live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> searching for a killer in san jose, police investigate a deadly home invasion, while neighbors say they've been worried about an escalation in violence. thank for joining us today. i'm reggie aqui. kristen sze is going to g in later today. neighbors tell us this is the most serious in a string of violent incidents. this shooting happened last night in north happen hsan jose. matt keller is there for us. >> reporter: once daylight hit, people who live here were getting into their cars and headed to work at the tech companies around here. horrific night filled with fear and a lot of questions. it's not something you expect to hear at around 8:40 at night at

the elon at river oaks complex in north san jose. >> just a gunshot, all i heard. >> reporter: this woman lives next door to where the shooting took place. she did not want her face on camera. police say two men forced their way into this apartment and shot a man. >> it was super scary, it was very, very scary. >> reporter: the victim was taken to the hospital where he died. police did not make any arrests or have a suspect description. >> it's very shocking to us. it was very, very shocking. kind of all off guard for us. >> reporter: several neighbors came up to us to complain about what they say is a lack of security at this apartment complex that houses mainly workers for nearby tech companies like cisco. >> i don't like to see people get hurt. i know the community here, the c people here, i've been here four years, they're very strong, hardworking people, going to work every day like myself. >> reporter: residents say there have been too many crimes lately, from car break-ins to a

jogger being robbed at gunpoint. now this murder, something that clearly rattled the residents. >> seen not this much, honestly, not this much. kind of scared now. >> reporter: i just received an e-mail from the apartment complex management. it says "elon management is aware of the situation. we're doing everything we can to assist the police with their investigation. our first priority is always the safety and security of our reside residents." this is the 21st homicide here in san jose this year. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. a north bay school has extra security now, the second time this month after another threat was made against redwood high school. jessica castro joins us with more on the school's actions t ensure safety. >> hi, reggie. today's threat has been deemed not credible. so far things have been going smoothly all thanks to those extra officers. the district says it did consider canceling class, but when they determined the threat wasn't credible, they didn't

want to encourage caco granted, should anything happen today, still, police are on campus right now, and they're ready to take action. classes went on as scheduled, but things are far from normal at redwood high school. four extra police officers were on hand today, dealing with the new threat. this one appeared on the bathroom wall, someone wrote there would be a school shooting today. police don't think it was a credible threat, nevertheless, they were extra cautious. >> we believe that this is not a credible threat, but nonetheless, we do take it seriously, and so that's why they've agreed to be a presence here on campus today. you can imagine we're, wroyou k, you could be right a thousand times, wrong once, you beat yourself up for that. >> reporter: a second time this month the school faced a threat. sky 7 was over the scene last week when students at redwood high were evacuated to the football field all because of a bomb threat. >> if we do, when we do find out who commits these types of acts,

we do not tolerate this in the district and will use the fullest measures within our policy address that. >> reporter: meanwhile the school's principal sent a letter to parents telling them about the extra security, and also encouraging students to come to campus today. >> i would say that overall, the response has been very positive. thankful that we've allowed school to continue today. >> reporter: and of course, the school day is about halfway done, if police advise school administrators to shut down schools still today, parents will get a text, an e-mail, they will notify it on facebook and also tweet it. jessica castro, abc 7 news. >> jessica, thank you. a public funeral is going to be held for the chp officer work. 44-year-old james branik died last week in a san martin. funeral services held at 2:30 this afternoon and the morgan hill cultural centers. trying to determine what sparked this house fire, started

after 10:30 last night on crompton road. flames were coming out of every window when firefighters got there. neighbors told crews everybody was out of the house. took an hour and ten minutes to get the flames under control. nobody there got hurt. new developments out of florida, a 12th nursing home patient has died. the facility lost air-conditioning during hurricane irma, you probably remember this story. this morning the broward county medical examiner's office i.d.'d the victim. police are treating all deaths from the rehab center in hollywood hills, florida, as part of its criminal investigation. they want to know why the patients died after the storm, even though a fully functioning hospital sits just across the street from that nursing home. and new developments in puerto rico, fema says its top priorities include restoring essential services. like electricity. this comes ten days after hurricane maria violently struck that u.s. territory. acting homeland security secretary elaine duke is visiting puerto rico today. duke faces criticism for calling

drew, it's called fall. >> yeah, reggie, already running 5 to 10 degrees cooler right now than this time yesterday. certainly feeling more like autumn today than it has for much of this past week. outside we go, the tam cam showing you we are seeing sunshine in the north bay. but right around the bay bridge, we're stuck with some low clouds. the marine layer right now in full effect. bringing us these cooler changes. future weather showing you by 3:00 tonight, our warmest spot are still struggling to even reach 80 degrees. and then later on tonight, we'll see some low clouds back into the 60s we go. have that light jacket later on tonight for your friday evening plans. highs today closer to the coast more in the way of cloud cover, 60s and 70s become widespread. take a look at the all important weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. reggie? >> okay, drew, see you then. it's an honor more than six decades in the making. hundreds of korean war veterans coming to san francisco for a day of appreciation. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live for us at the palace hotel. amy? >> reporter: hi, good morning,

reggie. this event is just about to get under way. 400 korean war veterans and their family members all here to be celebrated at a luncheon here at the palace hotel. pretty special to have them all in one place. we watched as they checked in this morning. these are members of the u.s. and korean military. many of them wore their uniforms. their relatives are all dressed up. there seems to be a lot of pride and appreciation for this event. the consul overageneral told us celebrate the national day of korea every year on october 3rd, they decided this was a good yooyoo year to dedicate it to veterans and host a big bash because they realize this population is shrink shrinking. >> the younger is 85 years old, they're very aged and passed on very rapidly. we thought it would be a very timely period now to host this kind of event. >> it's great because there's so many of us getting up in age

in today's morning money report, we begin with california's affordable housing crisis. this morning governor brown is in san francisco to sign more than a dozen housing bills. those bills are divided into

three key pieces of legislation. one of these would put a $4 billion affordable housing bond before voters next year. a second imposes a new $75 fee on real estate transaction documents. the third aims to streamline regulations that can slow down affordable housing construction. lawmakers say the package is the most significant housing policy in years. volkswagon dealing with another big bill as it struggles to put that emissions test cheating scandal behind it. this morning, the german automaker announced it was setting aside an additional $2.9 billion to buy back and retrofit diesel cars. this is on top of the nearly $23 billion in legal settlements. vw has been under a cloud since 2015 when caught cheating on emission tests for diesel-powered cars. a little hard to believe, flu season is almost here. and health officials say this year could be especially dangerous. because of a certain strain they're seeing pop up.

temperature change. look at santa rosa, 12 degrees cooler right now than this time yesterday. similar story in san jose right now, 9 degrees cooler in hayward, 67 degr7 degrees coole concord. certainly feeling more like it should be this time of year. 63 the current number in oakland. all this cloud cover now has slowed that warming process. where we have more in the way of sunshine like brentwood, up to 74 currently right now. highs today close to the coast, that cloud cover going to be pretty stubborn. by the afternoon, away from the coast, should get sunshine peeking out. 85 the high in fairfield. afternoon peeks of sunshine in san francisco, only 67. 81 san jose. 72 oakland. 80 the high in santa rosa. overnight tonight, we'll have clouds early on along the coast. they're going to clear out likely after midnight. so plenty of stars after that midnight hour. mid 40s to mid 50s overnight tonight. that is really nice sleeping weather this time of the year. opening up those windows for the natural ac. futurer tracker temperatures,
