a sunday and except for essential workers i think it's going to be highly unlikely that the nevada department of corrections is going to have any type of resources to be able to transport mr. simpson anywhere. >> when do you think it's going to happen? >> i really don't know, but what i have confidence in is that the nevada department of corrections has taken care of mr. simpson very well for the last nine years and mr. simpson's making arrangements. he has to go through the nevada department of corrections, the nevada department of parole and probation. at some point very soon he will eventually have his release plans and he will be able to get out. >> are we talking days, weeks? >> i'm anticipating a few days after that eligible release date. that's what i'm anticipating at

this point. >> and what are those arrangements exactly? where does mr. simpson want to go, what does he want to do? >> he wants to go to florida, see his family, hug his family on the outside of prison, not inside prison. he wants to eat seafood, enjoy steak, enjoy the simple pleasures that he hasn't enjoyed in nine years. i spoke to him, he's going to get the latest iphone so he's going to have a nicer iphone than even i have. he wants to enjoy those simple pleasures and he wants to do that in florida. >> it's been reported he's been held in isolation since his parole hearing. when is the last time you spoke with him and what has that been like for him? >> i spoke to him jyesterday. when this happened on july 20th, he was bored out of his mind for the first month or so. mr. simpson is very much a people person, enjoyed all the privileges of the general population the entire time he was there, had multiple jobs, enjoyed conversing among the

other inmates, but that quick change did do him in for a month or so in terms of the boredom level. as time has gone on -- last entit night he sounded very excited. >> we heard matt gutman talk about the possibility of a high speed chase. what are you doing about that? >> i'm confident the department of corrections is going to take care of all those things. >> o.j. says he wants to hug his family and enjoy his life once he gets out. the goldman family says they're going to try to collect on that $60 million judgment. your response? >> they've said it's $42 million, $50 million, $60 million. it just doesn't matter. this is why you don't sue judgment-proof people in private party civil lawsuits but they're free to collect on it. i've been clear, the goldmans can collect on their lawsuit, do whatever they want, make as many appearances, promote their

>> back on "gma" with the mother facing possible jail time for refusing to vaccinate her child. the issue coming to a head as she battles her ex in court. abc's linsey davis is here with that story. good morning, linsey. >> good morning, robin. rebecca bredow says she's not against vaccines. she just thinks it's everyone's personal choice and she said based on the research she's done, it's not best for her family. and if that means going to jail, so be it. >> reporter: this morning a detroit mom has a big decision to make. after a judge ordered her to get her 9 1/2-year-old son vaccinated by 9:00 a.m. wednesday morning or go to jail. >> i don't know how long she's willing to put me in. it could be a week, it could be 30 days. >> reporter: rebecca said, when her child was little, her and her husband agreed to space out vaccines. >> it wasn't until they started grouping vaccines that i chose

to no longer vaccinate. >> reporter: she claims her ex was fine with that until last year when he changed his mind, warnting to follow a regular vaccination schedule instead. bredow refuses. that decision has her at the center of a legal battle with her son's father. the court sided with him ordering bredow to p continue vaccinations. while the state of michigan allows parents to opt out for nonmedical reasons the american academy of pediatrics said vaccines have been part of the fabric of our society for decades and are the most significant medical innovation of our time. vaccines are safe, vaccines are effective, vaccines save lives. >> i would rather go to jail for standing up for what i believe in than vaccinating my child. >> an attorney for the boy's father told abc news it is our position this case is not truly about vaccinations. it's a case about ms. bredow

refusing to comport with the court's orders and activity frustrating the father's custody rights. robin, we'll see what happens next week. >> thank you. we'll bring in dan abrams and jen is back with us. the mother says michigan has a waiver for parents. >> it does. the state allows parents to sign a document, to take classes and therefore to waive the necessity to get their children vaccinated. the problem here is you don't have the parents taking that position. you have a parent taking that position. you have a parent taking the other position. so a judge has weighed in and sided with the father and said, look, i have to make a decision here. i'm siding with the father. as a result, this child is going to be vaccinated. this really isn't as much a case about personal choice and a case about do you abide by a court order. >> the state is trying to make this harder to get the waiver. >> that's right.

in 2015 michigan made it harder. used to be you could sign a document and you could say for whatever reason we don't want vaccinated. starting in 2015 they started making people take classes to learn what the impact of that is and that's reduced the number of people not doing it. >> jen, what about the mother's concerns. we've heard about this from other parents. >> as high as 40% of people in this country think that spacing out vaccines or avoiding them all together, but particularly spacing them out is safer. there's no evidence of that. a study published showed that those children who have their vaccines delayed or spaced out have a higher risk of febrile seizure, a seizure associated with fever. none of the proposed benefits are seen. there's no reduction in autism risk or no reduction in cognitive performance down the road. we have seen increases in measles, mumps, pertussis as

"stand up for something" felt sort of like the film. it could have taken place in the '60s or '70s. it's relevant today. unfortunately we have to encounter these issues but we got to take them head on. i feel like we're not afraid. as human beings we have to look out for each other and stand up for whatever it may be, whether it's animal rights, the environment, women's rights, stand up against injustices. i love that this film is addressing some of those issues through a human being's life, but this song is also a broader scope of just addressing it on a universal level. >> it's beautiful. rise up, all these powerful anthems. it speaks to us and helps us all. >> yeah.
